Elizabeth Moss stars as hapless Cecilia, a domestic violence victim of her ruthless boyfriend Adrian. When she leaves for a new life of freedom, strange things begin to happen in her new environment. Is it Adrian? A ghost? Smartly acted and well-paced, The Invisible Man (2020) is worth the hype.

The Hunt

Twelve complete strangers wake up in a creepy forest with no knowledge of how they got there or why exactly they are there. The group soon founds out that they are being hunted down by wealthy elitists in a bloodthirsty sporting contest. Violent and chaotic, the film has garnered a lot of attention for its highly controversial image of just what “deplorable” are.

You Should Have Left

Based on the 2017 novel by German psychological thrill writer Daniel Kehlmann, You Should Have Left welcomes back into the horror foray everyone’s favorite character actor, Kevin Bacon. Starring alongside Bacon is veteran horror actress Amanda Seyfried, together they play a married couple whose relationship is on the rocks. Taking a vacation in the Welsh countryside to sort out their lives, they soon found out the house they’re staying in could be hiding nightmarish levels of evil at frightening proportions.

Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island

An updated horror version of the popular 70s television show, Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island presents itself as a total dream, but ends up being a nightmare for those who visit. Guests only think they’re spending a week at a luxury resort run by the enigmatic Mr. Roarke, played brilliantly by actor Michael Peña. They soon find out things are more a blood-soaked reality than lavish fantasy and find themselves banding together to solve the mysterious and murderous ways of the island.

Freaky

If you’re looking for the horror subgenre of serial killing body-switching horror comedies, then directory Christopher Landon’s Freaky is just for you. Actor Vince Vaugh stars as The Butcher, a ruthless serial killer who ends up switching bodies with a seventeen-year-old girl whom he tried to kill using a magical dagger. Together, they fight against both fate and time in trying to reverse the switch, or else it becomes permanent.

Gretel & Hansel

No doubt the darkest take on one of the Brothers Grimm’s most violent works, Gretel & Hansel is a twisted take on the supposed, children’s fairy tale. When siblings Gretel and Hansel find themselves starving deep in the Bavarian woods, they find refuge with a sickeningly disturbed witch who has no trouble serving them up a feast, all in preparation for something even more murderous. A visually dark fairy tale, Gretel & Hansel delivers the horror goods.

Antebellum

A total mind-bending time travel horror film, Antebellum brings about a sinister view when it comes to Southern hospitality. The film stars Janelle Monae as a troubled author who must race against all odds to free slaves from their doomed lives on a violent Southern plantation. A provocative horror thriller, Antebellum is not an easy horror film to watch; there will be nightmares.

Wrong Turn (2020)

A remake of the popular Wrong Turn franchise original, this scare happy film is a retelling of one of horror’s most favored tropes; a group of teens lost in the backwoods who are hunted down by bloodthirsty cannibals. If that plotline doesn’t excite your horror bones, nothing will. Brutal and unforgiving in its kill scenes, Wrong Turn (2020) has one of the more favorable horror film reviews from critics in all of 2020.

Brahms: The Boy II

Creepy sequel to 2016’s surprise horror hit, The Boy, Brahms: The Boy II wastes no time in ratcheting up the scare factor. Directed by William Brent Bell, creator of the original film, the sequel shows just what happens when a boy befriends a lifelike doll after a tragic accident. Spell

One of the more original horror concepts in some time, Spell stars Omar Hardwick as Marquis, a troubled man trying to fly out to a family funeral. Once the plane crashes, Marquis finds himself not in a hospital bed, but is instead trapped in the dingy old attic of an old woman who is relying on…pieces…of his body to help offer up a bloody voodoo ritual spell. Why 12 Hours When You Can Have The Forever Purge?

Dystopian action horror film franchise The Purge is looking to conclude its eight-year theatrical series run by finishing off its bloody pentalogy with the most violently satisfying entry yet, deemed The Forever Purge.

Intended to be just a standalone film in 2013, the series’s first entry, The Purge, was a box office hit with action horror fans. Made from a paltry $3 million dollar budget, the film ended up grossing $90 million worldwide and along with movie critics praising the film for its originality, the producers at Blumhouse Productions instantly knew that there could be more sequels and possible franchise out of the film’s concept.

The Forever Purge Plot

For those unfamiliar, the film’s central plot centers around a modern and thriving society where just one night a year for twelve hours, all crime is completely legal….including murder. Low-category class weaponry is used by individuals to hack, slash, steal, plunder, smash, and kill virtually anyone without any judicial repercussions whatsoever. The gruesome and dystopian theme struck a powerful chord with action horror fans who long wondered, what would happen if the Purge lasted longer than twelve hours? Enter The Forever Purge.

The plot to this fifth installment plays out from the title itself, wondering if one night is ever enough. Building off from The Purge: Election Year, the ruling politicians have officially ended the annual purge night….or did they? Purge series creator and writer James DeMonaco team up with eclectic filmmaker and director Everado Gout to bring about the most satisfying conclusion to this bloody series. With some plot details still kept under wraps, the film centers around a couple fleeing from a murderous Mexican drug cartel. Hiding out in what they think is safe haven refuge at a Texas ranch, the couple soon finds out that there is a contingent of deranged people who are refusing to acknowledge the ending of the annual purge and vow to continue the murder rampage….forever!

Telenovela soap star, Ana de la Reguera has been cast to star in the film alongside one of Mexico’s busiest actors, Tenoch Huerta. Rounding out the flavorful cast is longtime actor Josh Lucas, television star Cassidy Freeman, and horror character actor Will Patton.

Purge Release Date and Trailer

COVID-19 interrupted the initial film release to theaters which was originally slated for the early summer of 2020. With a largely vaccinated world now, the film’s distributors fully intend on releasing this all-out violent film in movie theaters this summer, and a new release date of July 2, 2021 has been set.

American Horror Story: Double Feature

American Horror Story….known in social media circles simply as AHS to all the fans, is gearing up on production for what will be their tenth and most anticipated season on the cable channel FX. To celebrate, they’re going all out with their casting by enlisting in the acting presences of none other than Paris Jackson and former child star sensation Macauley Culkin.

Paris Jackson Joins AHS

You read that right horror fans. Series creator and longtime showrunner Ryan Murphy has indeed brought a most newsworthy buzz to the upcoming season. For those unfamiliar and not, Paris Jackson is the only daughter of the most multitalented and enigmatic music entertainer ever….Michael Jackson. Jackson himself was no stranger to horror mediums as he portrayed both a werewolf and zombie in one of the most talked-about music videos ever made, Thriller.

Perhaps the horror acting bug caught up to Paris because she herself also had acting roles of the terrifyingly transgressive kind in feature film Habit, as well as a role on MTV’s horror show, Scream: The Series. As with anything AHS or Ryan Murphy related (such as Netflix’s upcoming serial killer doc “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) details on just exactly who….or what….she might be playing has been kept under the tightest of plot wraps.

No, AHS Isn’t Going All Home Alone

Macauley Culkin himself perhaps needs no introduction. A child star of the late 1980s and early 1990s, Culkin launched to international superstardom with the Home Alone series. Soon after he finished out his on-screen career with a role as the disturbingly sick and twisted adolescent in The Good Son. Since then, Culkin has taken to hosting duties on his highly popular Bunny Ears podcast where pop culture trivia of all types is encouraged. Given his acting chops and experience, he should be no stranger to whatever wicked storylines get thrown his way in AHS.

As far as what the hotly anticipated tenth season will be about or unveil its theme, naturally, there is little that can be revealed in the interest of not wrecking everything with spoilers. Ryan Murphy did take to Instagram recently to announce that the name of the newest season will in fact be titled, Double Feature. Mercilessly teasing AHS fans, even more, Murphy did go on to say that the season will feature two completely different themes. The first half of the season will be centered “on the sea.” The second half of the season is said to take place, “on the sand.”

Dexter Is Getting Back To Nature And Showtime

“There really is nothing like getting back to nature. My nature.”

These are the first words that everyone’s favorite serial killer, Dexter Morgan, has uttered in over eight long years, and somehow we simply cannot get enough of hearing them.

In case you’ve been living under netherworld rock these past six months and have not heard the good word, the uber-premium cable network Showtime has revived its hottest tv show property ever in Dexter for another season. That’s right, the Miami serial killer known infamously as the “Bay Harbor Butcher”, did not disappear into the Pacific Northwest with chilling finality once Season 8 ended in 2013. For years fans of the show criticized just how the series ended with a lot of uninspiring tie-ups. To counter this near-decade-long grudge, Showtime has made good on giving Dexter another season to help presumably finish out his serial killing saga.

In the latest teaser to drop this week, horror social media outlets and circles have been positively abuzz with grim sublimity over what they may see when the most anticipated horror series ever returns in the late fall of 2021. Breaking down the trailer of course, the dark snowscape could indeed hint that Dexter really did disappear to the mountain areas of the Pacific Northwest, just as far away from Miami, Florida as he could get, and for legal reasons obviously. Added to the snow imagery is that of a giant ax that’s become lodged firmly into a tree stump as a raging campfire lights the background. This also helps perpetuate the fan theory that when Dexter was last seen eight years ago, he took a job as a lumberjack. But about that ax though…….

Many longtime fans of the series will recall that more often than not, Dexter’s weapon of choice was a gigantic butcher knife. But with the lumberjack imagery flowing, horror fans are already agog at the possibilities of Dexter taking out a few bad guys with that very ax!

Dexter Season 9 Cast

Since the info drop from Showtime that there would be a ninth season (though they never said it’s the last….) there have been other casting developments to behold. Perennial movie and tv bad guy character actor Clancy Brown has been unveiled as this season’s “big bad” as he portrays a man named Kurt Caldwell, a quite vicious and evil man who terrorizes a presumably fictional small town dubbed Iron Lakes. Don’t let that tight-lipped and vague description fool you, actor Michael C. Hall who portrays Dexter recently confided in an interview that this season’s story arc in Dexter was one worth telling.

“I was pleasantly surprised that a story emerged that felt worth telling. I wasn’t surprised that it came back in that there’s been an appetite for it, both from some fans, but also from the network. Oh, he didn’t die, let’s do more, let’s find out what happened to him. But I think the surprise was that a story emerged that felt worth telling”.

Jeffrey Dahmer Comes To Netflix: What We Know

Netflix is just about the best in the business when it comes to not only streaming award-winning films and television series but also cultivating its most popular genres across their platform to bring you the very best in desired content. It’s no surprise that true crime horror is one of the hottest properties on Netflix, so what does the streaming monolith have in store for subscribers? How about a true-crime series on the lifetime slayings of notorious American serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Here are five things you need to know about Netflix’s Monster:

Jeffrey Dahmer Series Gets a Name

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story will be the official title of this new Netflix series and early reports having it debuting and ready to stream everywhere in late 2021/early 2022.

Veteran Television Actor Evan Peters To Star

When it comes to playing the titular role of Dahmer himself, it’s best to employ a horror actor already in the acting mindset of regularly doing evil onscreen so the translation to characters is more highly nuanced and less plodding. Enter longtime American Horror Story actor and WandaVision superhero, Evan Peters, who not only has been the first actor cast in Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, but he is also set to play the cannibalistic killer himself.

Rounding out the cast at this moment in specified roles also includes Academy Award nominee Richard Jenkins who will portray Dahmer’s father, Lionel. Veteran character actress Penelope Ann Miller is also set to co-star as Dahmer’s mother, Joyce. Emmy Award winner Niecy Nash rounds out the cast at the moment in an unspecified role.

American Horror Story Creator On-Board

With such a sizable series that will chronicle the murderous exploits of “the Milwaukee Monster”, veteran horror story experience was a must. Netflix is turning over the creative reigns of the production to none other than the American Horror Story creator himself, Ryan Murphy. Given the lengthy production history between Evans and Murphy, it will be fascinating to see their take on what prompted the real-life cannibal to slaughter and eat seventeen men over a thirteen-year period.

Not Your Average Serial Killer Series

There are many streaming series and shows with serial killers that follow a ground-up, origin story. For Monster, Murphy is taking a vastly different approach as the show will take the unorthodox approach of re-telling Dahmer’s murderous exploits from a point of view from his victims. If anything the series aims to be firmly entrenched in psychological horror, rather than just straight horror itself.

Dahmer And White Privilege

One of the more interesting theories being used in the show will be examining the instances where Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested or at least held by police at different times during his killing sprees, only to be ultimately released. The aura of white privilege will be confronted and examined in detail as it will chronicle just how, “a clean-cut, good-looking white guy” accused of murder, cannibalism, and necrophilia was somehow never charged in ten court cases.

Missing persons, serial killers, demonic activity, and even mind-bending realities. No those aren’t fixtures in a new horror film, instead, they’re commonplace in one of the most haunted Hollywood spots in all of Los Angeles…..The Cecil Hotel. A place so popular amongst horror and true crime fans, that even stylish fright shows such as American Horror Story and the streaming giant Netflix have dabbled in its legend. Wanna get caught up in some true horror history?

Crime Scene: Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

Most media pundits and critics today agree that you haven’t made the big time….unless you’re on Netflix. The streaming zenith is home to just about every television series, movie, and documentary known to man and it came as no surprise that in February 2021 it debuted it’s latest talked-about hit. Famous documentary series director Joe Berlinger brought to life a new series entitled, Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. Berlinger is no stranger to the true-crime macabre as his earlier Netflix show’s on, Jeffery Epstein and Ted Bundy, were massive hits with fans and critics alike.

In Crime Scene, Berlinger directed four, one hour long shows documenting the sordid and bloody history of the Cecil Hotel, serving as a backdrop to the series’s focused crime. Doctors, authors, detectives, former employees, and everyone in between, Berlinger leaves no stone unturned. Centering primarily around the disappearance of Elisa Lam, each episode is interlinked and immediately worthy of a must-do binge watch on the whole series to discover just exactly what caused perhaps one of the most puzzling personal disappearances in Los Angeles crime history.

Cecil Hotel’s Serial Killer Resident

Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker

The Cecil Hotel was known to have some of the lowest daily or weekly rates of any hotel in the area, along with a no-questions-asked sort of registration policy. Terrorizing L.A. residents on a rape and murder spree during the summer of 1985 was a young derelict named Richard Ramirez. Dubbed the “Night Stalker” by the media, his penchant for blood and Satanism knew no limits as he murdered his way into the night while lounging and sleeping off his horrendous crimes during the day at the Cecil. Ramirez often stayed on the 14th floor and while he never brought any victims in or killed on-site, people remember his behavior as low key and unassuming. A total contrast to his bloodthirsty murder sprees he’d engage in before sleeping it off to do all over again.

Jack Unterweger: The Vienna Woods Killer

The Vienna Woods Killer, Jack Unterweger as was a resident of the Cecil Hotel. Also known by Austrian media as the “Poet of Death” for his exceptional writing skills while in prison or on trial, Unterweger was working for an Austrian true-crime publication that sent him to L.A. in 1991. The murderer of at least ten sex workers and possibly more, the belief among true-crime theorists is Unterweger vehemently explored the seedy L.A. underworld of prostitution and used the Cecil Hotel as a home base to retire too and sharpen his deadly ambitions.

The Elisa Lam Mystery

“You’re always haunted by the idea you’re wasting your life.”

A quote from Elisa Lam’s favorite author Chuck Palahniuk, the 21-year-old Canadian University student tragically would find herself wasting her own life right there in the Cecil Hotel. Lam was on a trip to California from the British Columbia area in late January 2003 and chose to stay at the Cecil Hotel, likely due to the affordability. Little did she know she’d be dead five days later. Going out to explore L.A. is something she dreamed of and wrote about in her social media Tumblr blog (which is still online and can be found here: https://nouvelle-nouveau.tumblr.com/archive/filter-by/text and read in its haunting entirety). Renting initially a shared room, Lam’s roommate requests she be moved due to her erratic behavior.

Lam was eventually relocated on the 14th floor (the Night Stalker’s former floor) and spent time exploring bookstores in the L.A. area while making sure to call her family every night. January 31, 2013, Elisa disappears, her family then reaches out to the police. A thorough missing person investigation is launched with little to go on as everything led to a dead-end for investigators. By February 15, 2013, investigators discovered a surveillance video in the hotel’s elevator which showed a panicked Lam hiding inside the elevator. Peeking out to check if the hallway is clear, she appears to be running from someone….or something. Lam exits the elevator and is never seen again.

On February 19, 2013, guests at the Cecil complained to maintenance manager Santiago Lopez about the taste and color of the hotel’s water. Lopez bridged the roof and breached one of the hotel’s four water supply tanks to discover Lam’s naked, and bloated corpse floating face up in the water supply. The police drained and cut through the tank to pull her body out. How could a smaller woman escape to a reclusive and hard-to-reach portion of the hotel’s roof without a ladder? How did she alternately lift the 100 lbs hatch lid and then close it from the inside? Police were dumbstruck by the scene and chalked her death up to a simple drowning. Eerily enough Lam’s phone was never found, but that didn’t stop her Tumblr posts from posting even after her death!

Spiritual Portal?

In recent years, the Cecil Hotel has absolutely been one of the most popular true-crime horror destinations in the area. Elisa Lam’s death has attracted throngs of attention, and one of the more interesting theories is her frantic button-pushing in the elevator on the day of her disappearance was not as it appeared. Theorists believe she was engaging in an East Asian paranormal act dubbed the Elevator Game. It’s a maddening button push game in which someone goes in an elevator and must go in between, up and down floors in a certain pattern, while never exiting the actual elevator. If done properly, the last floor reached will open up not to our reality, but instead to an ethereal otherworld dimension. People report seeing a woman with a red cross on her chest who somehow helps answer your questions, while others claim that they’re relentlessly pursued by a female demon who aspires for nothing more than collecting your soul before you can reverse the process in the same elevator. The consensus among these theorists is that Elisa played the Elevator Game, and permanently lost.

American Horror Story Gets Involved

Uber popular horror anthology recently took a stab at shooting some scenes for their show at the Cecil. Showrunner Ryan Murphy is a self-confessed fan of the Cecil Hotel, so much so that he incorporated season five’s theme of a hotel in the “Hotel Cortez” where guests check-in and go missing…..straight from Cecil’s history, a mix between the true life Cecil and H.H. Holmes Murder Castle in Chicago. Not to be outdone in the area of just missing guests, Murphy crafted perhaps the most terrifying episode in all of AHS history with the infamous “Devil’s Night” episode in which a recreated portrayal of the Night Stalker himself, Richard Ramirez, is featured on the show.

The long and sordid history of the Cecil Hotel is one that is of a living legend in the true-crime paranormal world……and the vacancies are currently open.

Best Pandemic Outbreak Movies To Watch

Got those quarantine blues? Is a trip to the supermarket just hell on earth this time of day? Every other store boarded up and closed? Staying home is all anyone knows right now and it’s no surprise that streaming service use is at an all-time high. For us horror fans and our own deranged mental health salvation, we’re not afraid to watch even the craziest and most terrifying outbreak survival movies in the midst of a real-life plague to entertain us right now because…..well….we’re horror fans!

Here’s A List Of The Best Pandemic Outbreak Movies That You Should Be Watching:

The Mist

This one falls under “Supermarket Monster Doomsday Prophet Films”, and it’s a good one. Only from the mind of Stephen King is such a story like this even conceivable as it centers around a few dozen people trapped within the walls of a local grocery store as hideously shaped bloodthirsty monsters stalk their prey from deep within the mist that encircles the store outside. Doomsday sayers begin to furiously multiply inside the store forcing the heroes to decide which is worse: being eaten alive by Cthulhu-esque monsters on the outside or ritually sacrificed on aisle seven on the inside. On your next grocery trip if the parking lot is covered in a mist, then just keep on driving by!

Train To Busan

Nominated for a slew of Asian Film Awards (our Oscar equivalent), Train To Busan is a zombie pandemic film on steroids. The South Korean military can’t contain a virus that turns its helpless citizens into fast and bloody furious zombies. Film proof that quarantine zones don’t work, this horror crowd-pleaser centers upon a trainload of passengers who go from train car to train car using any and all makeshift weapons (along with tae kwon do) to beat back the zombie plague. Surprisingly dramatic and even tearful at times, Train To Busan is a real crowd pleaser and will teach you the finer points of meaty, ground and pound fist attacks to repel zombies. Ya know…..just in case you’re ever on a train….with zombies…..in South Korea.

Rec/Quarantine

The best thing about a film like Rec is that you get a wonderfully transgressive point of view about the infected and highly murderous tenants of a Spanish apartment building. It’s filmed in an almost faux-documentary style capacity as you go deeper and deeper into the dark claustrophobic confines of the seedy building (including a trip to the sewers). For those not digging the subtitles, the American version called Quarantine is every bit as good and gory as Rec and stars horror favorite Jennifer Carpenter crawling for her life in virtually every other scene. Is it zombies? A man-made virus? Witchcraft? Demonic possession run amok? You can’t go wrong with learning the finer points of apartment-style self-defense from the infected in either Rec or Quarantine.

VFW

In this Fangoria produced grindhouse-style crowdpleaser, it’s not so much about the pandemic itself that creates the chaos, but about the lack of law enforcement to keep it all in check. A runaway teen avenging the loss of her sister steals from the biggest war zone criminal in the city and is relentlessly pursued by his bloodthirsty band of drug-fueled cult followers. Taking refuge in a burned-out VFW building, she comes across a quartet of Vietnam vets who are looking to make one final last stand as soldiers against the invading punks. Quite possibly one of the most unabashedly violent and bloody films of the 21st Century, only in a film like this is using a circular saw to carve through wasteland punks a totally acceptable and routine thing to do.

Andromeda Strain

This one is about as old-school sci-fi horror can possibly get. Based on the classic novel by Michael Crichton himself, if you believe in massive military coverup disasters then this one has you covered. Satellites from outer space crash in New Mexico and reveal to have brought back with them an alien virus that literally crystallizes and eventually turns a human’s blood into powder! Racing against the viral clock is a band of ragtag scientists who at the same time try to combat the ultimate nuclear-bomb trigger that can destroy all of mankind! And did we mention that all of this is battled out in an underground Vegas bunker codenamed “Wildfire”?

The Road Warrior

If you want a glimpse into wasteland life post-pandemic, this vintage Mel Gibson smash hit does it better than anyone. Among the many life lessons are: wearing s&m bondage gear makes for perfectly acceptable everyday wear, never trust a boomerang, and fuel will be more sought after than toilet paper for some strange reason.

Outbreak

For those wanting to know just how such a worldwide, man-killing virus starts, then Outbreak has the answer. What Is A Ouija Board?

Man has always possessed an unslaked thirst for knowledge from the other side. Historical texts tell of man wanting to contact the afterlife as far back as the Biblical days and the various warnings against it in Levitical texts from 538 B.C. Curiosity cannot be helped as humanity wants to know what happens when we die. Where do we go? Who do we meet? Boiled down, this curiosity evolves from a need for ultimate knowledge. Over time there have been many ways and methods used to make contact and get these answers. Divination rods, runes, tea leaves, seances, scrying, automatic writing, and even sigil spell-casting has been used to try and elicit answers from spirits. All reasonable, yet they contain the fatal flaw of personal interpretation to try and decipher what spirits are trying to say, but is there another way? Enter the Ouija board.

History of the Ouija Board

The Ouija board was first documented as being found in human history way back in China 1100 A.D. It was a newly discovered way to conquer necromancy within the Jin Dynasty by forming drawn-out Chinese letters on matted bast fiber paper scraps. Then an instrument called a planchette was uses in conjunction with the letterboard. The planchette was a crudely shaped wood disk with the center removed leaving a quarter-sized hole that reveals just what letter the planchette happens to be situated over. Subsequent boards were used for the next four hundred years until they were outlawed by the Qing Dynasty as being contrary to the moral good. By the mid-1600s, the world was in love with Eastern Asia and many merchant ships with eager traders came in and out of the Orient and by proxy, the ouija board was further spread around the world to include stopovers in India, Africa, and most of Eastern Europe.

Elijah Bond, William Fuld, and The Ouija Board

In 1890 an American inventor and businessman named Elijah Bond came across a rudimentary form of the ouija board. Seizing the momentum on the popularity of post-Civil war seances that were occurring across the country (even former First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln was a rabid user of), Bond filed a formal patent on the board. He slightly redesigned the planchette so as to have a see-through glass piece with a triangular gripping ridge to employ this as the must-have parlor game at the time. He also formally pressed and printed out the board to include the full American English alphabet complete with number board as well as smaller whole words to include “yes”, “no”, and “goodbye”.

William Fuld’s Tombstone

Bond eventually sold his patent to an employee named William Fuld who set to formally market and name the board as the Ouija Board. There has ample speculation on the name ouija itself. Some historians believe it to be derived from an Egyptian phrasing that means “good luck”. Others believe it to be a combination of the French word for yes (“oui”) and the German word for yes (“ja”). Fuld took the board to new heights as Bond eventually passed away in 1921, yet he is still formally recognized as the father of the Ouija Board so much so that even his grave is modeled after the board.

The Ouija Board Goes Mainstream

The Ouija Board was subsequently marketed as a talking board; a fun-time parlor game for attendees to try and contact the other side with any burning questions they had. Sensationalism grew from the board’s use and subsequent answers to the point science attempted to step in. Prior to the board going mainstream, British scientists and founding father of electromagnetism Michael Faraday, attempted to debunk the board under controlled tests. Faraday believed the responses from the board were not from spirits, yet an ideomotor response. He theorized that participants in the board were subconsciously moving the planchette to answer questions with answers they wanted. Faraday’s theory could have some credibility with one or two users as Ouija Board enthusiasts claim, but not party gatherings with seven or eight different people touching the planchette. For Faraday, the rules of conjuring and talking to a spirit were too informal despite having some rules accompany the game; primarily that the board must be opened and then subsequently closed.

Parker Brothers Ouija Board

Eventually, the board was sold to Parker Brothers in 1967 who took advantage of the 20th Century’s fascination with the afterlife. The gaming company redesigned the board to give it a sleek, yet dark look with an expertly crafted planchette and hailing production of the board straight from Salem, Massachusetts. Marketed as family-friendly, the gaming company and board did run afoul of protests. Christianity, and Catholicism in particular condemned the manufacture and use of the board as not a family-friendly game, but instead an ungodly way to make communion with powerful and dangerous demons. In 1973 the box office horror smash film The Exorcist hit theaters depicting a young girl wickedly possessed by a profaning demon after having played with a seemingly harmless Ouija Board in her basement.

Famed paranormal talk radio show host Art Bell had a deep fascination with tales from the afterlife to a point in which he himself privately used a board. His experience with the board yielded something so terrifying and revelatory to him that he refused to ever reveal what happened to him, which became a lifelong oath that he took to his very grave in 2019.

Today, the manufacture of the Ouija Board is still very much alive across all spectrums of capitalistic design. Shirts, hats, coffee mugs, keychains, and even doormats styled after the Ouija Board are directly available for purchase. Through social media, there are Ouija Board seances, consultations, and even how-to’s across a wide array of channels. For every video documenting its experimental use, there is another debating against it. There is no question that using a Ouija Board opens up a powerful doorway to the spirit world, but in using one must always remember that you never know exactly who…or what….you may be talking to.

Seven Of The Strangest And Most Disturbing Tombstones

Ouija Tombstone

Elijah Bond is the man who was responsible for everyone’s favorite talking board to the spirits in the afterlife….The Ouija Board. Patented in 1891, Bond used his expertise as a lawyer and knowledge of the occult to get the board made and sold in specialty stores. He died in 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland, however, his grave was looked to something as a sort of pilgrimage for occultists. Being both hard to find and somewhat faded and broken, the paranormal community chipped in to get him something a little more fitting of his life’s work.

Houdini’s Grave

While not as visually alarming or disturbing as some other headstones, Harry Houdini’s grave in Machpelah Cemetery inside New York City is one of the more respected and disrespected resting places. A famous magician, Houdini was obsessed with the afterlife and frequently attempted to contact spirits on the other side. After dying from acute appendicitis, Houdini’s remains were finally laid to rest. A bust of his head was laid atop the tombstone. Over the decades his bust has been subject to cruel vandalism and is often replaced. Due to his obsession with the spirit world, many visit his grave and conduct seances there at times in hopes he can somehow communicate back. All this coupled with the overgrowth in the quiet cemetery, Houdini’s grave definitely gives off a scare factor to most.

Specimens Grave

The Columbus State Hospital Asylum Cemetery in Central Ohio is not a fun place. The asylum was used to house scores of people including juveniles, unclaimed children, the criminally insane, and geriatric patients whom nobody could care for. The cemetery for the asylum is marked with scores of first names only, as some patients who checked in never gave formal last names. Other headstones are labeled simply, “M” or “F”, dictating that the remains were either male or female and the names unknown. However, one headstone in the cemetery is wholly thought-provoking in its chilling simplicity as it reads only, “Specimens”. The asylum has been out of commission for decades and nobody knows the true origin of the tombstone or what is underneath. Needless to say, the eerie curiosity factor on this one will likely never be answered.

Giles Corey Tombstone

The surface area on a tombstone is albeit, a relatively small one listing the name, dates of birth, and death. But what about the cause of death? Inside the Howard Street Cemetery of Salem, Massachusetts is the eternal resting place of Giles Corey. Born in 1611, the man was a farmer in the community during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Accused of practicing witchcraft, Corey was subject to a torture method called pressing. He was laid out and heavy stones were incrementally stacked on his body forcing incredible weight upon him by the sheriff and questioning judges. Corey is famous for when being asked to confess witchcraft, he breathlessly would whisper, “more weight.” The weight of the rocks were so heavy it repeatedly pressed his tongue out of his head which the sheriff would then in turn force back into his mouth with a nearby cane. Today Corey’s grave is the most famous at Howard Street.

Victim of The Beast 666

In the Salt Lake City Cemetery lies the grave of a woman named Lilly Gray. By all accounts, she was an ordinary woman who led something of a normal life. However, the controversy surrounds her has to do with the chilling epitaph that reads at the bottom, “Victim of the Beast 666.” Lilly’s third and final husband was a man named Elmer Gray, a petty burglar who had serious issues with the government and his former parole board. When Lilly died, Elmer had this specific tombstone made for her. At first glance, people are led to believe that Lilly made a deal with the Devil and somehow lost. However, the prevailing theory now is that there are some who refer to “the Beast 666” as the government body as a whole. Since Elmer believed Lilly was somehow double-crossed by them, that’s the best reasoning for the inscription. Strangely enough, when Elmer died, he requested to be buried on the opposite side of the cemetery away from Lilly’s grave.

Baby Monster Grave

Written on the tombstone of a grave inside the Saar Pioneer Cemetery in King County, Washington is one of the more disturbing, yet bittersweet inscriptions that simply reads in bold, stone chiseled font…..”BABY MONSTER”. For anyone coming across this sad little grave, they are hit with two different sobering thoughts. One is that the grave holds the body of an infant who never got to experience life at all and died far too young. The other is that the infant was possibly born cruelly deformed, and in the late 19th Century, medical treatments would be incredibly harsh. Turns out the eternal joke is on cemetery bystanders because “Monster” is actually the baby’s surname and their father, John Monster, is actually buried next to the child.

Inez Clark Tombstone

Some tombstones have sculptures of the deceased’s face, or classic art pieces made and attached to them. But what about full-body casts? The Graceland Cemetery of Chicago contains the headstone of young Inez Clark. Only seven years old when she died, her parents were heartbroken and before burial had a full, life-size sculpture of young Inez made. It was placed atop her grave and surrounded by a full glass case to protect her from the elements. A popular legend is that young Inez was terrified of storms growing up, and during vicious storms at the cemetery, people claim her sculpture leaves its glass case until the storm is over! Others have heard crying when standing near the grave. Overly creepy, many visitors claim that being in the cemetery late at night with a slow fog rolling in is just about the creepiest experience they’ve ever had.

The Conjuring 3: Release Date, Cast, and Crew

Series creator of this beloved horror film franchise, James Wan, will be handing directorial duties over to another veteran horror director in Michael Chaves. If his name sounds familiar it is because he directed one of 2019’s overlooked horror gems in The Curse of La Llorona, which James Wan actually produced as well. The True Story of The Conjuring 3

Inspired by real-life events, the original case for this occurred deep within Connecticut in February 1981. A man named Arne Johnson stabbed another man to death and claimed it was, in fact, a vicious demonic entity that possessed him and made him commit murder. This criminal case has particular notoriety for being the first time that a defendant actually claimed demonic possession as a defense in American history. How did this demonic entity come about? According to the Warren’s, it entered into Johnson after jumping from a small boy as the demon escaped Hell. You know, classic demon jumping from boy story.

Previous Candyman lead actor Tony Todd explicitly gave his blessing to Jordan Peele in this remake and is rumored to even have a brief cameo in this sure to be horror pleaser.

Dark Harvest

Based on author Norman Patridge’s short fiction hit Dark Harvest, Netflix Black Mirror director David Slade has brought to life one of the more interesting horror plots in some time. Once a year, locals in a tiny town send an unlikely competitor into the cornfields to battle a giant pumpkin-headed horror monster called Sawtooth Jack. Despite a plodded out release, details on casting and the special effects for this anticipated thriller are almost non-existent which makes the chill factor on this one a 10/10.

Dexter Is Returning To Showtime In 2021

In 2006 the Showtime Network debuted a new series with an unlikely hero and plot: a Miami police blood spatter expert who moonlights as a serial killer. Dexter became one of the surprise smash hits of cable television, racking up dozens of awards and even endeared an entire generation of viewers to television’s most lovable serial killer……and he’s back!

Here are five things you need to know about the Dark Passenger!

Dexter is officially back and in the flesh! Series actor Michael C. Hall is officially reprising his role as serial killer Dexter Morgan. There was a time in 2009 where an animated series, Dexter: Early Cuts debuted that Hall voiced even had a graphic novel paired with it. Fans, however, weren’t too thrilled and wanted to see Hall back in live-action form. As of today, the Showtime Network has come out to publicly say the new series will not be animated and definitely will be live-action.
Dexter, for now, will be a limited ten-episode series run on the Showtime Network. While future seasons and episodes won’t entirely be out of the question, as with most television series’, it all depends on ratings and fan reaction. Judging by the amount of rabid Dexter fans out there this should be a non-issue.
Fall 2021. Live it, know it, and circle that time on your calendars as this will be the slated premiere for the newest incarnation of Dexter. Filming has yet to begin so a hard date hasn’t been set, but somewhere around Halloween 2021 would be a more than a fitting timeframe for such a morbidly fascinating series as Dexter.
Original Dexter showrunner Clyde Phillips is returning. If seasons one through four of Dexter were your thing (who can forget John Lithgow’s creepy role as the Trinity serial killer), then you’ll definitely welcome the news that Phillips is back. Co-President of Showtime, Gary Levine recently commented about doing proper service to fans of the series and only that Dexter’s story would continue if they found a worthy enough storyline to keep him going, and they’ve indeed found one!
Will actress Jennifer Carpenter return as Dexter’s foulmouthed detective sister Debra Morgan? COVID-19 has indeed written off many things in 2020, holidays among them. Churches closed for Easter, the local Fourth of July fireworks canceled. Even the aptly named Labor Day had many folks inside trapped within their homes. Halloween was meant to be just another COVID-19 cancellation…….or is it? If there’s one holiday that doesn’t go down easy, it’s Halloween. Its origins are steeped in ancient Druid magic, and like many iconic horror slashers, it’s always waiting to come back from the beyond! Wanting to join in the fight to help save Halloween from the wretches of COVID-19? Your friends here at FrightFind have gotten with some veterans of the holiday (and a doctor or two) to make sure All Hallow’s Eve stays a safe one!

Do Your Research

The biggest pro tip to staying safe on Halloween during COVID-19 is to first know and respect your local trick or treating zones. Do a quick circle of the block or neighborhoods to see firstly if anyone is even receptive to Halloween. If one of your goto neighborhoods are famous for elaborate horror displays in the front yard and they have them set up this year, chances are they’ll participate. On the other hand, if some areas have no displays, signage, or even a pumpkin out front, they most likely will be unwelcoming of anyone on Halloween. How to find safer and more participatory neighborhoods? Local areas of your city or town will have circulating community newspapers and social media pages that tout such events taking place. But above all with planning this out, check with your local health department to know which parts of town may have quarantine restrictions.

Trunk or treat is the best way to get all that candy in a safe and responsible manner. The best part? Some even hire out small carnival attractions that boast games, prizes, and even more treats!

Staying In?

Staying in this year? No problem there either during the pandemic. If having anyone over, CDC recommendations are to make it an outdoor Halloween party with plenty of distancing. One popular trend that’s emerged are people hanging white linen sheets in their backyard and plugging in a digital projector; instant backyard drive-in movie theatre screen where you can play such classics as Evil Dead or Texas Chainsaw Massacre! Many physicians and board of health members agree, if anyone at any time feels ill or displays any signs of COVID symptoms, do not hesitate in asking them to leave or distance themselves from you and your guests. But make sure to politely screen anyone coming into your home for a Halloween party and kindly remind them to maintain a minimum space of six feet between them and other guests.

Have the kids dress up and stay home in the driveway or front yard and have neighbors walking the street asking or tossing, treats to the kids. A safe and effective way to see everyone involved.

Plus, a great deal of them are really good at letting you know their latest operating hours, procedures, and any COVID-19 protocols they have in place.

Go Outside

Next, aim for haunts that are primarily outdoors. COVID-19 is less likely to get ahold of you in a wide-open space. Chances are great that your area will have some of the best-haunted mazes, ghost tours, trails, and hayrides around. In fact, some haunted attractions listed on the FrightFind website even allow for haunted zombie paintball! Talk about the ultimate in haunted attraction social distancing! While true that the group size of people going through these haunts maybe half of what it usually is, this is for the best as being in smaller numbers outdoors will greatly limit any chances of being exposed to COVID-19 while trying to get your haunt on.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when going to a haunted attraction or haunted house this year is to respect others. That includes abiding by any and all rules that the particular haunt may have. If they require masks, then please wear them. Some places are even encouraging or offering slight discounts to those wearing Halloween themed masks. Failure to abide by this not only can result in you being asked to leave the haunt, but they would also have to potentially shut down for deep cleaning which means canceled days and unhappy haunted attraction goers. Think Outside The Box

There are plenty of creative haunts that go outside of the traditional haunted house box. Remember the Rainforest Car Wash in Ohio that converts into a killer clown car wash?
