What is a Ouija Board?

The Ouija board (also dubbed the “talking board”) debuted in the late 1800s, patented by the Kennard Novelty Company. The Ouija is a flat wooden board marked with numbers, letters, and the words “yes” and “no.” It comes with a planchette, a heart-shaped piece of wood used to spell out messages. This board is believed to allow people to communicate with the paranormal. The Ouija board gained popularity in the Spiritualist movement, and by 1886, it was used regularly by spiritualists.

However, the board has been heavily criticized by religious groups, who claim the board invites demons and evil spirits into users’ homes. Many discourage using the board for these reasons. Additionally, many accuse the board of being a complete sham. Despite this controversy, the board is used by mediums and spiritualists in modern-day.

Rules of the Ouija Board

DON’T use a Ouija board alone. Isolating yourself can cause an overbalance of power and make you more vulnerable.

DON’T use the board when you are feeling under the weather. This makes you more susceptible to possession.
DO some grounding exercises before you begin. Try meditating and breathing exercises. This will keep you calm and create positive energy in your space.
DON’T taunt or antagonize the paranormal. They will get angry, and you will pay.
DO, if necessary, properly dispose of the Ouija. Don’t just throw the board in the trash. It will come back to haunt you. Instead, you may bury the board face down in cloth and cover the hole with salt. Or, you can donate it to someone else. Although we’re not entirely sure someone else would want it.
DON’T use the board in your home. You don’t want to risk having those spirits lingering in your vicinity.
DO light white candles. They bring positive energy and offer protection to the users.
DON’T use the board for longer than 15-30 minutes at a time. Using it for any longer than that may cause exhaustion for the users and lower the quality of communication with the dead.
DO contact a spiritual leader or paranormal expert if you run into any evil spirits. They’re the ones who know how to deal with these things.
DON’T force the planchette (A.K.A. the device that spells out words) to move. Lightly linger your fingers on the wood and allow movement to occur naturally. You don’t want to end up with any false messages.
DO cleanse the board with sage after use. This will help remove any lingering ghosts or bad energy from the board.
DON’T forget to close your time with the board. Be polite and say “goodbye” to the spirits. Otherwise, they might stay behind to haunt you.

The Conjuring movies have become one of the best horror franchises in horror movie history. Ed and Lorraine Warren were featured in most of these films, as they investigated quite a few haunted locations and took artifacts from a few of the sites where these horrifying events occurred. Let’s take a deeper look at the places and artifacts from The Conjuring.

The Perron Family Estate

The Conjuring was based on the Perron Family’s paranormal experiences in their Burrillville, Rhode Island home. It was first known as the Old Arnold Estates, and generations of families have lived here. The house is now used as a haunted bed and breakfast and thrill seekers can spend the night here.

The Annabelle doll was one of the artifacts taken from the first Conjuring movie. This doll is locked up in the Warrens’ haunted and cursed museum. The Annabelle doll has been featured in multiple movies in the franchise. The doll doesn’t look anything like the creepy one in the movies; it is an old Raggedy Ann doll. The doll was inhabited by the spirit of a child named Annabelle Higgins. When the Warrens investigated the doll, they claimed it was inhabited by a demonic spirit. The doll has been exorcised, but it was unsuccessful. The Annabelle doll is still locked in a glass case and will never be opened again.

The Perron Family Music Box is another artifact that was taken from the Perron house in the first Conjuring movie. In the movie, the youngest Perron child, April, discovers an old music box in their house. She used it to communicate with a spirit named Rory. He was killed by his mother, Bathsheba. When Lorraine looks at the music box, she sees the face of the child in it. At the end of The Conjuring, Ed and Lorraine take the music box to keep in their room of artifacts. There are rumors that it will still open up and play music on its own.

Ed and Lorraine Warren also took a toy monkey from Perron’s home. They claimed that it was possessed as well. There is only a small glimpse at it in The Conjuring. It is seen when Ed talks to a reporter about what is in the room. He tells him, “Everything you see here is either haunted, cursed, or used in some kind of ritualistic practice. Nothing is a toy. Not even the toy monkey. Don’t touch it!”

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 was a movie about a haunting in London, England. The Enfield poltergeist happened in the home of Peggy Hodgson and her children. The family claimed that evil spirits haunted the house. The children say they saw furniture moving and heard knocking on the walls. The family wouldn’t go upstairs, lived in the living room together for 18 months, and were terrified of going anywhere else in the house. Over those 18 months, over 30 people witnessed the haunting in this home.

There is still a lot of speculation that this family made up all of the paranormal events that happened here. There were photos and videos of the events, but some think Peggy made it all up to become famous. The children are all grown up now and have tried to keep their lives as private as possible.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It takes place in 1981 in Brookfield, Connecticut. The Warrens went to help out an eight-year-old boy named David Glatzel. His family was present when a demon possessed him. In fact, his sister’s boyfriend, Arne, wanted David to be safe again and told the demon to take his body instead. While the demon took over Arne’s body, Ed Warren had a heart attack as he watched it happen.

Arne made a lot of horrible decisions while he was under the demon’s possession. It turns out that he stabbed his landlord 22 times. His defense for the entirety of his court hearing was that he was possessed by a demon. The Warrens were at his trial to testify and had quite a bit of proof to show the court, but Arne was convicted of manslaughter. The Annabelle doll that the Warrens have in their collection was featured in this movie as well.

Annabelle

Annabelle took place in Santa Monica, California, when John Form bought his wife, Mia, a porcelain doll meant for their first child, Leah. They added it to the collection of dolls in the nursery and just knew that she would love it. The family began to experience some very bizarre events in the home when they added the doll. They were attacked by two members of a cult, and one of them killed herself while she was holding the doll in their home.

Mia and Leah were attacked by a demon a few times, and they ended up calling a priest to exorcise the demon. Father Perez comes to them, and he tells them that demons are known for attaching themselves to objects like dolls. Father Perez takes the doll from Mia and John and gives it to the Warrens.

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation features the Annabelle doll locked up in the Warren’s collection. This film is all about how the doll was created by a dollmaker named Samuel Mullins. He and his wife suffered a horrible loss when their daughter, Annabelle, was hit by a car. He and his wife wanted to feel the love of a child again, so they took in six children from the local orphanage.

The demon in the doll began to stir up paranormal activity for Samuel and the children. The demon also posed as one of the nuns, Sister Charlotte. The events that took place at the hands of the Annabelle doll were horrendous. This is why the Warrens kept the doll in a glass case; that is where she remains today.

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home occurs right after Ed and Lorraine Warren take her home and lock her in a glass case. The Warrens hired a babysitter, Mary Ellen, to watch their daughter, Judy. They wanted a night out together, and Mary Ellen seemed the perfect fit. However, one of Mary Ellen’s friends shows up at their home and decides to sneak into the collection room, and she opens up Annabelle’s case. This is when multiple spirits get released.

One of the many artifacts from this movie is the Samurai armor, which is one of the main attractions in the museum. Judy and Mary Ellen’s friend stare in awe at this armor. They could even hear the battle cries of the Samurai coming from it. Not only that, they could hear the screams of his victims as well.

The Shadow Doll

There are hundreds of different cursed and haunted items in the Warren’s Museum. Their daughter, Judy, is now in charge of it. One item that hasn’t been featured in the films is the shadow doll. This is a very creepy handmade doll. The story is that it will visit people in their dreams and can even stop their hearts while they are sleeping.

Poveglia Island- Venice

If you are taking a boat ride in Venice, you will be able to catch glimpses of the haunted island. This island is incredibly terrifying, but there is also some controversy that comes along with it.

What makes this island so haunted? It is known as an island of death. There were over 160,000 plague victims who lost their lives here. More than half of the soil on the island contains human remains. On some parts of the island, you can see human skeletons out in the open. This island was filled with death, pain, and punishment. Not only that, but there was an asylum on the island as well. The amount of ghosts and spirits on this island is not for the faint of heart.

Castello Di Montebello

One of the creepiest stories to come out of Italy is about this haunted castle. The mystery of a little girl who was murdered still haunts this castle. It happened on June 21, 1375. A child, who was five years old named Guendalina was outside the castle playing. Her father was the Lord Ugolinuccio da Montebello. The child generally had two guards by her no matter what. The child also needed to be protected because she was albino and couldn’t be out in the sun. She was known in the village as Azzurrina, the little blue one, because of her bright blue eyes.

When her father came out to see where his child was, he and the guards could not find her. It turns out that she was running after a cloth ball and ended up downstairs. She went to the dungeon, and this is where she supposedly was murdered. There is still no real answer as to what happened to the child, but when people come to visit the castle they think that they see her ghost. Visitors can hear her cries; some have seen her piercing blue eyes. The rumor is that she cries on the summer solstice every five years.

Evil Tower: Castello Di Poppi

For those who love a haunted experience, the Evil Tower is one that you just can’t miss. There is a spirit that many visitors have seen here named Matelda. She was a beautiful Italian woman who was arrested for the murder of her lover. She was given the death sentence, and her ghost just couldn’t stay away from the tower.

Matilda haunts the castle and plenty of visitors have seen and heard her walking the castle. She was a maid there, so she spent most of her time trying to find laundry or cleaning the rooms of the castle. Visitors have felt her presence all over the castle and some have mentioned that her ghost does seem heartbroken.

Catacombs of Rome

For ghost hunters who enjoy going to underground haunts, the Catacombs of Rome are just the place for you. These are ancient burial grounds, meaning many spirits just lingering about. Rome had some strict laws about burials inside of the city, and these underground passages were a place for those who wanted to bury their loved ones.

There have been at least 40 different catacombs discovered in Rome, but not all of them have public access. These catacombs are narrow tunnels of darkness where ghost hunters and paranormal seekers can tap into a whole world of the terrifying. For those in search of some haunted thrills, The House of Souls in Genoa is the place to be. Many haven’t dared to spend one whole night here, but if you do, you are in for it. The house is uninhabited, but there have been plenty of ghost sightings and sounds of moaning coming from inside. These sinister sounds will keep anyone away, but if you are seeking some creepiness, this is the place to go.

Some legends have stemmed from this house. It was an inn in the past and one legend states that the owners were murdered here. When the house was an inn, they used lowered ceilings, and in one of the rooms, the killer lowered the ceiling and it ended up crushing the owners in their sleep. The killer then used the help of a gang to get rid of the bodies. These could be the real reason that visitors hear the terrifying sounds of them at night.

Abandoned Hospital: Colorno

Ghost hunters from all over the world have been known to seek out abandoned hospitals. The hospital in Colorno is located in the province of Parma. In 1873, it was used as a shelter when cholera broke out. Not only did the sick seek shelter here, but soon, it led to a place for vagrants, sex workers, and abandoned children. The conditions here were anything but hygienic, and there was a lot of death here.

After the hospital got a facelift, it became a psychiatric hospital. While it was a hospital, the methods that were used here varied from straightjackets and electroshock therapy. The windows all had bars on them, and those who lived here were not treated well. With all of the souls who passed away here, those who come to visit the abandoned hospital have heard moans and screams and even seen people walking around crying. This is where plenty of souls were lost.

The following night, Terry and Duane again heard the same haunting knocks. Their father summoned the police once more, but the outcome remained unchanged: no visible source for the unsettling sounds. This unsettling cycle of nocturnal disturbances and emergency calls persisted for six months. The local police department’s records in Merrill documented nightly dispatches, yet officers discovered no prowlers or plausible origins for the ghostly rapping.

What is the Warren Occult Musem?

Ed and Lorraine Warren were famous paranormal investigators who claimed to have investigated over 10,000 cases of supernatural phenomena. They are most notable of late, for their investigations into The Rhode Island “Conjuring House,” which spawned the horror universe of The Conjuring. They were also avid collectors of haunted and cursed objects, which they kept in a special room in their home in Monroe, Connecticut. This room, known as the Occult Museum, was open to the public for tours and lectures until 2018 when it was closed due to zoning violations.

The Occult Museum housed some of the most notorious and dangerous items in the world, such as the Annabelle doll, the shadow doll, the conjuring mirror, the organ that played by itself, and many more. Some of these objects were allegedly involved in cases of demonic possession, murder, and suicide. The Warrens believed that these objects were portals to evil forces and had to be kept under lock and key. They also performed regular blessings and prayers to keep evil at bay.

The museum was established in 1952 at around the same time that the Warrens established the New England Society of Paranormal Research (NESPR), which is currently run by Tony Spera, their son-in-law, and curator of the museum. The museum has amassed a collection of haunted artifacts from all corners of the globe that range from satanic ritual items to the famous Annabelle doll, which has inspired the ongoing Annabelle series of movies. The movies are part of the larger Conjuring universe of films, which spans eight movies and is based on the investigations of the Warrens.

However, in 2019, Ed and Lorraine Warren both passed away, leaving their legacy and their collection in the hands of Tony Spera. Spera claimed that he would continue to protect and preserve the Occult Museum and its contents. He also said that he was looking for a new location to reopen the museum to the public.

At its most basic definition, a house is a building or dwelling where a small group of people come together and live. On the surface, a house uses its sides and roof to protect the inhabitants from the vicious elements on the outside. But what if such protection came with a particular price? Some paranormal theorists argue that houses instead bottle up the darker elements and energies created inside them and over decades the home becomes malevolent. A sort of infernal spiritual prison that accepts human visitors who may or may not make it out sane and alive.

Many of these notoriously haunted houses have been chronicled in some of Hollywood’s greatest horror films. Some have stuck truer to the source material and others have taken great creative liberties to ensure that audiences have never felt the same about any house they cross or the horror that lay within it. Just what are some of these haunted houses that have inspired the greatest horror films ever made?

Amityville House

Amityville is perhaps one of the most widely recognized haunted house cases ever in existence. The Lutz family bought their dream home on Long Island in December 1975, a gorgeous Dutch Colonial Revival that sat on the banks of South Oyster Bay. The former owners were slaughtered in the middle of the night by their own son, Ronald DeFeo Jr. who later claimed that voices in the house told him to murder his family. Over the next twenty-eight days, the Lutz family endured a living hell as they encountered ectoplasm slime cascading down the walls coupled with freezing rooms and ungodly screams. They fled in absolute terror on January 14, 1976 never to return again.

Their story was chronicled in the famous Jay Anson novel, The Amityville Horror, which instantly became a bestseller. Such a novel caught the eyes of Hollywood producers who in 1979 put the hellish experiences of the Lutz family on the big screen in one of the most recognized haunted house films that have now produced or inspired a whopping sixteen sequels. Today, the house is owned privately and the address changed to deter any members of the public from seeking out the horrors for themselves.

The Exorcist House

Considered by many to be the scariest horror film of all time. For many audiences trying to mentally cope with such an experience, it was normal to repeat the mantra of “it’s only a film.” Unbeknownst to many people both then and even now, there was very much a real-life haunted house that inspired the highest-grossing horror film of all time, and unlike the film, it wasn’t in Georgetown.

The totally unassuming location of Bel-Nor, Missouri is where the real-life inspiration for William Peter Blatty’s horror novel, The Exorcist came from. A young boy known only as “Roland Doe” was given the gift of an ouija board by a family member. Before long, Roland had opened up an ethereal portal from which a demon emerged and possessed his adolescent body. A pair of priests were brought in to perform an exorcism which was said to have lasted days. The boy was eventually saved and grew up to live a relatively normal life, however, the home in Missouri still stands and while it bears the appearance of an unassuming brick brownstone, it once bore home to a demon breaking through to destroy an innocent human soul.

The Real Conjuring House

The Conjuring came along to film audiences in 2013 under the direction of master filmmaker James Wan. But this was no writing room creation, as there was a real home in existence that both inspired the film and introduced the world to the most popular haunted house-hunting duo ever known, Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The unsuspecting farmhouse located in Burrillville, Rhode Island was the catalyst for what is now the first film to be set in The Conjuring film series universe. In 1971, the Perron family, which included five young daughters, moved in with high hopes of starting a better life. Instead, they were met with flying objects, wandering spirits in black, and suffered under the many torments of a long-deceased spiritualist known only by the name of Bathsheba who roamed Burrillville nearly a century before. The Warrens were brought in to facilitate an exorcism along with many house blessings. The Perron family eventually moved and the home has had many owners as recently as 2022 when a Bostonian developer confessed to not being able to stay because of the “powerful energy” within the home.

Ammons “Demon” House

Demon House was the name of a 2018 horror documentary from Ghost Adventures host Zak Bagans. The documentary was a smash hit on the indie film scene and grossed so much money that Netflix bid on the rights to the story behind the property (which Bagans also owns) to make a full-length horror film. What exactly was the story behind this tiny, run-down house in Gary, Indiana?

The Ammons family (mother, grandmother, and three children) should have known upon moving into the home in 2011 that swarming black flies would be a bad omen of things to come. The home itself was a possible host to some black magic and ritualistic mayhem that allowed many demons to enter the home. Shadow figures, levitations, and demonic possession behavior infested the family so deeply that the police and child authorities were called to a local hospital when the Ammons children were literally walking upside down on the walls with no explanation. Exorcisms couldn’t come soon enough to cure the family and eventually they relocated shortly thereafter.

The Stanley Hotel

Yes, we know. It isn’t a house! The Stanley Hotel is not the name of any horror film that average fans may recognize. However, if you were to rename it the Overlook then you would have conjured up Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 psychological horror masterpiece, The Shining. Jack Nicholson starred as a tortured writer alone with his family at a secluded hotel during the snowy offseason in hopes of never going mad. Directly from the novel written by everyone’s favorite horror author Stephen King, it’s a film that’s instantly recognizable. How true to life was this actual hotel?

King himself was in residency at Boulder and stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado for a single evening. A 140-room Colonial Revival-styled hotel on the cusp of the Rocky Mountain National Park, King’s stay was haunting from the start as he and his wife were the only visitors during the onset of winter and took in the vast size and constant eeriness. In fact, it was a fever dream King had of his young son being chased through the empty halls by a maniac which served as the catalyst for his most famous novel to date. The Stanley Hotel is still in business today, on the list of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and takes reservations to this very day.

The Conjuring 2 House

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Haunting served as a sequel to the original box office smash hit, however, this real-life haunted house was not found in America. This haunted house was an unassuming flat across the pond in Enfield, England which is a suburb of the London area. What would inspire James Wan and Hollywood studios to bank on taking their franchise to Europe?

In 1977, a frantic British mother named Peggy Hodgson called the police about the nonstop poltergeist activity in her home, which included moving furniture, sinister voices, and her own children levitating in their bedroom. The Society for Psychical Research headed up by Maurice Grosse and Guyplayfair came in to investigate. What put this haunting over the top and inspired a fantastical horror film was that one of the children was interviewed on tape growling and changing voices that were so disturbing that after the family moved, they essentially went into hiding to avoid bringing about any more terror in their personal lives.

The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House has the distinction of serving as inspiration on a dozen or more horror films, series, events, documentaries, and even a ride at Disney (The Haunted Mansion). In fact, Stephen King used the eerie hauntings from the Winchester Mystery House to serve as the plot of his famous Rose Red miniseries. An even more fun fact is that Winchester is such a magnificently haunted house, that King didn’t even write a book based on it and fleshed out his teleplay directly without any fictional basis which is a rarity for the cherished author.

Winchester is a sprawling multistory mansion in San Jose, California that features 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens which makes all the more surface area for spirits to wreak havoc. The legend attached to the home is that Sarah Winchester, a wealthy widow to the Winchester Rifle fortune, had suffered both her husband and infant dying unexpectedly. After a seance, she learns that angry ghosts caused the deaths of all the souls that the rifles have claimed over the years. She catches the idea to build a house big enough for them all, hence the Winchester Mystery House is born. However, Sarah wasn’t alone in her company, and the mansion is said to be packed with angry roaming spirits that still have neither forgiven nor forgotten who put them there in the first place.

The Changeling House

The Changeling was an incredibly emotional, albeit powerful horror film that opened to audiences in the spring of 1980. The biggest coup for director Peter Medak was that Academy Award-winning actor George C. Scott had agreed to star. Scott played a composer who moved West from New York after the untimely deaths of his family only to rent an oversized mansion in which he finds out he wasn’t alone. A standard horror film with a normal plot, was there more to the story?

The real Changeling House resides in Denver, Colorado, and has all the appearances of an enormous, two-story wrap-around. Its haunting originates eerily enough with a real-life composer named Russell Hunter who rented the home to compose musical scores. Constant heavy poundings and banging on all the walls and rooms habitually woke Hunter and he took it upon himself to investigate the home before finding a third-story room revealing the sinister and actually buried secrets that culminated in a hellish spirit taking over the house. Hidden away in Chessman Park, the sinister home still stands.

The Snedeker House

The Haunting In Connecticut is without a doubt one of the more catchy, and popular haunted house films that was indeed the inspiration for a popular 2009 box office horror hit. The film starred Virginia Madsen as a fictionalized version of Carmen Snedeker, a Southington woman who moves her family into a home in hopes to alleviate the medical travelings of her cancer-afflicted son. The film gained notoriety as having one of the more original plots among film critics’ viewpoints in that this unassuming home was hiding its darker past….of being a funeral home.

True to life, the Snedekers had moved into a former funeral home and any unsettled spirits were not all that they had to contend with. Supernatural seeker couple Ed and Lorraine Warren were brought in to check the home out. Via clairvoyance and other paranormal tools, it was discovered that the lowest basement floor of the home had been used for necromancy, a black magic sorcery art used to summon the dead. Their practices also were said to have involved necrophilia and being in a funeral home, such a supply of corpses to use was virtually endless. Dark shapes, brutally cold rooms, and demonic havoc of all types eventually had the Warrens and Snedekers risking their lives until a massive exorcism was performed to settle the house. As of 2023, the Southington home still stands and is held by private owners who have yet to comment on if any spirits have remerged.

The Real Entity House

The Entity. Just that title alone speaks more fear and terror into many people’s psyches, and that is an absolute fact. In 1982, director Sidney J. Furie adapted what ended up being a largely true haunting account of a Los Angeles area woman named Doris Bither. Actress Barbara Hershey played her with a quiet reserve despite being wailed and assaulted (even by sexual means) by an unseen demonic force. But this film did more than chronicle an abusive haunting, it instead profiled this unassuming home in the midst of a bustling Los Angeles suburb.

The real Entity house and its case became famous thanks in large part to parapsychologist and UCLA professor, Dr. Barry Taff who was contacted by Doris in 1974 to examine her home. Taff was blown away by what he saw; arcing balls of unexplained paranormal lights that seemingly appeared, bent themselves, and disappeared almost upon command. The home was believed to have an especially violent incubus that had somehow attached itself to Doris to unyielding ends. Despite some remodeling and additions, the notorious Entity house still stands today as a constant reminder of one woman’s battle with an incubus.

America’s Most Haunted Prisons

Are prisons and jails really haunted? For most people, the aforementioned places are among the least likely that they would associate with ghostly hauntings and mysterious supernatural occurrences. These penitentiary systems are designed to formally correct and house convicted offenders, but instead many more paranormal investigators today are discovering that they all are actively haunted locations. Here’s a list of six sinister jails and prisons where they serve sentences…..afterlife sentences.

Alcatraz Prison

San Francisco Bay

Built on a supremely small island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz Prison was designed to hold some of the worst federal prison offenders at the time of its opening in 1934. Surrounded by raging bay waters that sharks were partial to swimming, “The Rock” as it was known, housed such reputed gangsters as Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly. However, it wasn’t until the prison closed in 1963 that adventurers and tourists made their way to Alcatraz and discovered that it most certainly wasn’t abandoned….at least by the living.

If you are looking to get right to the action, Cell 14 of D-Block is perhaps the most haunted. This area was notoriously referred to as “The Hole”, containing small rooms with no light and minimal human contact. During its operation, a prisoner was said to have been screaming all night about a grey creature with red eyes that was staring at him, only to be found the next morning mysteriously strangled to death.

Groups, ghost tours, and historical outings to Alcatraz occur with regularity and in 2014 a pair of British tourists found something shocking. During a routine snapshot of a cell, they found on the photograph the ghost of a woman staring back at them. As if the creep-out factor wasn’t high enough, strange gusts of wind, banging noises, cold spots, and eerie banjo music said to be played by none other than Al Capone’s ghost are still heard today!

Pottawattamie County Jail

Council Bluffs, Iowa

Constructed in 1885, this three-story Victorian-styled county jail is the most unique in the Midwest, for among other things it contains rotating “squirrel’s cage” jail cells. However it is not so much the haunts inside these cages that are cause for paranormal concern, but those on the outside instead.

During its eighty-four-year operation, it served as the main jail for those awaiting trial and also those serving misdemeanant sentences. That’s why when the jail was decommissioned and closed, the first spirit paranormal group discovered was a little girl in a tan dress. Historically children weren’t inmates there, but the prevailing theory is that she was buried under the spot where the historic jail was built. She is best known to peek out behind jail cell corners and also tug at the shirttails of touring visitors.

Four inmates have been known to have died in the jail, and they’re not the only active spirits in the place. Inside the old guard quarters, the cabinets have been known to be thrust open and then mysteriously banged shut by an unseen force. Inmates on furlough from the cells? Or guards who still feel committed to watching the place in the afterlife? Regular tours are still held today, so grab your EMF reader and you make the call.

West Virginia Penitentiary

You just know that prison has to be haunted when it’s the oldest one to be found in a state. Built from 1863 to 1875 when West Virginia had just seceded from the state of Virginia, the West Virginia Penitentiary is one haunted place. During its fantastic one hundred and twenty-year run as a prison, it has racked up a chilling amount of haunted tales to keep people awake at night. Violence in the prison was so rampant it was labeled as one of “the ten most violent prisons in America” by the Federal Government. Just who is at the top of the paranormal list in this one?

An entity known as the “Shadow Man” is said to reign supernatural supreme there. Thought to be the spirit of former inmate R.D. Wall, this intimidatingly large and shadowy figure was convicted of the sexual assault of women. As it would turn out, female ghost hunters and tourists to the prison have reported a feeling of being watched as well as having an unseen hand grab them by the shoulder.

Further down near the infamous “Sugar Shack” area of cellblocks is that which formerly belong to an inmate named Red Snyder. Serving time for arson and murder, Snyder was savagely stabbed to death in his cell. Today ghost hunters have picked up an astonishing amount of profanity-laden EVPs believed to be from Snyder himself, who screams that people are invading his personal cell space and are to leave at once. The penitentiary does host a bevy of historical, photographic and of course paranormal tours here. In fact, it has recently been the site of Para-Con, one of the hottest upcoming paranormal conventions around.

Wyoming Territory Prison

Rawlins, Wyoming

Gold hit the Wyoming Territory hard in the late1800s, and with all the ruthless prospectors, daredevil gamblers, and cutthroat outlaws, a prison was most needed. Opened in 1901, it wasn’t long before the prison accepted the death penalty via hanging until 1916 when the gas chamber was officially put in.

Child murderer Andrew Pixley was on record as being the person who took the longest to die in the gas chamber, as he laughed for over two minutes until he was finally dead. It should come as no surprise that ghost hunting groups and visitors to the prison hear an eerie laugh coming from near the execution chamber! Even creepier is the fact that on the day of his death, a black cat was said to have somehow found its way near the execution. Fast forward to today, and people have reported seeing a black cat slink around in Pixley’s former cell. Informal seances involving a candle placed in Pixley’s cell have reportedly been blown out, only to mysteriously relight itself moments later.

Perhaps even more terrifying is the spirit of former inmate Frank Wigfall, who killed a beloved prison employee in the outside world. When arrested and convicted of his crime, once back at the prison he was viciously hung with a rope by inmates off an upper floor cellblock railing. There has been a couple of reports of the ghostly image of a man being pushed off and hung with a spectral rope in full view of the living. Over the decades, the prison took on many different names and stately owners before being closed in 1981.

A piece of Wyoming history, in 1988, a local joint power board for preservation helped to establish the site as a prison museum that remains in operations today, where tours are given with regularity. Being a highly rated, historically thrilling tour, it’s one of the more popular tourist experiences in the state and can almost guarantee that for some, they will be scared straight!

Ohio State Reformatory

Mansfield, Ohio

Over three stories tall, and designed with a German-influenced Romanesque castle-like appearance, the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio is an intimidating presence. Thought to have housed over 155,000 men in its one hundred and four-year operation, the prison has been unaffectionately known to locals as “Dracula’s Castle”. Surely with that many inmates, lots of them would be theorized to haunt the place, however, this is found to be incorrect. It is not an inmate that is the most active ghost here but in fact a former warden’s wife.

Former warden Arthur Glattke’s late wife Helen is reputed to be haunting places all around the prison as her spectral image shows up in the most unlikely of places. Accompanying her spirit is the scent of sweet roses, which were said to be a particular favorite of hers and ghost hunters usually encounter one sensory experience before the other surfaces. Former prison guard Frank Hanger is another non-inmate said to be haunting the reformatory. Brutally murdered by an inmate, Hanger is said to linger around tour groups and if someone is dawdling too long or forever taking their time going upstairs, Hanger’s ghost is said to give them a supernatural shove!

Today the Ohio State Reformatory has been taken over by a group that has cleaned up the prison and regularly runs and hosts paranormal tours and events on-site. And as with most people who visit, this was indeed the same prison used for the filming of the Academy Award Nominated film from Stephen King’s book, The Shawshank Redemption.

Missouri State Penitentiary

Jefferson City, Missouri

You just know that prison has the potential for paranormal and supernatural activity when Time Magazine once referred to this prison as, “the bloodiest 47 acres in America!” Built way back in 1836, the Missouri State Penitentiary was no stranger to the death penalty. With the addition of a gas chamber, over forty inmates were put to death in it, including a pair of child murderers turned lovers named Bonnie Heady and Carl Austin. Decades later after their 1953 executions there, EVPs there are at an all-time high including such soundbites from beyond as, “stay”, “love”, and “kill”.

Prison deaths at Missouri State were exceptionally violent. One inmate named John McBroom had run afoul of some inmates he was sharing a cellblock with who believed him to be an informer for the prison guards. During breakfast call early one morning a pair of inmates charged into his cell, using a pair of broken scissors as a weapon. They stabbed him repeatedly in the eyes and skull and he ended up bleeding to death before he was ever found. Years later, visitors to the prison have reported seeing a pale white apparition of what appears to be a man, bleeding profusely out of his eye sockets, wandering around the cell walkways.

This formidable and chilling prison is still standing today. The Most Haunted Bars in New Orleans

The Old Absinthe House

No better place to indulge your favorite drink than at the Old Absinthe House located right on Bourbon Street in the heart of the French Quarter. However, a visit here and absinthe may not be the only spirit you are liable to encounter. The most famous spirit here is said to be that of pirate Jean Lafitte himself! The early 19th-century pirate and bootlegger are said to haunt the second floor of the bar, where some people have claimed to see not only Lafitte standing near the window in his trademark hat but also next to the ghost of former President Andrew Jackson.

Former employees at the Old Absinthe also have spoken about drink glasses mysteriously being moved around or accidentally knocked off bar tables by unseen forces. Even with some table chairs being rearranged, one of the more audible manifestations is the sound of laughter and merriment from corners of the bar in which nobody is present at all. Did we mention the Absinthe drinks?

Pat O’Brien’s Bar

The hottest spot before, during, and after Mardi Gras is none other than Pat O’Brien’s bar, where you’re likely to encounter spirits in both the bottom of a glass as well as floating past you! The bar’s location on St. Peter street was originally constructed all the way back in 1791. The most haunted spot in the bar is said to be the ladies’ restroom up on the second floor. Women visitors and employees alike have said that even the ascent to the second floor near the restroom brings forth a certain eeriness. Vicious cold spots along with a heavy stomping sound that seems to descend from the antiquated attic storage area above are what they notice most.

Like most establishments in New Orleans, the backside area holds smaller courtyards and the one at Pat O’Briens features typical patio furniture for visitors. Many times during non-peak hours, the staff will have the patio furniture straightened and perfected for any visitors, only to walk back outside moments later and see that the furniture has been completely strewn about in disarray by an unseen force.

Tableau

Tableau is, of course, one of the more popular establishments in all of New Orleans. Sitting on at the corners of Chartres and St. Peter Street, this open kitchen bar that’s built within a vintage stage theatre was first formalized in 1916 although historical records date part of the actual brick and mortar building to go as far back as 1789! To start there is the spirit of a particularly self-conscious Civil War Union soldier that has been seen inside Tableau.

Visitors recount seeing a younger man in Union soldier dress blues who appears to be straightening his gloves, lapel, and even hair all in the direction of what is just a normal wall. In 2017, a YouTube video surfaced of camera footage from the bar area. A bartender is quietly sweeping the floor when a dozen wine bottles on their racks fly off and smash across the room! May Baily’s at Dauphine Orleans Hotel

Located just a mere two blocks over from the aptly haunted St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, the Dauphine Orleans Hotel is a French Quarter staple. Guests at the bar and hotel have reported seeing a young, slender woman in a flowing white dress that passes by them in an instant, only to disappear seconds later! Urban legends over time have many believing that the woman in the ghostly bridal dress is none other than Millie Baily herself, May Baily’s younger lovelorn sister.

There are also sightings of other female entities that can be seen dancing through the courtyard areas at any hour of the day in a period dress who seemingly disappear without a trace! As for the hotel half, one family in particular on the second floor reported to be awoken late at night with their bed shaking violently and fleeting cold spots felt, all in the middle of sweltering Louisiana July heat with absolutely zero explanation! Phantom brides, Civil War-era bordello ghost women, and shaking beds? Sign us up!

The John Zaffis Museum of the Paranormal

Ed and Lorraine Warren are without a doubt the most famous paranormal investigators of all time. Together, the husband and wife pair investigated some of the most violent hauntings in the world, including the Amityville Horror, the Haunting in Connecticut, the Smurl Family Haunting, and the Enfield Poltergeist. Over time, the pair accumulated an astonishing amount of paranormal and supernaturally charged objects that reside in their own household called the Warren Occult Museum. However, this occult museum is not the only one located in the New England area. Paranormal investigator John Zaffis is the nephew of both Ed and Lorraine Warren, and he has accumulated a vast amount of haunted objects.

The John Zaffis Museum of the Paranormal

Based in Stratford, Connecticut, people come from all over North America and beyond to bring Zaffis whatever presumably haunted object is making their lives absolutely miserable. His personal objective behind the existence of the museum is to educate people on all the different types of haunted items that are out there in the world. He has stood very firm in trying to tell people, who might be looking for help, that haunted items are not exclusive to just a singular belief system or religion. Zaffis stresses that these sorts of haunted items can happen to anyone of any faith and that there are people out there like him who are there to help. However, before any object is just handed over by someone and accepted into his museum, Zaffis first takes it out to a small barn on his property. The object is typically kept there under lock and key until he returns with large quantities of holy water and a prayer book containing certain binding spells. He repetitively and religiously blesses the object to the point where any initial negative energy is thwarted. With objects containing a deeper, and darker energy his binding spells help to keep it in place before it can escape and wreak havoc on those around it.

In educating people on the types of objects out there, Zaffis stresses that everyday objects can be used by evil spirits to harbor dangerous negative energy. Mirrors are one such common object that he tends to see a lot of at the museum. According to Zaffis, mirrors are in fact able to hold energy, by becoming trapped somehow between the glass and filament that binds it together in the back. Spirits can definitely be trapped inside of mirrors and they are particularly effective for conjuring spells. Everyday household objects like mirrors are not the only thing that he has large quantities of in the museum, the other is dolls.

Haunted Dolls

Simon and The Boys

While his aunt and uncle perhaps have the most famous haunted doll, Annabelle, Zaffis certainly has some that are enough to give her a run for her money. One such display in his museum is a little pair of hobo-clown dolls that he has dubbed simply, “The Boys.” Innocently enough they were purchased at a thrift store by a woman who brought them home before noticing an uptick in paranormal activity there to the point she was nearly going insane. He displays them to show how innocent little items like that can still have a dangerous effect.

Another is a ventriloquist dummy named Simon, who has piercing green eyes and a wicked smile. It was a gift for a child, whose parent one day noticed the doll talking and moving its mouth without anyone operating it. Perhaps the most sinister doll there is named Chiefy, who resembles that of a miniature voodoo priest in ceremonial garb. Zaffis says that a woman purchased the doll and took it home, only to witness an overwhelming amount of negative energy manifest. She was bitten, scratched, and harassed by unseen forces to the point that she herself needed an actual exorcism to combat the forces hidden away in the doll.

Haunted Objects

Delving deeper into the museum there is a vast assortment of other haunted objects. There is a white wedding dress that was once worn by a hopeful bride who was strangled on her own wedding day. Many years passed before the dress was resold and the new buyer eventually took it to Zaffis where he had someone do a psychometry reading on it. Mid-way through the reading, the reader felt a choking sensation along with a cold grip around her throat.

He also has a simple silver jewelry box filled with innocent looking jewelry. Perhaps the most haunted item in his possession is that of an antique sword. A woman brought it to him after divorcing her husband, but he gave the sword to his son as a gift instructing him to keep it posted up on the wall in his room. Later the boy’s mother saw a black hooded shadow figure in her son’s room gathered around the sword. Upon investigating the object, Zaffis confirmed that there was indeed Satanic inscribed writing on the sword as well as mysteriously cursed objects built into the handle.

The museum is kept on his private property and not formally open to the public, however, Zaffis has given rare glimpses inside one of the most haunted collections in America. Most often, people call him up for a paranormal investigation leads to them taking the haunted objects home with them. Zaffis does get calls to go collect haunted objects, but after picking them up he says he always is plagued with mysterious car trouble.

While the paranormal activity it displays is eerie enough, what happens at the end of the video is really scary and shows that whatever is pushing the stretcher isn’t nice.

Owners at Tyler’s Kiln located in Canterbury, England have recently experienced an uptick in paranormal activity. The Real Conjuring House Has Sold

In the summer of 2013, a horror filmed called The Conjuring took cinemas by storm. It chronicled a supremely violent haunting that took a family of seven supernaturally hostage. The film was an immediate success both at the box office and with film critics alike and has even managed to spawn six film-universe sequels with two more on the way. More importantly, the film introduced to the mainstream audiences a paranormal investigator husband and wife duo named Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Before long, anything and everything associated with the Warrens has been a very hot topic. Six years after the release of The Conjuring, the haunting involved with it is making a comeback in the most unusual of ways.

History of the Real Conjuring House

The basics surrounding the haunting of the real Conjuring house involved the Perron Family of Harrisville, Rhode Island. In 1971, parents Roger and Carolyn moved their five daughters into a sprawling farmhouse on the edge of town. Before long objects moved and disappeared, voices chattering, and apparitions were manifesting in the house. The Warrens stepped in and discovered the home and property had a sinister past in which many members of a single-family had died under dark circumstances. Years of work went into the home before the Perron Family moved out in 1980. But what became of the house?

The Real Conjuring House Has New Owners and Tennants

It was with little fanfare that a couple from Maine named Cory and Jennifer Heinzen purchased the home in June 2019. Posed as paranormal investigators in their own right, the Heinzens claim the house initially started off as quiet and uneventful before things began to supernaturally snowball. Doors opened and closed on their own, footsteps tapping all over the house, random knocks on the walls, and the faded sounds of ghostly voices whispering all over the many parts of the home. The Heinzens say that while there is indeed supernatural activity in the home, they do not by their own assessment feel that whatever is in the home is diabolical in nature. In comparing their experience with the Perron Family both started off eerily similar. However, things eventually transgressed for the Perrons before they eventually left the home. Will the same happen to the Heinzens?

At the present time, Cory and his wife have ramped up documentation in the home by inviting paranormal guru Zak Bagans and his Ghost Adventures crew over. Premiering on Halloween night, the footage of Bagans and his crew’s extended stay inside the infamous Conjuring House will be shown to the world. Will the documentary uncover the sinister spirits in the home once and for all? According to one of Perron’s daughters Andrea, there is no telling what will manifest.
