Pat O’Brien’s - New Orleans

504-525-4823

718 St Peter St, New Orleans, LA, USA

Whether it be called a pub, tavern, bar, saloon, joint, inn, lounge, taproom, ale-house, beer joint, or brewery, businesses that serve alcohol are often a much sought after activity for the socially thirsty. New Orleans has the fourth most number of bars to household population in the entire United States. With the infamous street festival Mardi Gras drawing in crowds upwards of 50,000 people within a few city blocks, as well as the city of New Orleans having a very liberal open alcohol container law, the city goes through thousands of gallons of alcohol. The hottest spot before, during, and after Mardi Gras is none other than Pat O’Brien’s bar, where you’re likely to encounter spirits in both the bottom of a glass as well as floating past you.

Is Pat O’Brien’s Haunted?

Pat O’Brien was a man who opened up a bar in New Orleans on the heels of the Prohibition Era in December 1933. Coming off his previous venture of owning a speakeasy in town, O’Brien helped to craft from the plentiful Caribbean rum that coursed through the city, a new and future long-time drink staple of the city….the Hurricane. Due to the overcrowding and diminutive size of the place, the pianos were placed upright against one another which helped fuel the classic New Orleans dueling piano jazz music we have today (these pianos have also been heard to play a few notes by unseen ghosts). Interestingly enough, the bar’s location on St. Peter street was originally constructed all the way back in 1791. Does the age, history, and reputation of serving over one billion people at this location play into the supernatural?

Pat O’Brien’s - New Orleans

Pat O’Brien’s Courtyard

The most haunted spot in the bar is said to be the ladies’ restroom up on the second floor. Women visitors and employees alike have said that even the ascent to the second floor near the restroom brings forth a certain eeriness. Vicious cold spots along with a heavy stomping sound that seems to descend from the antiquated attic storage area above are the first things they notice. Once inside the restroom, the ghostly activity ratchets up even more with the supernatural antics of what is believed to be a former female restroom attendant. Footsteps and bizarre sounds emitting from the restroom stalls; a quick peek underneath the front of the stall shows it to be unoccupied, yet the human sounds continue.

Like most establishments in New Orleans, the backside area holds smaller courtyards and the one at Pat O’Briens features typical patio furniture for visitors. Many times during non-peak hours, the staff will have the patio furniture straightened and perfected for any visitors, only to walk back outside moments later and see that the furniture has been completely strewn about in disarray by an unseen force.

Today Pat O’Brien’s is fully open for business and enjoys a rather busy establishment. It’s worth noting that given the absolute historic location, many people have posed for an array of photographs inside the bar, but have noticed that after the picture is taken unexplained shadowy figures and the outlines of ghosts are spotted in the pictures.

The Old Absinthe House

(504) 523-3181

240 Bourbon St, New Orleans, LA 70112, USA

The 200-Year-Old Haunted Old Absinthe House

As a popular tourist destination, New Orleans enjoys one of the premier street fair spectacles in existence every February with the infamous Mardi Gras. Thousands upon thousands of people immersed in total revelry take adequate and proper use of the supremely lax public drinking laws within the city limits. Popular crafted street drinks such as the Hand Grenade, Hurricane, and Crawdad Bloody Mary make the good times even greater. One of the more hidden gem cocktails for the swarthy city streets is an Absinthe Frappe, which of course is composed largely of absinthe. For those unfamiliar, absinthe is an anise-fennel flavored spirit that contains trace amounts of thujone, a chemical that has been known to pack quite a hallucinogenic punch. No better place to indulge in this sort of drink than at the Old Absinthe House located right on Bourbon Street in the heart of the French Quarter. However, a glass of Absinthe may not be the only spirit you encounter at this historic establishment.

Is the Old Absinthe House Haunted?

The Old Absinthe House

The Old Absinthe House was built somewhere around the year 1807 and was initially a ground floor street saloon that went by the name of The Absinthe Room. It was said that a bartender named Cayetano Ferrer is the one who created the famous Absinthe Frappe from the hotly imported spirit that was being shipped into the city. For decades the bar and the drink were a hit until it ran afoul of Prohibition. The bar was moved down the street for a time to a backroom speakeasy until the Volstead Act was eventually repealed and the bar staff returned to their original location with a second-floor upgrade, renovated into a Spanish villa-style exterior outside, and it was renamed The Old Absinthe House. However, despite the new name, there are some old ghosts to go along with it here.

The Ghost of Jean Lafitte

The most famous spirit here is said to be that of pirate Jean Lafitte himself. The early 19th-century pirate and bootlegger is said to haunt the second floor of the bar, where some people have claimed to see not only Lafitte standing near the window in his trademark hat but also next to the ghost of former President Andrew Jackson. It was here in this very building, according to legend, that Old Hickory himself met with Lafitte to help him get an edge on the plans for the Battle of New Orleans.

People have said that upon stumbling upon the two spirits, that they fade away into the air. Lafitte and Jackson are not the only two famous spirits that haunt, voodoo queen Marie Laveau also has been spotted staring out into space at different places in the bar. Laveau’s presence also paranormally paradoxical in the sense that she is said to haunt around her tomb at St. Louis Cemetery No 1 as well. Former employees at the Old Absinthe also have spoken about drink glasses mysteriously being moved around or accidentally knocked off bar tables by unseen forces. Even with some table chairs being rearranged, one of the more audible manifestations is the sound of laughter and merriment from corners of the bar in which nobody is present at all.

Be it spirits who enjoyed the many good times at the Old Absinthe House or something more unexplained, the activity here is believed to have been fed off the energy of all the many decades of barroom activity that’s been confined here. Today, the Old Absinthe House is open for business, a local ghost tour favorite, and one of the most popular places in all the French Quarter.

Haunted Moss Beach Distillery

650-728-5595

140 Beach Way, Moss Beach, CA 94038, USA

Moss Beach is a relatively small coastal area on the Pacific Ocean that is twenty-five miles due south of San Francisco. Lonely and windswept from the gusty ocean waves, this small town with a population of only three thousand people casually displays its oceanic charms with little fanfare. Things at Moss Beach however were once not so quiet, and in fact during the late 1920s Prohibition Era, the beach reeled in an influx of bootleggers, gangsters, and high-end strumpets. Nearly one hundred years later, the most exciting place then and still, is the fantastically haunted Moss Beach Distillery.

Is the Moss Beach Distillery Haunted?

Capitalizing on the 1920s bootlegging, a businessman named Frank Torres opened up a speakeasy restaurant called Frank’s Place. Basking in the nearby oceanic cliffs, Frank’s Place was becoming a major draw for the California elite and the rum-running bootleggers. Eventually, when Prohibition was over, Torres remained on with the newly renamed Moss Beach Distillery and ensure it became one of the most successful restaurants around. However, it wasn’t before long that employees and guests began to take particular notice of one ghostly specter that has affectionately been called The Lady In Blue.

The Lady in Blue

The origin of the Lady In Blue began during the Prohibition Era when a married woman began to frequent Frank’s Place. Dressed always in a flowing blue dress, she eventually fell in love with the establishment’s piano player. One night they arranged for a romantic tryst on the beach when she was found out by her husband. A knife was drawn and a brawl broke out between the men, causing the Lady in Blue to be fatally stabbed trying to break up the argument. Decades later, the Lady In Blue’s spirit is said to haunt the Moss Beach Distillery.

Employees and some dinner guests have exclaimed that one of the telltale signs of her presence is that an immediate rush of fragrant cold air blows upon them. Some employees have even believed to have heard a ghostly voice call out their own name when they’re alone. Former owner Patricia Andrews confessed that the Lady In Blue was more of a mischievous, and fun-loving spirit instead of a malicious entity. Andrews confessed to being locked out of her manager’s office at the restaurant on more than one occasion by the spirit. Another time she was closing up by herself alone at night in her office totaling receipts and she saw the restaurant’s business checkbook levitate completely off her desk right in front of her! She later said that it floated in a slow circle around the room completely by the Lady In Blue. Amused, Andrews asked the spirit to kindly put it back on the desk, and that’s exactly what she did.

Another former owner of the Moss Beach Distillery named John Barbour, had purchased the restaurant from Patricia Andrews in the early 1990s. A self-proclaimed skeptic of anything concerning the Lady In Blue, let alone paranormal activity, Barbour was staunchly incredulous at anyone claiming there was a ghost in his new restaurant. That was until Barbour himself actually had an experience that he couldn’t explain in the form of actual object levitations. This extended down to another employee who was a janitor there at the restaurant.

The Ghost of Mary Anne Morley

Late one evening the Lady In Blue actually manifested in front of her, clothed in her typical blue chiffon period dress, and tried to verbalize what many believe was her name. Shaken by the event and other apparitions that were made to this particular employee, famed psychic Sylvia Browne was brought in. Sylvia held seances at the restaurant and came up with a name that the spirit revealed to her, Mary Anne Morley. In another random turn of paranormal events, Browne also revealed that there were three other spirits haunting the establishment as well.

On the whole, Browne felt that the Lady In Blue as well as all the other spirits there were genial in nature, if not loving. During her last seance, Browne claimed that the spirit told her that the employees must be vigilant because a fire was going to break out there at the restaurant. Within ten days of the seance, a raging fire broke out in the kitchen area which was thankfully contained. The Lady In Blue’s caring doesn’t seem to stop there at the restaurant. Presumably, on the beach area in which she was killed, some children were playing amongst the dunes in what they thought was shallow water. Moments later the children ran screaming to their parents up at the restaurant claiming that a lady in a long blue dress came to them and warned them of the sudden high tides that were to strike before completely disappearing.

Today the Moss Beach Distillery is a wildly successful restaurant destination in the Moss Beach area. The current owners are very respectful of the Lady In Blue and her supernatural history with the restaurant.

Tableau - New Orleans Haunted Bar

504-934-3463

616 St Peter St, New Orleans, LA 70116, USA

Tableau by definition is a motionless figure or group of figures that are artistically depicted from belonging to a certain point or scene in human history. Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” or Vincent van Gogh’s “Self Portrait” are among some of the more fitting and popular examples of a tableau. But what if we here at FrightFind told you that there is an open kitchen bar down in New Orleans that is haunted by a smattering of ghostly entities that resemble a tableau itself? Not only does such a place exist, but even better….the place is actually named Tableau.

Is Tableau in New Orleans Haunted?

The Haunted Tableau in New Orleans

Tableau is, of course, one of the more popular establishments in all of New Orleans. Sitting on at the corners of Chartres and St. Peter Street, this open kitchen bar that’s built within a vintage stage theatre was first formalized in 1916 although historical records date part of the actual brick and mortar building to go as far back as 1789. The Le Petit Theatre right there in the heart of the French Quarter drew in many Mardi Gras crowds with a fanciful offering of musicals, dramas, and comedy routines. Over time it has been one of the more historical New Orleans mainstays and with the wildly successful open kitchen bar area within it, Tableau is a very popular destination. However, it also seems that it is a very popular destination for ghostly spirits as well.

The Ghosts of Tableau

To start there is the spirit of a particularly self-conscious Civil War Union soldier that has been seen inside Tableau. Visitors recount seeing a younger man in Union solider dress blues who appears to be straightening his gloves, lapel, and even hair all in the direction of what is just a normal wall. While the Civil War certainly had some troops go through New Orleans, what could possibly be the story behind this one lone soldier caring about his appearance some 155 years later? Nobody has ever gotten the chance to ask because the moment anyone treads in his general direction, he completely disappears!

Within the stage area, there is also said to be the wandering spirit of Caroline. Decades ago she is said to have been romantically involved with a theatre worker there and depending on the version of events, was tossed post-coitally from the rafters above to the stage area where she died. Actors now speak about a feeling of dread and uneasiness along with vicious cold spots in the stage area. Sometimes the curtains have been known to bristly and move about wildly without anyone moving them on either side.

Of all things in 2017, a YouTube video surfaced of camera footage from the bar area. A bartender is quietly sweeping the floor when a dozen wine bottles on their racks fly off and smash across the room. Think we’re kidding? Check out the footage and when you’re in New Orleans, check out the Tableau for yourself, if you dare.

The Haunted Comedy Store

(323) 650-6268

8433 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90069

People looking to embark on careers as famous comedians naturally gravitate towards Los Angeles. Landing a gig at the Comedy Store, a landmark comedy club, is just about the best audition one can land to get that big break. So why exactly would a place that has such comedic reputation be haunted?

Is the Comedy Store in Los Angeles Haunted?

Prior to being established as the Comedy Store, the building was a famous Sunset Strip club and restaurant called Ciro’s. All of Hollywood royalty and some reputed gangsters frequented the club from 1940 to 1972. The building was purchased, remodeled and the Comedy Store opened for business.

Over the years, stories of paranormal activity have become frequently reported at the Comedy Store.

  • An upstairs area of the comedy club housed a piano that was frequently heard being played with nobody there.
  • Club waitresses would set and dress candles on club tables only to come back and find them rearranged.
  • A former security guard once claimed to have seen audience chairs mysteriously slide across the floor unassisted, as well as lights flickering on an off. Even once, a stack of chairs left their position and were supernaturally stacked in the center of the room without a sound.
  • Supposedly, the Hollywood mafia made sinister deals down in the basement of Ciro’s decades earlier and their shady dealings and possible deaths committed there have attributed to the supernatural activity in the Comedy Store today.

In the end, most people who have investigated the Comedy Store have found the activity to be from a “prankster” spirit of some kind as no real malevolent activity has ever occurred there.

5 S Railroad Ave, Dillon, MT 59725, USA

Southwestern Montana is not nearly as busy as it once was in the late 1800s. With the railroad, and gold rushes galore, the area was highly traveled by industrial workers, prospectors, businessmen, and even dangerous outlaws. For the Hotel Metlen and all its storied history and decorative stylings inside, just what exactly has caused this place to not only be haunted but also keep its entire top floor level of rooms locked and off-limits for nearly thirty years?

Is the Hotel Metlen Haunted?

The Hotel Metlen in Dillon, Montana, a three-story granite hotel capped with a Victorian style tower, was built in 1897 and by local businessman J.C. Metlen. He made sure that his hotel had the most luxurious accommodations for the bustling area which lies half an hour south of Butte. Having the most decorated hotel in town, it was natural that the saloon inside the hotel became the star attraction. As time has a way of doing, it brought about new ownership to the Metlen over the many decades as the population in Dillon began to dwindle. That’s when the first of many ghost stories related to the Metlen began to emerge.

The Ghosts of Hotel Metlen

It has been the hotel staff that has encountered the majority of the spirits over the years. A young female bartender that helped run the saloon downstairs was familiar with all the stories associated with the hotel, and even had seen an object or two levitate in midair. Unfazed by such paranormal activity, she received permission to hold a seance on the third floor, inside the Victorian tower. With her friends, they brought out a Ouija board to connect with whatever spirits were there. They never stayed in the tower and fled for their lives after the first sentence which spelled out from a spirit, “I don’t want you here”.

Oral legend here goes that a younger male had been murdered somewhere on the top floor and is haunting it. The most terrifying part of the hotel is without a doubt, the third floor. Hotel staff had multiple encounters with a dark, menacing shadow that has been spotted drifting down the hall. The cold spots and general scariness have led to it being indefinitely locked. Not all of the hotel has such a sinister presence as there have been reports of a younger female in a long flowing white dress that has been seen on the lower floors. Her ghostly spirit is said to smile at workers and visitors, giving them a certain feeling of peace upon coming in contact with her.

Today, the Hotel Metlen’s historic saloon is all that remains open at the moment to the public. As of press of time, the Metlen is actually for sale. With all it’s antique accommodations and history inside, the building’s owners hope that a new buyer with supernatural courage will come in and bring the Hotel Metlen back to life in the modern age.

Bend Oregon's haunted bar in an old church, the Platypus Pub

Bend, Oregon’s Haunted Platypus Pub beneath the old church

Right beneath the Old Church on Northeast 3rd Street in Bend, Oregon is the Platypus Pub. I stopped in here to grab a drink and spoke with the bartender Jon, who by chance also happened to be an Oakland Raiders fan. After a few drinks, I hear another patron shout across the bar asking, “so what’s the deal with the poltergeists?” Jon begins to tell stories of employees who won’t work alone, lights that turn on by themselves and a shadowy apparition that has whisked past people in the past.

Bend Oregon's haunted bar, the Platypus Pub

Bend Oregon’s haunted bar, the Platypus Pub

This converted church has operated as a few different restaurants since the 70’s and now hosts the largest brew shop in Bend on its upper floor and the Platypus Pub in its basement. The Pub has a great selection of local beers to pair with your ghost story if you catch my drift. Afterall, Bend is a beer-lovers haven. The cozy Pub has a touch of old and new with a wood-laden bar and ample seating. Enter the haunted pub on the side of the church and down the stairwell.

Ghost Stories of the Pub Beneath the Church

Jon, of the haunted Platypus Pub, tells a ghost story to his patrons.

Jon, of the haunted Platypus Pub, tells a ghost story to his patrons.

Diners and staff have both reported lights flickering. Some have mentioned a heavy presence and some employees will tell you they’ve seen a dark apparition around corners or in the hallway in the back. The building is old and creeky which can add to the spooky factor. Patrons have mentioned that the hallway in the back that leads to the bathroom gives them an eerie ominous feeling, which is where employees have most often reported the tavern’s apparition.

The owners believe the ghost may be an old cook who worked at the building years ago. Others believe it to be the ghost of an old previous owner. Considering the building is an old church, there are many possibilities as the place has hosted funerals and has a long history

How long will this haunted pub be with us?

Recent news around this old church and haunted pub suggest its time may be coming to an end. The property owner is attempting to fast-track a plan to demolish the building to build a drive-thru. The building does not have historic status at this time and is not protected by the historic district of Bend. Locals are trying to stop the demolition, but the next 2 years could be the end for the church, pub and brew shop.

Is the Pioneer Saloon in Nevada Haunted?

In the old forgotten mining town of Goodsprings in the hot Nevada desert, not too far from Las Vegas, stands the Pioneer Saloon. In the early twentieth century, Goodsprings was booming with life and activity, especially in the saloon. It was not uncommon for bar fights to break out between patrons.

In one instance, a hot-headed man was shot and killed inside the bar after he lunged at a card dealer who he thought to be cheating in their game of cards. It is said that the man can still be seen sitting at the small table playing cards. One mixologist has said that in the early evening a kindly looking prospector will sometimes sit at the end of the bar.

Tiger’s Tap Room and Hotel Congress have been buzzing with activity, alive and ghostly, since its opening in 1919.
