Guests of the Oceanfront are encouraged to share their experiences in a journal near the front desk. Many of the hauntings occur in the older cabins on the ridge. Some of the unexplained happenings were rearranged furniture in the rooms, televisions that turn off and on and whispers in the middle of the night. One guest reported knocking on the door while the television flicker on and off that kept him up at 3 a. m.

At the resort, the ghost is thought to be one upset governess for the former owner. Mrs. Beanning’s ashes were in an urn on the mantle for years. The new owners thought she’d be better off in the family crypt. Since then, the spirit has shown her displeasure. She turns lights off and on, plays with the blenders as well as fans in the resort. She’ll reignite candles that someone has blown out too. While harmless, she is definitely not pleased with her new location.

The Haunted Davenport Hotel in Spokane, Wa

In 1920, a young woman named Ellen McNamara fell through a skylight and plunged to her death. She’s often seen peering over the railing towards the mezzanine below. There are other ghostly happenings that can’t be pinned to one ghost. A hotel worker reported that he saw a heavy, glass-and-metal terrace door fly open on a night that wasn’t windy. He didn’t return to that area for a week. Many workers claim to feel a presence around them constantly. There have been numerous sightings of apparitions in the hotel too.

The Haunted Tokeland Hotel

Just off the oyster-consumed Willapa Bay stands the large and luxurious Tokeland Hotel. The estate was built by Elizabeth and William Kindred in 1885 and was opened as The Kindred Inn in 1889, making it the oldest resort in Washington state. The inn is settled close to the Pacific Ocean, making it quite cozy and relaxing for a guest to stay. The staff is friendly and the rooms are clean. The age of the hotel makes it a likely location for a haunting one might say. But almost every guest that has stepped through the doorway has a tale or two about their time there.

Ghosts of the Tokeland Hotel

Charly is the name most likely to come up when asking a guest about their ghostly Tokeland stay. Young Charly’s appearances seem to be quite friendly, nothing more than just mischievous fun. Back in the 1930s, the Tokeland Hotel regularly used a small hidden space behind the fireplace to smuggle Chinese immigrants into Washington. It is likely Charly suffocated in this cramped space. Disturbances such as hovering and wildly spinning plates in the dining room have been attributed to Charly. Although an appearance is rare, some have claimed to have seen his friendly spirit walking throughout the halls and grounds. Another reported spirit said to haunt the estate is a wildcat. It can be seen lurking around the outside of the hotel at night. Hotel owner Katherine White says she does not fear Charly or any other spirits, they just want to have a bit of fun.

The Tokeland Hotel early 1910s

Through the years, Katherine has experienced numerous unusual occurrences in the Tokeland Hotel. She recalls seeing a strange apparition resembling a cumulus cloud hanging in the air. It floated for a few minutes then disappeared without a trace. In another instance, Katherine was locked in an upstairs room for a time. The door swung shut behind her and was locked from the outside; she could see through the crack at the edge of the door where the latch had been thrown. As she fumbled for the light, she found it was not working. After a couple of minutes of groping in the dark, she heard the sound of the latch being unlocked and she was able to leave the small room. She assumes it was Charly, up to no good.

One guest reported that when she was four, she saw a ghostly apparition in the hotel. Years later, she returned and had a terrible feeling of unease when she’d seen the ghost all those years ago. However, no guest has reported any sort of attack so fans of mild ghost encounters will find the Tokeland Hotel an interesting and beautiful stay.

Haunted Rooms of the Tokeland Hotel

• Rooms #7 and #4 are the most haunted in the hotel. They are even called “haunted room #7” and “haunted room #4.”
• The sounds of scraping coat hangers and footsteps can be heard throughout the night on the third floor, a floor only used for storage, never guests. Lights have been known to flicker or go out completely on this floor as well.
• The restaurant has seen some creepy disturbances. Plates have reportedly flown into the air or across the room.

Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin lies at the foot of Lake Winnebago in the northeastern area of the state of Wisconsin. Founded in 1852, the area is a prime piece of vacation area for visitors to go and enjoy Lake Winnebago. However one of the oldest storied hotels in Fond Du Lac is also the most haunted, and that’s the Retlaw Plaza.

Is the Retlaw Plaza Hotel Haunted?

Constructed in 1878, the eight-story Retlaw was originally a product of the Schroeder Hotel Company and it was made with all the most expensive and lavish furnishings at the time by Walter Schroeder himself. Throughout the many decades, the Retlaw was sold and resold, changing many names in the lengthy process including the more modern hotel brands of Clarion and Ramada. Despite all the changes, the Retlaw never lots its draw and in 1984 actually became listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But despite all of the accomplishments and longevity, there has been documented paranormal activity cited here.

Retlaw’s Haunted Room 717

The most haunted room in the entire building is #717. Loud banging sounds on the door of the room, drastically cold temperatures, the door mysteriously closes and locks, lights going on and off, scratching sounds, minor assaults to guests, and cries for help from the voice of an unseen woman. Only rarely has a spirit been seen in the room, and she is described as pale with red hair and a sad expression to her face. One of the most prevailing theories is that a younger woman had committed suicide by jumping out of the window from room #717. Another similar story, has her being murdered by an unknown aggressor. Either scenario is deeply troubling as it is paranormally clear that her spirit has not left the room area.

Retlaw’s Haunted Ballroom

Another paranormal hotspot within the Retlaw is the ballroom. The curved ballroom is lavish with a singular chandelier that hangs overhead. This same chandelier also has been seen swaying by an unseen force by hotel staff. Along with this, an unusually high number of glowing orbs has been seen floating throughout the ballroom at different hours. Recently, a paranormal group conducted an investigation of the haunted claims of the Retlaw Plaza.

During a particular EVP (electronic voice phenomena) session conducted in the ballroom, the name of “Walter” kept being repeated by an unseen spirit. Is this spirit that of Walter Schroeder, the same man who originally built the Retlaw? The only conclusion that could be drawn is that he was particularly fond of this hotel when he was alive and appears just as dedicated about its presence all these decades later. Today the Retlaw is undergoing extensive remodeling to better serve all the guests looking to enjoy Fond Du Lac and nearby Lake Winnebago.
