The legends of Crybaby Bridges have been around for centuries. A Crybaby Bridge is a pretty general term that can apply to quite a few bridges in the United States. The urban legends about these bridges involve ghost stories where witnesses have heard babies crying. These urban legends may feature stories of car accidents on the bridge, infanticide, or other events that ended up full of heartbreak and sorrow.

One famous urban legend about Crybaby bridges is that a mother threw her baby off of the bridge and ended up feeling so terrible afterward that she ended up jumping off the bridge herself. Now, the baby’s ghost continues to cry, or the mother is crying for the loss of her child on the bridge. There are no locations specific to one story, so many bridges have this name. Different states have a variety of bridges with these names; depending on the lore, culture, and region, they vary quite a bit. We want to introduce you to the many Crybaby Bridges in the United States and the tales that they hold.

Crybaby Bridge Locations

Kentucky’s Crybaby Bridge

Those familiar with Sleepy Hollow Road in Kentucky have told stories of their own Crybaby Bridge. The bridge is between Oldham and Jefferson County. One of the legends states that a mother with her new baby was driving home in a terrible storm. It was late at night, and as they were going over the bridge, the car’s steering wheel began to jerk, and the mother couldn’t control it. This led the car to spin and swerve, and when the mother tried to brake, the brakes failed. She ended up hitting the side of the bridge, and the impact threw the mother and the baby out of the windshield. This is a legend of the bridge, and there was never any proof that it happened or that the so-called bodies were ever found.

Another part of the legend is that drivers can come out to the bridge slightly before midnight. Then, it is rumored that if the drivers cover their car in baby powder and then return to it at midnight, they will hear baby laughter and thumping on their car. When they get out of the car, they will see baby footprints all over it. There are also rumors that drivers can hear the cries of babies while in their car.

A final legend about the Crybaby Bridge in Kentucky is that it leads to a time warp. There have been several people driving onto the bridge who claimed that they lost hours at a time. Some even claimed that they had lost days from being on this bridge.

Crybaby Bridge – Salem, Ohio

Not too far from Kentucky is Salem, Ohio. This Crybaby Bridge has a few legends of its own, and it is very well-known because of the visitors who come here to try and discover if these legends are true. The bridge is closed and abandoned, but that doesn’t stop people from coming to see what the big deal is all about. The rusted bridge holds plenty of dark secrets, and those who visit do their best to find out what these secrets are.

One of the most popular legends about this bridge began in the 1930s. The story is that a couple was having a picnic near the bridge when they got into a heated argument. They were so upset with one another that they didn’t even notice that a child was walking on the bridge. The child fell off of the bridge and fell into ice-cold water. The couple continued to fight, and they were so loud that they didn’t even hear the child crying and trying to get out of the water.

Another legend about this bridge is that there was a woman who came to the bridge as a way to kill her baby, who was born out of wedlock. The woman’s family disowned her because of the baby, and this is where she ended her life and the life of her baby. A local historian claimed, “By the time she has her baby, she’s starving. After she has the baby, the baby is starving. So, she decides to end the baby’s suffering by taking it to Crybaby Bridge and throwing it over the side.”

The legends may be quite different, but at midnight, like clockwork, the sounds of a baby crying can be heard. Many paranormal investigations have taken place on this Crybaby Bridge. The investigators have heard many sounds coming from the bridge, including someone saying, “Get out!”

Crybaby Bridge – Maryland

In Mitchellville, Maryland, there is yet another Cry Baby Bridge legend. This is one of the most popular legends in Maryland, and carloads of thrill seekers often find themselves trying to determine what will happen to them on Crybaby Bridge.

The tales begin with a young woman who is in an argument with her husband in their car. Their baby, who is in the backseat, won’t stop crying as the couple continues to scream at one another. The husband decides they need to pull over to try and get the baby to stop crying and screaming. The bridge was very rickety, and as the husband drove, he swerved the car over it. This threw the baby out of the car and into the cold water below. The couple was hysterical, so they drove away, and the baby ended up dying in the water.

Of course, there isn’t much proof to back up this story, but ghost hunters often find themselves driving to the bridge to see if they will experience the legend. They want to hear the baby’s crying, and some have claimed that they can see floating ghosts in the area. This area allegedly has served as a dumping ground for dead bodies since the 1940s and is surrounded by very creepy woods.

Crybaby Bridges – Texas

There are multiple Crybaby Bridges in Texas. One is located in DeKalb, Texas, and is also known as Spook Bridge. The legend of this bridge is about a mother who drove her car off of the bridge into the creek. This caused her baby to get thrown out of the car and into the water. That is where the baby ended up drowning. There is another similar legend about the Crybaby Bridge in Lufkin, Texas. Those who have visited the bridge claim that when they drove away, they would see a baby’s handprint on one of the car windows.

In Port Neches, Texas, the Crybaby Bridge is also called the Sarah Jane Bridge. Sarah Jane is the alleged name of a girl who was murdered there. The tale of this bridge is that a man murdered a woman here, and then he threw her baby into the water. The water was infested with alligators, and they killed the baby shortly after it was thrown into this water. The baby’s name was Sarah Jane, according to the legend. The legend states that Sarah Jane’s mother’s ghost continues to look for the baby, and she can be seen and heard looking for her.

Crybaby Bridge – South Carolina

In Anderson, South Carolina, there is yet another legend of the Crybaby Bridge. This bridge is located on High Shoals Road and is quite popular, especially in October. During the time that this bridge was being built, there were a few fatalities and injuries. One of the workers fell to his death. According to one of the legends, he can be heard at night calling out “Maya” since he died just days before his daughter, Maya, was born.

This isn’t the only story about Crybaby Bridge, though. There are plenty of stories about people drawing under the bridge and throwing themselves off it. There is also a horrible story about how a mother threw her newborn baby off of the bridge, and then weeks later, she went back there to hang herself.

For those who have come to see if these legends are real, some have mentioned that they have seen a young girl hanging from the bridge late at night. While she is hanging there, she tells her baby not to cry. There is also a story that if drivers stop their cars on the bridge at night, a woman will come to the window and scream at the driver that she is the one who killed her baby on Crybaby Bridge.

Folklore Attached to Crybaby Bridges

Almost every state has a legend of Crybaby Bridge. It is one of those urban legends that doesn’t change the subject matter much but is still good for a scary story or two. The folklore behind Crybaby Bridges has grown with the invention of the internet, and it is amazing how many ghost hunters have popped up all over the United States to check out these bridges.

There have been stories of Crybaby Bridges that go back to the days of slavery when escaped slaves would use these bridges to run to safety. In some cases, the legends began when the escaped slaves were murdered. However, these legends weren’t shared as much online as in oral history and books.

All Of The Films Inspired By Ghost Hunters Ed & Lorraine Warren

Ed and Lorraine Warren gained popularity with most people when Hollywood started creating movies based on their real-life cases. These worldwide known ghost investigators had a talent for assisting families who moved into haunted homes. Their journey began in the late 1960s, and over the decades, they worked extensively with haunted houses and families who unfortunately lived in them. Let’s delve into the movies that were inspired by the Warrens’ experiences.

Movies Based On Ed and Lorraine Warren’s Investigations

Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror is one of the most terrifying films ever made. The film is based on the same book and was released in 1979. The book was based on the haunting experiences of the Lutz family when they moved into the home.

In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six of his family members in the home on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. He was eventually convicted of second-degree murder in November 1975. He was sentenced to serve 25 years to life in prison. He died while he was in prison in 2021. Unaware of this story, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the Amityville house in December 1975. The realtor did end up telling them that there were some horrible murders in the home, but that didn’t seem to bother them at all. They felt that it was their dream come true. This house seemed to be a new start for them, and they were ready to raise their family there.

After living there for a very short time, the Lutz family began to experience some unexplainable paranormal events. When they moved into the house, one of George’s friends mentioned that they should get the home blessed by a priest. Neither George nor Kathy were religious, so they didn’t know what that meant.

The Catholic church sent Father Mancuso to their home to bless it. When he went into their home, he felt terrified. He heard a masculine voice telling him to leave the house. He told no one about his visit to the home and allegedly ended up getting very sick with a high fever and blisters after he left the home. The symptoms were much like those of people who claim they have stigmata.

The Real Amityville House

The Lutz family began to experience horrifying paranormal events in their home. Some of the rooms would be swarmed with flies for one second, and then they would vanish. They would also feel a “very strong force” that was trying to push them out of the house. There were stories of green ooze coming out of the walls and the water sometimes turning black in the baths and toilets. Not only this, but the children claimed to see a pig face with red eyes and a demon figure in a white hood. The Lutz family was driven to their breaking point on January 14, 1976. They left everything they owed behind and would never step into the house again.

Ed and Lorraine Warren were called to help the Lutz family with these paranormal events. Lorraine could feel the terrifying spirits in the home, so they did everything they could to help. After being there, the Lutz family wanted nothing else to do with the home.

Rumors have circulated that the Lutz family faked everything to become rich off of this story. Although proof of some of the paranormal events has been found, the Lutz family continues to say that it all happened to them in the Amityville house.

The Haunted

The Haunted was released in 1991, and it was one of the first films to actually use the Warrens as characters. This film didn’t get too much attention when it was released and has practically been forgotten about. It was based on the Smurl family haunting, a case that Ed and Lorraine Warren worked on and spent quite a bit of time on.

Janet Smurl moved into a home in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and felt it was the perfect home for them. It didn’t take long for the family to start encountering paranormal activity. The family would see strange figures walking around their home, and they would hear horrifying sounds at night. Strange stains would also start to show up on the walls of the home.

The Smurl family wasn’t sure how to deal with everything happening in the home. Janet found out about Ed and Lorraine and called them to get some help with these encounters. She felt like someone was trying to push her family out of the home, but she knew they couldn’t leave; they had put everything into this house. The Warrens discovered that there was a lot more going on in the home than anyone ever thought.

The Haunting in Connecticut

Released in 2009, The Haunting in Connecticut, based on the Snedeker House, focused on a family going through a terrible time in their lives. Sara Campbell and her son, Matt, were going through a challenging time in life. Matt, her son, was going through cancer treatments, and she and her husband, Peter, needed to find a home closer to the hospital.

The Real Snedeker House

Sara and Peter were also going through a hard time in their marriage. He was an alcoholic, and she was waiting tables and picking up any odd jobs that she could in order to help her son. As the couple discussed finding a rental home, Sara drove by one and knew it was fate. The homeowner was frustrated that no one wanted to live in it. He offered the family a free month if they would move in quickly. This didn’t strike the family as strange, and they felt that this was supposed to be their home.

The family decides that this is a deal they can’t refuse. They move in, and immediately, paranormal events begin to occur. Matt finds some strange pictures in his room, which is in the basement, and then Peter finds out that the home was a funeral home at some point. Matt begins to see visions in the home, and soon, there are figures in his room, and the more they show up, the closer they get to him.

A Haunting in Connecticut got a lot of backlash. Critics claim that Ed and Lorraine Warren sensationalized this entire story, and none of these events ever happened to the family. The Warrens always stood by their story that all of these events did happen inside this house.

The Conjuring franchise solidified Ed and Lorraine Warren’s validity in these paranormal cases. The movies began with the paranormal tales from the Perron family and their haunted house. Many critics claim that the first Conjuring film was fictionalized to add to its horror. This movie was one of the first-ever movies to show the Warrens as heroes to those who called them for help. The franchise has made Ed and Lorraine seem more positive than all the rumors about them in the 1970s and 80s.

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 featured a family’s home in England. In the 1970s, the family was terrified by a poltergeist. In this film, the Hodgson family experiences a lot of paranormal activity in their home. Interestingly enough, Lorraine actually had a vision during the seance of a demonic nun figure. This ended up being the demon that was haunting the Hodgson family. This was the first film where the demon Valak was introduced into the Conjuring film franchise.

The Real Conjuring 2 House

In the Hodgson home, some of the children began to show signs that they had been possessed. One of the children, Janet, was seen levitating and growling like a demon. The Warrens found out about their story and wanted to know what was happening in this home. They wanted to be able to prove if this possession was a hoax. Lorraine wasn’t sure that she wanted to get involved after seeing visions of Ed being killed there.

The Warrens did come to see the Hodgson’s home and got help from other paranormal experts. The Warrens felt as if the family was lying to become famous, but later found out that Janet was, indeed, possessed by the demon in the home. Ed and Lorraine ended up saving Janet and her family, and they ended up moving away from the home.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is yet another film in The Conjuring franchise in which Ed and Lorraine Warren appear. This movie is about a man who asks a demon to possess him instead of his girlfriend’s child. Ed Warren watches as the man is possessed, and that is when he suffers from a heart attack. Arne Johnson begins to act very strangely after being possessed.

Arne ended up killing his landlord after he stabbed him 22 times. He told the police that the demon inside of him was what made him do it. The Warrens felt they needed to testify for Arne since they saw the possession and were part of it. However, Arne ends up going to prison no matter how much Ed and Lorraine stand up for him.

**The Annabelle Films**

The Annabelle movies gave horror lovers a big scare with the face of this creepy doll. A medical student named John Form bought the creepy doll for his expecting wife, Mia. In the movie, it was a porcelain doll, but in real life, Ed and Lorraine Warren kept a Raggedy Ann doll named Annabelle in a glass case.

It turned out that the doll was possessed by the spirit of a girl named Annabelle. Paranormal events began to happen in John and Mia’s home, and as soon as she gave birth to their daughter, Leah, things seemed to get even worse. They contacted a priest to help them; they just wanted peace from this spirit. After the doll disappeared, it reappeared when a woman bought it for her daughter, Debbie. Debbie was a nursing student and took the doll to her home. Her story is seen in the first half of The Conjuring film.

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home is yet another installment of a film inspired by Ed and Lorraine Warren. In this film, the Warrens have a babysitter come over to watch their daughter Judy for one night. The babysitter, Mary Ellen, invites a friend over. Daniela, her friend, goes into the Warrens’ haunted and cursed objects room. As she pokes around, she sees the Annabelle doll and decides to let her out. This ends up causing some horrible paranormal events.

Although most of the events in this movie were made up, fans of the franchise enjoyed it. This movie was dedicated to Lorraine Warren, who died on April 18, 2019.

Other movies seem to be inspired by the Warrens but do not give them much credit in the films themselves. The Nun, The Nun 2, and various seasons of American Horror Story were all inspired by the Warrens in some type of way. All of the movies in The Conjuring franchise pay homage in one way or another to the Warrens and everything that they did for families that faced paranormal events in their homes.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion Around The World

Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion ride is a favorite among visitors worldwide. The chilling and thrilling ride showcases the spooky ghosts and haunts alive and well at Disneyland. However, this isn’t the only version of The Haunted Mansion at the Disney parks.

Here, we will explore all five Haunted Mansions in Disney parks worldwide. We will share what inspired them and just how haunted they are. We will break down the ghosts still haunting these rides and how exciting they are when visitors finally have the chance to ride them.

All 5 Disney Haunted Mansions

The Haunted Mansion: Disneyland

The original Haunted Mansion is located in Disneyland in Anaheim, California. This ride opened on August 9, 1969, in the New Orleans Square area of Disneyland and resembles an old Southern Plantation. Walt Disney actually helped to build this Haunted Mansion himself. This ride was so extravagant that it took a few more years than Disney anticipated. In fact, Walt Disney didn’t live to see it open, but he could see some of the vision come to life.

This Haunted Mansion sat for six years until the Imagineers finally put the final touches on it. Signs in front of the Haunted Mansion told visitors it would open soon, reading:

“Notice! All ghosts and restless spirits. Post-lifetime leases are now available at this haunted mansion. Don’t be left in the sunshine! Enjoy active retirement in this country club atmosphere- the fashionable address for famous ghosts trying to make a name for themselves… and ghosts afraid to live by themselves! Leases include a license to scare the daylights out of guests visiting the Portrait Gallery, Museum of the Supernatural, graveyard, and other happy-hunting grounds. For reservations, send a resume of part experience to Ghost Relations Dept. Disneyland Please! Do not apply in person.”

Even though this Haunted Mansion looks very similar to the one at the Magic Kingdom in Florida, there are a lot of differences. When you begin your journey here, you will walk through the beautiful gardens and gothic columns. While walking through, you will run into the Hatbox Ghost, one of the scariest characters guests meet in the Haunted Mansion. This character is not featured in the Haunted Mansion in the Magic Kingdom.

One of the best features of this Haunted Mansion is that every September through December, it is transformed into a Nightmare Before Christmas. This has been a tradition since 2001, and ghosts have even been replaced to pay tribute to one of Disneyland’s favorite movies.

The Haunted Mansion: The Magic Kingdom

In Orlando, Florida, visitors to the Magic Kingdom will find another version of the Haunted Mansion. This ride was fashioned after a Dutch Gothic and Hudson River Valley-style home. It is located in Liberty Square, and one of the most unique features of this ride is the endless staircase room.

The Haunted Mansion in Walt Disney World opened in 1971 and was an opening-day attraction. The outside of the home is modeled to look a lot like the other styles in Liberty Square. It was inspired by the Harry Packer Mansion in Pennsylvania.

In this ride, visitors jump into their Doombuggies and are ready to take on the haunts this ride offers. Guests will see ghostly paintings, portraits, and creaking floorboards and whispers throughout the ride. The ghosts here are dying to welcome guests and show them what the Mansion offers. The Ghost Host welcomes all guests who dare to walk into the mansion.

One of the characters that guests encounter is Madame Leota. A sinister bride named Constance Hatchaway also welcomes guests. This Haunted Mansion was built to copy the Disneyland attraction after it grew in popularity. Both rides feature some of the same decor and furniture.

The Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion is longer than the Disneyland ride. It has some more elaborate scenes, such as the staircase room inspired by M.C. Escher. This room was actually an add-on when the ride underwent a complete renovation in 2007. Before it was the staircase room, there was a black room where spiders were dangling from the ceiling.

The Haunted Mansion: Tokyo Disneyland

The Haunted Mansion in Tokyo Disneyland opened in April 1983. On the outside, it looks almost exactly like the Mansion in the Magic Kingdom; it is a little bit rougher, though. It is located in Fantasyland, part of the park. One of the most unique features of this ride is the time capsule of the Magic Kingdom’s mansion.

This ride perfectly combines the Haunted Mansion in the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland. It hasn’t been renovated yet, and the storytelling and ghosts are all original to this ride. In the Tokyo Disney version, the spiders are still in place during the ride, and there is no endless staircase like that in the Magic Kingdom.

Visitors who have come here feel the ride is pretty spectacular; however, it doesn’t match the Fantasyland theme in Tokyo Disney’s park. Tokyo Disney also likes to dress up the Haunted Mansion for Halloween with Nightmare Before Christmas attire.

Phantom Manor: Disneyland Paris

Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris opened on April 12, 1992. The house is modeled after the Second Empire style and is located in Frontierland. Those who have visited the Haunted Mansions feel that Phantom Manor is the scariest. This mansion was inspired by the Fourth Ward School in Virginia City, Nevada, and fits into Frontierland perfectly.

Phantom Manor focuses on the bride of the manor whose husband didn’t make it to their wedding. This ride has many elements that were also incorporated into the other rides in the Disney parks. There are singing busts and creepy paintings, and Madame Leota shows up, too. However, this ride is much darker.

Unfortunately, there is no graveyard at the end, but visitors ride through the Phantom Canyon, a creepy version of a Western town that only the dead would want to live in.

Mystic Manor: Hong Kong Disneyland

The Mystic Manor in Hong Kong Disneyland opened on May 17th, 2013. The manor is modeled after a Victorian home and is located in Mystic Point in the theme park. This ride has some very interesting things. In fact, instead of being haunted, it is all about the magic that is inside.

Because of Chinese cultural differences, this mansion does not mention ghosts or the undead. When visitors walk into the Mystic Manor, they may be surprised to learn more about the enchanted magic box and its power.

This enchanted music box has the power to bring inanimate objects to life. Most visitors feel as if the idea resembles Beauty and the Beast. On the outside of the manor, visitors can see that the building looks much like the Bradbury Mansion in Los Angeles. The mansion was demolished, but the designers were inspired by it.

Visitors to the Mystic Manor enjoy the more lighthearted feel to it. This mansion has some beautiful features, such as busts and portraits that feature gods and goddesses and some magical decor.

Haunted Mansion Movies

The Haunted Mansion 2002

The Haunted Mansion has been very popular since the first ride opened. So far, two movies have been based on the theme park ride. In 2003, a movie, Haunted Mansion, was released featuring Eddie Murphy. After the popularity of this film in 2010, there were rumors that another Haunted Mansion movie was coming and that Ryan Gosling and Guillermo del Toro would be involved.

The Haunted Mansion 2023

There have been a lot of changes since the Eddie Murphy movie was released. The decision to make another film came in March of 2023. The remake’s cast includes Rosario Dawson, Owen Wilson, Laeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Jamie Lee Curtis as Madame Leota, and Jared Leto as the Hatbox Ghost.

The original film was about two real estate agents trapped in the Haunted Mansion with their children. The new movie is about a single mother, Dawson, and her 9-year-old son. They moved into the New Orleans mansion, hoping this would be a fresh start for them. They learn very quickly that this home is not exactly what they anticipated. The paranormal events begin very quickly after they move in, and they are looking for a way to live with these ghosts or get out of the house.

Muppets Haunted Mansion

Let us not forget about Kermit and Miss Piggy’s Version of the classic. In this 2021 Muppets version, Gonzo the Great and Pepe the King Prawn decide to test themselves by spending a night in, you guessed it, a haunted mansion. Will they survive the night? Find out for yourself on Disney+.

Hauntings of India

Bhangarh Fort

The 16th-century Bhangarh fort, located in the Alwar district of Rajasthan, India, is one of the most haunted places in the country. The Bhangarh Fort was built in 1573 AD by Raja Bhagwant Singh, the ruler of Amber. His great-grandson, Ajab Singh, built a nearby fort called the Ajabgarh.

It is widely believed that the stepsister of Ajab Singh, the gorgeous princess Ratnavati, had received many marriage proposals from many men. She had caught the eye of a Tantrik priest, who knew that he was ill-suited to be with the princess. However, he was literate in black magic and used his skills to enchant a perfume bottle to make the princess fall in love with him. Ratnavati learned of his actions and threw the bottle at the priest, which turned into a boulder and crushed him. In his final words, he cursed the princess, her lineage, and her village.

A year later, the Bhangarh and Ajabgarh went to battle, resulting in the death of the princess and most of the Ajabgarh army. It is believed that due to the curse on the village, nobody can be reborn, and therefore, the village remains desolate.

There are other versions of how the curse came to be placed on the village, but it is universally accepted that an otherworldly force haunts the fort and that anyone who enters after dark will die before exiting. Due to its haunting curse, the Archaeological Survey of India has officially prohibited entrance to this fort after dark. Would you check this place out?

Jatinga

Jatinga is a small village located in the Dima Hasao district in Assam, India, with a population of only 2,500 people. Despite its quaint appearance, Jatinga houses a strange phenomenon: bird suicides. It is known as a terminus for birds, especially during the late monsoon months from September to November. Dumas Beach, located near a Hindu burial ground along the Arabian Sea in Gujarat, India, is one of the most popular tourist attractions during the daytime. Barog Tunnel

Train buffs unite! The Barog Tunnel, or Tunnel 33, of the Shimla-Kalka Railway, is said to be haunted by one of its architects. During the 20th-century colonial rule of India, the British government tasked Colonel Barog with building a tunnel for the railway under construction. He made a mistake in calculation and constructed parallel tunnels, which made him publicly shamed. Barog shot himself in the unfinished tunnel pictured above out of embarrassment and shame. It was eventually finished by another engineer, and a small town was built around the tunnel, whose locals say that the Colonel can be seen every now and then around the tunnel. Despite its charming yellow walls and well-kept garden, this Kota attraction called Brijraj Bhawan Palace Hotel holds a haunting secret. As the Sepoy Mutiny broke out, the palace was attacked by natives, and the Major was murdered alongside his children. It is rumored that after the attack, the king of Kota at the time recovered the bodies of the English and buried them in the central hall of the palace. If you dare, this hotel is available for booking. Along with its luxury experience, it also comes with spooky roommates, as the spirits of the Burtons are told to roam the palace halls.

The Conjuring movies have become one of the best horror franchises in horror movie history. Ed and Lorraine Warren were featured in most of these films, as they investigated quite a few haunted locations and took artifacts from a few of the sites where these horrifying events occurred. Let’s take a deeper look at the places and artifacts from The Conjuring.

The Perron Family Estate

The Conjuring was based on the Perron Family’s paranormal experiences in their Burrillville, Rhode Island home. It was first known as the Old Arnold Estates, and generations of families have lived here. The house is now used as a haunted bed and breakfast and thrill seekers can spend the night here.

The Annabelle doll was one of the artifacts taken from the first Conjuring movie. This doll is locked up in the Warrens’ haunted and cursed museum. The Annabelle doll has been featured in multiple movies in the franchise. The doll doesn’t look anything like the creepy one in the movies; it is an old Raggedy Ann doll. The doll was inhabited by the spirit of a child named Annabelle Higgins. When the Warrens investigated the doll, they claimed it was inhabited by a demonic spirit. The doll has been exorcised, but it was unsuccessful. The Annabelle doll is still locked in a glass case and will never be opened again.

The Perron Family Music Box is another artifact that was taken from the Perron house in the first Conjuring movie. In the movie, the youngest Perron child, April, discovers an old music box in their house. She used it to communicate with a spirit named Rory. He was killed by his mother, Bathsheba. When Lorraine looks at the music box, she sees the face of the child in it. At the end of The Conjuring, Ed and Lorraine take the music box to keep in their room of artifacts. There are rumors that it will still open up and play music on its own.

Ed and Lorraine Warren also took a toy monkey from Perron’s home. They claimed that it was possessed as well. There is only a small glimpse at it in The Conjuring. It is seen when Ed talks to a reporter about what is in the room. He tells him, “Everything you see here is either haunted, cursed, or used in some kind of ritualistic practice. Nothing is a toy. Not even the toy monkey. Don’t touch it!”

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 was a movie about a haunting in London, England. The Enfield poltergeist happened in the home of Peggy Hodgson and her children. The family claimed that evil spirits haunted the house. The children say they saw furniture moving and heard knocking on the walls. The family wouldn’t go upstairs, lived in the living room together for 18 months, and were terrified of going anywhere else in the house. Over those 18 months, over 30 people witnessed the haunting in this home.

There is still a lot of speculation that this family made up all of the paranormal events that happened here. There were photos and videos of the events, but some think Peggy made it all up to become famous. The children are all grown up now and have tried to keep their lives as private as possible.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It takes place in 1981 in Brookfield, Connecticut. The Warrens went to help out an eight-year-old boy named David Glatzel. His family was present when a demon possessed him. In fact, his sister’s boyfriend, Arne, wanted David to be safe again and told the demon to take his body instead. While the demon took over Arne’s body, Ed Warren had a heart attack as he watched it happen.

Arne made a lot of horrible decisions while he was under the demon’s possession. It turns out that he stabbed his landlord 22 times. His defense for the entirety of his court hearing was that he was possessed by a demon. The Warrens were at his trial to testify and had quite a bit of proof to show the court, but Arne was convicted of manslaughter. The Annabelle doll that the Warrens have in their collection was featured in this movie as well.

Annabelle

Annabelle took place in Santa Monica, California, when John Form bought his wife, Mia, a porcelain doll meant for their first child, Leah. They added it to the collection of dolls in the nursery and just knew that she would love it. The family began to experience some very bizarre events in the home when they added the doll. They were attacked by two members of a cult, and one of them killed herself while she was holding the doll in their home.

Mia and Leah were attacked by a demon a few times, and they ended up calling a priest to exorcise the demon. Father Perez comes to them, and he tells them that demons are known for attaching themselves to objects like dolls. Father Perez takes the doll from Mia and John and gives it to the Warrens.

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation features the Annabelle doll locked up in the Warren’s collection. This film is all about how the doll was created by a dollmaker named Samuel Mullins. He and his wife suffered a horrible loss when their daughter, Annabelle, was hit by a car. He and his wife wanted to feel the love of a child again, so they took in six children from the local orphanage.

The demon in the doll began to stir up paranormal activity for Samuel and the children. The demon also posed as one of the nuns, Sister Charlotte. The events that took place at the hands of the Annabelle doll were horrendous. This is why the Warrens kept the doll in a glass case; that is where she remains today.

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home occurs right after Ed and Lorraine Warren take her home and lock her in a glass case. The Warrens hired a babysitter, Mary Ellen, to watch their daughter, Judy. They wanted a night out together, and Mary Ellen seemed the perfect fit. However, one of Mary Ellen’s friends shows up at their home and decides to sneak into the collection room, and she opens up Annabelle’s case. This is when multiple spirits get released.

One of the many artifacts from this movie is the Samurai armor, which is one of the main attractions in the museum. Judy and Mary Ellen’s friend stare in awe at this armor. They could even hear the battle cries of the Samurai coming from it. Not only that, they could hear the screams of his victims as well.

The Shadow Doll

There are hundreds of different cursed and haunted items in the Warren’s Museum. Their daughter, Judy, is now in charge of it. One item that hasn’t been featured in the films is the shadow doll. This is a very creepy handmade doll. The story is that it will visit people in their dreams and can even stop their hearts while they are sleeping.

The haunted Queen Mary will transform itself into one of America’s Top Haunted attractions. Beginning September 20, 2024, and running through November 2nd, The Dark Harbor will feature live entertainment, bars and lounges, haunted mazes, spooky food offerings, and a haunted stroll through the Queen Mary herself. It wouldn’t be a visit to the Queen without appearances from The Captain, Ringmaster, and Scary Mary herself.

Poveglia Island- Venice

Poveglia Island is known as one of the most haunted places in the world. For years, it has been off-limits to visitors; however, there is a way that you can see it. If you are taking a boat ride in Venice, you will be able to catch glimpses of the haunted island. This island is incredibly terrifying, but there is also some controversy that comes along with it.

What makes this island so haunted? It is known as an island of death. There were over 160,000 plague victims who lost their lives here. More than half of the soil on the island contains human remains. On some parts of the island, you can see human skeletons out in the open. This island was filled with death, pain, and punishment. Not only that, but there was an asylum on the island as well. The amount of ghosts and spirits on this island is not for the faint of heart.

Castello Di Montebello

One of the creepiest stories to come out of Italy is about this haunted castle. The mystery of a little girl who was murdered still haunts this castle. It happened on June 21, 1375. A child, who was five years old named Guendalina was outside the castle playing. Her father was the Lord Ugolinuccio da Montebello. The child generally had two guards by her no matter what. The child also needed to be protected because she was albino and couldn’t be out in the sun. She was known in the village as Azzurrina, the little blue one, because of her bright blue eyes.

When her father came out to see where his child was, he and the guards could not find her. It turns out that she was running after a cloth ball and ended up downstairs. She went to the dungeon, and this is where she supposedly was murdered. There is still no real answer as to what happened to the child, but when people come to visit the castle they think that they see her ghost. Visitors can hear her cries; some have seen her piercing blue eyes. The rumor is that she cries on the summer solstice every five years.

Evil Tower: Castello Di Poppi

For those who love a haunted experience, the Evil Tower is one that you just can’t miss. There is a spirit that many visitors have seen here named Matelda. She was a beautiful Italian woman who was arrested for the murder of her lover. She was given the death sentence, and her ghost just couldn’t stay away from the tower.

Matilda haunts the castle and plenty of visitors have seen and heard her walking the castle. She was a maid there, so she spent most of her time trying to find laundry or cleaning the rooms of the castle. Visitors have felt her presence all over the castle and some have mentioned that her ghost does seem heartbroken.

Catacombs of Rome

For ghost hunters who enjoy going to underground haunts, the Catacombs of Rome are just the place for you. These are ancient burial grounds, meaning many spirits just lingering about. Rome had some strict laws about burials inside of the city, and these underground passages were a place for those who wanted to bury their loved ones.

There have been at least 40 different catacombs discovered in Rome, but not all of them have public access. These catacombs are narrow tunnels of darkness where ghost hunters and paranormal seekers can tap into a whole world of the terrifying. The catacombs house thousands of mummified bodies and skeletons sure to creep you out.

The House of Souls: Genoa

For those in search of some haunted thrills, The House of Souls in Genoa is the place to be. Many haven’t dared to spend one whole night here, but if you do, you are in for it. The house is uninhabited, but there have been plenty of ghost sightings and sounds of moaning coming from inside. These sinister sounds will keep anyone away, but if you are seeking some creepiness, this is the place to go.

Some legends have stemmed from this house. It was an inn in the past and one legend states that the owners were murdered here. When the house was an inn, they used lowered ceilings, and in one of the rooms, the killer lowered the ceiling and it ended up crushing the owners in their sleep. The killer then used the help of a gang to get rid of the bodies. These could be the real reason that visitors hear the terrifying sounds of them at night.

Abandoned Hospital: Colorno

Ghost hunters from all over the world have been known to seek out abandoned hospitals. The hospital in Colorno is located in the province of Parma. In 1873, it was used as a shelter when cholera broke out. Not only did the sick seek shelter here, but soon, it led to a place for vagrants, sex workers, and abandoned children. The conditions here were anything but hygienic, and there was a lot of death here.

After the hospital got a facelift, it became a psychiatric hospital. While it was a hospital, the methods that were used here varied from straightjackets and electroshock therapy. The windows all had bars on them, and those who lived here were not treated well. With all of the souls who passed away here, those who come to visit the abandoned hospital have heard moans and screams and even seen people walking around crying. This is where plenty of souls were lost.

A new supermarket and an official post office were established elsewhere in the tiny town. The old store transformed over the years, gradually evolving into a livable home, while still retaining its original exterior appearance as a general store.

In 2006, the Midcalf family acquired the property and embarked on renovations. The patriarch, Mike Midcalf, noticed a peculiar phenomenon: a steady stream of people would drive by, park, and reminisce about the home’s antiquated past. Being the friendly type, Mike often extended invitations for tours, but every visitor declined to set foot inside the house.

The kitchen area within this historic home harbors some of the most chilling experiences. Mike’s wife encountered a terrifying incident while washing dishes one afternoon. A pair of ice-cold hands seized her wrists, refusing to release their grip without a struggle! Meanwhile, their son Josh faced his own eerie encounter. Late one evening, he ventured into the kitchen for a midnight snack, only to find himself inexplicably trapped. An overwhelming negative presence seemed to confine him within those walls. Summoning his courage, Josh attempted to pass through, but the room suddenly filled with billowing black smoke. Frozen in terror, he cleared the back kitchen counter, climbed upon it, and spent the entire night in a fetal position, unable to cross the threshold until sunrise dispersed the ominous haze.

A mere three miles from the Midcalf home, the Pomeraning brothers—Terry and Dwayne—resided in their own haunted abode. Their home, once a fading general store, had been converted into a livable house around the late 1890s. However, growing up within those walls, the Pomeraning brothers would later recall that their childhood was marred by unsettling events.

In 1974, during a fateful June evening, the Pomeraning family settled into bed. Terry and Duane were abruptly awakened by furious rapping on the east side of the house. The knocking echoed both inside and outside, devoid of any discernible pattern—just a relentless, violent rhythm. Alarmed, their father suspected a possible break-in and promptly called the police.

Retired police sergeant Charles Frisby and his partner arrived as the first responders. To their bewilderment, they found no signs of forced entry or trespassing. Yet, the inexplicable rapping persisted, beating relentlessly in their presence—an unseen force orchestrating the eerie cadence.

The following night, Terry and Duane again heard the same haunting knocks. Their father summoned the police once more, but the outcome remained unchanged: no visible source for the unsettling sounds. This unsettling cycle of nocturnal disturbances and emergency calls persisted for six months. The local police department’s records in Merrill documented nightly dispatches, yet officers discovered no prowlers or plausible origins for the ghostly rapping.

The strain on the Pomeraning family’s emotions was immense. Young Duane, overwhelmed by fear, cried himself to sleep each night. Desperate for answers, state police, state fire marshals, and even a geological seismologist descended upon the Pomeraning property, seeking to unravel the enigma that plagued their home. The echoes of that relentless knocking still reverberate through the annals of Merrill’s haunted history.

As the haunting intensified, the Pomeraning family found themselves ensnared in a web of inexplicable events. Rushing to the bathroom, they discovered a singular roll of toilet paper ablaze. The fire department was summoned, yet their investigation yielded no tangible source for the fire. Firefighter David Lednicky, among the first responders, confirmed that no other part of the bathroom bore any damage—only the incinerated toilet paper roll remained. The absence of accelerants defied logic, leaving them with a borderline inexplicable conclusion: spontaneous combustion by an unknown force.

But the haunting did not relent. On Halloween night, October 31, 1975, terror struck anew. A back bedroom within the house erupted into flames, threatening not only the home but also the life of young Duane. As firefighters battled the inferno, Duane’s skin turned an eerie shade of blue, and his breath ceased. Amidst the chaos, the fire chief attempted to breach the attic, seeking any clue to the fire’s origin. Yet, with each effort, a mysterious force pushed back against the attic door, thwarting his entry.

666 – The Number of the Beast

The infamous number 666 has deep-rooted associations, primarily originating from the Holy Bible. In the Book of Revelation, it cryptically states: “Let the one with understanding reckon the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is 666.” This enigmatic figure, often referred to as The Beast, is linked to the Antichrist in various interpretations.

When the Book of Revelation gained prominence, those who adhered to Christian beliefs were genuinely terrified of any association with this unholy number. But the story doesn’t end there. In later years, the number 666 experienced a resurgence, thanks in part to the chilling horror film The Omen. During the momentous event known as The Last Supper, Christ sat around a table with these Twelve Apostles. He imparted to them formal instructions on how to continue His work should He meet an untimely end.

Among the thirteen individuals gathered at that table, including Christ Himself, only one betrayed Him: Judas Iscariot. The weight of guilt from his treachery led Judas to take his own life in a desolate field soon after.

Leonardo da Vinci, the renowned artist, immortalized this pivotal scene in his masterpiece, The Last Supper, based on biblical accounts. Scholars believe that the visual impact of this iconic painting, coupled with the association of Judas’s tragic fate, contributed to the ominous reputation of the number 13.

But there’s more: the superstition extends to Friday the 13th. Christ’s crucifixion supposedly occurred on a Friday, and the 13th individual at the table—vicariously linked to Judas—adds to the eerie connotations.

Such is the reach of this negative symbolism that, in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, buildings and hotels were often constructed without a 13th floor. And for those daring enough to have one, tales of supernatural occurrences often swirl around it.

4 – China’s 13

In China, the number 4 is meticulously avoided due to its auditory resemblance to the word for “death” in the Chinese language. Consequently, the Chinese take significant measures to minimize its use. While physically constructed buildings may indeed have a fourth floor, it is often omitted from building directories. Instead, the number 0 is sometimes used to denote the ground floor. So, when four floors are visible, the directory might indicate that the building has only three floors (including zero).

To counter the ominous association with the number 4, the Chinese consider the number 8 exceptionally lucky. Doubling 4 results in 8, and the visual similarity of 8 to the infinity symbol suggests an escape from any deadly fate.

This aversion to the phonetic sound of numbers extends beyond China to Japan as well. In Japan, the number 9 is frequently omitted from various contexts because its pronunciation coincides with the word for “torture”.

Here are five frighteningly famous horror film graveyards and where you can find them.

Real Movie Cemeteries

Night of the Living Dead

This is perhaps the horror film that started it all for the majority of fans. George Romero’s 1968 black and white classic opens with a pair of grieving siblings in Johnny and Barbara venturing out to visit their father’s grave. Minutes into the film, a deranged man kills Johnny and stalks Barbara all over the cemetery looking to make her his next victim. For those looking to retrace the steps of what some consider to be cinema’s first onscreen zombie chase, then the Evans City Cemetery in Evans City, Pennsylvania is the place to go. Romero chose the location because it was a cemetery that was built on a hilltop and that gave the filming crew a great deal of privacy when shooting the opening scenes. Fun Fact: While not a cemetery, the Monroeville Mall featured in Night of the Living Dead’s sequel, Dawn of the Dead, is a half-hour drive south of Evans City in Monroeville. Pet Sematary

No horror film graveyard list would be complete without one of the most famous known to both humans and animals alike, Pet Semetary. This grisly 1989 Stephen King cult film gave a whole new meaning in, “sometimes dead is better.” For this film, there are two separate graveyard locations that can be seen with the first being the famous Mi’kmaq burial ground. Just off Snow Cove Road in Sedgwick, Maine is the spot of the burial ground and while Hollywood magic helped to make this location eerie and over the top, today it looks rather plain but still the desolate feeling resonates nonetheless. The climb featured in the film was done in parts of Acadia National Park alongside Deer Brook Trail. For the graveyard where Gage Creed is initially buried, that’s the Mt. Hope Cemetery located in Bangor, Maine. Fans of the film will recall that this is where Stephen King cameos and played the clergyman officiating the funeral. Random Stephen King Trivia Fact: According to the novel, this is also the same cemetery where Georgie Denbrough is buried as well.

Phantasm

This is a horror film where not only graveyards, mortuaries, and caskets are crucial to the plot, they’re also in every scene! A young twenty-five-year-old filmmaker in 1979 named Don Coscarelli introduced audiences on what was to span nearly five decades in his cult film franchise, Phantasm. Set around a pair of teens who suspect that the local undertaker is running an otherworldly funeral home, they set off into a real-life dreamworld battle with evil incarnate in the form of a sinister entity named the Tall Man. Morningside Cemetery is the home-base for the Tall Man and for Phans (horror fan lingo for fans devoted to the film series) the place to visit is actually called the Dunsmuir Mansion Estate located in Oakland, California. The massive and sprawling estate and its stone gates were used as grounds for the Morningside Mortuary and Cemetery and today the estate is rented out private parties, and gatherings, thus making the inside mostly restricted to the general public. Phun Phact: A portion of the headstones used and the giant casket the Tall Man carries with ease were actually all made of styrofoam.

The Omen

Here is one for all you European horror fans and world travelers. In 1976, director Richard Donner burst into the horror movie world with a film that had its core character taken directly from the Bible itself. The Omen was the story of a young boy named Damien who is adopted by a wealthy U.S. ambassador and his wife who find out that the father for the youngster wasn’t some transient, but Satan himself. A key scene midway through the film finds the ambassador in a graveyard searching for answers only to discover it’s guarded by bloodthirsty hellhounds. To capture this isolated and unnerving cemetery, Donner took to filming just outside of Rome, Italy a mile north of the town of Cerveteri. Known locally as the Tomba Dei Letti Funebri (which translates into Tomb of the Funeral Beds), this stone bed necropolis gets completely terrifying after sunset. Omen Fact: The film’s composer Jerry Goldsmith won the Academy Award for Best Original Score which he titled “Ave Satani”.

Friday the 13th Part 6

Any fan of the Friday the 13th franchise knows that Jason Voorhees is almost never truly killed and hardly buried. Fresh off being buried somewhere between the end of Friday the 13th Part 5 and Part 6, the film opens with franchise hero Tommy Jarvis suffering from nightmares about Jason coming back to life. To remedy this he and a pal go to a local graveyard to dig up Jason and make sure his body is further destroyed. Unfortunately, a bolt of lightning has other plans and Jason is brought back to life to continue his bloody killing spree at Camp Crystal Lake. For this scene, the Old Madison Cemetery in Madison, Georgia is the actual site of this series franchise favorite. Positioned right by the railroad tracks, the cemetery still stands today and is quite active in regards to visitors coming and trying to find the iconic Voorhees plot. Friday Fact: This is the only film in the entire Friday the 13th series that features no nudity whatsoever.

Eli Roth’s latest movie, Thanksgiving, is a slasher film that takes place over the, you guessed it, Thanksgiving holiday. The plot revolves around a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer who terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts, the birthplace of the infamous holiday. The movie is expected to be a bloody affair, with Roth’s trademark dark humor being a part of many of the film’s big kills.

The trailer for Thanksgiving is a feast of holiday-themed horror. It opens with a shot of a turkey being carved, but things quickly take a turn for the worse as the carving knife is used to commit a gruesome murder. The trailer then introduces us to John Carver, a serial killer Pilgrim who is on the loose in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Carver is shown assaulting a string of victims with implements more generally utilized to serve dinner than deliver torture and death. Corn forks to the ears, meat tenderizer to the head, that kind of thing. The trailer shows scenes of violence, gore, and terror, as well as some of the main cast members, such as Patrick Dempsey and Addison Rae.
