The Omni Shoreham Hotel witnessed a number of celebrity guests over the years, including Franklin Delano Roosevelt and all four members of The Beatles. Constructed in 1930 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel is also home to a room so haunted that it now goes by the name of the Ghost Suite.

Also known as Suite 870, this was originally an apartment that one of the hotel’s partners lived in with his family. Not long after Henry L. Doherty and his family moved in, they experienced a run of bad luck. The family’s maid abruptly died months after they arrived, and their only daughter died as well. After the family left, the hotel decided not to use the room for several decades.

Hoping to make more space, later owners renovated the apartment and created a new hotel room. Almost immediately after the first guest checked in, the room developed a haunted reputation. Guests would wake to find the television set turned on and the noise turned up. Others reported seeing the door open and close on its own and finding their belongings rifled through or moved when no one else was in the room. Guests staying in neighboring rooms often complained about the loud noises and parties taking place in the room, which was empty for the night. Sightings of a young woman in an old-fashioned dress led some to believe that the ghost of the Omni Shoreham Hotel is that of Doherty’s daughter or former maid.

Is the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel Haunted?

Anyone who wants to stay in a haunted hotel with a touch of history and class may want to try the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. When the hotel opened its doors in 1925, it was called the Grande Dame of Washington. It had almost as much gold in its decor as the Library of Congress. Many U. S. Presidents have called the Mayflower home. Harry Truman stayed in the hotel during his first 90 days of presidency.

The haunting that most people talk about at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel is the incident that happens January 20th each year. Calvin Coolidge was due to hold his inaugural ball at the hotel when his son died due to blood poisoning from an infection. The president, mourning the loss of his son, didn’t attend his inaugural ball.

Traditionally, at 10:00 p. m., honored guests are announced during the ball. At 10:15 p. m., the president is announced. Each year at the Mayflower, the lights in the ballroom flicker then dim. The elevator stops running at 10:00 on the upper floors. When the time hits exactly 10:15 p. m., the elevator descends to the bottom floor. This occurs as it would have had Coolidge attended his inaugural ball. Some years, hors d’oeuvres and wine can be found on the balcony.

The Addy Sea Haunted Inn

The Addy Sea Inn in Bethany Beach, DE is a charming Victorian-style bed and breakfast that was built by the Addy family in 1902. The Addy Sea Inn is reportedly one of the most haunted establishments in the entire state of Delaware. Perhaps the paranormal event that it’s most known for is that of a copper bathtub that vibrates. According to guests, the copper bathtub shakes violently and many have reported experiencing the phenomena first-hand. This mysteriously shaking tub is located in Room 1 of the inn.

Other reported hauntings in the Addy Sea Inn include eerie organ music heard emanating from Room 6 yet there is no organ. An apparition is said to run through the hallways at nights. As this ghost runs throughout the space, smells of perfume and sounds of mysterious music fill the area. Although there are no connections made behind the occurrences.

The ghosts of two people supposedly haunt the The Addy Sea Inn. Room 11 is reportedly haunted by a former handyman named Paul Dulaney. He was employed by the Addys years ago. Although he died on a construction site rather than at the inn, Paul Dulaney’s spirit is believed to frequent his old room 11 on the 3rd floor of the establishment. He makes his ghostly presence known by sitting on the bed or standing by it.

The spirit of Kurty Addy is believed to frequent the roof where guests hear sounds of his footsteps. Kurty Addy died after falling off the roof of the inn, and guests say that he walks the roof restlessly at night.

The Loews Don CeSar hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida is sometimes called the Pink Palace, but it is also known as the most haunted hotel in the Tampa Bay area. Stories say that the broken-hearted man who originally built the hotel, Thomas Rowe, has never left the premises although he died in 1940. In fact, some have even seen him wandering the gardens with the dark-haired beauty Lucinda, the Spanish opera singer Rowe loved and lost in Europe. Others report being greeted in the lobby by a smiling man in a Panama hat only to have the figure fade into nothingness. Rowe’s ghost has also been spotted on the fifth floor where he once lived.

Rowe and Lucinda fell in love when he was a student in London, but due to religious differences, Lucinda’s parents whisked her back home to Spain to put an end to the relationship. Every letter he wrote her was returned to him unopened by her parents. The only message from her he ever received was accompanied by the news of her untimely death. It was said that Lucinda had died of a broken heart, but she was able to send him a final message promising that she would wait for him forever.

A broken man himself, Rowe went to America and married a woman in Virginia, but he did not love her. Eventually, he moved to Florida alone and built the Don CeSar.

The hotel itself is a stunning piece of architecture, a striking pink fairy-tale confection, and it may have been in memory of the lost Lucinda’s homeland and career that Rowe chose the influence of Mediterranean and Moorish architecture and named the hotel after a Spanish character in the opera “Maritana.” As part of the hotel’s original design, Rowe also included a replica of the fountain at which he and Lucinda were supposed to meet for their elopement. In the hotel’s heyday, it hosted the famous and infamous including F. Scott Fitzgerald, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Al Capone.

Thomas Rowe and his beloved Lucinda are not the only ghosts who haunt the hotel. Rowe died before making arrangements to leave the hotel to his staff as he intended, so it passed to his estranged wife who had little interest in its operations. The hotel failed and became a VA hospital from the 1940s until 1973 when it was turned back into a hotel. Sadly, the fountain had already been destroyed.

However, by the time the hotel reopened to guests, it had acquired some additional specters. The second and sixth floors are also said to be haunted, and some guests report seeing a nurse wandering the halls. She is also sometimes seen near the kitchens that were formerly a hospital morgue. Guests also say they have the unsettling feeling of being watched or that someone has come into the room with them. Lights blink on and off without explanation, and people open doors to repeated knocking to find no one on the other side – or no one who is alive.

Guests have also reported sightings of various other apparitions as well as irregular behavior from the elevator. One woman says she woke in the night to see a man standing at the foot of her bed. At the time, she thought someone had mistakenly wandered into her room, and the man went away. Only later did she learn that the hotel was haunted and realize that her late-night visitor had been a dead man.

However, of all the ghosts that haunt the Loews Don CeSar Hotel, it is the lovers Thomas Rowe and Lucinda that the hotel belongs to. Though cruelly separated in life, they will walk the halls of the Pink Palace together for eternity.
