South Dakota Top Haunt: Fear Asylum

Don’t be scared. Some people make it out.

Fear Asylum

The largest and most visited haunted horror attraction in the Dakotas, The Fear Asylum is not an attraction for children or even some matured teenagers.  Boasting some of the most extravagantly decorated set pieces and ghouls, many visitors claim that once they enter the Asylum it’s like they are stepping foot into a real-life horror film!  Owner Guy Burdick micromanages the haunted attraction with such dedicated detail to originality that different scares within the Asylum are constantly being changed to guarantee that a scare almost never happens in the same place twice.  “It’s not designed to be super gory or Satanic,” said Burdick.  “It’s designed to be creepy and to put you in a world to decide if this is real…..or not”.

In 1977, Italian director, horror film master, and all around mad-cinema genius Dario Argento terrified international audiences with his hauntingly brutal film, Suspiria. The film was dark, oddly psychedelic, and purportedly based on some rather loose but nonetheless true events that a relative of Argento’s mysteriously experienced in Europe. Told through the eye of an American dance student, the chilling film introduced audiences to the Italian brand of horror known as Giallo.

Suspiria: Dario Argento’s 1977 Horror Masterpiece

Rough in its definition, Giallo is an Italian sub-genre that incorporates horror, detective fiction, gore, supernatural elements, and psychological exploitation so as to craft as masterful a film as possible. For Argento at this time, it was about creating that surreal dreamworld inside a rather morbid reality. All of these sights played against a score composed entirely by the cultish progressive Italian rock band Goblin, and the nightmares were sure to come. Nearly forty-one years later, the film is being revisited with an exciting new cast and dedication to frighten all new first time viewers.

Suspiria Returns in 2018

Academy Award nominated director Luca Guadagnino, is looking to bring his best as the new film stars Dakota Johnson as Susie in the main role of an American ballet dancer who travels overseas to Europe in hopes of refining her delicate craft. However soon after her arrival, things don’t quite appear as normal as they should. A sequence of tragic events and nightmares has Susie believing that her ballet company is fronting for nothing more than a sinister coven of witches possibly headed by the company’s own Madame Blanc, played with eerie compassion by Academy Award winning actress, Tilda Swinton.

One of the key takeaways from the film’s many teasers and trailers is that Guadagnino, while looking to stick close to Argento’s source material in some ways, is almost entirely abandoning the paranoid color scheme that was captured so well in the 1977 film version. Guadagnino has said of his visuals for the film,

“My production designer Inbal Weinberg, my costume designer Giulia Piersanti and the director of photography Sayombhu Mukdeeprom went for browns and blacks and blues and greens, all muted and juxtaposed, so that we could in a way encompass this idea of a German Autumn. That’s why the colors are not primary. They do not pop at you. I hope that they infiltrate you and they go deep into you”.

As far as getting an approval from Argento on his finished product, Guadagnino said, “I can only say to you that after he saw it he called me, and it was a great call”.

Suspiria is set to hit theaters October 26, 2018.

Somewhere along Hollywood’s recent timeline, veteran actor Nicholas Cage appeared to have lost his way. The former Academy Award-winning actor slowed his film roles between 2008 and 2009, right before the IRS began a tax evasion investigation. All but written off and the center of some rather uncharitable internet memes, Nicholas Cage is now seeking to resurrect his former good name and he’s doing it while carrying a very large ax-sword-scythe combination while looking for unfortunate darkened souls. The film that is going to do this? Mandy.

The Plot of Mandy

Mandy starring Nicolas Cage

For the inner circle of horror fans, Mandy is a long-awaited film. Second time director and writer Panos Cosmatos, son of legendary director George P. Cosmatos, brings a very eclectic blend of horror, heavy metal, and psychedelic scenery to audiences everywhere. The logline? Set in 1983 near the Shadow Mountains of California, a man’s love interest is abducted by a sadistic supernatural cult of epic proportions and he vows a bloody and violent campaign to seek out vengeance by whatever means necessary. It’s also rumored to feature a thrilling chainsaw duel that will contain the largest chainsaw ever to be recorded on actual film.

Mandy Trailer

The trailer from the 2018 Sundance Film Festival highlights the supernatural creatures to look almost like the dreaded cenobites from the notorious Hellraiser film series. Add in fast and furious car chases and the film looks like a horror version akin to the great Mad Max: Fury Road. Such captivating visuals paired against the haunting and offbeat musical stylings of the late Academy Award-nominated composer Johann Johannsson give the film a bizarre 1980s noir vibe. For added texture and to complete the film experience, Cosmatos ensured heavy use of the Ari Alexa camera in traditional Panavision anamorphic format. Translation? The film will have the grainy visual style of a 1980s film.

Film buzz and sneak screenings for critics are at an all-time high for Mandy. Many are praising what they have seen of Nicholas Cage’s performance in the film and all but guaranteed this will be a grindhouse style bloodbath that many horror fans can’t wait to watch. With a VOD release in mid to late September 2018, Mandy is sure to be a fantastic choice to screen in a late night horror movie marathon. Viscerally dark, with almost netherworld inspired overtones, and phantasmagorically primal in supernatural violence, this film is a Neo-horror fan film delight.

Paranormal ghost hunter and television show creator Zak Bagans is a man who is on almost a never-ending quest to search for the truth.  This quest is popularized by his own television show, Ghost Adventures.  In creating the show, he hoped to find answers to questions and has said of his paranormal missions, “There are things in this world that we will never fully understand. We want answers. We have worked years to build our credibility; our reputation. Working alongside the most renowned professionals in the field; capturing ground-breaking proof of the paranormal.  This is our evidence”.

Having such a firm grasp on the pulse of the supernatural, it came as no surprise that when Bagans learned of the Ammons House haunting and exorcism of Gary, Indiana, he wanted to step up and investigate how genuine and terrifying it was. Taking his mission to new heights, he did something that was a paranormal first for himHe bought the actual Ammons House himself and chronicled it in a disturbing paranormal documentary, Demon House.

What happens in the Demon House?

Ammons Demon House

Latoya Ammons, along with her mother and three children, were horribly tormented by demons living in the new home in 2012. After months of battling the demons, as well as the authorities, the family ended up fleeing the home sometime in late 2013. This wasn’t before contacting local Catholic priest, Fr. Michael Maginot, who performed a spate of exorcisms.  While the exorcisms were proven effective, Latoya has refused to acknowledge or speak about what has gone on out of genuine fear of the demons in the house following her and her family.

Upon hearing this, Bagans purchased the house over the phone with a realtor in Gary, and a week later stepped foot on the premises for the first time ever with his crew.  Minutes into his tour of the home, Bagans was contacted by a psychic medium he knew over the phone who warns of a twelve-foot tall demon guardian that resides in the house and tells him to stay far away and leave.  Bagans remains committed and refused to leave.

To get more perspective on what truly happened in the house, Bagans does his best to pursue the whereabouts of Latoya and her family to interview them and inform them that he purchased the house.  Learning of a family apartment that Latoya resides in, he pursued the lead to discover she refuses to meet or speak with him about the house out of further fear that the demons there will terrorize them.

Latoya’s brother Kevin does, however, agree to speak with Bagans and tells him that children seemed to receive the brunt of the demon’s anger while in the house.  Bizarre ritualistic chanting, growling, and domestic violence was rampant.  After meeting with Bagans informally, Latoya kicked her own brother out of her new apartment over fears that after meeting with Bagans, the demons will find them and once again invade their lives.

Zac Bagans' Demon House

With more and more individuals refusing to speak with him, Bagans resorted to accessing police footage of the home after the Ammons initially fled.  He sought out a local police detective who had been in the home previously and agreed to go on camera with Bagans.  He alerts Bagans to an un-searched area of the home, under the basement steps to discover a patch of dirt flooring amidst a mostly concreted room.  Further discovery finds half melted and used candles that were likely associated with demonic rituals of some kind.   Short on more people willing to talk, as an instance of pure coincidence, a woman pulls up in a car by Bagans and tells him she was a former renter of the home before the Ammons family.

Bagans agrees to give the woman and her three teens a tour of the home to get a deeper perspective.  Giving her name as “Mica” she tells of strange noises and a sense of dread while living there.  She flat out refuses on camera to go down into the basement stating her brother used to live there with her and his room was in the basement and she had constant nightmares of his death.  Mica’s brother was shot and killed only months later after having the dreams.

Midway through the documentary, Bagans is able to locate DCS Investigator Valerie Washington who personally witnessed the demonic possession of the children. This included one of them walking backward up a hospital wall unassisted to a height of over twenty feet, before flipping straight off the ceiling.  She refuses to go near the house or meet Zak in person but agrees to a Skype session in which she informs him she no longer is in the area and had to leave due to the psychological trauma that she suffered and still has to receive therapeutic counseling for.

The Ammons Demon House

State of Indiana Intake Officer’s Report

Things soon began to unravel for Bagans in his documentary.  A crew member quits midway after being unable to handle the situation anymore.  To quell any skeptics, Bagans arranges for Dr. Barry Taff to check the geothermal activity around the house to prove there is nothing scientifically causing any hallucinations or unexplained activity in the house.   Using magnetic readings Dr. Taff discovers alarmingly high levels in the home.  Personally evaluating Bagans own body, Dr. Taff informs him that he’s giving off a magnetic reading of eight to twelve million times that of a normal human being.

Throughout the investigation, Taff experiences periods of dizziness and swaying.  After his visit, he’s hospitalized into intensive care after his major internal organs all simultaneously shut down.  Mica’s daughter, who visited Bagans earlier in the home attempts suicide.  To help Mica and her family, Bagans arranges for them to meet with Fr. Maginot and an on-camera exorcism is performed on her to free her soul from torment.

What happened to the Demon House?

To get to the bottom of everything once and for all, Bagans does something not recommended by his own crew, he accelerates the situation by literally boarding himself up within the house overnight.  Cameras placed in the home document his constant pacing and informal seances to manifest whatever is in the home.  Odd growls and wrappings instill a paranoia in Bagans who soon witnesses a black mass coming out of the wall from his own perspective and a painful stabbing sensation behind his eye sockets.  Dawn comes and Bagans rushes to a doctor to find out his eyes are crossed with double vision and he’s afflicted with a condition knows as diplopia.  Surgery is ruled out as it could cause permanent blindness, and instead, Bagans is forced to wear prism glasses as he’s informed that his eye condition is indeed permanent.

Ammons Demon House

In a final battle, Bagans hires a crew that totally demolishes the home as he cites to the camera that the home is cursed and he wants nobody else to become afflicted by it.  True to his love for the paranormal, Bagans keeps the basement stairs and buckets of dirt from the flooring as keepsakes to remind him just how real his mission truly was.

With the invention of the internet, reading about exploits and encounters with urban legends is more accessible than ever. But in 2009, the internet did something that had never been achieved in history, it created a terrifying supernatural monster slasher known as the Slender Man.

Who is the Slender Man?

The legend of Slender Man

One of Eric Knudsen’s photos of Slender Man

The Slender Man is the first ever supernatural entity created through the digital folklore of the internet. The origin of Slender Man began as an entry to a satirical website contest. The idea was to create a paranormal image that would terrify and be taken for a genuine and unexplained entity. A man by the name of Eric Knudsen submitted a picture of a towering, faceless being wearing a black suit surrounded by children in a black and white color setting.

The legend of Slender Man

One of Eric Knudsen’s photos of Slender Man

His limbs were long and cascading, holding outstretched hands with the children he planned to abduct. Knudsen pushed the idea that Slender Man was an abductor of children and was presumed to show up in photographs of soon to be abducted and murdered little victims. He has been quoted about his creation by saying he wanted to, “formulate something whose motivations can barely be comprehended, and cause unease and terror in a general population”. Inspirations for the character have been rumored to include Knudsen drawing from the literary works of H.P. Lovecraft as well.

Being less than ten years old in creation, the Slender Man has experienced a bit of mythical evolution at the hands of many fans online. Chief among his presence is the “Slender Sickness”. Whenever the Slender Man is nearby or semi-confrontational to his victims a dizzying paranoia and hallucinations appear, followed by nosebleeds. To elude authorities, teleportation is another ability exercised by the Slender Man. It is also said of the Slender Man, that he appears just before a large fire may break out, thus providing cover for his murderous ambitions.

The Slender Man Murders

The legend of Slender Man

True to life, the Slender Man was the inspirational source of a real-life brutal teenage murder attempt in Wisconsin during the 2014 summer. Two middle school girls lured a classmate into the woods with the intention to kill her as they feared being killed by the Slender Man himself if they did not complete the deed. The victim survived and the two teens were given multi-decade jail sentences in a state mental hospital. They still claim that they fear the Slender Man and urban legend believers validate their claims to be a product of the dreaded “Slender Sickness”.

To this day, the haunting online presence of the Slender Man continues to give nightmares and disturb those who dare to summon his being or become snared in his “Slender Sickness”. Unlike many nightmare monsters and legends, the Slender Man to date holds no open weakness or chronicled story of defeat. And that is what makes him truly terrifying.

The Slender Man Movie Trailer

With the popularity of the Slender Man story and the real-life murders associated with it, you know Hollywood wasn’t going to pass this one up.

In early August 1969 deep within the heart of Beverly Hills, California, criminal mastermind and burgeoning cult leader Charles Manson directed the killing of five people. The victims were all associated in one form or another with the Hollywood filmmaking scene. But what truly happened in that house and what are the effects lasting to the present day?

Charles Manson and the Manson Family

Born Charles Maddox in 1934, “Charles” as he was known to most familiars, was a petty thief and sexual deviant. A series of short prison stints for his offenses eventually had him released and he landed in San Francisco 1967. He soon met up with a graduate student and moved in, only to insist she bring women to stay with them. Manson begins a system of recruiting and entrancing young college-aged women with his bizarre philosophical rhetoric and charismatic speech. Primarily, he used a lot of material he got from the Process Church of the Final Judgment. This was a non-denominational, religious fringe group promoting a core message that Satan would eventually come to rule and judge humanity alongside Jesus Christ.

Few months began to pass and Manson had many female admirers with numbers growing to a point where he referred to them reverently as “the Manson Family”. Before long, Manson acquired a dilapidated bus and rode up and down the Pacific coast looking for drugs and opportunity with his newly formed family.

Charles Manson and the Sharon Tate Murder

Members of the Manson Family Cult

The bus eventually landed in Los Angeles, and Manson began to recruit even more women to his sect. Right there in Los Angeles, singer and songwriter of the popular group the Beach Boys, Dennis Wilson, made an uninformed decision one evening to pick up two hitchhikers, named Patricia Krenwinkel and Ella Jo Bailey. Unbeknownst to Wilson, the two were Manson Family members and he brought them back to his home to have a place to stay for the evening.

While going out for a late night recording session, he returned home to find Charles Manson in his driveway after the two women had called to have him pick them up. Initially scared, Wilson was ultimately won over by Manson’s charisma and phrases. Before long, Wilson had not only paid Manson to help write some lyrics for songs but began introducing him to various entertainment industry people.

During this time, Manson found a competent and bloodthirsty lieutenant named Tex Watson. He became associated with Manson after some run-ins with Manson Family members in town. However, across town, a lovestruck couple named Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski were renting a house at 10050 Cielo Drive. The comely actress and talented director were making headway in the motion picture industry even with Tate being nearly eight months pregnant with Polanski’s child. Despite Manson’s popular rounds in Hollywood, he was unassociated with Tate and Polanski.

Campaigning for a lucrative record deal to pump more money into his influential cult, Manson was spurned by a record producer named Terry Melcher and was not given one. Furious at the outcome of this, Manson selected his followers carefully in Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel. Their order by Manson? To kill the occupant of 10050 Cielo Drive who at the time Manson believed to be Melcher. Unbeknownst to Manson, Melcher had moved and rented the home to Polanski and Tate.

The Manson Family Murders

On August 9, 1969, the Manson Family descended upon the home with the intent to kill Melcher but instead found actress Sharon Tate and her friends from show business. Jay Sebring a hairdresser, screenplay writer Wojciech Frykowski and coffee heiress Abagail Folger. Accounts to the murders have varied in all sorts of details over the years. Watson broke in the door and was face to face with Frykowski, and he reportedly told him, “I am the Devil. And I am here to do the Devil’s business”.

CHarles Manson and the Sharon Tate Murder

Panic and pandemonium set in for Tate and her friends as she and Jay Sebring were reportedly tied with ropes around their necks and taunted with being hanged. As Tate struggled against her attackers, she was beaten. Sebring protested the beating due to Tate being pregnant and was shot point blank range in the face by Watson. Frykowski and Abigail Folger were held down and stabbed a combined total of seventy-nine times.

Charles Manson and the Sharon Tate Murder

Sharon Tate with Roman Polanski

Tate was the last victim left alive as Frykowski and Folger succumbed to their injuries. She pleaded for mercy with the attackers as she was only two weeks away from giving birth. Her pleas went unaccepted as she was stabbed sixteen times to the back, chest, and abdomen while she cried out for her own mother to save her. Once dead, Susan Atkins stepped forward to sop up Tate’s blood and scrawled the word “pig” on the door.

Hollywood was left shaken and distressed at the murders. Manson and his members committed more murders and crimes of every sort, they were all arrested and given lengthy life sentences in prison soon after the Tate murder.  Manson died in prison in November 2017 from complications from colon cancer.

Manson’s Return to Hollywood

A Hollywood talent manager named Rudolph Altobelli bought the home and claimed to live in it another twenty plus years with no issues. Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor rented the home to create a new studio album, staying in it only a month claiming, “there’s just too much history in that house for me to handle”. Reznor vacated staying only one year. In 1994 a new owner stepped forward and had the home demolished only to build a new one over the cleared land. A new address of 10066 Cielo Drive was given to the property. Paranormal activity goes on to this day, not on the Tate property itself, but 147 feet away and the much haunted and active Oman House that is said to contain the ghosts of Sharon Tate and her friends.

Tarantino's Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Damon Herriman is set to play Manson in Once Apon A Time In Hollywood

What is the Eyebot App?

Augmented reality. Bluetooth enabled and interactive. Haunt enhancement. In our opinion, the Eyebot App is a great way to entertain guests in the line. But it goes much further than that. We caught up with Bill McCoy, the Eyebot App’s creator, at Transworld.

Eyebot is an augmented reality-based app that lets it’s users find scary things on their phone while visiting your haunt. It uses image recognition as well as Bluetooth transmission beacons to detect ghosts and ghouls right on your customer’s phone.  The guest simply uses the app to scan images that you put wherever you want and the creature comes to life on their phone. Or you can purchase beacon devices that use Bluetooth to carry an image straight to someone’s smartphone.

How do I use the Eyebot App in my haunt?

Eyebot App - Augmented Reality Haunt Enhancement

Using the Eyebot App in your haunt is easier and cheaper than you think. Follow these steps and you’re on your way:

The possibilities of when and where to plant the beacons and which characters to use can create a truly unique experience that can be changed just as often as moving a beacon and merely uploading a different horror character to that spot.

The Eyebot app adds an entirely new experience to your haunt guests that will keep them coming back year after year.

The night has always been a fearful time. It’s too dark to see anything clearly so the mind starts playing tricks, showing us threats in every dark corner. This fear of the dark is only amplified by stories of teenagers going off into the woods to later be found brutally murdered. Stories of witches chanting and sacrificing small animals around a roaring fire, cursing towns and people without mercy. The night is believed to bring out the evil and sin of the world and, as the saying goes, it’s always darkest before the dawn.

When is the Witching Hour?

Whether you believe the ancient folktales or the new modern alternative on when the Devil’s hour takes place, both have one thing in common: the belief that the night holds unspeakable horrors. Folktales would suggest that the Devil’s hour takes place when 3 AM turns to 4 AM while more modern pieces of horror have stretched the time from midnight to 3 AM.

What is the Devil’s Hour?

The Devil’s Hour, which has also been referred to as the witching hour, was given this eerie title because of the belief that at this point of the night demons, ghosts, witches, and the Devil himself are at their most powerful. It is quite common for supernatural events to take place at 3 AM. A famous example is The Conjuring story where all the clocks in The Conjuring House stopped at exactly 3 AM every night.

Various folktales suggest that at this time of night dreams are no longer a part of our subconscious but rather a way of communicating with the other side. These were considered cautionary tales since you never knew what would come back to the waking world with you.

Why is 3 AM known as the Witching or Devil’s Hour?

The Witching Hour

But why 3 AM specifically? It is believed that Jesus was crucified at 3 PM in the afternoon so, in an attempt to mock the Holy Trinity and the sacrifice of Jesus, 3 AM was designated as the polar opposite. The ultimate evil taunting the ultimate good by taking its opposite. This can also be seen in the flipping of a cross or hearing three unexplainable knocks in the dead of night. Western Christianity believes that the night is the most sinful part of the natural day as well. In the Gospel of John, there is a line that suggests that the light will reveal sin so those who do evil stay in the shadows and out of the light of day.

Christians also believed night to be full of supernatural dangers due to the absence of prayers. Constant praying would ensure constant safety but since we all have to sleep sometimes, the night was deemed most dangerous. This menacing idea of the night married to the superstition that black magic was the most effective at 3 AM springboarded the paranoia that any woman caught wandering around late at night without a sufficient reason must be guilty of witchcraft. These events also birthed the term “Witching Hour”.

Explanation of the Devil’s Hour

Biologically, around 3 AM is when the body goes into the deepest cycle of sleep, REM sleep. Within this stage of rest the blood moves slowly, the heart beats lethargically, and dreams become vivid. If a person wakes up before the REM cycle is complete, the terrifying experience of sleep paralysis can occur. To ensure that a person doesn’t act out their dreams or wander about and get themselves hurt, the body puts itself into a state of paralysis.

The Witching Hour and Sleep Paralysis

When the mind realizes it can’t move, it begins to panic which makes the situation that much worse. Many people see dark, menacing figures since the adrenaline-soaked brain can’t help but see threats in the shadows. Before such a thing as sleep paralysis became a known and studied phenomenon, these experiences were thought to be the work of the Devil or witches or even attempted possession.

Film writer and director Quentin Tarantino is celebrated as one of the most daring and critically acclaimed filmmakers in recent cinema history. Having made only ten full-length feature films, he has been established by studio critics and fans alike as the “must-see his movie” director. It is with much fanfare that his eleventh studio film would be based on a true crime story, deep in his own Hollywood backyard. A film semi-based around the infamous Manson Family murders of 1969.

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio

Titled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the film is set to star three of Hollywood’s most exciting A-list actors. Leonard DiCaprio and Brad Pitt take on the mysterious roles of a failed television Western star and his longtime stunt double. Early leaked storylines suggest that the pair are down on their luck and having trouble landing roles in Hollywood and hope to turn around their situation by involving a most famous next-door neighbor, actress Sharon Tate. Academy Award nominated actress and DC Comic fanboy crush, Margot Robbie will be playing the role of Tate.

Tarantino has found his Manson

After half of Hollywood have been pining for the role of cult leader Charles Manson, Tarantino has finally found his man. Mostly unknown Australian actor Damon Herriman (FX’s Justified) will play the part of Charles Manson. Of course, you never know how large of a part the cult leader will play in the movie, it’s for certain that it will be a memorable one. It doesn’t hurt that Damon holds an uncanny resemblance to the Manson Family Dad.

Tarantino and Sony Pictures has recently had to backtrack some preconceived notions that the film is purely based on the Manson Family murders. Ever the outspoken and candid individual, Tarantino has insisted that the film deals “directly with the events of 1969”. Not saying much more than that and given the details on the top star casting, it is safe to say that the horrific Tate Murders will be showcased in the film in one Tarantino-style way or another. Given, like in Inglourious Basterds, that he likes to bend historical events, it cannot be said with absolute certainty just what Tate’s fate will hold until the film’s release.

Casting and release date for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood

Other top cast and crew members include veteran actor Burt Reynolds, Academy Award winner Al Pacino, Dakota Fanning, Emile Hirsch and producer Damian Lewis. While no casting sheet has been made publicly available, the buzz is strong that the film will also star a gaggle of Tarantino film veteran actors. Rumor has it we may see Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Kurt Russell, Zoe Bell, James Remar, and the ever-popular Samuel L. Jackson cast in the perfect Tarantino blend of fictional and real characters.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is due to be released July 26, 2019.

Black Bear Decides to Visit The Shining Hotel

A curious Stephen King fan decided to check out the hotel known as “The Shining Hotel,” aka The Stanley Hotel.  Ghosts are not the only thing you might be wary of when staying at the iconic Stanley Hotel. Recently a very sizable black bear decided to pay a visit during the wee hours of the morning when most guests were asleep. This black bear must have been curious about Room 237 because he opened the door and strolled right into the lobby. After taking a break and enjoying the hotel lobby furniture, he changed his mind and wandered back out the door. It was obvious he wasn’t getting a room. The bear was heard saying, “I don’t see why Stephen King was so excited about this place. I’m out!”

The 1909 Stanley Hotel is famous for having been the inspiration for Stephen King’s horror blockbuster, The Shining. Each year thousands of King fans descend on the hotel to experience the renowned hotel that inspired the novel, film, and mini-series. The hotel also has many ghost stories aside from King, with a fantastic history of paranormal activity and reported ghost sightings to boot.

In late April 2012, an anonymous phone call was placed to Indiana’s Department of Children’s Services in which claims of neglect and child abuse were reported against a Gary, Indiana woman named Latoya Ammons. DCS Case Manager Valerie Washington was assigned to investigate the claims reported, but nothing in her training was about to prepare her for the demonic activity to come.

History of the Ammons House Hauntings

Beginning six months prior in November 2011, Latoya Ammons, a single mother of three children, along with her mother Rosa Campbell, moved into a small and nearly one-hundred-year-old house on Gary’s southeastern side city limits. In similar fashion to the Amityville Horror, the Ammons troubles began when they moved into the home and found it was infested with swarms of black flies. Weeks passed as attempts were made to properly fumigate when the children reported seeing a shadow man moving between the bedrooms. Shoe prints from an oversized boot were soon found throughout the home.

The Ammons Demon House

As the months began to pass into 2012, mounting tension grew within the house. Fighting and destructive behavior began to occur frequently among the children. No room in the home was truly free from the constant noises caused by the children. In the basement, a dirt floor was discovered under the stairs, but that was not enough to sway Latoya and her mother from putting the washer and dryer for the household laundry down there. Mounting cold spots were known to form at an instant and then dissipate in the basement along with the rest of the home.

To combat the feelings of constant negativity, the Ammons family turned to nearby Protestant clergymen to come to the house for a blessing. Upon the finished blessing, the activity increased to a continuous loud bang, dark shadows prowling the home, and the children brutalizing one another. Police were dispatched to the home often for noise complaints, and Gary Police Captain Charles Austin, a hardened twenty plus year veteran of the force, was so shaken after one visit to the home, he refrained from further visits unless accompanied by more officers.

State of Indiana Intake Officer’s Report

Late April 2012, is when the call for help was made to the outside world. DCS Case Manager Washington was briefed on the case after Latoya had taken the children to their pediatrician in a weak attempt to diagnose their increasingly violent behaviors. The doctor, in turn, referred them to the local emergency room after it was reported that objects at the doctor’s office briefly levitated and were thrown against walls by an unseen force. Immediately they were taken to the local emergency room, and doctors quickly assessed the children and placed them in a psychiatric wing right there at Northlake Hospital.

While interviewing the children separately, a nurse, hospital official, and Washington herself all personally witnessed loud and aggressive growls from the middle child in particular. The other two children were reported to have unnaturally deep voices and bulging eyes within their sockets. Unfazed by the attempted psychological assessment and medical intervention, all three adults then personally witnessed the middle child walk upright unassisted against a hospital wall up to the ceiling and then backflip down behind them at a height of an estimated twenty feet!

State of Indiana Intake Officer’s Report

After a dizzying weekend of analyzation, medication, and mental therapies of all kinds given to Latoya, her mother, and all three children, the hospital and DCS Case Manager Washington found absolutely no evidence of abuse or mental handicap of any kind. Desperate for any answer as financial obstacle prevented her from moving to a different home, Latoya then chose to reach out to the local psychic community for clues to her ever-worsening situation. An anonymous clairvoyant visited the home, and despite burning sage and covering doorways in blessed oils, they ended up leaving and informing Latoya they could feel the presence of over two hundred demons occupying the home!

Zak Bagans goes to the Ammons House

Local news stations picked up on haunted home and stories about the situation went viral. It was not long before help arrived in the form of Father Michael Maginot, a local Catholic exorcist. Father Maginot of St. Stephen, the Martyr Church, had been tipped off by the Northlake Hospital chaplain who explained the dire situation troubling the Ammons family. After a somewhat minor blessing of the children and the home, Father Maginot gained approval for a full exorcism with permission from Bishop Dale Melczeck in June 2012. Collectively it took three full exorcisms to free Latoya and the children from the evil that had taken over their lives.

Wishing to start their lives over and away from the house, Latoya ended up leaving the home. It was purchased by another family who reported no further demonic activity. In early 2014, the unnamed owners sold the house for $35,000 to paranormal expert, Ghost Adventures host, Zak Bagans. Purchasing the home with the intent to discover and expose the notorious paranormal activity, it ended up being displayed in a highly controversial documentary, Demon House.
