New Scenes with Sam from Cult Fav Trick ‘r Treat are Latest Digital Display Offering from AtmosFX

Seattle-based digital decorations pioneers AtmosFX has partnered with Legendary Entertainment and director Michael Dougherty to release a new product featuring the character of Sam, the mysterious being in the burlap-sack mask who ties together Trick ‘r Treat‘s intertwined Halloween-themed stories. This product allows fans to digitally decorate their homes and yards this Halloween season with unique animations that capture the spirit of Dougherty’s cult horror classic Trick ‘r Treat.

The release date for the product is set for late September 2016 so you can add Sam to your Halloween displays this year. The animated displays enable anyone to easily project dynamic moving images onto walls, windows, props, and more.

The Trick ’r Treat digital decoration features all new vignettes filmed this year featuring Sam who, just as he does in the film, seeks vengeance on those who do not adhere to the traditions of Halloween.

Each vignette features Sam dispensing his own unique brand of grisly justice. That means you can show Sam in your home or yard perpetrating dastardly deeds such as:

Responding to the neighborhood bully who attempts to trick-or-treat without an adequate costume.
Exacting revenge on a residence where healthy snacks are given away for Halloween.
Turning the tables on an old curmudgeon who steals candy from neighborhood kids.
Re-decorating the home of a homeowner who removes his Halloween decorations before the night is complete.
Conducting a mesmerizing symphony of fire from a cauldron of unwanted sweets.

Other Trick ’r Treat digital decorations highlight Sam in several shorter “startle scares,” designed to surprise unsuspecting viewers.

AtmosFX’s Trick ’r Treat Digital Decorations will feature scenes in window mode, for both horizontal and vertical aspects. Scenes will also be available in AtmosFX’s Hollusion™ mode which, when used with AtmosGEAR Hollusion Projection Material, creates an illusion where characters like Sam and his minions can appear and disappear in thin air.

This special AtmosFX Digital Decoration will be available as a high-definition digital download at the end of September 2016, at AtmosFX.com. Like its R-rated film counterpart, the AtmosFX Digital Decoration features horror-themed content and is not suitable for small children. You’ve been warned.

Trick ‘r Treat Sequel in the Works

In addition to releasing details on the new Trick ‘r Treat products, Dougherty was tight-lipped regarding the much anticipated Trick ‘r Treat sequel that is currently in process. No hard release date has been set yet, but FrightFind will be sure to keep you posted as details become available.

Dougherty hopes to turn Trick ‘r Treat into an trilogy. Speaking with Slash Film, Dougherty said,

“I’m going to speak carefully about that [Laughs], because the moment I utter a word about the sequel, everybody starts salivating,” said the writer/director. “It is very much my intention to make the sequel. Legendary is very committed to making the movie. Creatively, it’s in process. When it actually happens, I don’t know. But, hopefully, stuff like this — the digital decorations, the comic books, the merchandise, and what have you — will tide people over and I can finally get around to making it. Nothing would make me happier than returning to that universe. Like, I miss Sam. When we were shooting these vignettes, I was getting a little bit emotional because I would love nothing more than to hang out with Sam again for a year or two, bringing him back to the big screen.”

Michael Dougherty is a writer, director, producer, and artist who has established a name for himself in a diverse range of genres. Most recently he co-wrote and directed the hit horror-comedy Krampus for Universal and Legendary Pictures. IT Remake: New Pennywise Look

ET brings us a new look at Pennywise the Dancing Clown from the 2017 IT remake. The first look at Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise got everyone’s attention. Now, the clown gets even more sinister with a peek at his hellish clown suit from another age.

“There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume,” designer Janie Bryant told Entertainment Weekly.

The full frontal of the clown suit is more authentic than the original Pennywise played by fan favorite, Tim Curry. Designed by Emmy winner Janie Bryant (Deadwood & Madmen) the costume resembles clown garb from a much different era. The clown suit has Grimaldi-esque features. Joseph Grimaldi’s famed “Joey” the clown of the 1800s has inspired clown makeup and attire down through the ages. You can see some semblance in the form-fit arms and legs as well as the Fortuny pleated collar.

We still don’t know too much until we see Skarsgård’s Pennywise in action as these images are definitely treated. In comparison, the colors are not as loud as Curry’s original. Curry’s clown looks more like the one that shows up to your house to blow up balloons while the new Pennywise resembles a clown from the theater with a hint of Mime.

The remake of IT is synonymous with the remake of Pennywise. So far, so good.

The Mystery of Roanoke Island

We find the giant question mark surrounding American Horror Story’s 6th season theme very fitting when combined with the rumors that it might involve the Lost Colony of Roanoke. Even if AHS pulls the rug out from under us on Roanoke’s involvement, the mystery of the theme and the questions about what really happened to the Lost Colony seem very fitting.

The Lost Colony of Roanoke

One of the creepiest and most unsettling mysteries in the history of the United States might just be the story of Roanoke Island. Located just off the coast of North Carolina in modern day Dare County, Roanoke Island was home to a group of 115 settlers who went missing after a harsh winter in 1590.

In 1584, Sir Walter Raleigh received permission and a charter from Queen Elizabeth I to travel to the new world to explore and colonize settlements in remote lands not under her rule. Raleigh sent a group of colonists to be governed by John White to the island of Roanoke where they established a settlement.

The Settlement of Roanoke Island

In 1587, 115 men, women, and children sailed to Roanoke Island with the hopes of forming a new settlement, but they instead became the stuff of legend. Governor John White sailed back to England to get more supplies for the colonists. His return to Roanoke was delayed by war and weather.

White left behind several family members, including his own daughter and newly born granddaughter. He had expected that the voyage from Roanoke Island to England and back again would take well under a year, but it was actually three years before his return.

The Vanishing of The Lost Colony

When White returned on August 18th of 1590, instead of finding his friends and family waiting for him, he came back to an empty colony. All 118 people that White left in the colony were gone, and there were few signs to indicate what happened to them. There were no signs of struggle, attack or famine. They had simply vanished.

What does Croatoan mean?

The only evidence they found was the word “CROATOAN” significantly carved into a post and the letters “CRO” etched into a tree. The remnants of the colony were a few broken down buildings and not much else. White assumed that the settlers took shelter with the local Croatoan Native American tribe on Croatoan island to the south. However, bad weather conditions and other factors forced him to abandon the colony and move back to England. The word “Croatoan” could have meant several things. It could have referred to the Native American inhabitants, or it could refer to the island itself.

Dozens of theories now exist about what actually happened to those colonists. The most common theory is that the harsh winters left the colony with few supplies. Those who survived may have sought shelter with the Native American tribe, which might explain why later settlers reported seeing white children and people with red hair living with that tribe. Other stories are a little more gruesome and even supernatural.

Mysteries, Dare Stones, and Other Wild Theories

One theory claims that the settlers left the island in the hopes of finding help, but that they encountered a number of problems that led to each one dying. The Dare stones, which appeared in the 1930s, back up this theory. The Dare Stones had a series of messages carved into them and are said to be from the Roanoke settlers. These stones allegedly tell the story of what happened to each survivor from the survivors themselves. They are named the Dare Stones after Eleanor White Dare, the daughter of John White. Eleanor Dare’s stone was the first to have been found in 1937.

Eleanor’s stone stated that her daughter and husband were both dead and that savages had killed the rest of the colonists. The stones weave a tale that is not the easiest to follow. Some tell of a sanctuary and some say that a tribe bore ill-will with the colonists. The stones were dated back to the 1590s, but continue to leave enough to the imagination that things did not go well for the Lost Colony.

However, the Dare Stones were said to be fakes in 1941. A journalist questioned the stones authenticity as well as the character of the stone’s finders. The stones are not recognized as genuine today, but their authenticity has also not been completely ruled out either which continues the mystery.

An even more gruesome theory claims that Spanish explorers found the island and either murdered or kidnapped the survivors. There are even rumors that the settlers encountered dark spirits on the island and that those spirits ended their lives in grizzly ways to protect the local Croatoan people. If they did come to an untimely end, it might explain why visitors see strange lights, hear whispers and see orbs on Roanoke Island today.

What Happened to the Lost Colony of Roanoke?

New evidence found by archaeologists working in the south may prove what actually happened. Bones and other evidence dug up in multiple sites led researchers to believe that the survivors actually formed two different groups and set off on a journey away from the island to find help. This evidence includes English pottery that predates the first recorded English settlers to arrive in the region after the first colonists. Other evidence included tools unlike those used by local tribes and weapons. Some believe the colonists encountered something so deadly and so dark that they had no choice but to flee for their lives.

Fans of this historic mystery can look forward to learning more about the colonists and seeing what Ryan Murphy thinks happened during the sixth season of the hit television series American Horror Story. Murphy, the man behind other hit shows like Nip/Tuck and Glee, created the anthology series in the hopes of telling a new unsettling story every year. The first season focused on a family who experienced weird things after moving into a haunted house. Later editions of the show took place in a mental institution, a circus sideshow, a creepy hotel and a home belonging to a coven of witches.

What will the AHS theme be?

As with previous editions, Murphy refuses to spoil the upcoming season with any new details. When photos leaked of the cast working in Santa Clarita, California, many surmised that the show would focus on the Lost Colony. The only thing fans know so far is that the show will focus heavily on children, leading some to wonder if the new season will tell the story of Virginia Dare and the other lost children of that colony.

Despite not filming on Roanoke Island, leaked photos show historic buildings taking center stage in the new season. With wood clapboard siding, blown glass windows and thatched roofs, these buildings look just like those the colonists lived in while on the island. Fans can look forward to seeing classic faces from previous seasons like Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Denis O’Hare, Matt Bomer, Wes Bentley and Lady Gaga, however Jessica Lange will not be reuniting with the AHS cast. The new season of American Horror Story will also feature some new additions to the cast like Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Junior.

There are also rumors that the new season will jump back and forth in time between modern days and the original settlement on Roanoke Island. This will likely explain what happened to the survivors left behind by White and connect their stories to a modern day plot. Murphy teased that the new season will have a connection to the first season of the show too. If American Horror Story does involve the mystery of Roanoke Island we’re in store for another interesting ride come this September 14th.

Like you, we at FrightFind are big fans of all things horror. That includes all the clever and talented artists who create the make-up, masks, and other effects used in movies and attractions to bring nightmares to life in the best, most horrifying ways. So when we learned that Jim Brown of Eville J’s Creepy Closet was the victim of intellectual property theft we got fired up.

We’re a big fan of Jim’s work and even travel with one of his nightmarish clown candy bowls. So when we heard this story, we thought the more people that hear it the better. Plus, these overseas mask knockoffs are scary. “Bad” scary, not “good” scary.

As you can see in the comparison photo above, Jim is clearly being ripped off here. So we’re trying to spread awareness the best way we can. How can you help? Greetings earthlings, my name is Jim Brown and I am the owner/operator of a small Halloween mask and prop making business called Eville J’s Creepy Closet. I have been asked by my friends here at Frightfind to write up a little something about my recent run in with an overseas company that has been stealing mask designs from American mask making companies, mine included.

Now I realize this is nothing new and it’s been going on for years, but until it affects you directly it’s an easy thing to ignore. For me, this started on July 28, 2016 when I received a message with a picture attached from a customer asking if said picture was something I had made or if it was a cheap knock-off of one of my masks? A cheap knock-off it was! At first I brushed it away and tried to forget about it. However, the more I got to thinking about somebody taking something I had designed, the more angry it made me. It wasn’t even four hours later that I found out it wasn’t just one design being ripped off but two, and they both were very obvious copies of my work.

Now let me stop this rant for just a second to give you a little back story about me and Eville J’s. Like many of you, I love Halloween and the horror genre, always have. What started out as a hobby to extend the Halloween season has little by little snowballed into pretty much a second job. It keeps me busy all year long. But even though every year we continue to grow and get bigger it is still just a part time gig I do in evenings and on weekends. I spend lots and lots of hours sculpting, mold making, painting, etc.

In the last few years I’ve branched out to attend haunt conventions, which is fun and a chance to connect with our fan base. It is ton of work and a big expense, and you can only hope that it will pay off. So when you start to reflect back on all the years and all the work you’ve spent to build a name, gather a following, and make things that people recognize as yours, it’s very VERY frustrating to find out someone has come along and basically said “OK, these designs are mine now.” Then to find out that they are mass producing them overseas and selling them for less than I do! What’s worse, from what I’ve been told, there’s really not much you can do about it. Even if you go to the trouble and expense to patent, copyright, trade mark, licensing or whatever, it’s still hard to fight it. Unless you can do it all internationally as well, then you’re pretty much just SOL.

I did contact the company that had the listings up and they apologized and claimed they didn’t know they were copies of my work and they had gotten them from a Chinese supplier. They took all listings down, and also claimed they would check their records to see if they could get me the name of where the mask came from. I don’t expect that I will ever really get that info. And if I do, I’m not sure it will even matter!

So what’s the answer? This I do not know, but what I do know is that when I voiced my anger the outcry and support I got from my fellow American mask makers and Eville J’s fans and followers was overwhelming. So can we stop this kind of thing? Maybe someday, if laws are changed to protect artist designs for oversea companies. But for now I think you just have to make the best work you can and offer your customers the very best service you can. Then maybe we can steal back our business from the rip off bastards that can’t create something of their own.

I’ll end this by saying thanks again to everybody who has stood behind us and supported us. It means a lot. Seeing that kind of love for my tiny little shop that I run out of a one car garage fuels my fires and makes me want to drive harder to give people even better products and service. IT Remake – Tim Curry vs Bill Skarsgard

Ladies and gentlemen, introducing the challenger in the blue corner: Standing in at 6 feet 4 inches and hailing from Vällingby, Sweden. He barks. He bites. He’s Bill “Don’t Cha Want It?” Skarsgård!!!

And in the red corner: Standing in at 5 feet 9 inches and hailing from Grappenhall, England. Rated by many as the best pound for pound Pennywise there will ever be! The legend and current champion of the world … Tim “The Dancing Clown” Curry!!!!!!!

There is no doubt that any fan of Tim Curry, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Stephen King’s original miniseries IT is keeping an eye on the two Hollywood remakes that made Tim Curry a legend in hearts and minds. It’s not often you have two defining roles win over so many, only to have both recreated at the same time. Now, with the much anticipated IT remake everyone is quick to compare Curry to his youthful Pennywise successor, Bill Skarsgård. While Tim Curry has transcended his roles, it may be a tough bout for Skarsgård who has been quick to point out that he will not be trying to recreate Curry’s performance in IT.

“Tim Curry’s performance was truly great, but it’s important for me to do something different because of that. I’ll never be able to make a Tim Curry performance as good as Tim Curry.” -Bill Skarsgård

Recently, the first look at Bill Skarsgård in Pennywise clown makeup made quite a stir. Many fans of the original miniseries have formed their opinions already, but you have to give the IT remake a chance. The miniseries was NOT perfect. Curry may have been brilliant, but so much was left out of the made-for-TV miniseries that you have to be somewhat excited to see what new technology and a Hollywood budget can do with the story.

If you don’t know much about Skarsgård, check out Hemlock Grove on Netflix. The Hemlock Grove series is based on Brian McGreevy’s best-selling book of the same name and produced by new horror master Eli Roth. Skarsgård’s performance is devilish and his expression is nothing short of sinister. Coming from a family of Swedish actors, he definitely knows how to carry a torch without lighting his own ass on fire.

And one thing’s for sure: They both look good in drag. We did have to Photoshop Bill’s face onto his brother’s body, but you can barely tell, right?

Only time will tell how Bill Skarsgård will recreate the infamous Pennywise. Until then, it’s all speculation. So without further ado…

?6 – American Horror Story Season 6 Theme Revealed

Now that most of us have finished binge watching Stranger Things we can turn our attention to the much anticipated 6th season of American Horror Story. Last season’s addition of Lady Gaga to the cast expanded the AHS universe to millions of Gaga’s “Little Monsters” exposing the show to an even greater audience. The anticipation of a Gaga return and the tight-lipped secret of the season 6 theme has kept AHS fans in suspense. Now we finally have answers. Read on.

Will Lady Gaga Return to AHS Season 6?

Will Lady Gaga return for season 6? That was the question on everyone’s minds after her Golden Globe-winning performance as the Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel. Gaga let it slip months ago that she wants to be back and AHS — and now the show has confirmed that Lady Gaga will indeed be returning for the 6th season.

So what is the AHS theme?

?6 American Horror Story: CROATOAN?

The official name has not been released, but TMZ’s set photos revealed that AHS season 6 will *may* involve The Lost Colony from the island of Roanoke. This is based on the famous disappearance of 115 English colonists from the mysterious Roanoke Colony in 1590. The only clues left behind were the words “CROATOAN” carved into a fence post and “Cro” carved into a tree. There was no sign of a battle or any type of attack on the colonists, yet they were never seen or heard from again.

The network previously revealed that Season 6 will be set in two different periods in time. So look forward to a possible cross-time interweave between the Roanoke Island of 1590 and today’s Roanoke, which is in Dare County, North Carolina near the town of Manteo. But that is all speculation for now. For answers, we’ll have to wait until season 6 kicks off in September.

Why all the ? marks surrounding the AHS theme?

That’s because it’s still a guessing game. AHS has been releasing new teasers over the last couple of weeks, but it’s said that only one teaser may reveal the nature of the theme. In true AHS fashion they are causing a stir that is only heightening the anticipation of the coming 6th season. We find the mystery and the ? marks a nice tie in with the mystery of Roanoke, but we can’t rule out that AHS is going to pull the rug out from under us and all of this be about the creature from the black lagoon. The Roanoke story has a lot of what makes sense to an AHS plotline: a somewhat real mystery, real unanswered questions, and a nice blend of fact and fiction (hopefully more fiction than fact!). The mystery and intrigue around Roanoke is very similar to the Cecil Hotel and Elisa Lam disappearance and how those true events inspired the AHS: Hotel Cortez storyline. It makes sense, but you feel like you have to watch your back on this one.

American Horror Story Season 6 Teasers

Here’s a compilation of the 6 teasers AHS recently released. Each of the teasers were released last week and were titled What’s Cooking, Lullaby, Post Op, Milli Crossing, and Descent.

Why are clowns scary?

Big shoes. Giant red nose. Squirting flower. Tiny car full of other face painted lunatics. CLOWNS! Millions of people fear them, but why do so few love them? I’m sorry to all you clowns out there, but it has to be said. You freak people out! But why? Clowns are supposed to make us laugh and bring joy into the world. Aren’t they?

History of Clowns

From the beginning of recorded history, there have always been men and women who could make others laugh. 5000 years ago, ancient Egyptians used African Pygmies, known as Dangas to amuse the Royal Families. China used clowns, called YuSze, to keep Ch’in Shih Huang-ti entertained as he oversaw the construction of the Great Wall of China.

Ancient Rome used several types of clowns to entertain. They would “keep” people with physical and learning disabilities whom they called Stulti or Fatui. They were believed to be good luck and were thought to have special powers, which meant they were usually treated well. So they had that going for them.

These early clowns grew into what we know as the Jester. The Jester was meant to entertain the nobleman and his many guests with acts of song and storytelling. Some juggled or performed magic but were still considered a buffoon in the eyes of their turkey leg eating employer. Private jesters slowly died out, or were killed off if they weren’t funny enough, and up popped the street performing jesters. More than anything, these Jesters lead to the clown that we know and love fear today, by way of the theater and circus.

The first modern circus opened in England in the late 18th century, where they mostly featured horse riding tricks. It didn’t take long for people to demand more and so the clown was introduced and the rest is history. Circuses began showing up everywhere and clowns were in hot demand. This is when the classic white face, expression painted-on-look took hold. Yep, you can blame the Brits.

What makes clowns so scary?

An estimated 20-30% of the entire population is afraid, to a certain degree, of clowns. Extreme cases of clown fear have an actual phobia called Coulrophobia. Panic attacks, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, and nausea are all signs of Coulrophobia. But why? What makes these painted face pranksters menacing to so many? Is what’s hiding behind that makeup? Could it be the many scary clown movies that have left an impression on us from our youth? Is it the sadness that often accompanies the person behind the makeup? Is it all the examples of mean or murderous clowns in pop culture? There are plenty to be afraid of.

John Wayne Gacy

Known as Pogo the Clown, John Wayne Gacy was nicknamed “Killer Clown” after his conviction in 1980 for murder and sexual assault of 33 teenage boys and young men. He spent his time spent dressing as a clown for community fundraisers, events, parades and children’s parties. He sometimes performed his unspeakable acts while dressed as Pogo. Gacy was put to death by lethal injection in 1994 and before his death he was quoted as saying, “A clown can get away with murder.” Honk Honk!

Pennywise – The Clown from It

This is no fast food hamburger selling clown. Pennywise is the demonic clown from Stephen King’s IT, who preys on the community of Derry, Maine. Many believe that cases of coulrophobia increased in the 1990s after the release of this made for TV miniseries. It makes sense to me. After watching IT in my youth, I am a firm believer that behind every balloon is a murderous clown. “Ohh yes… They Float Georgie… They Float… and when you’re down here, with me… YOU FLOAT TOO!”

The Joker

Cesar Romero was energetic. Jack Nicholson can’t help but be scary. Heath Ledger was brilliant. Jared Leto looks darn right insane in Suicide Squad. But none of them are as scary as the comic book Joker. This psychotic clown is a serial killer and mass murderer who killed Batman’s best bud Robin. A lot of people forget that he’s a clown, but he is through and through. “Smile because it confuses people. Smile because it’s easier than explaining what is killing you inside.”

The Poltergeist Clown

The toy clown from Poltergeist was part of several defining scenes from the movie. Audiences were scared to death of this doll. It doesn’t talk, or dance around. It merely exists. Always staring back at you. Never blinking. One thing Poltergeist teaches us: if your creepy toy clown goes missing, do not look under the bed!

Ronald McDonald

Over the years, even McDonald’s has downplayed its “lovable” clown from public view. Ronald McDonald, known as the McDonald’s marketing centerpiece since the 60s is rarely seen or even mentioned in ads or even in the restaurants. Fun fact, did you know that Willard Scott, the weatherman from the Today show was the original portrayer of Ronald McDonald? Scott also portrayed Bozo the Clown, another famous clown from the 60s. Apparently marketing in the 60s was a LOT of fun.

No more coffins? New way to bury the dead

An Italian company (Capsula Mundi) has a new way of burying the dead. Instead of coffins, they use seeds. Yes, they’ve developed a way to bring life from death by burying the dead in tree-growing pods. I like to call this, “How to make a haunted forest.”

Capsula Mundi’s project is a “broad-based project, which envisions a different approach to the way we think about death.” The bodies or ashes are buried in an egg-shaped pod and then placed in the earth underneath a preselected tree seed. The pods are made of biodegradable material and are an eco-friendly alternative to coffins. It’s a way for death to bring life as the human body becomes nutrients for the growing tree above.

Many belief systems have a form of the Tree of Life connecting Heaven and Hell

Rather than cutting down a tree for a coffin, you become a tree. Instead of visiting a graveyard, you’re visiting a forest. This makes for an interesting connection between life and death and further develops the theme of the Tree of Life. The Tree of Life is the concept of a sacred tree that provides a connection between Heaven and the Underworld from its roots to its leaves.

Forests of the dead

Graveyards already yield an array of ghost stories, can you imagine what will sprout from these forests grown from the dead? I can see Hollywood’s anticipation growing. Yes, all of those puns were intended.

As of 8/1/2016 Capsula for ashes are ready and available everywhere. The only limitation is the legislation in different
countries. Green burials as Capsula Mundi are legal in many countries (USA, UK, Ireland, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, India and many more) but not everywhere.

The Capsula for the body is still in the start up phase but Capusla Mundi is working hard to put it into production as soon as possible.

Netflix’s Stranger Things: An Homage to the Greats

So you haven’t quite wrapped up Game of Thrones and are only half way through Orange is the New Black. We get it. You have a lot of options these days and you can watch just about any show, anywhere, with the click of a button. However, if you love great storytelling, and especially if you’ve been alive in the last 50 years, stop what you’re doing and go watch Netflix’s Stranger Things.

You heard us right, after reading this article, go watch Netflix’s Stranger Things! Seriously. It’s full of everything you love from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even some 00s. It carries a ton of nostalgia for anyone over 30 and plenty of fun for the youngsters, too! It touches on E.T., The Goonies, Close Encounters, The X-Files, some Star Wars and even a few He-Man references to keep flow of memories rushing back from your childhood.

With many of our favorite movies being remade or rebooted these days (see Ghostbusters, Stephen King’s IT, John Carpenter’s The Thing, to name a few) Stranger Things doesn’t remake anything. Rather, it reconnects us to stories we love.

What is Netflix’s Stranger Things?

Stranger Things is an homage to everything you loved about the 80s, except maybe your giant bangs. The series is the creation of twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer who are known for writing and directing sci-fi horror for film and television. When you watch the series, you will probably notice something wonderfully familiar about it. That’s because there is.

Stranger Things doesn’t just borrow from your childhood movie library, it becomes it. It doesn’t cheaply steal plot lines, it reflects the look and feel of our favorite films. The extreme influence Steven Spielberg has had on these filmmakers is clear. E.T. is so present that you can’t go five minutes without finding a reference to the 1982 classic. But E.T. isn’t the only film that lives within the Stranger Things world.

Set in Hawkins, Indiana in the early 80s, the show is home to a struggling single mom, Dungeons and Dragons-playing boys, the nerdy girl dating the football star, a handful of bullies, a police chief who hits the bottle, a top secret research center, a girl whose nose bleeds when she make things happen, and a Hellmouth. This ain’t no Mayberry!

The Plot of Stranger Things

It doesn’t take long for things to go all Monster Squad when Will, one of the D&D kids, goes missing. Will’s friends jump on their banana seat bikes and begin their adventure looking for him. The more they look, the stranger the mystery becomes. They aren’t the only ones searching. The chief of police is on the job as is a secret government group with unsavory ethics. Who will find Will and end his mother’s misery? Will’s mom is played by Winona Ryder who gives the most unexpected performance of her career as she channels elements of Richard Dreyfus’s Roy Neary from Close Encounters and Jack Torrance of the Shining.

You will have questions!

What does Will’s disappearance have to do with the girl running through the woods in a hospital gown and the number 011 tattooed on her arm? Is she running away from Matthew Modine and his top secret government agency? It’s possible. Will she meet the nerdy boys and help them on their quest? Maybe. Will Sloth help Chunk escape the clutches of the Fratellis? So many questions!

The point is, you will have more questions than answers, and you won’t be able to stop watching once you start. The Duffer Brothers, who wrote, directed, and produced this Netflix gem, keep you guessing from the start. It’s as if Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King are somehow controlling these two young filmmaker’s minds. Come to think of it, that might be a great show, too!

Will there be a Stranger Things Season 2?

A second season of Stranger Things hasn’t been officially green-lit by Netflix yet, but all signs point to an emphatic YES, and the fans of this growing sensation couldn’t be happier. Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy eluded that he’s pretty confident a season 2 is on the horizon. When Levy was asked by Slash Films if he “envisions a few seasons with the same characters,” the Stranger Things producer responded,

Yes. The answer is yes and yes. We definitely are hopeful to go several more seasons. And the plan is to continue with this set of characters while introducing a few critical key new ones next season. So I’ll just say that a lot of the big mysteries get answered at the end of Season 1, but we are very much kind of unearthing new problems and questions that merit future stories and future investigation in the most enjoyable way. So we are in love with our cast and our characters. Things end up being resolved to some extent at the end of Season 1, but not entirely. And that’s why we’re so hopeful we get another few seasons to live with these people a little longer.

The Duffer Brothers are Hopeful, and Ready, for a 2nd Season

Not only are the Duffer brothers hopeful of a second season, they are prepared. They already have droves of research to guide the future of the series. The Duffer Brothers told IGN,

Now, we don’t answer all the questions by the end of the season – there are definitely some dangling threads. The hope is that it feels satisfying but that we left room and that if people respond to it we can go back into this world. But if we do get to go back, it’s not a second season as much as a sequel.

Rob Zombie Reveals New Character Posters for 31

The anticipation behind Rob Zombie’s 31 is peaking as Zombie and Saban Films released 4 new character posters recently. With the Sept 16, 2016 VOD release date just under 2 months away and the theatrical release October 20th, fans who have patiently waited through a rating delay and a change in production houses are eager. The wait looks to be paying off as the new character art is revealed.

The premise of 31:

five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large secret compound known as Murder World. Once there, they have 12 hours to survive a terrifying game called 31 in which “The Heads” – murderous maniacs dressed as clowns – are released to hunt them down and kill them.

Stephen King’s IT Remake – First Look

He is “the eater of worlds, and of children!” He is the eternal Pennywise and he is coming back after his 27 year slumber. Get the first glimpse of the new Pennywise.

Fans of Stephen King’s 1990 horror mini-series IT might be even more nervous than Ghostbusters fans right now. The fan love of Tim Curry’s Pennywise The Dancing Clown is unwavering making it a fan favorite among horror fans. Curry’s portrayal of the supernatural clown made the original IT so damn good that the new Pennywise dare not try to compare. So when Bill Skarsgård took the role of Pennywise for the 2017 theatrical remake, he decided to approach it differently rather than try to live up to the standards set by Curry. Skarsgård said,

“Tim Curry’s performance was truly great, but it’s important for me to do something different because of that. I’ll never be able to make a Tim Curry performance as good as Tim Curry.”

IT lovers have been discussing what Skarsgård’s version of Pennywise might look like, and have expressed a lot of apprehension. Entertainment Weekly recently released the first look of the new Pennywise, which you can see below.

Skarsgård’s new version of the demonic clown surely looks dark and menacing. There is something unnerving about that mischievous smile. It’ll be interesting to get a few more glimpses of the future clown to see how they portray Pennywise’s razor sharp teeth. How’s he going to honk that nose?

Did This Cellphone Catch a Man’s Spirit Leaving His Body After a Fatal Crash?

A photo taken by Saul Vasquez in KY may have caught an image of a man’s spirit leaving his body after a single vehicle accident. Do you believe?

Stanton, Kentucky -Saul Vasquez’s father took this photo while passing by in their tractor-trailer in Kentucky. Saul later posted it to Facebook and the image has been shared over 14,000 times in 3 days. It looks like the only thing more talked about this week is Pokemon Go. He later noticed something unusual. Vazquez writes on Facebook, “Zoom in and pay attention to the shadow just off the top of the state trooper hat. All I say is I hope everyone involved is okay!!”

The incident involving a motorcyclist happened on Tuesday (7/13/16). The motorcyclist was the only person involved and he was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Was This the Man’s Spirit Leaving His Body Or…?

There are many theories as to what is happening in the photo. If you look closely, just above the troopers hat, you see a white mist in the shape of a person’s body. It doesn’t look to be a glare on the trees nor does it appear the photo has been tampered with. Theories are that the figure could be the man’s spirit leaving his body or an apparition watching over him. Some have speculated the figure was an angel and some suggest it’s our minds trying to associate the shape with something we’re familiar with.

Other non-paranormal theories are that the image could be something on the window of the truck. Maybe a smudge on the lens of the camera too. Smoke from the accident. Perhaps a glitch in t he Matrix. The original photo from Saul Vasquez is below.

Here’s the same photo magnified 5 times. The figure looks less like the shape of man at this magnification, but the same can be said about the trooper. However, the whitish color does look like it extends down into the trooper when you compare him to the other people in the photo. Not completely a reason to say it’s debunked, but it does raise questions.

It’s definitely a sad situation for the family who lost a loved one, but hopefully this image can provide some help in their grief. What do you think this image could be?

It’s OK. Go See Ghostbusters. No Really. It’s OK!

Psycho. Clash of the Titans. Footloose. Planet of the Apes. Cape Fear. On and on the list of remakes goes. Now, the Ghostbusters are back. It isn’t another sequel, which confused the heck out of me. It’s as if Spengler, Venkman, Ray and the other guy never met Gozer the Gozerian. It’s as if Rick Moranis never batted around with Sigourney Weaver, which is pretty rude considering that may have been the closest he’s ever gotten to a Hollywood sex scene. It’s square one, but really it isn’t and that is where the audience is going to have a tough time letting the new Ghostbusters be good.
We’ve been waiting far too long and have been teased all too often with rumors of sequels. We’re not asking the reboot to hold up to the original, we just want the new Ghostbusters to be good. Is that asking too much?

Can Ghostbusters Be Good?

Ghostbusters definitely has a fighting chance with director Paul Feig. Feig has a great track record having made the hilarious comedies Freaks and Geeks, Spy, and Bridesmaids. Paul posed the question when making the new film, “What do we love about the first Ghostbusters?” Here’s hoping he can capture that.

The cast is also nothing to stick your nose up at. I personally have a crush on Kate McKinnin, but that’s for another story. Add Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy and Leslie Jones and you have a recipe for some great laughs. These women are one of the big reasons Saturday Night Live is still alive and well. In all honesty, I really can’t wait to see it. It’s just that I have been burned so many times that I can’t get my hopes up. If I walk in expecting greatness, I will undoubtedly be let down. That’s where I think the audience needs to trick itself into forgetting the original Ghostbusters. Walk in with an open mind, and whatever you do, don’t try and compare the 2 films.

Why Reboot Ghostbusters?

A few years ago I had that opportunity to speak with Leonard Maltin at The Grand Cinema in Tacoma, Wa. This is a great theater that shows a lot of independent films and has guest speakers from time to time. I asked, “Why does Hollywood feel the need to continue to remake movies that we love?” This is where I was positive that Leonard would scoff at my ridiculous question and leave the theater disgusted. Not the case. Leonard said something like, “Hollywood is full of short minded people who are looking for the next big blockbuster. They figure that if Footloose worked before, then why wouldn’t it bring in truck loads of money again?”

And here we are with a brand new Ghostbusters and I feel like something should be pointed out to all of the naysayers. YOU ASKED FOR IT!

Can You Let the New Ghostbusters* Movie Be Good?*

There are a few remakes out there that are better than or equal to their original. The Coen Brother’s True Grit is arguably better than the John Wayne version. My dad would have punched me in the face if he was alive to read that! But that is kind of the point, isn’t it? Beauty is in the eye of the moviegoer. I have heard many youngsters tell me that the new Star Wars The Force Awakens is better than the original films. Blasphemy! Some even say that the Jar Jar episodes were better. Lies! But to this generation, the reboots of our favorite films are now theirs. Yes, there was a Poltergeist when I was a kid, and yes it was damn good!

It’s tough when people mess with your nostalgia. Then sometimes a Pokemon Go comes around and life is good until you walk into a bus.

By all means, go see Ghostbusters, just don’t expect it to hold up to the original. And if you’re going, don’t be the guy that takes it it too serious and ruins it for everyone else. Let it stand on it’s own. Maybe it’s awesome, or maybe it’s not, either way it won’t cause, “Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!”
