Tucked into the hills of Hollywood, the seemingly ordinary Alta Cienega Motel resides. Built in 1948, the building itself is quite unimpressive, seeming like any other old motel. It doesn’t even have a pool. However, the motel has a history involving the famous Jim Morrison, lead singer of the psychedelic rock band, The Doors.
Room 32 – Jim Morrison’s Favorite Room

Between 1968 and 1970, Jim Morrison lived in room 32 after being evicted from his former residence for hanging from a balcony by his hands. At the time, Morrison struggled with alcoholism, which eventually led to his death in 1971. Since then, his favorite room at the Alta Cienega has been visited by fans all over the world.
The room is very unique compared to the rest of the hotel, which is pretty simple. The walls and ceiling of room 32 are covered in graffiti from fans, along with some pictures of Morrison. Even the bathroom, furniture, and T.V. are inscribed with drawings, The Doors’ lyrics, and messages from loving fans who wish to memorialize the room. It’s quite an impressive sight, especially compared to the rest of the motel, which is quite bland. It’s worth checking out, although we advise not bringing young children to visit, unless you want to have to explain the numerous male genitalia drawings throughout the room. It’s your funeral.
Unfortunately, it appears that the motel has been closed since 2021. We hope the motel will open back up in the future, but who knows?
The Ghost of Jim Morrison
Rumor has it that since his death, Morrison’s ghost still lingers in room 32. Since the motel shut down, we wonder if Morrison’s spirit will go somewhere else or stay in his favorite room. Only time will tell.

The Story of the Haunted Magnolia Hotel
What once began as a small, two-bedroom log cabin is now one of the most famous haunted hotels in all of Texas. The hotel was built in 1840 by James Campbell, who was an original Texas Ranger and co-founder of Seguin, Texas. Underneath the cabin, the large basement was used as a Native American jail cell, and is known as one of the worst jails in all of Texas’ history. Unfortunately, later Campbell was murdered by Comanche Natives, and the cabin was sold to Joseph F. Johnson, who expanded the hotel and added a stagecoach station.
For years, the hotel remained abandoned. It wasn’t until the new owners, Jim and Erin Ghedi, saw the Magnolia’s potential and restored it to its current state. Now, you can visit the hotel at any time and take a ghost tour, or stay the night.
The Haunted Magnolia Hotel Murders
This hotel has quite the history. In 1874, an unsuccessful bank robber committed what is known as the most horrific murders in the New Braunfels area. The man attempted to rob a local pharmacy but didn’t find any valuables. He then proceeded to the back of the building, where the pharmacist and his family lived. The robber came across some gold jewelry and then continued to poke around the place. A family friend named Helene was woken by the noise and went out to investigate, where she was met by the robber with a hatchet in hand. He slashed both of her eyes so she couldn’t identify him, and he proceeded to strike a 12-year-old girl in the head, killing her. After his crimes, the man returned to the hotel and was never convicted of any wrongdoing.
It wasn’t until years later that the man confessed on his deathbed to his crimes, but by then it was too late. Now, it’s rumored that the murderer still makes his presence known at the hotel. Reports say his room becomes unbearably hot and uncomfortable, and that he does not like to be antagonized.

VIP Night Ghost Tour: This spooky two-hour tour is led by the hotel owners, Erin and Jim Ghedi. They will take you to every room throughout the hotel, where you will encounter spirits and learn about the history of this famous hotel. It is noted that this tour takes place at night and is not for the faint of heart.
History and Mystery Day Tours: This tour is a little less daunting. You must arrive at 1:00 pm sharp on your tour date, and the guide, Shauna, will take you throughout the premises. You will see the entire building, and may run into some ghosts. There is also a gift shop after the tour.

It’s been reported that 13 ghosts have been identified at the Magnolia. These spirits are deemed mostly pleasant, which may be disappointing to some thrill seekers. To name a few of these ghosts, there are:
A Squatter – during the period that the hotel remained vacant, a squatter passed away, allegedly from suffocation.
Itsy – a young girl who sadly passed from yellow fever.
James Campbell – the founder of the hotel.
Sara – a lady who died of a broken heart after her lover did not return.

Sallie doesn’t always sell seashells by the seashore. In this case, she haunts a quaint little home, terrorizing any visitors. What once was a cute little residence is now a home of nightmares. Unfortunately for those interested in residing in this home, the house was taken off the market in 2017 and is now a haunted tourist attraction.
Hauntings at the Sallie House
Built in the 1800s, this house was once a home to the Finney family. The owner, Dr. Charles Finney, used the downstairs as his medical office, where he performed surgeries and exams. According to legend, the Sallie House is rumored to be haunted by a girl who died during an emergency appendix removal surgery. The story goes that Dr. Finney began making his first incision on Sallie before the anesthesia fully kicked in, causing her immense agony. Sallie passed away during the surgery, and she has been haunting the halls of the house ever since. Sallie was deemed the “Man-Hating Ghost,” as many male visitors have reported deep, inexplicable scratches, hearing inhuman sounds, and generally feeling extra unwelcome by this apparition. This is likely because the last person Sallie ever saw was a man who inflicted severe pain.

Horror House is a large-scale haunted attraction located in Lake Hamilton, in the heart of Central Florida, between Tampa and Orlando. They’re here! We just wanted to get that out of the way. We have all, hopefully, seen the classic horror film, Poltergeist, and thought, “Nice house.” The suburban home featured in the film housed the Freeeling family as they experienced a paranormal nightmare.
While the film’s plot involved a cursed house built on top of a cemetery, the real-life house has been poltergeist-free, at least that is what the current owners say.
Poltergeist Legacy: A Haunted Slice of Cinema
Released in 1982, Poltergeist is an American horror classic directed by Tobe Hooper and written by Michael Grais, Mark Victor, and some guy named Steven Spielberg. I wonder if he is still working? The film is about the Freeling family just trying to live their life and build a pool, but these malevolent spirits have other ideas when they abduct their youngest daughter, Carol Anne.
The home in Simi Valley was used as the real-world location for filming the Freeling residence. While only the exterior and some interiors were used in the film, the house is iconically recognizable because of scenes filmed in these parts of the home:
Kitchen: Pretty much all of the scenes in the kitchen, like the iconic scenes of stairs stacking themselves and Carol Anne sliding with a football helmet on across the floor.

The movie was a huge blockbuster, earning over $121 million at the box office and leading to two sequels and an unfortunate remake in 2015. It was even nominated for 3 Oscars and is constantly listed as one of the greatest horror movies of all time. Is there a better haunted house in a movie? Someone could argue that Poltergeist is the ultimate haunted house film, and they wouldn’t be wrong.
Where Is The Real Poltergeist House Located?
The house from the Poltergeist films is a real house located at 4267 Roxbury Street, Simi Valley, CA. Here is the spookiest part: the new owner has transformed the Poltergeist home into a vacation rental on Airbnb. That’s right, you can actually stay in Carol Anne’s home, but I hear there may be a problem with the TV.

Located in the foggy woods of Sedro-Woolley, Washington, Northern State Hospital was once the largest mental institution in the state, besides the Old Western State Hospital. The hospital opened in 1909 and was designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers, the same architects who brought us New York’s Central Park. It was built to be a self-contained colony, with 700 acres of farmland, a dairy plant, a lumber mill, and even a bakery.
As years went on, controversy over asylums in general began to swell throughout the country. People heard about the brutal history of the hospital and began fighting for better rights for the mentally ill. In 1976, the Washington State Legislature cut off all funding, and the Northern State Hospital closed permanently.
Can you visit the hospital today? According to the Northern State Hospital website, “Northern State Hospital is part of the SWIFT Center, owned and operated by the Port of Skagit County. The former NSH farm is owned by Skagit County Parks. Visitors are welcome at the farm and along Hub Drive during daylight hours. Follow signs and stay on the historic route. Access to the inside of buildings is prohibited.”

Is the Northern State Hospital Haunted?
Despite its beautiful setting, Northern State Hospital had a dark and sinister side. Known as being one of the more humane hospitals of its time, patients may have still been subjected to lobotomies, heavy sedation, and electroshock therapy. Many of the patients shouldn’t have ever been admitted to the hospital, some were struggling with common conditions like depression, post-menopausal syndrome, and alcoholism.
Dairy Barn Building at Northern State Hospital
Many of these patients died while in the hospital’s care, but too many were never claimed by their families, leaving the hospital to cremate the patients’ remains. Hundreds of patients’ ashes were found stored in tin cans, each with their numbers. These remains were eventually buried at Mount Vernon Cemetery. Almost 1500 patients were buried in the 1.5-acre cemetery on the hospital grounds.
Visitors have reported experiencing some pretty strange paranormal phenomena. Feelings of being followed, cold spots, and voices are all common occurrences. Some people have even seen strange shadows creeping around the cemetery.
The most common spirits are a young girl with a red ball and an older man chasing after her. Some have seen them running through the hospital, and others have spotted them in the cemetery.
The 2018 South Korean horror film, Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum was directed by Jung Bum-shik. This movie was based on the real psychiatric hospital of the same name. The movie follows a horror website crew that wanted to investigate the asylum after it was abandoned. They had heard tales of the hauntings here and they wanted to gain fame and clout by doing some investigating themselves. What they didn’t realize was just how horrific their encounters here would be. Let’s find out more about the movie and the real Gonjiam haunted asylum.
The Gonjiam Movie (Spoilers)
During the Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum film, two boys decide to go explore the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital. They had heard rumors that hundreds of people were killed here and patients had gone missing. The director of the hospital was rumored to have been killed here as well. The two of them knew that the most paranormal activity was coming from Room 402, which was the intensive care unit. As they filmed their mission, they caught a look of a very ghostly face. Shortly after, they disappeared. Ha-Joon decides to get a crew of people together who also want to know more about the asylum. Ha-Joon’s YouTube channel is called “Horror Times” and he just knows that going to the asylum will boost viewers and soon he will become famous. However, what he has in mind isn’t exactly what he gets.

After getting his crew together, Ha-Joon is ready to begin his live broadcast at the asylum. He decides that he will stay at base camp while the others go inside and broadcast everything that they see inside the psychiatric hospital. Shortly after they go inside, it comes out that there is a script for what they will do and say when they enter the asylum. They have put together some ghost-hunting antics that they feel their fans will really love.
Even though there is a script to their live broadcast, it seems as if the spirits in the asylum have something planned of their own. The group finds strange coffins in the building and when one of the women puts her hand in a hole, she pulls it out and finds that she has been wounded horribly. This disturbs a few others in the group and they decide that this is not what they had in mind. They feel that it is time to leave.
During the film, each member sees paranormal and unexplainable events. They are attacked by these strange forces and eventually, the infra-red cameras pick up a dark presence in Room 402. As Ha-Joon is watching his team go underwater in the room, with no escape, he sees that the YouTube channel has gotten almost a million views. He goes to check this out and he ends up getting strangled to death by the ghost of the director of the asylum.
One last member of the crew is left, Seung-Wook and he eventually admits that the entire investigation was supposed to be scripted. The live stream cuts off shortly after he admits to this and as the movie ends, the dish of holy water begins to boil.

The most well-known ghost is the Stove-Hatted Gent. It is said that he was involved in a murder in the nearby area in the 18th century. This man is a Victorian ghost who is said to wear a black top hat and walks around the store freely. Customers and staff members have seen him in the store, and he is generally seen on the sixth floor. According to paranormal researchers,
“He appears on the Jermyn Street side of the business, dressed like an Isambard Kingdom Brunel.”

“She was a spinster sister of Richard Fortnum. She never married and suffered from acute bronchitis most of her adult life.”
It is speculated that she wishes to leave the apartment, but she still lingers around, trying to get out and go to her family.
2nd and 3rd Floors
Fortnum and Mason’s second and third floors have had a lot of paranormal activity. The third floor is where a young man fell to his death when the store was being rebuilt in 1929. He allegedly haunts the stock room and has scared off a lot of the staff here. The second floor is known for the poltergeist that inhabits the area. According to paranormal experts,
“It moves heavy objects around and is always moving the soaps overnight. Have on CCTV the shape of a figure (male) at 3 am. On one occasion, he threw a large and extremely heavy large crystal globe across the floor. This pest has been doing his nighttime moving since the 1950s. New staff don’t believe the old-timers when they first start working on the floor, but after a few weeks of having to put everything in its right place in the morning, they are convinced.”
Ground Floor Pushing Ghost
The ground floor also has a pesky ghost lingering about. This one is called the Pushing Ghost. There have been reports that customers and staff members are constantly being pushed toward what is known as the Crypt. This ghost doesn’t like the cleaning staff and is constantly pushing them. Many staff members are very wary of this ghost and do not want to be alone on the ground floor late at night.
