There are many kinds of movie lovers these days. There are those who re-watch their favorite flick over and over again quoting every line. There are those who have massive video libraries who love to tell their friends what obscure movie to check out next. Then there are those who love a movie so much that they just have to have a piece of it. That’s where Premiere Props comes in.

OVER 500 PIECES OF MEMORABILIA FROM UNDERWORLD FRANCHISE ON AUCTION THROUGH SATURDAY, MAY 20, 2017

Premiere Props announced they will be auctioning off over 500 pieces of memorabilia from the UNDERWORLD franchise. The series of action horror films stars Kate Beckinsale and takes place in the “underworld” where vampires and lycans (werewolves) are at war. Launched in 2003 with UNDERWORLD (2003) and followed by UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION (2008), UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS (2009), UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING (2012) and UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS (2016), the films have achieved a cult status among fans.

The auction of props and costumes will be a one day event on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at Premiere Props’ headquarters in El Segundo, CA featuring. There will be a preview from 9-11 am PST with the live auction beginning at 11 am PST.

“The UNDERWORLD fans have been ‘patiently’ waiting for this day for several years,” said Dan Levin, Executive Vice President of Premiere Props. “Several have already let us know that they are flying in for this event and we know that they will not be disappointed with all of the incredible items going up for auction.”

John Carpenter’s Halloween Is Returning In 2018

40 years after making his debut, Michael Myers will be returning to the big screen with John Carpenter at the helm. Sitting in as executive producer and “creative consultant”, Carpenter will be joined by Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green and Pineapple Express actor Danny McBride.

And for anyone feeling a bit unsure about the comedy collaborators horror chops, Carpenter had this to say about their script, “David and Danny both came to my office recently with (producer) Jason Blum and shared their vision for the new movie and … WOW. They get it. I think you’re gonna dig it. They blew me away.”

Nobody will be laughing this Halloween

Danny McBride has also been quoted by Variety assuaging any fears that horror fans may have with the following, “David and I are thrilled to step outside of our comedic collaborations and dive into a dark and vicious horror. Nobody will be laughing.”

Going Back to Its Roots

This is the first time Carpenter has worked on a Halloween film since 1981, just 3 years after Michael Myers made his debut. Carpenter had no involvement in the past 8 Halloween remakes and reboots, but it appears he may be going back to his roots for the 2018 adaptation. The film is supposedly being shot with a modest budget and has an expected release date of October 19, 2018 – hitting theaters within a week of the original 1978 slasher.

And a new flick isn’t the only thing we may be treated to in the 2018 fall season as there are currently rumors going around that Carpenter may be working on a completely original score for the film as well. “I might even do the music. Maybe, it could be kind of cool.” stated Carpenter.

Terrifying Halloween Traditions

Despite how you may have felt about some of the Halloween titles that didn’t feature Carpenter, he assures us that this will bring any naysayers back into the fold. Carpenter was quoted during the film’s announcement as saying “Thirty-eight years after the original Halloween, I’m going to try to make the tenth sequel the scariest of them all.”

And if you were among the audiences that felt the previous Halloween sequels and remakes drifted from tradition, you’re not alone there either; Carpenter agrees. During Blumhouse Production’s announcement of the flick Carpenter was quoted as saying “Halloween needs to return to its traditions, I feel like the movies have gotten away from that… Michael is not just a human being; he’s a force of nature, like the wind. That’s what makes him so scary.”

“Do Not Fear.” The Mist Will Appear June 22

Stephen King’s world continues to expand with another classic retelling of The Mist. Much like the upcoming It 2-part theatrical remake, The Mist’s “reimagining” will take on a new format as it comes to us as a series on Spike.

What to expect from The Mist

The “re-imagining” of Stephen King’s classic The Mist is almost here, and with the release of new images from the set this past week, we can’t help but focus our attention on the very human storm bubbling up under all that fog.

“…it isn’t just a supernatural storm that keeps the community captive.”

Spike’s The Mist will primarily focus around a community torn apart by a traumatic crime while trapped together by an other worldly mist. But it isn’t just a supernatural storm that keeps the community captive. Each character appears to be dealing with a whirlwind of internal struggles and a mental claustrophobia that rivals the foggy abyss outside.

Alyssa Sutherland (Vikings 2013–) will star as an “overprotective” mother, and a woman at the center of the towns most talked about crime, forced indoors alongside her daughter (Gus Birney of Bloody Mary) and her daughter’s attacker.

World War Z’s Okezie Morro will play a soldier with amnesia, his identity trapped away inside his own mind, an identity that, according to Spike.com, will unravel over the course of the show while “shocking secrets [are] revealed.”.

But internal battles aren’t the only thing this 10 episode series will be bringing to the table and surviving the creatures that the mist produces won’t be easy. The small town community will face trials unknown as the horrifying mist ushers in – to quote a Spike press release:

“terrifying new reality for its residents, putting their humanity to the test.”

Executive producer Christian Thorpe has been quoted praising Frank Darabont’s 2007 remake of the same name, offering hints that the external struggles faced by the characters will be less hopeful and more in line with the shocking Darabont ending.

“I personally love… (Darabont’s) ending, I thought it was a stroke of genius. We are playing around in that territory, and we also know, of course, Mr. King’s ending. And I know Mr. King actually preferred Darabont’s ending. And so I think we came up with our own spin on a very original and surprising ending.”

No matter the direction the show takes we know one thing for certain, we here at FrightFind are looking forward to a rather “misty” June.

The Nun: A Conjuring Spin-Off

The Nun is coming!

Everyone loves a good horror movie and if previous box office numbers are any indicator, it looks like next summer is set to bring us yet another frightful delight. Director James Wan, the macabre mind behind The Conjuring 1 (Rhode Island), The Conjuring 2 (Edenfield, UK) and both Insidious films is back, alongside writer Gary Dauberman of Annabelle fame, to bring us The Nun.

While little is currently confirmed, we do know that it will be a spin-off of The Conjuring 2 and will focus on Wan’s wildly popular “Demon Nun” character. Also joining the crew, and fresh from Annabelle 2, will be Maxime Alexandre, famed cinematographer of over 30 films including gorgeous gore-fests like The Hills Have Eyes, The Crazies, and Maniac.

A Conjuring spin-off that almost wasn’t

If you’re unfamiliar with director James Wan, he has a history of setting -and breaking his own- records. The Conjuring 2 not only met critic and movie goers expectations but also made a remarkable debut grossing $320.3 million worldwide to date (.5% more than the first film). It also currently stands as the second highest grossing original horror film ever, falling in line only behind the horror classic The Exorcist. Faced with that kind of competition, most of us would probably be pretty cozy in second place, however, with the hype already surrounding The Nun, this may be Wan’s most lucrative venture into the horror genre yet. And one that could have never happened.

During the filming of The Conjuring 2, Wan initially had a hard time nailing down the look of his demonic character, Valak (who in real life has been written about since the 17th century and reportedly takes the form of a small boy with wings riding a two headed dragon). Wan even stated in an interview with i09 that he saved film for additional photography, saying he felt like he was “still discovering” the look. It wasn’t until he had a conversation with the real life Lorraine Warren regarding an entity that she felt had been haunting her that his nightmarish nun took form. After getting the go ahead for re-shoots, Wan took Warren’s description of a swirling vortex hidden behind a dark hood and brought it to life. And while re-shoots are normally a bad omen in the film industry, Wan’s demon nun was anything but, spawning YouTube makeup tutorials with millions of views, horrifying Halloween costumes, and now his highly anticipated 2018 spin-off.

Nun Speculations and Spectors

Wan’s admiration for paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren is widely known and he has proven himself a master at weaving their real life encounters in with historical haunts, such as the Perron Family and Enfield poltergeist hauntings in his previous Conjuring films. So while the studio is being tight-lipped regarding the plot of The Nun, one can’t help but speculate on its content.
When asked by Variety at the world premiere of The Conjuring 2 regarding future films, Wan had this to say,

“There could be many more movies because the Warrens have so many stories.”

So is it possible that Wan may have perused even more of their material to make this spin-off happen?

If so, he has a plethora of spine-tingling stories to choose from, and a couple of them might be very fitting contenders for a new flick centered around a demonic force.

One such case surrounds the Trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, a real court case from November of 1981 in which Arne Johnson claimed he was possessed by a demonic entity when he killed his landlord, Alan Bono. The Warrens documented eye witness testimony of family and friends who had supposedly seen ghostly hands choking 11 year old David Glatzel who also lived in the house. Lorraine herself reported having seen a black mist materializing next to David, in addition to David’s increasingly bizarre displays of hissing, growling and speaking in various other voices. Although already the plot of the made for television film simply titled “The Demon Murder Cases”, this entity seems reminiscent of the spirit that plagued 11 year old Janet in The Conjuring 2.

Or perhaps the demon nun will reappear in a retelling of the Warren’s Smurl Haunting case? A case involving yet another Janet – this time, Janet Smurl and her family, who claimed demonic activity began in their family home in 1974. Bursting pipes, an exploding television set, scratches on walls and pungent odors filled the house until the family reached out to the Catholic Diocese and begged for assistance, only to be met with a priest that the family quickly came to believe was a demon in disguise. Priest robes and nun habits could jibe well together if Wan chooses this direction.

While nothing is currently set it stone, one thing is for certain, no matter how Wan and crew tackle their next installment in this wildly popular franchise there will be an audience and we’ll be among them!

Tilt – Tribeca Film Festival Midnight Section

Kasra Farahani (Director, co-writer) and Jason O’Leary (co-writer) will be debuting Tilt at the Tribeca Film Festival this Saturday, April 22, 2017. Tilt will make its world premiere in the Midnight Section of the festival. In 2016, Farahani premiered The Waiting starring James Caan at SXSW.

Tilt is the chilling story of Joseph, a struggling film maker, and his pregnant wife Joanna. Something is obviously wrong with Joseph, he shouldn’t be this sad with a baby on the way. But you can tell from the teaser that Joseph has some issues. Is he schizophrenic? “I’m watching myself do these things” he tells us. Maybe he’s possessed? “I can’t be normal” he repeats several times. Maybe Joanne can cheer him up. “Everything will be better when the baby comes,” she tells him. Joseph doesn’t seem so sure.

The Tilt Teaser

All seems normal with Joseph and Joanne. Joanne is pregnant with their first child. Life in their little urban house is cozy and familiar. But something is off about Joseph. He doesn’t seem excited about the baby. Work on his documentary is becoming increasingly untethered. As Joseph struggles to maintain the routines of his domestic life, his mask begins to slip. Late at night, while Joanne thinks he is working, Joseph prowls the streets of Los Angeles, deliberately courting danger. Joanne is growing worried about Joseph’s odd behavior. But not as worried as she should be.

Tilt explores how quickly the most familiar person in your life can become the most terrifying. How quickly we can become terrifying to ourselves.

The Endless: Premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Spring and Resolution) debut the world premiere of The Endless this Friday, April 21 at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC. This marks the duo’s return to Tribeca after their breakout films Resolution and Spring. Benson and Moorhead bring us another genre- and mind-bending film to the in-competition section of Tribeca.

The Endless teaser sets us up with a quick look at the horrors to come.

The Endless Teaser

The first teaser for the film has already been released and stars Benson and Moorhead…and a whole lot of water. Seriously, if you didn’t have a fear of the deep before, you just might after this. Following the duo as two brothers returning to deal with a cult they managed to escape from years prior, the clip shows Benson diving into the water in a search for answers to their questions. What follows next simply needs to be seen, but we’re sure festival goers lucky enough to be in the audience will be frightfully pleased.

Critical Acclaim

Benson and Moorhead have maintained critical praise since their 2012 indie release Resolution. Their following hit in 2014, Spring, even managed to garner praise from horror mastermind Guillermo Del Toro, with Del Toro stating on Twitter “Spring is one of the best horror films of this decade. And the only Lovecraftian film that has blown me away.” The duo even earned a spot on Variety Magazine’s “Top 10 Directors to Watch in 2015”. The teaser for The Endless makes it clear that their momentum has only increased.

World War Z Sequel: Will It Happen?

Despite the fact that World War Z 2 has had a few hiccups, including J.A. Bayona leaving the director’s seat for the Jurassic World franchise and its June 2017 release date getting scrapped for the dreaded “TBD” status, we still have hope that we’ll get some gory eye candy on the big screen soon enough. And rumor has it high-tension heavy hitter David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en, Gone Girl) may be leading the project.

These rumors didn’t just develop out of thin air, either. According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Fincher is “creatively interested in directing” the sequel, and despite his less than perfect history with sequels and trilogies, it’s suspected that teaming up with Brad Pitt (who is already signed on and credited as a producer on the film) could give him a nudge forward. If so, it would be the forth film that the duo has worked on together.

Although, even if David Fincher signs on (our fingers are crossed), the next obstacle may be the distribution company itself. Paramount has had an on again, off again relationship with horror remakes/sequels lately. According to sources for Variety, Paramount completely canned their planned Friday the 13^th remake earlier this year, so will they be ready to dip their toes into zombie infested waters?
If they do pull out, will Plan B (Brad Pitts own production company), and Skydance Media be able to pull off a world wide release with only Universal at the helm?

What can we expect with a World War Z sequel Plot?

Lips have remained sealed regarding any plot development but that doesn’t mean we can’t speculate on some of the content. Steven Knight, the screenwriter behind the original draft of the script, has been careful about dropping any hints but if this quote is evidence for what’s in store, we may already know the pacing of the film:

“I think the beauty of the first film was the way that it never paused for breath. It never spent a moment thinking, ‘Hang on a minute, we’d better tell the audience what this is all about.’ It stayed in the moment, it stayed with that person.” – Steven Knight, WWZ 2 screenwriter

Credited on the World War Z 2 IMDB page is writer Dennis Kelly for rewrites of Knight’s script. Will the pacing remain intact? Is World War Z 2 fated for extensive (and expensive) reworkings like its predecessor? One fairly safe prediction comes from Brad Pitt resuming his role as Gerry Lane, leaving the door open for a sequel to pick up in the exact same place as the original.

We expect to be thrown a curve ball there as well, since currently listed in the writing credits is original World War Z novel author, Max Brooks. While the original World War Z film was VERY loosely based on the novel, (really only following in title) it is possible that additional characters or story arcs from the novel will be present in the sequel, but there is not much to corroborate yet.

If the producers are listening to fans this seems like a very real possibility. Despite being a world wide box office success, fans of the novel were not keen on the movies’ harsh split from the book. Bringing in original characters could be the push needed to earn back that attention from the fan base.

The Dark Tapes – 100% Horror. 100% Independent.

Recently we were fortunate enough to get an early screamer, er screener, of the indie horror production, The Dark Tapes. Written, directed and edited by triple threat Michael McQuown, The Dark Tapes has already made the rounds at several film fest circuits, picking up over 60 nominations or wins, including the Rondo Hatton Award for “Best Independent Film” – and for good reason.

What to Expect from The Dark Tapes?

The Dark Tapes is described well as a wraparound anthology film, opening with an ominous voice-over and CCTV footage of our introductory characters Sam and Marie (David Banks and Sara Castro). Enter a blood stained and disordered studio – complete with rolling cameras, bizarre technical equipment, and one single bloody medical gurney. The story reminded us of a Tarantino-esque style of editing and storytelling. The film instantly teases you with a dose of mystery and intrigue while cleverly weaving an anthology of stories into a grand finale.

The opening shot transitions to the introduction of our main characters, Nicole (Cortney Palm of the slapstick slasher Zombeavers), Martin (David Rountree of xXx: State of the Union fame), and Jason (Matt Magnusson of 2015’s Hades) embarking on a mission fit for a paranormal Dateline segment -“To Catch a Demon”.

The very intentional and almost deafening silence that occurs between character dialogue builds throughout the film. The kind of silence that forces your brain to retreat to a safe space and makes you want to pull the covers over you. If only to hear the rustling of the blankets…and well, because we all know those monsters under the bed can’t get you if you’re completely tucked in – or can they? The Dark Tapes might just make you question that logic.

An Independent Success Story

This film is entirely independently produced. Completely written, directed, produced, edited AND acted by a small crew of passionate filmmakers, we are treated to an anthology that rivals cult classics like VHS and REC.

Another treat that is rarely displayed by most other independent films, including indie successes like Paranormal Activity, is the full view of the various demonic forces (or “trans-dimensional entities” as the film calls them) that are present. The Dark Tapes wants you to be afraid and rest assured, they’re going to show you exactly what you need to fear.

But they’re not done there, The Dark Tapes offers yet another tasty treat (can we officially declare April 18th as second Halloween already, because the treats keep coming with this flick). While the film is neatly tied together at the end, each spooky segment stands well on its own, fleshing out characters despite the short screen time, offering Six Flags levels of twists and turns, and individually creating its own small movies inside a movie. (Seriously, “The Hunted and The Hunters” is worth a full-length feature on its own.)

So with all of that being said we can just say one more thing: Get ready horror fans, April 18th has some rather “dark” surprises in store.

Built in 1837, several ghosts have haunted the halls of Selma’s St. James Hotel. But the most infamous are Jesse James and his girlfriend Lucinda. Jesse and his brother Frank frequented the hotel during their criminal heyday (about 1870-1882), and one of them is apparently still there. Most often, the ghostly couple of Lucinda and Jesse have been witnessed in rooms 214, 314, and 315. Lucinda’s presence is often accompanied by the scent of lavender, and Jesse’s ghost sports his best cowboy attire. A spooky blend of frights and history.

Arizona: Jerome Grand Hotel

This five-story Spanish Mission-style hotel was built at the top of Cleopatra Hill in 1927. Originally a hospital, long-deceased patients can now be heard speaking in the early morning hours, while cries of distress echo across every floor at all hours. There are also reports of the manifestations of a six-year-old boy on the top floor.

Arkansas: 1886 Crescent Hotel

Haunt Location: Eureka Springs, Arkansas

The Crescent Hotel is one of our favorites and is featured as one of the Most Haunted Places in America. This historical hotel’s deceitful past continues to haunt it. In its early years, the hotel owners touted the healing properties of the water flowing nearby, but as people began to realize the waters had no effect, they stopped coming. It later reopened as a cancer treatment facility, but once again sold nothing but snake oil to desperate patients. Rumors have it that the guests of these jilted patrons still haunt the halls, urging guests to leave. Theodora is known to roam room 419, Dr. Baker is the Recreation Room, and other apparitions haunt rooms 202 and 204.

Rule #33: Sequels. Zombieland 2 Is Coming!

The script for Zombieland 2 is complete! Now what?

In an interview with Comicbook.com earlier this month, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick confirmed that in addition to Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer (who has already signed on), the original cast may be climbing back on board as well.

Zombieland 2 Budget Concerns

Reese and Wernick spoke candidly when mentioning that the budget needed for the star studded cast is currently the only thing standing in their way;

All of our cast have read the script and love it. Ruben [Fleischer] is signed on. It’s just a matter of making our cast deals and making it for a budget number. All the cast have become superstars now so, we made Zombieland with 20 million, so it’s trying to fit that financial model into the sequel model so it makes sense for the studio and being able to pay the actors what they now get paid and deserve to paid.

Although with an already completed script, the overwhelming success of Reese and Wernick’s R-Rated Deadpool, AND Sony’s teaser logo for Zombieland 2 at CinemaCon 2016, there’s little doubt that budget will be an issue.

Zombieland 2 Rumor Mill

Currently no information has been given about a potential release date, although if filming follows a 41 day shooting schedule, similar to the first in the franchise, we could be treated to Zombieland 2 by late 2018, with some speculating that there may be another October push – just in time for Halloween.

The plot has also been a topic of discussion among critics and fans alike, some wondering whether it will focus on a lost Little Rock or other stray cast member, a la Sophia in season 2 of The Walking Dead. Others suggest it may take a more tongue in cheek route like Shaun of the Dead while shifting their attention to the aftermath of the zombie fallout.

While that may be a stretch, we do know that way back in 2010 Bloody Disgusting reported that while Columbia Pictures was courting the idea of the project they were apparently looking for a “lead villain with comedic roots” and someone to play a “hunky rival” of Harrelson’s Tallahassee.

And that info seems to jibe with an interview Fleischer had with Collider in 2013, in which he hinted that the plot may focus more on human interactions than the living dead:

…it was a continuation of the original story with the same characters. I guess the only thing I could really say is that the threat to our heroes wasn’t only zombies, like they encounter other people that they’re all jockeying for positions.

Freaky Zombieland Facts

While we still have quite some time to theorize about all aspects of Zombieland 2, there’s plenty of interesting little known facts surrounding the first film in the series that you may not know.

Zombieland did you know…

…breaking from standard zombie flick tradition, there is an actual stated cause of the zombie outbreak in Zombieland? That cause? A mad cow infected hamburger eaten by patient zero.
Director Ruben Fleischer was not originally interested in the script, stating that he’s not really a horror buff, but when he saw the potential for a buddy road trip movie he changed his mind. (And we’re really glad he did.)
Bill Murray’s mansion in Zombieland is actually a private residence in Georgia – and it is MASSIVE. Only “3,000 feet shy of an acre” the huge property stands at over 40,000 SQ feet.
Speaking of Bill Murray, he wasn’t the first consideration for the celebrity cameo. Joe Pesci, Sylvester Stallone, and even Matthew McConaughey were also considered for the role. Only after the suggestion from Woody Harrelson himself, was Bill Murray considered – and he picked up his copy of the script from a FedEx/Kinkos.

So where does Zombieland 2 go from here?

In the eight year limbo since the release of Zombieland it definitely seems like some progress is being made on the sequel, and while budget concerns and production have fans in the same boat as Reese and Wernick, this quote to Comicbook.com makes us glad that they’re at the helm:

We see [Sony Pictures chairman] Tom Rothman pretty frequently now and we’re pestering that dude. He’s like, ‘Please, enough with the Zombieland talk!’ We’re pestering him the way we pestered Fox on Deadpool. We’re not letting it go. We really want to see Zombieland 2.

We do too, guys. We do, too.

After a series of pics from director Andres Muschietti (@andy_muschietti on Instagram) showing a colorful balloon filled countdown, the first official trailer for the highly anticipated IT remake is here!

The IT: Part 1 Trailer

While a horror classic like IT leaves some awfully big clown sized shoes to fill, horror master Stephen King has given the film his blessing, tweeting the following just this past month:

Andy Muschietti’s remake of IT (actually it’s Part 1–The Losers’ Club) succeeds beyond my expectations. Relax. Wait. And enjoy.

Planned as a two part release, IT: Part 1 -The Losers’ Club will focus on everyone’s favorite Derry, Maine school children and their nightmare inducing nemesis, Pennywise the clown. And while the sequel hasn’t nabbed a green light quite yet, if the movie lives up to the trailer we’re sure to see the Derry children back as adults soon.

The Cast of IT

The film has a notable cast, including Megan Charpentier and Javier Botet of Guillermo Del Toro’s horror hit Mama (as Gretta and The Leper respectively), Stranger Things actor Finn Wolfhard as Richie “Trashmouth” Trozier, and Jaeden Leiberher of St. Vincent fame as “Stuttering Bill” Denbrough, leader of The Losers’ Club.

But it is perhaps the choice of Bill Skarsgard as the shape shifting Pennywise that has everyone most excited…and horrified. Speaking to Collider.com, Producer Dan Lin had this to say regarding Skarsgard’s audition, “You’ve had Ledger doing almost a clown joker, you’ve seen obviously Tim Curry as a clown. We wanted someone who created a Pennywise character that would stand on its own and Bill came in and created this character that frankly freaked us out.”

After viewing the trailer ourselves, it’s obvious Skarsgard has kept his monstrous momentum up and Lin isn’t the only one “freaked out” by his performance. But don’t just take our word for it, watch the first official IT trailer for yourself.

IT is scheduled to hit theaters September 8, 2017.

Tuberculosis, Stephen King and The Haunted History of The Iconic Stanley Hotel

Freelan O. Stanley may not be a household name for many but his technological and (inadvertent) horror contributions likely ring some bells.

Following the successful sale of a dry plate photography manufacturing plant (to the founder of what is now Kodak), Freelan and his brother Francis gained true business notoriety as the creators of the best-selling steam powered automobile, the Stanley Steamer.

A haunting diagnosis

Unfortunately, Freelan’s success and financial standing did not guard against health maladies of the time. After becoming afflicted with tuberculosis, he along with his wife Flora loaded up their Stanley Steamer wagon, waved goodbye to the coastal shores of Massachusetts and hello to the dry air of the Rocky Mountains – specifically, Estes Park, Colorado.

Not one to let health concerns get in the way of good business, Freelan had soon purchased over 6,000 acres of land in the park, eventually creating a hydro plant in Fall River and the area’s first distributed pipe water system. Still, that wasn’t enough for this creative entrepreneur, so making a potentially risky business move at the time, Stanley invested upwards of half a million dollars in what is today one of the most iconic hotels in the United States; The Stanley Hotel.

Funneling not only money but electricity and water from his other Estes Park businesses directly into the property, Stanley created – according to an Estes Park newsletter, the Trail Gazette – one of the “first hotels west of the Mississippi to have electricity.” Posh, elegant and harboring a certain East Coast flair, the hotel contrasted wildly with the natural, rugged aesthetic of the wild west. Twenty-five miles from the closest railway and sitting at a breathtaking 7,500 feet above sea level, the hotel garnered attention around the country.

An explosive beginning

Business boomed for the first few years, luring in wealthy socialites who longed for fresh air and natural surroundings but with the convenience of their luxury commodities. It wasn’t long, however, before tragedy struck. According to the hotel’s archivist, a thunderstorm lashed out during a warm summer evening in June 1911. Knocking out the power to the hotel, the guests were ushered to the lobby while hotel staff teamed up to light the backup gas powered lamps. Room 217 (changed to room 237 in Stanley Kubrick’s movie adaptation of The Shining) had an unknown gas leak which was quickly discovered by Elizabeth Wilson as she entered the room holding a candle. Of the three maids injured in the massive explosion (which is reported to have blown up 10% of the 70,000-foot hotel), Wilson survived, continued working for the hotel, and became head chambermaid until her death in the 1950s.

Following renovations and repairs, the hotel reopened to a somewhat lackluster crowd. Whether it was apprehension regarding the accident or the flurry of local news reports that seemed to heighten the mystery of the events (Wilson’s name was incorrectly documented in one, survivors were listed as deceased in others, and one even reported that the gas leak should never have occurred considering the lamps were all off at the time of the accident), the popularity of the hotel dwindled.

A hotel fit for a King

Rumors of ghosts and unexplained events began circulating; further warding off a wary public. Over the years, the hotel changed owners, faced foreclosure and likely would have closed its doors for good had it not been for an intrigued author – hailing from Freelan Stanley’s own home state of Maine – Stephen King.

King and his wife visited the property in 1974 and found themselves to be the only guests at the hotel prior to its winter closure. Perhaps it was the isolation or the haunting tales of the accident that spooked King, but after spending only one night in room 217 and having vivid nightmares of his small son being chased down the long corridors of the hotel, he checked out with frightful inspiration. According to King himself, after waking from his nightmare and in the span of one cigarette he had mentally outlined the plot of what would become The Shining.

It was King’s fictional tale of a winter hotel attendant that spawned a renewed interest in the property. Guests checked in with hopes of having their own ghostly experience and if witness testimonies can be believed, many have had them.

Ghosts and guests

Visitors leave the haunted Stanley Hotel with reports of disorganized luggage, thumping on walls and doors, childlike laughter, and even unusual odors, those being specifically attributed to a ghost named Eddie who earned the nickname “Stinky Man”. (According to hotel staff, however, Eddie apparently resented the nickname and now only produces pleasant smells.) While Elizabeth Wilson did not perish in the accident, it is her spirit that is the most prominent presence at the hotel today. Possibly still trying to organize and tidy up rooms, there are accounts of her presence lingering around room 217, unpacking guest’s suitcases and as reported by a few unwed couples, climbing into bed and trying to separate the sleeping lovers.

Multiple paranormal experts and film crews have visited the hotel, including Zak Bagans and the Ghost Adventures crew and Syfy’s Ghost Hunters. According to the hotel’s own media center, Ghost Hunter’s lead investigator Jason Hawes experienced a glass shattering on his nightstand and doors opening and closing by themselves. The Stanley Hotel embraces its notoriety and paranormal fame by scheduling ghost tours as well as paranormal conferences in advance.

Continuing a legacy

Today the hotel brings in thousands of guests annually. Some are skeptics and others true paranormal devotees looking to reaffirm their own beliefs. Some are history buffs, there to simply admire the colossal monument that marked a new era of technology for the west. Others come as nature enthusiasts, simply looking to gaze upon the natural beauty of snowcapped mountains. The same mountains that so strongly tugged at Freelan O. Stanley’s heart when he first chose the home of his now famous namesake.

Whatever their reasons, visitors from all over the world flock to the area, and if the tales are all to be believed, it’s likely that the Stanley Hotel will be forever occupied by a few die hard, resident spirits.

Castlevania is Coming to Netflix… All Covered in Blood.

I know what you are thinking: the Super Mario Bros movie sucked! And what about the Double Dragon Movie? Surely a good video game adaptation will never be any good, right? We can’t promise you anything, but Netflix is going to try really hard to break the curse with its Castlevania animated series coming out later this year. They feel so good about it that they already green-lit season two for 2018. Did we mention that it’s going to be gory… reaaaallllllyyy gory?

The word in the castle of Netflix is that the series “is not for kids” and it will be super violent. We’re in!

Just in case you haven’t dusted off your Nintendo in a while, here’s a refresher. Castlevania, released in 1986 by the Japanese entertainment company Konami, is about a family of vampire hunters (The Belmonts) and their relentless pursuit to kill Dracula. 100 hundred years after they kill him, Dracula is resurrected and the Belmont descendants have to kill him again. This went on until the last game from the franchise in 2015.

The evolution of Castlevania

Series producer, Adi Shankar, of Dredd and The Grey, says that it has a “Game of Thrones vibe to it.” Intriguing! He also states:

I’m personally guaranteeing that this is going to be the best f–king video game adaptation ever made to date. I’ve seen it, and it’s f–king amazing. – Producer, Adi Shankar

When will Castlevania premiere on Netflix?

2 seasons at 4 episodes each have been confirmed. Each episode to be 30 minutes in length.
The first season will land on Netflix in late 2017 with no official date. The second season begins in 2018.

Who will battle Dracula in the Neftflix Castlevania series?

Rather than stick with some of the previous Castlevania characters, it’s been said the series will introduce a new Belmont clan character. Plans for other characters are still in development, so it’s safe to hold out hope to hear from Alucard and John Morris in the series at some point. Adi Shankar has confirmed the story will be based off of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.

Ready your whips, daggers, swords, cudgels, and “special weapons.” It’s going to be a blood bath.
