About the House

Whispers Estate was built in 1894 (earliest discovered records).

In 1899 (or 1901, depending on which source you reference), Dr John and Jessie Gibbons purchased the house from the original owners, Dr George and Sarah White. Dr John and Jessie Gibbons reportedly adopted abandoned/orphaned children. One of these children, a 10-year old girl named Rachael, started a fire in the front parlor, being badly burned, and died 2 days later in one of the upstairs bedrooms. But, you can still hear, and sometimes see, her running around the house today.

A 10-month infant, Elizabeth, died in the master bedroom of unknown causes, but there’s still the scent of baby powder, and you can sometimes still hear her cries.

Jessie died in that same bedroom after a bout with double-pneumonia. Guests sleeping in that room often awake to labored breathing and coughing. Some even report feeling as if someone is sitting on their chest. The most common paranormal activity in this room is the closet doorknob will frequently jiggle for a few moments, stop suddenly, and the closet door will pop open. The maximum reported count for repeatable occurrences is 5 within a couple minutes. this of course required persons in the room to close the door each time.

Dr Gibbons was a prominent doctor in town, having his office in the 1st floor rooms in the house. Given the time period and medical field, it is likely many patients died there during his practice of ~26 years.

Stories of subsequent owners/occupants suggest others have encountered their own demise, such as a gentlemen in the 50s/60s that died in the upstairs bathroom, a young boy that died from falling down the front staircase (recently spoke with the relatives of this little boy; got name and keywords), and more.

In 2006, The previous owner bought the house after being vacant for a few years. During its restoration, strange activity started to occur. Activity in the house continued, and even increased, subsequently earning the name ‘Whispers Estate’ after guests repeatedly reported hearing disembodied voices whispering in their ears.

The current owner 1st visited the house in September 2007 as part of an event night for the Mid-South Paranormal Convention.  5½ hours into the investigation not a damn thing had occurred. Then, without wanring, the fit-hit-the-shan and they almost soiled themselves twice that night! They returned almost every other weekend for the next 4 months, at which point they contacted the then-owner about purchasing the house

Since 2006, the house has been investigated by numerous paranormal groups as well as visited by psychics & demonologists.  It has been featured on numerous TV shows, multiple documentaries, specials, radio shows, etc.

There are supposedly 4 graves in the backyard, not including, what psychics have called, a pit-grave which they say contain amputated limbs, internal organs, aborted fetuses, etc…

There is reportedly a portal/vortex which runs up through the house from the front parlor into the 3rd floor room/attic. the room in the attic is said to be the heart of the house. Guests that are brave enough to sleep in this 3rd floor room report horrible nightmares and sometimes hear something trying to get in the room via the door (door knob jiggling).

Visitors have reported sighting a shadow, which is now called ‘Big Black’, an entity which psychics says ‘is not of this world’. While most commonly encountered in the doctor’s rooms, it has been seen throughout the house.

Guests have experienced earthquake-like tremors while in Doctor’s bathroom… No… not ‘those kinds’ of tremors… we’re referring to tremors of a paranormal origin.

EVP sessions have revealed many entities in the house at any given time, But you don’t always need recording equipment to hear these disembodied voices at Whispers Estate. Many young women have reported hearing Dr Gibbons whisper in their ears, as well sometimes grabbing/gropping them.

Guests claim to see the beds/couches visible shake, while still others sleeping on beds and couches have reported having them shake violently…..

(Often, guests decide they’d rather sleep as close to the front door as possible, just in case…)

Investigators often do ’rounds’ throughout the house at different times throughout a night. Sometimes, upon leaving the servant’s quarters, just after the last person exists the room, the solid, heavy, wooden door slams with unrestrained force by unseen presence.

There are times when guests notice pleasant smells of baby power drift throughout the house, but the scent of pungent cologne/aftershave, cigar/tobacco, rancid meat/cabbage, dirty medical bandages, and more are not uncommon.

Guest have reported their recording camcorders being moved by an unseen presence, thereby disturbing the viewpoint of the intended target.

If you’re not completely freaked out, and think you have what it takes to spend a night here, please contact us to make a reservation, to have for yourself,
…a paranormal experience at Whispers Estate.

Dead Man’s Farm was owned by the Bludgeon family for many years.  The few people that can still remember say the family was very secluded; doing everything for themselves at the farm, raising their own crops, slaughtering their own meat and even performing medical and dental procedures on each other.

That is until they fell onto hard times.  Witnesses reported that they were using BLACK MAGIC on the crops, the farm animals and eventually the poor farmhands.  Some people believe that the Bludgeon family was using this dark magic on the physical bodies and the very souls of their victims… while others believe they weren’t really human to begin with.

They twisted the land and the beasts into UNHOLY ABOMINATIONS in their attempt to make the farm more profitable.  Being unsuccessful in the end, the farm was foreclosed on. What the police found was a gruesome scene of human corpses, animal parts and some unnatural creatures… but the Bludgeon family was never prosecuted.

Unfortunately, no witnesses survived to testify against any of the Bludgeon family members. Some simply disappeared, others died around mysterious circumstances.

William A. Irvin Haunted Ship Tours

Welcome to the home of the William A. Irvin Haunted Ship Tours in Duluth, Minnesota.

Are you ready for a real scare?  Here’s the place for it; but we warn you, tour if you dare.

Each year, for the month of October the Irvin transforms itself into a haunted ship, where the ghosts come alive. Your worst nightmares will come to life and it will seem like they will never end. During the self-guided tour, you’ll see how the once historic ore ship has been flipped inside out to reveal its true identity. The haunting of the Irvin is not just a rumor, mysterious sightings have been recorded. Don’t be too sure the flickering lights and slamming doors are part of the act, our ghosts may appear at any time. Walking through the dark, eerie hallways you’ll get the feeling that you’re never alone, because you won’t be. In this ship, no place is safe.

Starting in the engine room you will travel through the ship until you land in your final destination that is below the freezing waters of Lake Superior in the maze of terror. If you thought the rest of the ship was terrifying, just wait until you step down into the maze. While down in the pitch dark “dungeon” of the ship, not knowing where you’re going is the least of your worries. Watch your back; you never know who’ll be hovering over your shoulder.

If you think you’re brave enough to face your fears, come to the Haunted Ship. But remember only the tough ones make it through, alive.

813 Congress Ave, Houston, TX 77002, United States

Built by Nathaniel Kellum back in 1847, La Carafe on Congress Ave, is one of the oldest bars in Houston. The building is said to be haunted by the ghost of an African American man who has been seen by many visitors. The building has a ton of history and has remained intact throughout the years. The building originally housed The Kennedy Bakery, served as a Pony Express station and was passed down by 5 generations of the Kennedy family before the current owners, The Wenglars purchased it.

La Carafe is welcome to ghost hunters. In October, they will even welcome guests with Seances.

Ghost Sightings

  • The ghost of Pamelia Mann is said to push pretty women down the stairs. Mann ran the boarding house called the “Mansion House,” which was a questionable establishment. The bar employees think she is a lost spirit that was not able to cross over to the light.
  • A ghost has been seen waving out the 5th story window by many guests.

Stop in and ask the bartender for a story or two. The employees and owners of La Carafe are open to telling ghost stories and many of the guests of Houston’s Market Square maintain that this is a hotspot for paranormal activity.

Maribel Caves Hotel Hell

Maribel, WI 54227, United States

The History of the Haunted Maribel Caves Hotel

Now reminiscent of Western European Medieval castle ruins, the Maribel Caves Hotel originally began as a therapeutic hotel/spa where the “tired and worn” could be “invigorated.” Thanks to its unique location, both in close proximity to a natural spring and the railroad that passed through Maribel, the hotel became a popular rest stop for many traveling Americans throughout the early 1900’s. In fact, notorious gangsters and bootleggers such as John Dillinger and Al Capone are said to have been included among the guest list. As the Maribel Caves Hotel also functioned as a spring water bottling plant with carbonizing equipment, one can imagine why they might have fixated on the particular location.

Still, contrary to its reputation, the hotel and bottling plant began to “go under” around 1915 and was eventually purchased by Adolph Cherney, owner and operator of a local construction company, in 1931. He and his family resided here until his death, which was preceded by the death of his young daughter, Norma, who expired under mysterious circumstances.

Hotel Hell Opens For Business

Maribel Caves Hotel Hell

Under a new owner, Jeff Miller, the building reopened as a hotel again in 1981. Miller saw little success, however, as the hotel had adopted a reputation of being haunted by angry spirits by that time. Then, in 1985—with no known cause—the building was engulfed in a fire large enough to reduce the building to its limestone bones.

In the years that followed, the dilapidated fortress earned a third name, “Hotel Hell.” Since it was gutted and abandoned, bone-chilling rumors have constantly surrounded the place. Many claim to have seen the figure of a man that continually looms in various windows around the building, always facing out. Additionally, visitors have experienced feeling cold hands pressed on their back when they walk around the ruins alone. Some have heard voices and shrieks coming from the basement and caves below. Others have sworn that stones and other objects move on their own accord.

Hotel Hell Pt. II?

Maribel Caves Hotel in Ruins

Maribel Caves Hotel as it stands today. People say it’s more haunted than ever.

Today, the property is declared structurally unsafe due to being nearly leveled by a tornado. Still, the rumors of paranormal activity persist.

Most recently, the newest owner—who has long tried to put rumors of its haunting to bed—has voiced plans to rebuild the hotel to its former glory. If there is validity to the many ghost stories, only time will tell.

Omni Homestead Resort

1-888-444-OMNI

7696 Sam Snead Highway, Hot Springs, Virginia 24445, United States

The most well known of the ghosts at the Omni Homestead Resort is a bride from the early 20th-century who took her life when her fiance disappeared on their wedding day.

She is seen walking through the hallways on the 14th floor stopping guests to ask them what time it is. Apparently, she’s hoping that her fiance will return to the hotel, and she’ll finally have her happy ending.

If you stay at the resort, you may just encounter this sad spirit.

406 Main St, Red Wing, MN 55066, United States

Minnesota’s Haunted St. James Hotel

It’s not often that a hotel embraces its haunted past. Many hotels will rebuke the lore of ghost sightings and paranormal activity. Red Wing, Minnesota’s St. James Hotel embraces it. Ask for the haunted rooms and they’ll direct you to the 3rd floor. Room 310 is Clara’s room, the ghost of Clara Lillyblad who owned the hotel from 1932 to 1972.

The hotel was erected in 1875 during Red Wing’s wheat-trading boom and was one of the most modern hotels of its time. Sitting blocks from the steamboat docks and train depot, the hotel was a hub for business owners and travelers alike. Several of those guests appear to have stuck around a bit.

Haunted Hotel Rooms & Floors

  • 3rd floor is where most of the hotel’s ghost sightings have taken place.
  • Room 310 is Clara’s room.
  • The basement is said to be haunted and some have reported seeing faces staring back at guests.
  • All floors may be haunted by the ghost of a worker who fell to his death during the building of the hotel. He also has been seen on the grand staircase of the Saint James in his overalls.
  • All floors have seen an spirit that slams doors, cold spots, whispering voices, and the cries of children at many times during the hotel’s history

Suggestion for Your Haunted Stay

When reserving a room, ask for the haunted rooms. The hotel will make accommodations to try and make your stay as spooky as possible.

640 S Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90014, United States

Is the Cecil Hotel truly haunted? The true horror stories that surround this 1924 building weave a dark and uncomfortable tale rife with unexplained deaths, serial killers, and horrors that are usually only told in the movies.

Unexplained: Cecil Hotel & Elisa Lam

Elisa Lam is the most recent victim of the Cecil Hotel. The story of her mysterious disappearance on January 31, 2013 and the unexplained circumstances of her death contribute to a visceral cloud of horror haunt the Cecil to this day. Before she goes missing, Elisa is seen acting very strangely in the elevator of the Cecil Hotel. An elevator video recording released by the LAPD on Feb 13th, shows a very eerie glimpse into what may be Lam’s final moments. On the tape, she appears erratic and looks as if she’s interacting with someone who does not show up on the screen. She’s on the 14th floor and she eventually disappears and is not seen alive again. Weeks later, her body is found in the water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel on February 19th, an area that was supposedly locked and unreachable by anyone other than hotel employees. The body was found by hotel employees after guests had complained of low water pressure and the water was black and tasting “funny.”

The Elisa Lam Cecil Hotel Disappearance Video

It’s important to note that it was reported that Elisa’s body had no evidence of drugs or alcohol in her system at all. She may have suffered from mental anxiety. Her demise has many factors that paint an ominous picture.

Serial Killers Haunt the Cecil Hotel

Over the years, the Cecil has been home to 2 infamous serial killers, Richard Ramirez (the Night Stalker) and journalist Jack Unterweger. Richard “The Night Stalker” Ramirez murdered at least 13 people during the 80s while staying at the Cecil Hotel. He even disposed of his bloody clothes in the hotel dumpster. Coincidentally, The Night Stalker’s character appears in the American Horror Story: Hotel as a welcomed guest of James Patrick Marsh.

Jack Unterweger was another serial killer that called the Cecil home. Unterweger was actually a police ride-along journalist during the day. At night, Unterweger brutally murdered prostitutes by hanging them from their undergarments. Another strange circumstance of this story is that Unterweger actually was a key journalist on his own murders at one point during the investigation.

These 2 horrifying accounts of serial killers staying at this hotel are only the beginning of a history of bloodshed.

The Black Dahlia

In 1947, Elizabeth Short was last seen alive at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Short is also reported to have visited the Cecil Hotel in the days leading up to her murder. Her gruesome murder dubbed her “The Black Dahlia” and remains unsolved to this day. The Black Dahlia went missing on January 9th and her body was found severed in half at a vacant lot the 15th of January, 1947.

Hauntings at the Cecil Hotel

The hotel looms under a dark shadow that spans decades of horror, death, mystery, and downright scary stuff. There have been reports of strange dark images in the shadows, spooky noises, and items moving in the night. Is the Cecil Hotel haunted? The facts add up to a considerable history of bad stuff taking place here. If there are any hotels worthy of the glamour of AHS, this is one of them.

AHS Hotel: Cecil Hotel Inspiration

The Cecil Hotel’s haunted history appears to have lent a lot of it’s history to the famed American Horror Story: Hotel, which has borrowed the stories of Elisa Lam in the form of “Kara” as well as its serial killer Richard Ramirez. An interesting note about Unterweger, is that he was at one point, a key journalist covering his own murders, somewhat similar to John Lowe who is investigating his own murder cases. Spot the similarities by reviewing the TV version of the Cecil if you dare.

Now the Stay On Main

Trying to hide from its inglorious past the Hotel Cecil has been rebranded as The Stay On Main. The current ownership regime is very tight lipped and appears to be trying to hide from the past. Employee responses and unwillingness to answer questions forthright can be expected from a business that is trying to maintain a respectable image in a competitive market such as Los Angeles. The hotel employees would not speak of Elisa Lam, but did elude to the history of the health hazards of the roof’s water tank. They also disclosed that security upgrades have been made and that there have been efforts to improve the hotel’s clientele.

Haunted Places in the Hotel Cecil

  • 14th Floor – The last known place Elisa Lam was seen alive. Do you dare to ride the elevator? The same floor that Richard Ramirez stayed.
  • 14th Floor  – Where Richard Ramirez stayed in the Cecil Hotel.
  • 9th Floor – Is where Pauline Otto jumped from her hotel room window. She landed on George Gianinni and both died from the impact.
  • 7th Floor – is where Goldie Osgood’s unsolved murder took place before Richard Ramirez’s stay.

“The Cecil will reveal to you whatever it is you’re a fugitive from,” said novelist Steve Erickson after his stay in June of 2013.
