The MAiZE at The Pumpkin Patch is a popular outdoor adventure. We are Portland’s original corn maze, in business since 1999. Our labyrinth of twists, turns and dead ends, carved into stalks over your head, offers an experience that is perfect for those hungry for fun. Most participants, adults and children alike, spend an average of one hour trying to maneuver their way out of our mind-boggling puzzle.

It has been said that the mythology of the Hallowed Haunting Grounds is as mysterious as its very ambiance. Indeed, the shadowy statue of an angel that one first encounters upon arriving at the graveyard can be viewed as both consoling and disconcerting. Some say they can hear her humming softly to the baby she holds as she keeps watch over the graveyard.

For thirty-three years, during the Halloween season, there appeared at a home in Studio City, California a display of mysterious illusions. It was known as the Hallowed Haunting Grounds. Hundreds of very appreciated visitors made seeing the display a part of their annual traditions.

It is very sad that all things must pass, and this Halloween display was no exception. With extreme gratitude to neighbors for their patience, friends for their support, and families for their understanding, the hosts of the show moved on to other endeavors.

A Tale of Halloween

How does one become obsessed enough with Halloween to dedicate months of time, hundreds of dollars and the better part of their home to the transformation? It all started with our family and friends. We love Halloween. They love Halloween. We’ve always wanted to create an elaborate yard display … so have they. And faster than you can say “trick or treat” the plan is hatched. Next thing you know, they’re spending every available minute at your house, transforming the garage, driveway, front yard and house into a realistic graveyard. From this initial haunt, the 1031 Club was born.

When we purchased the house we live in today. From the moment we laid eyes on the yard, we knew its destiny was that of the ultimate Halloween cemetery. It took several years to bring the dead and dying to life, but the dream has become a reality. For over 10 years, we have created a creepy crawly yard haunt that has attracted people from all over the Portland area.

It has become a spectacle of spectres that we are all quite proud of. But none of this would have happened had it not been for our good friends and family members who started us down this path, as well as the inspiration from fellow yard haunters throughout the country. From our family of freaks, fiends and the gratefully undead to yours, happy haunting.

The History of the Haunted Maribel Caves Hotel

Now reminiscent of Western European Medieval castle ruins, the Maribel Caves Hotel originally began as a therapeutic hotel/spa where the “tired and worn” could be “invigorated.” Thanks to its unique location, both in close proximity to a natural spring and the railroad that passed through Maribel, the hotel became a popular rest stop for many traveling Americans throughout the early 1900’s. In fact, notorious gangsters and bootleggers such as John Dillinger and Al Capone are said to have been included among the guest list. As the Maribel Caves Hotel also functioned as a spring water bottling plant with carbonizing equipment, one can imagine why they might have fixated on the particular location.

Still, contrary to its reputation, the hotel and bottling plant began to “go under” around 1915 and was eventually purchased by Adolph Cherney, owner and operator of a local construction company, in 1931. He and his family resided here until his death, which was preceded by the death of his young daughter, Norma, who expired under mysterious circumstances.

Hotel Hell Opens For Business

Under a new owner, Jeff Miller, the building reopened as a hotel again in 1981. Miller saw little success, however, as the hotel had adopted a reputation of being haunted by angry spirits by that time. Then, in 1985—with no known cause—the building was engulfed in a fire large enough to reduce the building to its limestone bones.

In the years that followed, the dilapidated fortress earned a third name, “Hotel Hell.” Since it was gutted and abandoned, bone-chilling rumors have constantly surrounded the place. Many claim to have seen the figure of a man that continually looms in various windows around the building, always facing out. Additionally, visitors have experienced feeling cold hands pressed on their back when they walk around the ruins alone. Some have heard voices and shrieks coming from the basement and caves below. Others have sworn that stones and other objects move on their own accord.

Hotel Hell Pt. II?

Maribel Caves Hotel as it stands today. People say it’s more haunted than ever.

Today, the property is declared structurally unsafe due to being nearly leveled by a tornado. Still, the rumors of paranormal activity persist.

Most recently, the newest owner—who has long tried to put rumors of its haunting to bed—has voiced plans to rebuild the hotel to its former glory. If there is validity to the many ghost stories, only time will tell.

The most well known of the ghosts at the Omni Homestead Resort is a bride from the early 20th-century who took her life when her fiance disappeared on their wedding day.

She is seen walking through the hallways on the 14th floor stopping guests to ask them what time it is. Apparently, she’s hoping that her fiance will return to the hotel, and she’ll finally have her happy ending.

If you stay at the resort, you may just encounter this sad spirit.

Minnesota’s Haunted St. James Hotel

It’s not often that a hotel embraces its haunted past. Many hotels will rebuke the lore of ghost sightings and paranormal activity. Red Wing, Minnesota’s St. James Hotel embraces it. Ask for the haunted rooms and they’ll direct you to the 3rd floor. Room 310 is Clara’s room, the ghost of Clara Lillyblad who owned the hotel from 1932 to 1972.

The hotel was erected in 1875 during Red Wing’s wheat-trading boom and was one of the most modern hotels of its time. Sitting blocks from the steamboat docks and train depot, the hotel was a hub for business owners and travelers alike. Several of those guests appear to have stuck around a bit.

Haunted Hotel Rooms & Floors

• 3rd floor is where most of the hotel’s ghost sightings have taken place.
• Room 310 is Clara’s room.
• The basement is said to be haunted and some have reported seeing faces staring back at guests.
• All floors may be haunted by the ghost of a worker who fell to his death during the building of the hotel. He also has been seen on the grand staircase of the Saint James in his overalls.
• All floors have seen an spirit that slams doors, cold spots, whispering voices, and the cries of children at many times during the hotel’s history
