The ghost haunting the Flanders Hotel is so popular that staff nicknamed her Emily. Unlike other haunted attractions that have give back stories to ghosts, no one knows quite where Emily came from or even why she decided to haunt the hotel. Both guests and workers spotted her spirit in the hotel. The Flanders Hotel was one of the most prestigious and recognizable buildings in the entire city when it first opened. This Inn first came to life in 1839 when Andrew Stockton got a license to entertain stagecoach traffic. It also likely served as a makeshift hospital during the Civil War from 1863 to 1865. People who have stayed at the inn report the experience as playful, whimsical and fun. Perhaps they are meeting with “The Colonel,” who is said to haunt the premises. As I was laying in bed, not yet asleep, in room 204 on Det 24, 2023 I felt an adult size person sit next to me on the bed twice. I sat up thinking I was dreaming when it happened the second time.
