The Places and Artifacts from The Conjuring Franchise

The Conjuring movies have become one of the best horror franchises in horror movie history. Ed and Lorraine Warren were featured in most of these films, as they investigated quite a few haunted locations and took artifacts from a few of the sites where these horrifying events occurred. Let’s take a deeper look at the places and artifacts from The Conjuring.

The Perron Family Estate

The Conjuring was based on the Perron Family’s paranormal experiences in their Burrillville, Rhode Island home. It was first known as the Old Arnold Estates, and generations of families have lived here. The house is now used as a haunted bed and breakfast and thrill seekers can spend the night here.

The Annabelle doll was one of the artifacts taken from the first Conjuring movie. This doll is locked up in the Warrens’ haunted and cursed museum. The Annabelle doll has been featured in multiple movies in the franchise. The doll doesn’t look anything like the creepy one in the movies; it is an old Raggedy Ann doll. The doll was inhabited by the spirit of a child named Annabelle Higgins. When the Warrens investigated the doll, they claimed it was inhabited by a demonic spirit. The doll has been exorcised, but it was unsuccessful. The Annabelle doll is still locked in a glass case and will never be opened again.

The Perron Family Music Box is another artifact that was taken from the Perron house in the first Conjuring movie. In the movie, the youngest Perron child, April, discovers an old music box in their house. She used it to communicate with a spirit named Rory. He was killed by his mother, Bathsheba. When Lorraine looks at the music box, she sees the face of the child in it. At the end of The Conjuring, Ed and Lorraine take the music box to keep in their room of artifacts. There are rumors that it will still open up and play music on its own.

Ed and Lorraine Warren also took a toy monkey from Perron’s home. They claimed that it was possessed as well. There is only a small glimpse at it in The Conjuring. It is seen when Ed talks to a reporter about what is in the room. He tells him, “Everything you see here is either haunted, cursed, or used in some kind of ritualistic practice. Nothing is a toy. Not even the toy monkey. Don’t touch it!”

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 was a movie about a haunting in London, England. The Enfield poltergeist happened in the home of Peggy Hodgson and her children. The family claimed that evil spirits haunted the house. The children say they saw furniture moving and heard knocking on the walls. The family wouldn’t go upstairs, lived in the living room together for 18 months, and were terrified of going anywhere else in the house. Over those 18 months, over 30 people witnessed the haunting in this home.

There is still a lot of speculation that this family made up all of the paranormal events that happened here. There were photos and videos of the events, but some think Peggy made it all up to become famous. The children are all grown up now and have tried to keep their lives as private as possible.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It takes place in 1981 in Brookfield, Connecticut. The Warrens went to help out an eight-year-old boy named David Glatzel. His family was present when a demon possessed him. In fact, his sister’s boyfriend, Arne, wanted David to be safe again and told the demon to take his body instead. While the demon took over Arne’s body, Ed Warren had a heart attack as he watched it happen.

Arne made a lot of horrible decisions while he was under the demon’s possession. It turns out that he stabbed his landlord 22 times. His defense for the entirety of his court hearing was that he was possessed by a demon. The Warrens were at his trial to testify and had quite a bit of proof to show the court, but Arne was convicted of manslaughter. The Annabelle doll that the Warrens have in their collection was featured in this movie as well.

Annabelle

Annabelle took place in Santa Monica, California, when John Form bought his wife, Mia, a porcelain doll meant for their first child, Leah. They added it to the collection of dolls in the nursery and just knew that she would love it. The family began to experience some very bizarre events in the home when they added the doll. They were attacked by two members of a cult, and one of them killed herself while she was holding the doll in their home.

Mia and Leah were attacked by a demon a few times, and they ended up calling a priest to exorcise the demon. Father Perez comes to them, and he tells them that demons are known for attaching themselves to objects like dolls. Father Perez takes the doll from Mia and John and gives it to the Warrens.

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation features the Annabelle doll locked up in the Warren’s collection. This film is all about how the doll was created by a dollmaker named Samuel Mullins. He and his wife suffered a horrible loss when their daughter, Annabelle, was hit by a car. He and his wife wanted to feel the love of a child again, so they took in six children from the local orphanage.

The demon in the doll began to stir up paranormal activity for Samuel and the children. The demon also posed as one of the nuns, Sister Charlotte. The events that took place at the hands of the Annabelle doll were horrendous. This is why the Warrens kept the doll in a glass case; that is where she remains today.

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home occurs right after Ed and Lorraine Warren take her home and lock her in a glass case. The Warrens hired a babysitter, Mary Ellen, to watch their daughter, Judy. They wanted a night out together, and Mary Ellen seemed the perfect fit. However, one of Mary Ellen’s friends shows up at their home and decides to sneak into the collection room, and she opens up Annabelle’s case. This is when multiple spirits get released.

One of the many artifacts from this movie is the Samurai armor, which is one of the main attractions in the museum. Judy and Mary Ellen’s friend stare in awe at this armor. They could even hear the battle cries of the Samurai coming from it. Not only that, they could hear the screams of his victims as well.

The Shadow Doll

There are hundreds of different cursed and haunted items in the Warren’s Museum. Their daughter, Judy, is now in charge of it. One item that hasn’t been featured in the films is the shadow doll. This is a very creepy handmade doll. The story is that it will visit people in their dreams and can even stop their hearts while they are sleeping.

The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor Is Back in 2024

Known year after year as one of America’s top Halloween haunted houses, The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor is returning to scare the haunted Los Angeles area in 2024.

The Dark Harbor’s first scream was heard way back in 2010, but then COVID-19 and ship renovations caused a several-year delay. Well, the waiting is over because Dark Harbor is returning to the literally haunted ship, The RMS Queen Mary, and it will be bigger and better than ever!

The Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor 2024 Dates, Trailer and More

The haunted Queen Mary will transform itself into one of America’s Top Haunted attractions. Beginning September 20, 2024, and running through November 2nd, The Dark Harbor will feature live entertainment, bars and lounges, haunted mazes, spooky food offerings, and a haunted stroll through the Queen Mary herself. It wouldn’t be a visit to the Queen without appearances from The Captain, Ringmaster, and Scary Mary herself.

Tickets will be available sometime this summer, so check back because you won’t want to miss the best Halloween show in Long Beach.

Haunted Places in Italy Not To Miss

Poveglia Island- Venice

Poveglia Island is known as one of the most haunted places in the world. For years, it has been off-limits to visitors; however, there is a way that you can see it. If you are taking a boat ride in Venice, you will be able to catch glimpses of the haunted island. This island is incredibly terrifying, but there is also some controversy that comes along with it.

What makes this island so haunted? It is known as an island of death. There were over 160,000 plague victims who lost their lives here. More than half of the soil on the island contains human remains. On some parts of the island, you can see human skeletons out in the open. This island was filled with death, pain, and punishment. Not only that, but there was an asylum on the island as well. The amount of ghosts and spirits on this island is not for the faint of heart.

Castello Di Montebello

One of the creepiest stories to come out of Italy is about this haunted castle. The mystery of a little girl who was murdered still haunts this castle. It happened on June 21, 1375. A child, who was five years old named Guendalina was outside the castle playing. Her father was the Lord Ugolinuccio da Montebello. The child generally had two guards by her no matter what. The child also needed to be protected because she was albino and couldn’t be out in the sun. She was known in the village as Azzurrina, the little blue one, because of her bright blue eyes.

When her father came out to see where his child was, he and the guards could not find her. It turns out that she was running after a cloth ball and ended up downstairs. She went to the dungeon, and this is where she supposedly was murdered. There is still no real answer as to what happened to the child, but when people come to visit the castle they think that they see her ghost. Visitors can hear her cries; some have seen her piercing blue eyes. The rumor is that she cries on the summer solstice every five years.

Evil Tower: Castello Di Poppi

For those who love a haunted experience, the Evil Tower is one that you just can’t miss. There is a spirit that many visitors have seen here named Matelda. She was a beautiful Italian woman who was arrested for the murder of her lover. She was given the death sentence, and her ghost just couldn’t stay away from the tower.

Matilda haunts the castle and plenty of visitors have seen and heard her walking the castle. She was a maid there, so she spent most of her time trying to find laundry or cleaning the rooms of the castle. Visitors have felt her presence all over the castle and some have mentioned that her ghost does seem heartbroken.

Catacombs of Rome

For ghost hunters who enjoy going to underground haunts, the Catacombs of Rome are just the place for you. These are ancient burial grounds, meaning many spirits just lingering about. Rome had some strict laws about burials inside of the city, and these underground passages were a place for those who wanted to bury their loved ones.

There have been at least 40 different catacombs discovered in Rome, but not all of them have public access. These catacombs are narrow tunnels of darkness where ghost hunters and paranormal seekers can tap into a whole world of the terrifying. The catacombs house thousands of mummified bodies and skeletons sure to creep you out.

The House of Souls: Genoa

For those in search of some haunted thrills, The House of Souls in Genoa is the place to be. Many haven’t dared to spend one whole night here, but if you do, you are in for it. The house is uninhabited, but there have been plenty of ghost sightings and sounds of moaning coming from inside. These sinister sounds will keep anyone away, but if you are seeking some creepiness, this is the place to go.

Some legends have stemmed from this house. It was an inn in the past and one legend states that the owners were murdered here. When the house was an inn, they used lowered ceilings, and in one of the rooms, the killer lowered the ceiling and it ended up crushing the owners in their sleep. The killer then used the help of a gang to get rid of the bodies. These could be the real reason that visitors hear the terrifying sounds of them at night.

Abandoned Hospital: Colorno

Ghost hunters from all over the world have been known to seek out abandoned hospitals. The hospital in Colorno is located in the province of Parma. In 1873, it was used as a shelter when cholera broke out. Not only did the sick seek shelter here, but soon, it led to a place for vagrants, sex workers, and abandoned children. The conditions here were anything but hygienic, and there was a lot of death here.

After the hospital got a facelift, it became a psychiatric hospital. While it was a hospital, the methods that were used here varied from straightjackets and electroshock therapy. The windows all had bars on them, and those who lived here were not treated well. With all of the souls who passed away here, those who come to visit the abandoned hospital have heard moans and screams and even seen people walking around crying. This is where plenty of souls were lost.

A Haunting On Dice Road: The Iva General Store

The current home of the Midcalf family has a fascinating history. Originally constructed in 1845, it served as both the local general store and the post office for the area. A new supermarket and an official post office were established elsewhere in the tiny town. The old store transformed over the years, gradually evolving into a livable home, while still retaining its original exterior appearance as a general store.

In 2006, the Midcalf family acquired the property and embarked on renovations. The patriarch, Mike Midcalf, noticed a peculiar phenomenon: a steady stream of people would drive by, park, and reminisce about the home’s antiquated past. Being the friendly type, Mike often extended invitations for tours, but every visitor declined to set foot inside the house.

The kitchen area within this historic home harbors some of the most chilling experiences. Mike’s wife encountered a terrifying incident while washing dishes one afternoon. A pair of ice-cold hands seized her wrists, refusing to release their grip without a struggle! Meanwhile, their son Josh faced his own eerie encounter. Late one evening, he ventured into the kitchen for a midnight snack, only to find himself inexplicably trapped. An overwhelming negative presence seemed to confine him within those walls. Summoning his courage, Josh attempted to pass through, but the room suddenly filled with billowing black smoke. Frozen in terror, he cleared the back kitchen counter, climbed upon it, and spent the entire night in a fetal position, unable to cross the threshold until sunrise dispersed the ominous haze.

However, amidst all the disturbing incidents, there is one family member who captures the entity’s attention more than anyone else: ten-year-old granddaughter Aidabelle. Her connection to the haunting remains a mystery, leaving the Midcalf family to grapple with the inexplicable forces that linger within their home.

The Michigan Hell House: The Pomeraning Haunting

A mere three miles from the Midcalf home, the Pomeraning brothers—Terry and Dwayne—resided in their own haunted abode. Their home, once a fading general store, had been converted into a livable house around the late 1890s. However, growing up within those walls, the Pomeraning brothers would later recall that their childhood was marred by unsettling events.

In 1974, during a fateful June evening, the Pomeraning family settled into bed. Terry and Duane were abruptly awakened by furious rapping on the east side of the house. The knocking echoed both inside and outside, devoid of any discernible pattern—just a relentless, violent rhythm. Alarmed, their father suspected a possible break-in and promptly called the police.

Retired police sergeant Charles Frisby and his partner arrived as the first responders. To their bewilderment, they found no signs of forced entry or trespassing. Yet, the inexplicable rapping persisted, beating relentlessly in their presence—an unseen force orchestrating the eerie cadence.

The following night, Terry and Duane again heard the same haunting knocks. Their father summoned the police once more, but the outcome remained unchanged: no visible source for the unsettling sounds. This unsettling cycle of nocturnal disturbances and emergency calls persisted for six months. The local police department’s records in Merrill documented nightly dispatches, yet officers discovered no prowlers or plausible origins for the ghostly rapping.

The strain on the Pomeraning family’s emotions was immense. Young Duane, overwhelmed by fear, cried himself to sleep each night. Desperate for answers, state police, state fire marshals, and even a geological seismologist descended upon the Pomeraning property, seeking to unravel the enigma that plagued their home. The echoes of that relentless knocking still reverberate through the annals of Merrill’s haunted history.

As the haunting intensified, the Pomeraning family found themselves ensnared in a web of inexplicable events. One seemingly ordinary afternoon, as Terry, Duane, and their father sat watching television, an acrid scent filled the air—the unmistakable odor of smoke. Rushing to the bathroom, they discovered a singular roll of toilet paper ablaze. The fire department was summoned, yet their investigation yielded no tangible source for the fire. Firefighter David Lednicky, among the first responders, confirmed that no other part of the bathroom bore any damage—only the incinerated toilet paper roll remained. The absence of accelerants defied logic, leaving them with a borderline inexplicable conclusion: spontaneous combustion by an unknown force.

But the haunting did not relent. On Halloween night, October 31, 1975, terror struck anew. A back bedroom within the house erupted into flames, threatening not only the home but also the life of young Duane. As firefighters battled the inferno, Duane’s skin turned an eerie shade of blue, and his breath ceased. Amidst the chaos, the fire chief attempted to breach the attic, seeking any clue to the fire’s origin. Yet, with each effort, a mysterious force pushed back against the attic door, thwarting his entry.

Duane, scarred by these otherworldly encounters, remains steadfast in his belief: Satan himself is the malevolent force haunting their home. But as shadows dance upon the walls and echoes of the past linger, the question remains: Is Duane’s assertion correct, or does an even darker secret lie hidden within those haunted walls?

The Haunted History of Merrill, Michigan

Delving into the annals of Merrill’s past, we uncover a chilling tale from the late 1800s—a time when the village was ravaged by the dreaded scourge of smallpox. This now-eradicated virus, once highly contagious and deadly, manifested as a rash, erupting into lesion-like blisters that inexorably led to death. Desperate for relief, afflicted families resorted to an ungodly remedy: setting fire to their own homes and personal belongings, hoping to cleanse and scorch their surroundings.

The eerie echoes of this dark history resonate in the present. The Midcalf kitchen, veiled in unexplained black smoke, and the former Pomeraning home, consumed by inexplicable fires, stand as enigmatic markers. Could these two hauntings be intertwined?

Enter a psychic medium, who ventured into the Midcalf home, attuned to the unseen currents. Within young Aidabelle’s bedroom, the medium sensed choking sensations and glimpses of fire. But the heart of the matter lay deeper: an angry male entity harbored resentment toward the entire Midcalf family, especially Aidabelle. Why? Because their family remained whole, while his own kin perished. This revelation offers a breakthrough—the haunting, perhaps, rooted in a tragic past.

Imagine a family existing during the general store era, struck down by smallpox. Casualties were inevitable, except for one lone survivor who harbored eternal hatred for anyone destined to inhabit that cursed space. And what of the Pomeraning residence? The heavy fires there seem to point directly to a grim truth: hapless victims of smallpox were incinerated and buried somewhere along this unholy stretch of road.

Today, after a ritualistic cleansing performed by the medium, the Midcalfs claim a greater sense of relief. While uncertainty lingers, the home now breathes with newfound tranquility, as if the malevolent energy has been quelled. Perhaps the restless spirits have found solace, or perhaps they bide their time, waiting for the next chapter in Merrill’s haunted history. The Pomeraning brothers no longer live in the home that terrorized them so long ago and a new family lives within the home currently.

Every day, we encounter numbers in various ways. They weave through our lives, playing essential roles in countless contexts. Whether spoken aloud or written down, numbers typically don’t evoke fear in us. However, history reveals that certain numbers can indeed instill trepidation and, at times, an unsettling amount of fear.

666 – The Number of the Beast

The infamous number 666 has deep-rooted associations, primarily originating from the Holy Bible. In the Book of Revelation, it cryptically states: “Let the one with understanding reckon the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666.” This enigmatic figure, often referred to as The Beast, is linked to the Antichrist in various interpretations.

When the Book of Revelation gained prominence, those who adhered to Christian beliefs were genuinely terrified of any association with this unholy number. But the story doesn’t end there. In later years, the number 666 experienced a resurgence, thanks in part to the chilling horror film The Omen. In the movie, a young boy believed to be the Antichrist bears a small tattoo of this ominous number on his body.

Even unintentional encounters with 666 seem to bring misfortune. Take the case of James Foxall from East Sussex, UK. His town-issued license plate for his sports car happened to feature the dreaded digits. What followed were a series of car wrecks and even a mysterious fire. Other vehicles with similar plates also met eerily similar fates.

Today, in fundamental Christian circles, the number 666 remains largely avoided. Some individuals go to great lengths to steer clear of it, fearing its dark connotations.

Unlucky #13

The number 13, often considered unlucky and a harbinger of misfortune has a fascinating history rooted in the Bible. Let’s delve into its intriguing tale:

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ had a group of devoted followers known as the Twelve Apostles. These disciples listened to His teachings and helped spread His message to the masses. During the momentous event known as The Last Supper, Christ sat around a table with these Twelve Apostles. He imparted to them formal instructions on how to continue His work should He meet an untimely end.

Among the thirteen individuals gathered at that table, including Christ Himself, only one betrayed Him: Judas Iscariot. The weight of guilt from his treachery led Judas to take his own life in a desolate field soon after.

Leonardo da Vinci, the renowned artist, immortalized this pivotal scene in his masterpiece, The Last Supper, based on biblical accounts. Here are five frighteningly famous horror film graveyards and where you can find them.

Real Movie Cemeteries

Night of the Living Dead

This is perhaps the horror film that started it all for the majority of fans. George Romero’s 1968 black and white classic opens with a pair of grieving siblings in Johnny and Barbara venturing out to visit their father’s grave. Minutes into the film, a deranged man kills Johnny and stalks Barbara all over the cemetery looking to make her his next victim. For those looking to retrace the steps of what some consider to be cinema’s first onscreen zombie chase, then the Evans City Cemetery in Evans City, Pennsylvania is the place to go. Romero chose the location because it was a cemetery that was built on a hilltop and that gave the filming crew a great deal of privacy when shooting the opening scenes. Fun Fact: While not a cemetery, the Monroeville Mall featured in Night of the Living Dead’s sequel, Dawn of the Dead, is a half-hour drive south of Evans City in Monroeville. Pet Sematary

No horror film graveyard list would be complete without one of the most famous known to both humans and animals alike, Pet Semetary. This grisly 1989 Stephen King cult film gave a whole new meaning in, “sometimes dead is better.” For this film, there are two separate graveyard locations that can be seen with the first being the famous Mi’kmaq burial ground. Just off Snow Cove Road in Sedgwick, Maine is the spot of the burial ground and while Hollywood magic helped to make this location eerie and over the top, today it looks rather plain but still the desolate feeling resonates nonetheless. The climb featured in the film was done in parts of Acadia National Park alongside Deer Brook Trail. For the graveyard where Gage Creed is initially buried, that’s the Mt. Hope Cemetery located in Bangor, Maine. Fans of the film will recall that this is where Stephen King cameos and played the clergyman officiating the funeral. Random Stephen King Trivia Fact: According to the novel, this is also the same cemetery where Georgie Denbrough is buried as well.

Phantasm

This is a horror film where not only graveyards, mortuaries, and caskets are crucial to the plot, they’re also in every scene! A young twenty-five-year-old filmmaker in 1979 named Don Coscarelli introduced audiences on what was to span nearly five decades in his cult film franchise, Phantasm. Set around a pair of teens who suspect that the local undertaker is running an otherworldly funeral home, they set off into a real-life dreamworld battle with evil incarnate in the form of a sinister entity named the Tall Man. Morningside Cemetery is the home-base for the Tall Man and for Phans (horror fan lingo for fans devoted to the film series) the place to visit is actually called the Dunsmuir Mansion Estate located in Oakland, California. The massive and sprawling estate and its stone gates were used as grounds for the Morningside Mortuary and Cemetery and today the estate is rented out private parties, and gatherings, thus making the inside mostly restricted to the general public. Phun Phact: A portion of the headstones used and the giant casket the Tall Man carries with ease were actually all made of styrofoam.

The Omen

Here is one for all you European horror fans and world travelers. In 1976, director Richard Donner burst into the horror movie world with a film that had its core character taken directly from the Bible itself. The Omen was the story of a young boy named Damien who is adopted by a wealthy U.S. ambassador and his wife who find out that the father for the youngster wasn’t some transient, but Satan himself. A key scene midway through the film finds the ambassador in a graveyard searching for answers only to discover it’s guarded by bloodthirsty hellhounds. To capture this isolated and unnerving cemetery, Donner took to filming just outside of Rome, Italy a mile north of the town of Cerveteri. Known locally as the Tomba Dei Letti Funebri (which translates into Tomb of the Funeral Beds), this stone bed necropolis gets completely terrifying after sunset. Omen Fact: The film’s composer Jerry Goldsmith won the Academy Award for Best Original Score which he titled “Ave Satani”.

Friday the 13th Part 6

Any fan of the Friday the 13th franchise knows that Jason Voorhees is almost never truly killed and hardly buried. Fresh off being buried somewhere between the end of Friday the 13th Part 5 and Part 6, the film opens with franchise hero Tommy Jarvis suffering from nightmares about Jason coming back to life. To remedy this he and a pal go to a local graveyard to dig up Jason and make sure his body is further destroyed. Unfortunately, a bolt of lightning has other plans and Jason is brought back to life to continue his bloody killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake. For this scene, the Old Madison Cemetery in Madison, Georgia is the actual site of this series franchise favorite. Positioned right by the railroad tracks, the cemetery still stands today and is quite active in regards to visitors coming and trying to find the iconic Voorhees plot. Friday Fact: This is the only film in the entire Friday the 13th series that features no nudity whatsoever.
