Haunted, not hellish

If your idea of a haunted house is having to take a Valium to keep your heart from bursting through your chest, then this is NOT the haunted house for you.

Chad Heck created Heck’s Haunted House in 2014 as an alternative to the ultra frightening Halloween attractions that were not suitable for younger children. Why? Because Halloween is still about the kids. “It’s called a haunted house because it’s a kid friendly haunt,” Heck said. “It was made for the community kids who enjoy Halloween [to] have a safe environment to get candy and food and more.”

The House itself is a replica of the personified dwelling featured in the 2006 kids movie “Monster House.” They even kicked off the month-long event with a showing of the film. It played on October 1st and was included in the price of admission.

Heck's Monster House Kid Friendly Haunt

Located at 1637 Tremont Ave SW in Massillon, Ohio, Heck’s Haunted House features a trek through the Monster House, a concession stand with pizza, soda, and cider, as well as an Enchanted Forest, the theme of which is Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Cost is $2 and two non-perishable food items per person.

Giving Back

The best part about Heck’s Haunted House? The kid-friendly attraction doubles as a charity event supporting local veterans and their families. Food and cash donations go to the SAM center for VETS and The Stark County Hunger Task Force.

“It’s a charity event we do the whole month of October for families in need of food.” Heck said. “We average 500-1000 [guests] a night and raised 10,000 lbs of food last year.”

The SAM Center was founded in March 2015 and works with other community programs to provide support to veterans and their families. The mission of the SAM Center is “Honoring all those who are serving and have served, and their partners in life. It is the mission of the SAM Center to honor their sacrifice, and through the communities’ love, provide support and hope.” In addition to providing food items, the SAM Center provides gas cards, lodging kits, hand-made quilts, and even emotional support to these former service-members.

Construction of the Monster House

The Monster House is constructed and torn down each year. Construction of the House begins in late July and relies on monetary and material donations from Massillon community members. Heck and his family started a GoFundMe page which has raised over $1,400 to support this haunted happening.

Heck also relies on community support through volunteers. He posted on Heck’s Haunted House’s Facebook page, that they are “always in need of volunteers.” Community members have pitched in to help with construction and decoration, as well as by donating candy and other needed supplies. Even the local Girl Scouts have helped out.

Acclaim

In only 3 short years, Heck’s Haunted House has become known as one of the best haunts for kids in the United States. “This is an amazing, and fun place for people of all ages!” Melissa said. One person commented, “Our family went last year and really loved it. It’s for a wonderful cause and they do a great job on the ‘house.’” As the acclaim grows the haunt does too. Heck mentioned that he plans to move the haunt to a permanent building in the future, where he can spend less time setting up and tearing down each year and spend more time on new and fun things for the kids and community to experience.

Heck's Haunted House in Massillon Ohio

hecks-haunted-attraction-ohio

A Football Town

The town of Massillon, Ohio is well-known for its high school football team, the Massillon Tigers. Only one high school in the United States has won more games than the Tigers. The football program was launched in 1894, and in 1916 was honored with the title of Scholastic Champions of Ohio. In fact, so tenacious is the football culture in Massillon, the local booster club brings along an actual tiger cub named Obie to all of their home games!

Trick or Treat

Heck’s Haunted House runs from October 1st through the 31st from 7 pm to 11 pm, (7 pm to 9 pm on Sunday). They will be handing out candy nightly to the kids, so lucky Trick-or-Treaters can stock up early. Heck urges anyone who enjoys the frightful holiday to “Join us for a monsterly good time with all the kids.”

Address

  • Haunted Chicago is loaded with history. It’s also home to some great haunted establishments. From churches and theaters to restaurants and hotels, this city is rich in paranormal activity going back to the Chicago fire of 1871 and beyond. So we couldn’t think of a better city to visit to try to catch some glimpses of ghosts. Besides, we love us some deep dish!

    The Haunted Congress Plaza Hotel

     The Haunted Congress Plaza Hotel

    Who is haunting the Congress?

    • The haunted Congress Plaza Hotel was built in 1893, 22 years after the Chicago fire killed 300 people and destroyed more than 3 square miles of the city. The fire wasn’t the only life-taking force in the city back then. America’s first serial killer, Dr. H.H. Holmes, would meet young women in the lobby of the hotel, only to murder them a few blocks away at his “Murder Castle.”
    • Legendary mob boss Al Capone is falsely rumored to have owned a suite on the 8th floor of the North Tower. Capone was not there, but his henchmen were and they followed out Capone’s dastardly orders. You can’t rule out Capone having made an appearance in the Congress though, as many people have witnessed a fat man wearing an old style suit roaming the halls.  Capone ghost hunters might try the haunted Arlington Resort.Haunted Congress Plaza Hotel 12 Floor
    • The 12th floor is known to be haunted by the “Little Boy.” In the late 1930s, 6-year-old Karel Langer was thrown out the window by his mother who was worried about being deported back to Nazi Germany. Karel is known to follow people down the hallway to their room. As a result, many of the hotel employees refuse to work on this floor by themselves.
    • In 1900, a Spanish American War Captain, Lou Astheim, shot himself in his room after waking to a horrible nightmare. People often report a shadowy figure lurking around the halls. A security guard even reported chasing him up to the roof where he vanished.
    • Several employees have seen a ghost hopping around the hotel on a peg leg. Some call him Peg Leg Johnny. Others believe it is Conway, the One-Legged Killer Clown who was arrested for murder just a few blocks away in 1912. Thirteen years later, he escaped from prison and was never seen again. Well, except at the Congress.
    • The Florentine Room is a popular space for brides and grooms to dance the night away. But there are plenty of others who enjoy staying up late and making a ruckus. Guests who visit the room alone have reported hearing a female voice whisper in their ear. Others have seen chairs and tables moving by themselves. Maybe somebody doesn’t want the party to end?

Visit haunted Congress Hotel for a scary stay

This is one spooky hotel. When walking the halls at night, you get the distinct feeling you are not alone. It may just be the old vintage feel of the place, or it could just be the ghosts.

As soon as you walk into the lobby, the history of this grand hotel makes itself known. You can almost see presidents Grover Cleveland, William McKinley, Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Franklin Roosevelt congregating there.

    Haunted Congress Hotel Lobby

The Congress wins the award for coolest looking elevators. We would give it even more points if there was an attendant.

    Congress Hotel Old Elevators

Once in our room, we couldn’t help but stop our ghost hunting for a moment and just enjoy our view of the lake.

    Congress Hotel Room View

Overall, the Congress is a great hotel. It’s beautiful, in a great location, has a great staff, and is full of amazing Chicago history. Ghost hunting or not, you can’t lose when staying at the Congress Plaza Hotel.

    The Drake Hotel

    The Haunted Drake Hotel

    Who is haunting the Drake?

    • Opened on New Year’s Eve 1920, the haunted Drake Hotel started off with a bang. Ghost stories have been floating around since day one.
    • The 10th floor is where the “Woman in Red” lays her tired head. On New Year’s Eve, 1920, this poor soul caught her husband with another lady and proceeded to jump out of a 10th floor window. Some guests have seen her near 10th floor windows reenacting her The Drake Hotel's 10th Floordemise. Some believe that this red dressed belle is actually Mrs. Adel Born Williams, a lady of high society who was murdered in the hotel in 1944. Her murderer was never brought to justice.
    • The famous child-murdering duo, Leopold and Loeb, were interrogated at the Drake before heading off to the slammer. Although they did not die here, their victim’s father did, many years later.

None of the following died in the hotel, but all were patrons of this historic Chicago landmark. Guests have included everyone from heads of state to movie stars. The following list is long and not even close to complete:

    • Walt Disney
    • Winston Churchill
    • Princess Diana
    • Elizabeth Taylor
    • Joe DiMaggio
    • Frank Sinatra
    • Ronald Reagan
    • Dean Martin
    • Herbert Hoover

    FrightFind Visits The Drake

The Drake must be one of the most beautiful haunted hotels in the country, if not the world. We spoke to a couple of employees who have been there for several decades who said that they have seen the Woman in Red, but it had been many years. One very friendly security guard told us, “The day I see a ghost is the day I give my notice.” Scared much?

    The Haunted Drake Hotel Lobby

We stayed on the 10th floor where all the action is reported to be. I don’t know what it is about old hotels that makes them so creepy, but walking down the hallway at night isn’t the most comforting experience. I know that lady in red was watching me.

The Haunted Drake Hotel 10th Floor

Even though the Woman in Red didn’t make an appearance, the Drake is now one of my favorite hotels. You can’t beat the location and the staff was more than happy to give us their opinion on the ghosts, which makes staying here for a spooky experience all the more fun.
