Horror

2026 is quite the year for Friday the 13th. This year, we have 3 extremely unlucky days to choose from (sidenote: if you want to know when the next Friday the 13th is, check out our calendar). To honor this special/terrifying year, we have compiled a list of the 13 scariest IRL events that have happened on Friday the 13th in years past.

1. Double Whammy

On October 13th, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, chartered by an amateur rugby team, was on its way to Santiago, Chile, when it crashed into the Andes mountains in Argentina. Of the 45 passengers aboard, only 16 survived. For two months, the wreckage was nowhere to be found. When the survivors were finally located, it was discovered that the remaining people had resorted to cannibalism to survive.

On this same day, a second tragedy struck. Aeroflot Flight 217, a flight from Paris to Moscow, crashed when the plane failed to level off horizontally during landing. This caused speculation that the crew was somehow incapacitated or had lost control of the plane, although the official cause of the crash has not been discovered to this day. In total, all 164 passengers and 10 crew members were killed. At the time, this was the deadliest plane crash to have ever happened.

I think what we can determine from these two calamities is not to board a flight on Friday the 13th. Nothing good ever seems to happen.

2. Don’t Ice Us Out

Another October Friday the 13th, possibly the unluckiest 13th you could have. On October 13th, 2006, a whopping 2 feet of snow had blanketed Buffalo, New York. This immense snowfall caused many problems for residents of the Buffalo area, including but not limited to: roads being impassable, 13 people dying (one of those people being crushed by a tree), 400,000 people left without power, and more. This day had a heavy impact on the city of Buffalo, leaving devastating effects on the environment and city infrastructure.

3. Sorry, Daz

Daz Baxter was a superstitious guy who preferred to stay home in bed on Friday the 13th. Well, on August 13th, 1976, Daz was at home, getting ready to do exactly that, when he heard an alarming creak. Then, the unthinkable happened – the entire apartment complex collapsed. Baxter, who had spent his entire life trying to avoid the curse of the 13th, fell 6 stories to his death. He couldn’t even stay safe in his own home. If only he had a Friday the 13th survival kit on hand…

4. Hasta Luego, Concordia or Abandon Ship

The Costa Concorida was a one-of-a-kind Italian cruise ship, weighing 114,137 tons. This mighty ship was one of the biggest built in Italy in its time, until its demise. On January 13, 2012, the Costa Concordia hit a rock in the Tyrrhenian Sea, just off the shore of the Isola del Giglio, causing a massive tear in the hull. Subsequently, the ship began flooding, causing panic amongst its passengers. The evacuation took 6 hours, and 32 people were deceased. The ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

5. Long Live the Queen

Even the royal family is not safe from the unlucky #13. On September 13, 1940, Queen Elizabeth and King George VI were enjoying a royal breakfast when the famous Buckingham Palace was bombed. At the time, Nazi Germany was in full force and targeting the British Monarch. In total, five bombs were dropped, injuring four people and killing one more. However, the Queen and King were both unharmed.

6. Rest in Peace, Kitty

Catherine “Kitty” Genovese was a 28-year-old bartender living in New York City. On March 13, 1964, Kitty was outside her apartment when she was brutally attacked and stabbed to death. According to The New York Times, over 37 people heard Kitty’s cries and screams, but no one stepped in to help. This led to what we now call the “bystander effect,” or sometimes also known as “Genovese syndrome.” The man who murdered Kitty,  29-year-old Winston Moseley, was arrested for an unrelated burglary, and later confessed to his crime in jail. He was sentenced to death, but later died in prison at the age of 81. He served a 52-year-long sentence.

7. No More California Love

Famous rapper and political activist Tupac Shakur was riding in a Black BMW with his friend, Suge Knight, when he was shot four times. The incident occurred on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nevada, after Tupac attended a wrestling match. Apparently, while leaving the match, Tupac got into a fight with Orlando Anderson, a member of the South Side Compton Crips gang. It’s suspected that the shooter was also a member of the gang, although a killer has never been officially determined. Tupac died on September 13, 1996, at the age of 25, shocking the world.

8. Mask Up

March 13, 2020, is an infamous date in United States history. It was the day that a national emergency was declared due to the coronavirus. This mandated lockdown was in place for over a year, depriving everyone of their sense of normalcy and routine.

9. Don’t Try to Ride This Cyclone

The 1970 Bhola Cyclone is known for being the deadliest tropical cyclone in history. It killed over 500,000 people in Bangladesh and caused immense damage. It affected over 3.6 million people, and the damage cost over 86.4 million US dollars at the time (now estimated to be 701 million). Thousands of homes were destroyed, and most people relied on food aid for months after the storm.

10. Look Out, Below!

American daredevil Sam Patch was known for jumping from great heights. Well, what was his passion ended up killing him. On November 13, 1829, Patch jumped into the Genesee River, but never resurfaced. Onlookers suspected that Patch had hidden in a nearby cave to stir up excitement, but his frozen remains were discovered a year later. Although an official cause of death is unknown, it is most likely that he died from blunt force trauma and/or drowning. Maybe stay on the ground next time, Sam?

11. Burned Alive

On October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered his officers to arrest hundreds of the Knights Templar, which was a powerful military order formed to defend the Holy Land. The Templars were tortured and interrogated, and the King later had these convicts executed by burning at the stake. It’s suspected he killed them for financial gain.

12. A Black Friday

Victoria, Australia, suffered greatly after a massive wildfire clouded the city. In total, 71 people died, and thousands lost their homes. Over 4,900,000 acres were destroyed. The event occurred on January 13, 1939, and has been nicknamed “Black Friday.” This was recorded as the 3rd deadliest fire in Australian history, right behind the 1983 Ash Wednesday Bushfires and the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires.

13. A Day of Despair

The worst day of all. On December 13, 1974, our FrightFind partner/cofounder Joel Caudill was born. This is known as the darkest day in history, filled with anguish and despair. If you see him on the street, turn around and run. He might get you.

You know what they always say – be careful what you wish for.

In the newest and hottest horror movie, Obsession, Bear (Michael Johnston) uses a “one wish willow” to get his crush, Nikki (Inde Navarrette), to like him back. However, his dream slowly turns into a nightmare as Nikki becomes disturbingly obsessed with him.

The Twisted Mind Behind Obsession

Who is behind everyone’s latest horror obsession? American actor, director, and comedian Curry Barker is the film’s director. Barker began creating films and sketch comedies on YouTube alongside Cooper Tomlinson. They are known for their YouTube channel titled “that’s a bad idea”, which currently has 1.13 million subscribers.

Before becoming a director, Barker made some TV acting appearances in “Dave” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”. Barker made his directorial debut in 2024 with his found-footage film, Milk & Serial. This thriller went viral on YouTube, which led to Barker being noticed by United Talent Agency. He then directed Obsession in 2025, originally screened at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Only a few days later, Focus Features bought the film’s distribution rights, and the rest is history.

Barker is a phenomenal director, and we can’t wait to see his next project.

The Obsession Cast

This cast delivers a groundbreaking performance and will surely have you wishing you had never bought your movie ticket.

It’s your favorite cursed day again… Friday the 13th has returned. And if you’re reading this, it’s probably already too late for you. But hey, let’s go over the rules anyway—just in case you want to survive until Saturday.

Things You Probably Shouldn’t Do On Friday The 13th

  1. Let’s get this one out of the way. Black cat crosses your path? No! Or any cat, for that matter. You should know this.
  2. Feel like a camping trip? Just go to the mall instead.
  3. I know the weather is warming up, and that rowboat on the foggy lake looks enticing. Don’t do it!
  4. Don’t be a camp counselor. If so, think more Meatballs and less Camp Crystal Lake.
  5. Stay together. Your girlfriend will split up with you after the summer, but for tonight, you are a team.
  6. Never say, “It’s fine, I’m just going to take a look around.” Prepare to meet your maker.
  7. Sex isn’t a good idea. You can wait.
  8. Drinking and getting high are a huge no-no. Unless you have given up. In that case, smoke them if you got them.
  9. Don’t run. The axe-wielding sociopath walks, but somehow gets wherever you are going first. Physics? Nope—Friday the 13th logic.
  10. Respect everyone in a mask. Everyone!
  11. Don’t be a jock. That letterman’s jacket is basically a bullseye.
  12. You hear something in the woods? Leave it there.
  13. Falling asleep may sound like a good idea, but it will end with you not waking up.
  14. Creepy local guy warning you about going into that house? You can trust him today and only today.

Friday the 13th Rules Recap

Cats are spawned from hell. Camping is bad. Most bodies of water are lethal. You are too old for sleepaway camp anyway. Groups are your friend. Looking around will find nothing you want. Just say no to sex and drugs, today anyway. Running will kill you. Hold people with masks in high regard.  Your athleticism is not to be advertised. Sleeping is your enemy tonight. The creepy neighborhood guy isn’t lying to you.

Just when you thought you saw the last of Ed and Lorraine Warren, the studio pulls you back in again with a new Conjuring prequelWith Last Rites smashing global box office records, pulling in $194 million worldwide in its opening weekend and grossing over $480 million worldwide, it is now one of the most successful horror films ever made. I guess they know we want more now?

The Conjuring Lives On: A Look Before The Warrens

While Last Rites was the Warrens’ “final chapter”, the prequel will focus on the real-life paranormal investigator’s early years. Word on the street is that the film will feature new actors, replacing Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who have played the Warrens since 2013’s The Conjuring premiere.  Both actors have hinted that their Conjuring journey has ended, with Farmiga saying, “Far as we know, there’s nothing else that they want from us.

Now the question is, who will be replacing them? We have some of our own ideas, but we will all have to be patient and wait. Check back for updates.

The Team Behind the Terror

The prequel is set to be directed by Rodrigue Huart, with the script written by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, the duo behind The Nun 2 and Last Rites.  With their proven track record of blending a quality character-driven story with supernatural dread, horror fans can expect the same terrifying and chilling atmosphere that made us all fall in love with the series.

Expanding The Conjuring Universe

The terror isn’t stopping at the big screen. HBO is developing a Conjuring universe series, ensuring that the Warrens’ legacy continues on multiple platforms. With both a prequel film and an online series coming, the franchise is evolving into something bigger than we ever expected. Our baby is all grown up!

When Is The Conjuring Prequel Release Date?

Little is known yet about when we might catch The Warrens on the big screen again. Since the project is still in early developement, insiders suggest that the film won’t likely be released until late 2026 or even 2027. We will update you as soon as we know more. Stay tuned!

As horror films of 2025 quickly draw to a close, horror movie fans are looking forward to what the next year has to offer. Thankfully for them, 2026 is shaping up to be a brilliant year for horror enthusiasts. While there are some new and original horror films to enjoy, there are also plenty of sequels that people have been waiting for.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the most anticipated horror flicks coming out in 2026.

New Nightmares Unleashed: Horror Movies That Will Dominate 2026

Scream 7

Scream 7

Slated to come out on February 27th, 2026, Scream 7 is the latest addition to the long-running series that dates back to 1996. It stars Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, and Roger L. Jackson reprising their roles, and also features appearances from Joel McHale and Matthew Lillard.

It’s the first Scream film directed by Kevin Williamson, who is the original screenplay writer and creator of the franchise.

While not much is known about the plot, Williamson has said that with Neve Campbell back, she wanted to return to the vibe of the first film, focusing more on being suspenseful and scary than gory. Either way, you can be sure that Ghostface is going to do all they can do to make life hell for Sidney Prescott and her friends in Scream 7.

Terrifier 4

Terrifier 4

After the huge success of Terrifier 3, which grossed over $90 million at the box office, Damien Leone is back with Terrifier 4. Like the other films in the series, Terrifier 4 stars David Howard Thornton as the demonic serial killer, Art the Clown. It also stars Lauren LaVera as Sienna Shaw, who looks to defeat the killer clown, saving herself and her family in the process.

While Art the Clown has remained mysterious throughout the series, Leone has publicly stated that he’s finally going to reveal Art’s origin and how he came to be. However, he also said he won’t pull the curtain back too far, as he doesn’t want the character to lose his mystique.

With this film being the conclusion of the Terrifier saga, according to Leone, expect it to give fans the answers to questions they’ve been wondering about since the first film was released in 2016. Will it be able to match the commercial success of Terrifier 3? Only time will tell.

Scary Movie 6

Scary Movie 6

Scary Movie 6 is scheduled to be released in theaters on June 12th, 2026, and is the first film in the franchise to come out in over a decade. The film sees Anna Faris and Regina Hall make their triumphant returns to the series, and the Wayans brothers are also coming back to the franchise for the first time since Scary Movie 2.

While the exact plot is being kept a secret, expect this movie to be full of horror movie spoofs, cliches, and the over-the-top comedic horror situations that the series has been known for since it debuted over two decades ago. The film is being directed by Michael Tiddes, who is best known for directing A Haunted House and A Haunted House 2.

How will the first Scary Movie in the last decade stack up to previous releases, and what sorts of horror movies will it spoof this time? You’ll have to check it out in 2026 to find out.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Few zombie or post-apocalyptic film franchises are as beloved as 28 Days Later. The franchise centers on the outbreak of the Rage Virus, which causes infected individuals to become mindless killers, and also details the lives and hardships of survivors.

Despite 28 Years Later (the third installment in the series) just releasing in 2025, the sequel is already scheduled to come out on January 16th, 2026, as the films were shot back-to-back. It’s being directed by Nia DaCosta, who is best known for directing Little Woods, Candyman, and The Marvels.

Not much is known about the plot, but many of the actors in 28 Years Later retain their roles in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, such as Cillian Murphy, Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. Will this sequel get as much love as 2025’s installment (which grossed over $150 million at the box office) or will it fall flat?

Evil Dead Burn

Evil Dead Burn

Coming out on July 24th, 2026, Evil Dead Burn is the sixth installment in the Evil Dead series that dates back to 1981. It’s a standalone entry in the series and stars Souheila Yacoub, Hunter Doohan, and Luciane Buchanan.

It’s being directed by Sébastien Vaniček, who was chosen because series creator Sam Raimi was impressed with his directorial debut in Infested.

As the film only just began shooting in July of 2025, there’s not much information about the plot or story. However, expect much of the same violent horror, possession, and gore that the Evil Dead series is known for.

It may be even more intense, as Vaniček has publicly stated his desire to make it even more extreme and disturbing. You’ll have to tune in when it releases to find out just how terrifying and gory it actually is.

Send Help

Send Help 2026

Send Help is a survival horror film that’s releasing on January 30th, 2026. It tells the story of two colleagues who get stranded on a remote island after a plane crash, and must work together and get beyond past issues with one another to survive. The film stars Rachel McAdams, Dylan O’Brien, Chris Pang, and Dennis Haysbert.

It’s being directed by the legendary Sam Raimi, who is best known for creating Evil Dead and directing the first three films in the series, as well as directing the Spider-Man trilogy. While everyone involved is relatively tight-lipped about the film, with Sam Raimi at the helm, we’re certainly excited to see what it’s all about when it comes out next year.

Werwulf

Werwulf 2026

Set to release on Christmas Day in 2026, Werwulf is a supernatural horror film set in medieval Britain and focuses on a werewolf that stalks a countryside village. It features a star-studded cast that includes Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Willem Dafoe.

The movie is directed by Robert Eggers, best known for films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu. While he’s told several unsettling and troubling stories over the years, he has said that Werwulf is his darkest by far.

With a strong lineup of actors and actresses, a brilliant director, and an interesting and dark premise, this is surely one to check out if you like a little horror around the holidays.

Step aside, Menendez Brothers. Move out of the way, Mr Dahmer. Ed Gein has entered the building.  Monster: The Ed Gein Story is coming to Netflix, and nobody is safe from this chainsaw-wielding maniac. Let’s go!

Who Was Ed Gein?

Ed Gein didn’t just murder; he pretty much invented it! As the godfather of modern horror, he started his killing career in the fields of 1950s Wisconsin on a decaying farm where he hid his private house of horrors.

His first victim came in November of 1957. Bernice Worden disappeared from her hardware store in Plainfield, Wisconsin. She was found in a shed on Ed’s property, killed by gunshot, decapitated, and hung upside down. After a thorough search of the house, authorities found human bones, furniture made out of skin and bones, masks made of skin, and organs stored away.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story – Netflix Digs Up the Original Chainsaw Massacre

Not only was Ed a killer, but a grave robber and an obsessive mamma’s boy. His crimes birthed cinematic legends like Norman Bates from Psycho, Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs, and of course, Leatherface from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Monster: The Ed Gein Story – Netflix Digs Up the Original Chainsaw Massacre

Monster: The Ed Gein Story Plot

This season dives deep into Gein’s twisted psyche, exploring how isolation, psychosis, and a disturbing devotion to his mother turned a quiet man into a cultural monster. Expect chilling flashbacks, psychological torment, and a farmhouse that makes Bates Motel look like a bed-and-breakfast.

Cast & Crew

  • Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) transforms into Ed Gein himself
  • Suzanna Son (Red Rocket) plays Adeline Watkins
  • Tom Hollander (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans) joins as Alfred Hitchcock
  • Directed by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the twisted minds behind Dahmer and American Horror Story

Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story Release Date

Mark your calendars: October 3, 2025, is when Netflix drops all eight episodes. The teaser posters already hint at a blood-soaked descent into madness, and the trailer (coming soon) promises to be a skin-crawling tribute to horror’s roots.

A Pit Stop into Horror: Visiting the Chainsaw Gas Station

    Stranger Things Season 5 Trailer

Wondering when the next Friday the 13th is? Or maybe you are wondering when the next Friday the 13th is through 2050? Find out here.

From the twisted mind that brought us Barbarian, Zach Cregger is back with Weapons, a horror mystery that will leave you shaken long after the credits roll. It promises to be bigger, stranger, and downright scarier than anything he has done before.

The Plot of Weapons: A Nightmare at 2:17 AM

Can you imagine waking up in the middle of the night to find the entire town’s children missing, minus one lucky youngster? At exactly 2:17 AM, an entire class of children just disappears into the night. But what evil force could have taken them? Why was only one child spared? The deeper the town investigates, the deeper the mystery becomes.

Cregger describes Weapons as “fun, scary, and inviting” but also “really messed up“, so you take that as you will. If Barbarian taught us anything, it’s that “fun” probably means agonizing dread, so we got that going for us.

For decades, Stephen King‘s IT has terrified bibliophiles and cinephiles alike, starting with the first page of the classic 1986 novel, then the 1990 miniseries, and bookending with the 2017 and 2019 blockbuster films. But Pennywise isn’t finished just yet. HBO is taking us wayyyy back with IT: Welcome to Derry, a prequel series that explores the origins of Pennywise, the fun-loving neighborhood clown.
