Hotels, motels, inns. These are places of refuge for the weary and homesick traveler. Checking in, relaxing, and finally laying down to sleep, there is no worse feeling than having all the serenity interrupted by the supernaturally unexplained. For those looking to travel soon, here are 10 haunted hotels worth checking out.

Battery Carriage House Inn, Charleston South Carolina

Built in 1843, this charming inn provides a real-world Southern delight in terms of hospitality and color. Spacious, ornate, and decorated with historic perfection, the Battery Carriage House Inn also is never truly vacant. There are several haunted spots at this inn, with the busiest being in Room 8 where a ghost that manifests as a headless torso is known to awaken visitors in the dead of night. One possible explanation for the headless spirit is the fact that trees on site outside Room 8 were used to hang pirates centuries ago.

Not to be outdone, doors down in Room 10, another ghost dubbed “The Gentleman” haunts the room. Guests have reported seeing a tall, slender looking man of delicate appearance who if seen, leaves behind a rather pleasant soap scent to the room.

French Market Inn, New Orleans, Louisiana

Situated right on the Mississippi, this centuries-old inn was once a hotspot for those rough travelers who landed on the shores via the steamboats and ships. Parts of the brick in the inn are original from the hundreds of years previous when a section of this place was originally a bakery. Strange shadow figures and odd sounds are a common report of visitors. In the middle of the night, the faintest sound of squeaking hoist chains can be heard as well.

The older part of the inn has had reports of a ghost that has been known to leave bloody red handprints on guests pillows upon waking in the morning. Today the French Quarter Inn is a very quaint, and functional place to stay amongst the hustle of New Orleans, just be sure to check your pillow in the morning!

1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, Eureka Springs, Arkansas

Naturally built in 1886, the exclusive Crescent Hotel & Spa has all the offerings of any luxury hotel for those looking to be pampered while on a getaway. However, for those looking for a bit more of a paranormal experience won’t be disappointed either. Spirits have reported being seen by visitors in the form of a wispy fog-like appearance. Dragging low to the ground, people have had enormously large cold spots pressed against their legs and had them bumped by unseen forces.

One of the top requested rooms in the hotel is Room 419 that is said to be haunted by a nurse who once lived there named Theodora. Guests have reported leaving their rooms very messy only to return a short time later to find things most tidy and rearranged. In fact, they report having seen objects slowly move across the room and return to their natural position by this nurse spirit. And if it’s orbs you’re after, Room 218 is notorious for all the different orbs that have been captured over the years floating around the room.

The Cavalier Hotel, Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Cavalier was constructed during the 1920s and was a popular spot for many wealthy celebrities at the time. Adolph Coors, the actual founder of Coors Beer stayed here often, however, he also fell to his untimely death from a 6th story window. Visitors who stay on this particular floor are said to feel a small gush of wind from an unknown direction. Also, guests have reported hearing a thud outside on the grounds where Coors body was found decades ago.

Perhaps the most frightening is that of an unknown Army soldier who haunts the staircases and tells guests not to go upstairs. During World War II, parts of the hotel were used as an Army barracks of sorts and a shipwreck carrying bodies back from Europe with American soldiers happened. In the short term, the bodies were kept at the hotel until they were removed and sent to their final resting places, but apparently, their spirits linger there to this day.

Radisson Hotel Grand Island, Niagara Falls, New York

In the late 1800s, the Grand Island area had a supervisor official installed to monitor the area. Soon after moving there, his mansion burned to the ground and along with it his youngest daughter Tanya. Fast forward to 1977, the hotel chain Holiday Inn constructed an elaborate hotel over the area where the mansion once stood. Soon after construction, the hauntings began. Guests reported a little girl in a white nightgown attempting to wake them up while they were sleeping.

Other times, they report hearing a wailing child scream in an adjacent room only for management to reveal that the room is unoccupied. The most chilling is a guest waking up to see his children playing with a strange girl in a white dress in the room. When the father rousts from the bed, the girl darts into the bathroom and shuts the door. The father goes over and opens the bathroom door to find the inside completely empty! Eventually, the Holiday Inn sold the property to the Radisson chain and it is still quite an active location.

Emily Morgan Hotel by Hilton, San Antonio, Texas

A Hilton hotel property that is officially the “hotel of the Alamo”, the Emily Morgan’s grounds have seen their share of bloodshed over the years in the battle for Texas. Before Hilton took over, the building was used as a mortuary, psychiatric ward, and hospital. Today the upper floors, in particular, the 7th, 12th, and 14th, are the most active. Electrical issues are the chief complaint as the lights in a room flicker on and off, as do the television sets.

Guestroom phones have rung in the middle of the night to nobody on the other end. Disembodied spirits are seen, that in particular of a woman in a white dress who appears to wonder looking for something lost. Of all things, one ghost has been known to run bath water for guests while they are away from their rooms ensuring their stay has hospitality coming from both the living and the supernatural.

Quality Inn Jameson, Crestview, Florida

Built in 2000, this hotel in the Choice chain is considered fairly new by haunting age standards. The earliest reports are of a middle-aged man who is seen impatiently waiting in front of the elevators. At other times, he’s seen on different floors posed in front of the same elevators, always waiting hurriedly. His sightings are fairly tame compared to the horrors some guests have experienced.

Happening almost always to male occupants, they report being awoken by a headless woman in a white dress that is covered in blood! Sometimes she is seen while a male guest is fully awake and she enters the room mysteriously and then fades and passes right through the wall. The origin of both the headless woman and the elevator man are a mystery to this day.

Gettysburg Hotel, Gettysburg, Virginia

Built in 1797, this is one of the oldest hotels in the United States. Along with such a lengthy business history, the hotel is haunted by a Civil War nurse named Rachel. Guests report items floating across their rooms, as well as clothes being folded and mysteriously put away in the drawers. Other times they speak of a cool breeze of zero origins to pass through the room, followed by a feeling of comfort.

This hotel also has one of the rare distinctions of actually embracing such paranormal activity and hosts ghost tours on the premises and even boasts of a “Ghostly Encounter Hotel Package”.

Bullock Hotel, Deadwood, South Dakota

Deadwood, South Dakota became famous in the late 1800s as gold rush fever hit. Businessman Seth Bullock built the hotel to help capitalize on all people looking to spend time staying in the area. Bullock passed away in 1919, but his ghost still haunts the hotel. Staff have reported at odd times, when there is no hotel business to tend to and they’re merely standing around, a glass may break or vase get moved by Bullock’s ghost, as to somehow stay busy and keep the hotel looking pristine.

Guests report lights in their rooms being turned off if too many of them are on, a supernatural sign from Bullock that frugality knows no bounds. In the bar area, bar stools have been known to gently be pushed back into a position aligned with bar tables so to keep things orderly. Other times staff and guests feel like they’re being watched, no doubt Bullock is making sure his hotel is run with supernatural authority to this day.

Hotel Retlaw, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin

Built in 1922, the Hotel Retlaw was constructed as part of a greater chain of hotels in the northern Wisconsin area. The hotel itself has a small series of tunnels built underneath it that were used for running alcohol during prohibition days. It was actually placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. However, with all the decorated history, the place does have its share of paranormal activity.

Room 717 is the epicenter of the majority of the activity. Screams of both a man and woman can be heard at all hours of the day and night. Other times, guests report being shoved or having their hair pulled in the middle of the night. Banging and stomping within the walls is another reported activity that goes on at all times. Downstairs in the Crystal Ballroom, cold spots are notorious, no matter the weather or the dress of a guest. Staff reports the faint sound of music playing from the ballroom when nobody is in there, as well as a ghost couple that can be seen dancing. While the hotel’s activity is strong, it is not considered malevolent and it boasts a fairly robust business to this day.

The Ghost of Theodosia Burr

Paranormal enthusiasts agree, that whenever a person tends to die either an incredibly violent or sudden death, that their spirit remains here on Earth. Something about the energy of such a living person that is taken in a way, leaves an indelible imprint on things. Of all people, a former Vice President of the United States, his very daughter suffered such a fate and is said to still be haunting to this very day.

Who was Theodosia Burr?

In 1801, Aaron Burr was selected to serve as Vice President to then President-elect Thomas Jefferson. Burr’s only surviving child to adulthood was Theodosia. He and his wife took special care with young Theodosia and made sure that she was privy to a rather luxurious upbringing. She had the finest education, mastering many languages and even music. Theodosia was taught how to command herself in the political society at the time and was a very remarkable young woman. With such qualities, many suitors came and she felt drawn to Joseph Alston, a wealthy young landowner from South Carolina with political aspirations. Vice President Burr was content with his daughter’s choice and agreed to let her marry him and move to South Carolina.

Upon arriving in South Carolina, Joseph began a campaign to become governor, and due to his wife being so highly educated, he let her run several of the land properties that he owned. Before long, Theodosia became homesick for her father and mother and wrote to them often. Her sadness didn’t last as she soon gave birth to a son that she and Joseph named Aaron, after her father. Like herself, she ensured young Aaron the exact sort of upbringing as her, replete with high education studies, languages, and budding marksmanship. Tragedy struck them in 1812 when young Aaron developed malaria and died.

Her melancholia was immense and Joseph agreed it was best she returns home to her parents for the Christmas holidays in December of 1812. Joseph, now Governor of South Carolina, ensured she travel by sea up the eastern coast by private charter to her parents. The War of 1812 was still being settled and Joseph as Governor, couldn’t leave his state. He did, however, formally write a pass to Theo and the small ship she was taking in case the British forces intercepted them for any reason. On December 31, 1812, in Georgetown, South Carolina, Joseph ensured his wife Theodosia was onboard the ship, formally called the Patriot. He gave her the pass he had written and kissed her goodbye. It was the last time he would ever see his wife again.

How did Theodosia Burr die?

Days overdue, word was sent that Theodosia never made it to her parents. It was believed her charter passed near Cape Hatteras, which infamously had been known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”, due to all the ships that sank in the area. Declared to be dead, both Joseph and Theodosia’s parents were heartbroken, especially after they held out hope for months that she would return.

Few years passed before captured pirates began to confess to their crimes either in courts or on their deathbeds. Surviving records are controversial, but a small breakthrough came from a newspaper in New York, The Brooklyn Eagle. In it was a sensationalist article about a pirate named Frank Burdick who claimed he and his crew had captured the Patriot somewhere off the coast of the Outer Banks, North Carolina. The Patriot’s crew were slaughtered and their goods plundered while Theodosia was forced to walk the plank and she drowned in the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the goods on board was a painting of herself that she intended to give as a gift to her father. Burdick is said to have taken it due to its high-quality construction, and eventually re-gifted it to another family years later. The family, in turn, used the portrait as payment to an elderly doctor who eventually had it overturned to the Walpole Library at Yale University.

The Ghost of Theodosia Burr

The ghostly spirit of Theodosia has been seen in many places associated with her previous life. The infamous Georgetown dock where she last saw her husband is one of the more popular spots and there are accounts of fisherman seeing a young woman with black hair in a white dress wandering out before fading away. Another ghostly spot is on the banks of Nags Head Beach, North Carolina. Beachgoers report seeing a woman in a white dress wandering frantically, looking lost. Whenever approached, again she fades slowly away.

The most heartbreaking of Theodosia’s ghostly appearances is in Battery Park, the Lower Manhattan area of New York City. After his Vice Presidency, Burr lived in in the city and died nearby in Staten Island in 1836. His ghost haunts the Battery Park sea wall, as this was where he was to originally pick up his beloved daughter. People are said to have seen both his ghost wondering the sea wall, and being accompanied by a woman in a white dress with black hair, no doubt the spirit of Theodosia. A bittersweet ending that both father and daughter spirits are present while neither are aware that the other is finally with them.

It is no secret that Guillermo Del Toro is not directing the film, but has instead shifted his duties to producing and writing the screenplay. Alongside him in the screenplay writers room are veteran screenwriters Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan. Those names sound familiar? They should because they’re the infamous horror writers behind the SAW film franchise series. As far as directing goes, Del Toro entrusted Andre Ovredal with the film. If his name sounds familiar that’s because he’s the director behind 2010’s cult hit, Trollhunter.

Children’s Stories?

Del Toro, Melton, and Dunstan are not solely responsible for the plot of the film. Scary Stories To Tell In the Dark is actually a children’s horror novel of the same name. The original novel was a series of three children’s books written by author Alvin Schwartz and magnificently illustrated by the great Stephen Gammell. Written for the scope of the preteens, the books are also anything but subtle. Such terrifying stories as Hearse Song and Ghost With Bloody Fingers are still horror classics.

Casting has been made known. Actor Dean Norris of AMC’s hit show Breaking Bad, has been cast in a secret role. Lorraine Toussaint from the popular Netflix show, Orange Is the New Black, is cast and rumored to appear in a very paranormal capacity. Gil Bellows, fresh off of Amazon’s Patriot and remembered by many as the young inmate, Tommy, in The Shawshank Redemption, has been cast in an unknown role.

As the heart of the film will revolve around a teenage ensemble comprising of mostly unknown young actors and actresses such as Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza, Austin Abrams, Gabriel Rush, Austin Zajur and Natalie Ganzhorn.

Lionsgate and Del Toro have gone to incredible lengths to keep the plot lines in the film as secret as possible. The only official plot point that has been leaked revolves around the main character named Stella, who along with her friends are blamed for a Halloween prank, only to find out that something far more sinister and terrifying is responsible and hiding out in their town.

Keeping the look and feel of the books?

In late August 2018, a fan of the book series reached out to Del Toro on Twitter, asking as well as begging him to confirm that the scary and terrifying illustrations of the book series drawn by Gammell will be preserved and shown in the film. Ever the minimalist, Del Toro replied with only the word “yes”.

The Black Dahlia Murder

The city of Los Angeles has thousands of real-life stories of actors and actresses who venture there seeking fame and fortune in the film world. For the large majority of them, they are dismissed after tense auditions and forced to either seek other opportunities in the film world or just give up the notion altogether. In 1947, Elizabeth Short was one such aspiring actress, whose big break never came. Along with Hollywood’s rejection, her dismembered and blood-drained corpse was found lying in the middle of a busy Los Angeles street. The most famous and unsolved murder of the time was to become known as the Black Dahlia Murder.

Elizabeth Short

Elizabeth Short born in 1924, was a native of Boston, Massachusetts. She was one of five daughters born to her parents Cleo and Phoebe Short. Living a middle-class lifestyle at a young age was about to come to a screeching halt as the Stock Market Crash of 1929 had the family reeling. Shortly thereafter, Cleo went missing. It was thought that he had committed suicide as his car was found abandoned on a nearby bridge.

However, in 1942, Phoebe received a letter from Cleo stating that he was in fact very much alive and had fled to make a better life in California. At the time Elizabeth became diagnosed with an asthma condition and at her doctor’s suggestion, a move to California would be beneficial to her health. A year later she joined her long lost father near the San Francisco Bay area. The relationship didn’t last long, and having such a great affinity for films, Elizabeth struck out for Los Angeles.

During the days, Elizabeth hit as many auditions as she could seeking any part that was available for stage or screen. In the evening, she moonlighted as a cocktail waitress trying to make any connection to an agent or producer that she came across. Distracting her from her goal as an actress was an aspiring married salesman named Robert Manley. Much about their relationship was unknown as they were known to travel to San Diego at off times for small getaways. January 9, 1947, after a return trip from San Diego, Manley dropped Short off at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel where she was to meet her sister who would be flying in from Boston for a visit. This was the last time Manley saw her alive.

The Black Dahlia Murder

On the morning of January 18, 1947, a woman and her daughter out for a morning stroll to nearby Leimert Park, came across a most unusual body on Norton Avenue in the grass area. At first, she perceived the body to be that of a department store mannequin because of its dismembered and stiffened limb appearance. Upon closer inspection, the woman realized it was no mannequin, but that of a human. The Los Angeles Police Department responded and investigated the scene.

The body was that of a white female who had been completely sawed in half at the waist. Medical examiners found that the body had been completely drained of blood, thus giving the corpse a bright white appearance. The body parts had been scrubbed completely clean with was what presumed to be a gasoline-like substance that eliminated any stains. One and a half feet away, the lower torso was found in relation to the upper one. The intestines from it were folded and neatly tucked underneath the buttocks of the corpse. Various two-inch slices and gashes to both the upper and lower torso were made by a knife of some type. The most disturbing was that the killer used this same knife to slice the upper cheeks of the mouth on the corpse, giving it a very elongated and grotesque smile.

An autopsy revealed the official cause of death to be hemorrhaging caused by head trauma. Short was positively identified via her fingerprints that matched up with an arrest in 1943 for petty crime. Journalist William Randolph Hearst’s The Examiner newspaper gave her the name of “Black Dahlia” as they had discovered she had last been seen wearing a tailored black suit dress that paired well against her jet black hair that was often seen with a freshly plucked dahlia flower in it.

The Black Dahlia Murderer Announces Himself, Kind Of.

The media sensation was immediate and her death became among the first in Los Angeles to be heavily publicized in hopes of finding clues that may lead to the killer. Just days after death was in the news, James Richardson who was the editor of Hearst’s Examiner received a very bizarre phone call from a man. He claimed in no uncertain terms to be Elizabeth Short’s killer and stated he wanted to soon turn himself into the local authorities. But not before he mailed Elizabeth’s personal items to their newsroom.

On January 24, 1947, a United States Postal employee discovered a rather large envelope that was addressed to The Examiner. What made the discovery so bizarre is that there was no physical handwriting to it. Instead, a mishmash of newspaper and magazine letter cutups were used to address the envelope so that the handwriting and return address could not be validly traced. Los Angeles Police was called and the envelope was opened and its contents were shocking.

Inside was Elizabeth Short’s birth certificate, an assortment of photographs, business cards, an address book. Even stranger was the fact that the items were thoroughly cleaned with gasoline similar to how Elizabeth’s body was found. A latent print was discovered on the inside envelope lip and it was sent away to the FBI forensics lab for testing only to be determined that the results were inconclusive and matched to nobody.

At the exact same time that the envelope was delivered to the examiner, exactly two miles away on Norton Avenue where Short’s body was discovered, her handbag and matching pair of black suede shoes were placed atop sidewalk garbage. As police collected the evidence, the smell and presence of gasoline further confirmed that the killer had made the extra effort to see that these were void of traceable fingerprints as well. However, there was one key piece of evidence, the address book.

Who Killed Elizabeth Short?

Police quickly recognized the name of Mark Hansen in the address book. He was known in Los Angeles as a very wealthy theater and nightclub entrepreneur. Short had been a frequent patron of Hansen’s establishments and known to be seen alone with him. Things soured one evening when she spurned his sexual advances. Hansen was interviewed thoroughly by detectives, but ultimately had numerous alibis that had placed him somewhere else at the time of Short’s murder.

Combing through the address book, detectives confronted and interviewed a staggering one hundred and forty-seven potential suspects. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department as well as California State Patrol offered their assistance, including the FBI as well. Local politician Lloyd Davis offered a staggering ten thousand dollar reward for information leading to Short’s killer. This was a controversial move as it further muddled the suspect pool as many people desperate for cash turned over a multitude of names.

Hope seemed to be waning until The Examiner received another contact from Short’s killer. No mashed-in newspaper cutups, this time the letter was handwritten and bizarrely stated,

“Here it is. Turning in Wed., Jan. 29, 10 am. Had my fun at police. Black Dahlia Avenger”.

Toying with authorities that the killer would turn themselves in, police eventually agreed the killer had no real intentions of doing so when The Examiner received another handwritten letter saying,

“Have changed my mind. You would not give me a square deal. Dahlia killing was justified”.

Theories on just who might be the killer had detectives scouring any and all Los Angeles contacts who associated with short. Sensational yellow journalism sparked a controversy that Short was a prostitute who spurned the wrong client, others labeled her as a nightclub tease who went too far at teasing men.

Leads and false confessions finally had police at a complete dead end. The final step at a lead came with examinations to Short’s body since her torso had been meticulously cut in half, the local medical schools were looked at as the killer could possibly have been in a doctor. Dr. George Hodel was rumored to be involved as a grand jury report from 1949 contained an actual wiretapping recording of his phone where he all but said that he was the killer.

Did the bellhop kill her?

Over the years the unsolved crime faded away as others popped up that took over the headlines. One of the most absolute and lasting suspect theories out there involves a bellhop for the Biltmore Hotel. Leslie Dillon worked for the hotel as well as being a former mortician and turned out to be friends with earlier suspect, Mark Hansen. Further research believed that Hansen, who incidentally trained as a medical student in Sweden years prior, helped murder Short along with Dillon.

The prevailing theory is that Short discovered, through her friendship with Hansen, that he and Dillon were going to defraud a series of hotel investors. When she learned too much of his crime with Dillon, they are believed to have killed her in the Aster Motel of Los Angeles. The morning Short’s body was discovered, the owner of the motel had discovered that overnight one of his motel rooms had been festooned with an abnormal amount of blood and other bodily fluids. This motel was only a mere two miles from the site of where the body was discovered. Whether it was Dillon or Hansen that possibly murdered Short in that particular motel has never been conclusively proven.

To this day, the case remains both unsolved and unofficially open as a cold case. Not long after her murder, a California lawmaker taken aback by the potential sex slaying crime insisted that a formal registry of sex offenders be kept. This was to be the first ever sex offender registry created in the United States. Short’s body was interred in a cemetery in nearby Oakland, California and to this day, visitors of all types pay their respects and are infamous for leaving bundles of dahlias there on the headstone as a somber and respected tribute.

The series will focus very loosely on the actual Black Dahlia case itself, and more on one of the top suspects who was never thoroughly investigated enough, Dr. George Hodel. This will be told through the eyes of the main character, his granddaughter, Fauna Hodel.

Inspiration from the show comes directly from the real-life Fauna Hodel and the book she wrote about her grandfather and the case called, One Day She’ll Darken, that was a hit with publishers in 2008. Quite possibly the closest source material to one of the most famous unsolved crimes ever, it looks back and covers her family’s darkest secrets.

Creatively, both on camera and behind the scenes is the popular Star Trek star, Chris Pine. Serving as a producer on this, he is joined by Patty Jenkins, director of Wonder Woman and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 fame. Season 2?

Television network TNT will broadcast the show and add it to their newest lineup as a Suspense Collection series and if popular enough, a second season is a high possibility. Previous entries to the Suspense Collection series also include The Alienist which documented a child’s death in turn of the century New York City when the police commission was headed by none other than future President Theodore Roosevelt.

Yes, the film is happening!

It has been years since a new Candyman film was released, with the most recent being Candyman: Day of the Dead that was released on DVD and yes….on VHS in 1999! Jordan Peele is Directing

It is set to be produced in house by his production studio, Monkeypaw Productions and fronted by Universal Pictures, so horror fans can breathe easy knowing that their beloved franchise is in the hands of one of the top filmmakers in the Hollywood motion picture world today.

Who is playing Candyman?

Die-hard fans of the series and the horror cinema world have a special place in their heart for the original Candyman actor, Tony Todd. He brought a particular haunting majesty to such a terrifying character. Will he be in the newest film to reprise his role as Candyman? Or perhaps cameo? Flashback? As of right now, Todd’s role in the new film has not been decided and a new Candyman has not even been cast. Candyman is actually a creation of literary horror genius Clive Barker. It was taken from one his infamous Books of Blood anthologies called The Forbidden. The 5th Series of Books of Blood took place in England where a young graduate student stumbles across the feared urban legend of Candyman while writing a university thesis. Clive Barker in fact wrote and produced the 1992 smash hit horror film himself.

Child’s Play 2019

As one of the most recognizable horror icons of the last thirty years, Chucky from the Child’s Play franchise is one of the most popular in the horror cinema universe. The story has spawned half a dozen sequels and grossed more than $255,000,000 in ticket sales alone when adjusted for inflation. As any fan knows, Chucky may be down but is never out!

There will be a new Child’s Play film in 2019.

It is indeed official that on June 21, 2019, a brand new film will open from MGM films as a theatrical release.

Child’s Play Cast

Titled Child’s Play, the film is being considered as more of a soft remake of the 1988 original horror classic. This will be noted as the first film in the series that will not involve original creator and writer, Don Mancini. It will instead be helmed by famed Norwegian horror director and writer, Lars Klevberg. Child horror film actor Gabriel Bateman will star as the troubled Andy Barclay while former comedy actress Aubrey Plaza will co-star as his harrowed mother, Karen Barclay. Star of Atlanta, Brian Tyree Henry, will play a detective investigating the murderous doll.

Chucky is a robot?

Plot details are being kept under very tight wraps. While it is known that this film will be a remake to a degree, there are certain adjustments being made. The biggest and most talked about “upgrade” to Chucky is that he will be “robot doll” of some type. Fans of the series take this as the doll will have a considerable artificial intelligence design that will make him an unstoppable killing machine!

Will Chucky speak?

Currently, the voice behind Chucky in the new film has yet to be named. Longtime veteran voice actor of the doll, Brad Dourif, has said that he was not involved this time. If this holds true, it certainly matches with plot details of the entire “voodoo” origin being scrapped in favor of a more realistic storyline. Others have speculated that the doll will not have any particular voice at all and is to remain both deadly as well as silent. Only upon the film’s release will the truth be known.

A new storyline for Chucky

The current Child’s Play film will run a storyline complete separate from creator Don Mancini’s newest project, a Child’s Play television series. Not only will the television series feature the voice talent’s of Brad Dourif, but it will also feature his daughter, actress Fiona Dourif who played a very integral part in Mancini’s 2017 feature, Cult of Chucky. The television series is in fast development and Mancini insists that Chucky’s terrifying reign is nowhere near over and in fact, it’s just beginning to start up again with the possibility of multiple Chucky’s to co-exist!

The Legend of Krampus

Christmas Day is the absolute greatest day for children everywhere. For those young enough, they go to bed with sweet anticipation of what Santa Claus will bring them overnight. They awaken in a flash the next morning and tear open with reckless fury anything that’s wrapped in the shiniest of packaging with elaborate bows. It’s pure unfettered mayhem at first glance, but ultimately a child’s memory of what happens on such a day brings them joy to cherish for years to come.

The generosity of Old St. Nick seemingly knows no bounds as he is renowned both the world and history over, as the most generous giver of presents. However, for children and even some adults in the Alpine States region of Europe (Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, etc) they do not clamor in joy at the prospect of presents and treats to be delivered by St. Nick. Instead, they lay in fear of a gruesome twisted demon creature with ungodly power who prowls the night looking for those who have wronged the world. He is known terrifyingly through history as Krampus.

Who is Krampus?

Krampus seems to have originated from seventeenth-century Germanic folklore that was partially influenced by Norse mythology. Considered to be the offspring of the Norse deity Hel, a subset ruler of the underworld, Krampus physically resembles anything but human. Myth and legend has Krampus standing anywhere between seven to nine feet tall and covered completely with dark thick fur. The eyes have been described as rather large and piercing, almost bulging out of the face completely. The tongue is also depicted as rather long and forked, which parts two rows of the most jagged and menacing teeth one has ever seen complete with imposing fangs.

There is a tail that is somewhat long and does flip and twist around the body while standing on both legs that are bent like that of a goat. The feet, in particular, are of interest as most depictions have Krampus sporting two black hooves. However, other appearances have just one hoof present while the other is actually a human foot. There has been no reveal as to why Krampus would have one human foot, but a prevailing theory now is that perhaps Krampus was in fact once human and therefore turned into the beast of today and that human foot is the only real piece left that did not turn. Horns also spew forth from the skull in an intimidating manner, while the hands are twisted into a pair of razor-sharp claws. In fact, the Germanic translation of Krampus means just that….claw.

As with tradition in Europe, Krampus is believed to begin the night of terror on what is called, Krampusnacht which translates to Krampus Night, in German. This is traditionally held on December 5 around midnight before it is officially December 6. This is an important date because to some households in the Alpine States, this is known as Nikolaustag, the night when St. Nick comes around with presents for the children. Therefore, the children truly do not know who they will be visited by that evening.

What does Krampus do?

Krampus is the complete antithesis of St. Nick and brings about total dread, pain, and misery to supposed misbehaved children and some adults. Carried upon his furry shoulders is a sack that holds various implements of torture. One of the most common items being a very intimidating rod or stick that is used to physically beat the child or adult if caught. Earlier Germanic folklore actually had Krampus taking away the children only to eat them later!

A sick trick of the Krampus is to actually steal away a present for the child and leave them with only a pile of sticks or rocks, thus cheating them out of a gift. Any adult that Krampus catches or has on its list, is most likely subject to a thorough scourging with a whip. Other times Krampus physically takes a misbehaving child or adult back to its underground lair where they are kept until they become repentant of whatever crimes that Krampus feels they are guilty of.

Over the centuries though, the Krampus has taken on the status of a cultural legend. When season greeting cards became popular in the nineteenth century, Krampus’s image was imprinted on many cards, thus making his presence widely known to those looking to celebrate the holidays. Like any celebrated occasion, certain sects of humanity actually champion Krampus as something of an anti-hero who disciplines out of control children and adults so that society might function better overall as a whole.

There are now events called the Krampus Ball, where it is something of an elaborate masquerade party where attendees don masks that resemble the Krampus and pretend to flog other revelers all in the name of fun. Even in Germany and Austria there are Krampuslaufs, which are street events where people dress up like the Krampus and chase others around the streets trying to strike at them, all in a bizarre homage to Krampus.

Are you safe from Krampus?

For the children who do awaken the next morning, the only sure sign that Krampus has not visited and that they are considered safe and are absolutely no sticks found in the home. Krampus is known to leave a large size amount of sticks for particularly troublesome children which correlates to how badly they’ve behaved. Other times, a child may only find a stick or two and are thus very low on Krampus’s list. But the prevailing theory is if no stick at all is found, then safety is assured and if a present is left by St. Nick, then they are definitely in the clear.

8 Shocking Facts about H.H. Holmes

What’s the clinical definition of a serial killer? According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), it involves two or more killings spread out geographically and over an amount of significant time such as weeks, months, or even years. Ask anyone on the street which serial killer had the most victims, you’ll likely get answers like Jack the Ripper, Ted Bundy, or Jeffery Dahmer. While their crimes were horrific and terrifying, there is another sadistic serial killer in the United States who claimed to have victim levels of over two hundred.

Here are eight rare and shocking facts about H.H. Holmes and his legacy of murderous terror. You know, before you go see Leo in The Devil in the White City.

- H.H. Holmes was born as Herman W. Mudgett in 1861 to a normal farming family in rural New Hampshire. His parents were devout Methodists, but in later years there were long unconfirmed rumors of physical and emotional abuse by his father, accompanied by lone behavior that resulted in him torturing small farm animals which is a classic hallmark for serial killers as children.
- Holmes attended the University of Michigan Medical and Surgery school and he actually graduated according to school records in 1894. He began to work to a degree forensic pathology and had learned to dissect recently deceased people under the apprenticeship of a senior doctor. This is another instance where it’s said that Holmes perfected his vivisection and surgical skill on the many cadavers he had access to.

- Insurance fraud via the cadavers was one of the ways Holmes had enough money to move to Chicago. He then changed his name from Herman to Henry Howard Holmes so as to avoid any connection to the scams he ran. He also previously worked in a drugstore in Philadelphia where medicine was given to a small child who then died unexpectedly. His move to Chicago was a strategic one, as to avoid further police inspection.
- Holmes had a three-story pharmacy constructed that also contained a jewelry counter, retail stores, and a top floor hotel. To have enough employees, Holmes put out newspaper ads looking for employees eager to work in the retail and hospitality business with the only caveat being, they all had to sign up for high priced life insurance policies as employees. Money was tight due to the turn of the century economy and many signed up right away to work Mr. Holmes. This was later referred to as the “Murder Castle” by authorities.
- The construction of the Murder Castle was quite complex at the time. The hotel rooms alone numbered over one hundred. During the construction, Holmes made sure that virtually all the rooms were made to be soundproof so as no other guests could audibly hear that others were being murdered. Also, there was an ingenious piping of gas vents that allowed Holmes to randomly asphyxiate guests in their rooms at any moment. Trap doors, chutes, and glorified dumbwaiters throughout the building’s hallways invariably led to the hellish confines of the basement, which itself was bondage racks, solitary confinement cells, dissection tables, and miniature crematory.

- Murder was entirely random in Holmes mind. Unlucky guests where either consciously or unconsciously taken to the basement where he sometimes vivisected them for personal interest. Other times for extra money, he would sell the cadavers or whole skeletons to medical schools. Reports have stated that the crematorium was semi-operational at times and therefore unreliable due to the number of bodies Holmes was trying to dispose of. To hide the evidence and get rid of the bodies faster, Holmes employed the use of discarding entire bodies into giant tubs of acid. Over the course of a day or two, the acid he used (which he had access to by being a pharmacist still) would completely render the bodies and bones to a slushy pulp that was either further burned, or buried in a ditch or plot around town.

Holmes downfall came not at the expense of an escaped victim in the Murder Castle, but rather over an insurance fraud scam involving horses he purchased while on a business trip to Texas. A Texas judge issued a warrant for his arrest and with the help of the Chicago police were led to the Murder Castle and it’s grisly, and murderous contents. Veteran Chicago police were said that there were so many dismembered body parts floating in acid as well as partially cremated remains, that they honestly could not ever come up with an accurate count of just the current number of victims found.
October of 1895, Holmes was put on trial for his crimes. He had no remorse and was quoted in court as saying,

“I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing — I was born with the ‘Evil One’ standing as my sponsor beside the bed where I was ushered into the world, and he has been with me since.”
Hearst Newspaper reporters got to him and paid him a sum of $7,500 to confirm how many people he killed. Holmes nonchalantly told them twenty-seven, but the evidence provided by the prosecution far superseded that. In short order, he was found guilty and sentenced to death by hanging. On May 7, 1896, Holmes was hung on the prison gallows, however, the noose was never knotted properly and his neck never broke. Instead, he slowly strangled to death for over twenty minutes without any intervention from the executioner. Holmes’s last words before his hanging?

“Take your time. And don’t bungle it”.

Zombieland 2 Hits Theaters in 2019

Nearly ten years after the first Zombieland, the sequel is always on the horror fan film wish list. And your wish is Sony Pictures demand.

Here is what we know about Zombieland 2 so far:

It is officially happening!

That’s right, it has been a long wait for horror fans, but in July 2018, Sony Pictures proudly announced that the film has a script and is going into production January 2019. Even better? The release date is confirmed for October 11, 2019, just in time for the Halloween season!

The original cast is back!

The four principal actors and actresses from the first film are all signed on to include Jesse Eisenberg, Academy Award Winner Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin. There is no word yet if comedy actor Bill Murray will somehow be able to cameo in the second film as well. But if it is anything like the first one, keeping his appearance a total surprise just makes the film that much better!

Zombies Rule the show.

Zombies are still the big bad in the film, however early reports of the script have detailed some sort of new, highly evolved zombies in it that will keep the horror action fresh and very original.

The Zombieland Creators are coming back too.

There won’t be any creative production turnover with the sequel. Zombieland’s Reuben Fleischer is once again directing the film. Dave Callaham and Rhett Reese are fresh off Wonder Woman 1984 and the Deadpool film series and have agreed to write the sequel to their original screenplay.

Zombieland 2: Electric Boogaloo?

Zombieland 2 seems to be the official running title for now. As with most Hollywood film productions, the titles are always subject to last minute changes. Some of the other rumored possible titles are, Another Day in Zombieland, Zombieworld, and Zombieland: Double Tap. Of course, it won’t be Zombieland 2: Electric Boogaloo. But it should.

No Seattle?

The film is rumored to keep up the tradition of the main characters using city names instead of their real ones to prevent any emotional attachment to one another. The original had Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita, and Little Rock. Early script leaks have a new set of names being used such as Reno, Cleveland, Madison, and even Tampa Bay. With more names to be found out, it’s anyone’s guess if these characters will be heroes or villains.

A new Zombieland film every ten years?

Yes please! Director Reuben Fleischer recently revealed this to be a possibility when he was pitched the idea by Emma Stone herself. He said, “Emma said something that just really made me feel so happy the other day which was, ‘We should just make a Zombieland movie every ten years. It should be like Boyhood or something where like every ten years we just make a Zombieland movie as a touchstone and see where these characters are. And I can’t imagine a better way to spend the rest of my life is that every ten years getting to work with that cast.” Will it happen? We might have to wait ten years to find out, but until then enjoy the new film in theaters October 11, 2019!

Pet Sematary 2019

In 1989 the horror world was introduced to the grim and ultra-dark film, Pet Sematary. Based upon a book of the same name by author Stephen King, director Mary Lambert crafted a terrifying new feature film that had audiences thinking twice about the mortality of not only their pets but themselves as well. King’s original novel was so scary that he himself actually refused to have it published for the longest time on the belief that audiences just might not be able to handle the dark subject matter. A surefire cult classic and midnight movie special in it’s own right nowadays, Pet Sematary is getting an update with a 2019 release date where its directors are looking to scare an entirely new audience.

Directors Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch of 2014’s fantasy horror thriller, Starry Eyes, have taken on the monumental task of seeing what they can do to up the scare factor for new audiences. To help with translating King’s book into an even creepier screenplay, they are employing veteran horror screenplay guru Jeff Buhler in their mission. He’s gone on record to say that he is looking to bring out the harsh psychological subject matter in the screenplay to match the book’s original taboo content. To round out the production mix, veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is stepping in to see that the film is fully crafted from beginning to end. Bonaventura is a popular producer of the Transformers film series which has grossed well over two billion dollars at the box office, making his input on the film quite valuable.

For the first timer, Pet Sematary has five roles that are absolutely crucial to the heart of the plot. Star of the Planet of the Apes series and the recently nominated Chappaquiddick, actor Jason Clark will be stepping into the role of Dr. Louis Creed. His wife in the film will be played by multi-independent film award winner Amy Seimetz, while his two children are to be played by first-timers, Jete Laurence and the twins of Hugo and Lucas Lavoie. The co-starring titular role of Jud Crandall will be played by none other than veteran character actor of stage and screen, John Lithgow.

With filming having recently wrapped the first week of October, Paramount Pictures is in full post-production mode now. The fan anticipation for Pet Sematary is so profound that within twenty-four hours, just one version of the film’s trailer received over five million views on Youtube alone.

Ed and Lorraine Warren Rare Paranormal Investigations

Ed and Lorraine Warren are the most popular and well documented paranormal investigators in the entire world. With a case catalog that spans back to 1952, they have investigated thousands of paranormal claims that have covered many decades. The public today has undoubtedly heard of their most famous cases such as the Amityville Horror House, the Annabelle doll, Enfield Haunting, and the house from The Conjuring. Here are some of their other lesser-known investigations of The Conjuring ghost hunters, Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The Smurl Family Haunting

In 1974, Jack and Janet Smurl moved into an older home in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Not long into their move, the Smurls began to notice extremely foul smells permeating inside the home. Loud and constant bangs on the walls and ceiling kept them awake at night, and even their family dog was picked up and thrown violently against a wall by an unseen force. The most traumatizing event was when Jack was a victim of many sexual assaults by the unseen force in the home.

The events lasted on and off nearly a decade before Ed and Lorraine were called in to investigate the haunted Smurl House. After listening to the complaints from the family, combined with religious provocation, Ed determined that a powerful demon was inhabiting the home. Again utilizing religious provocation, Ed tape recorded the sessions and took them to the local Catholic diocese to procure an exorcism for the family.

At first, several priests came in waves to bless the home formally, and one priest even went so far as to spend a weekend at the home observing the family. However, this priest never found anything sinister. Upon leaving though, the unseen force manifested into an actual dark mass that floated around the home! Eventually, two exorcisms were performed in addition to a Catholic Mass. After nearly a decade of torment, the Smurl family sold the house in 1988, and have reported that nothing has followed them to date.

Demon Murder Trial

The Demon Murder Trial is actually the first court case of its kind to employ the legal defense phrase of “the devil made me do it.” In 1981, Arne Cheyenne Johnson was convicted of first-degree manslaughter for killing his landlord Alan Bono. Arne at the time was dating a single mother named Debbie Glatzel who had an eleven-year-old son named Daniel. He had procured a rental property that needed cleaning up and took Debbie and Daniel with him. While on-site at the property David reported having an encounter with an old man who told them to stay away from the property. David began having visions where the old man transformed into a demonic creature who threatened to capture his soul. Arne and Debbie were disturbed by the boy’s constant visions and dreams that they sought out help from the local Catholic Church.

A priest came to bless the boy, but this proved ineffective as the visions worsened. Ed and Lorraine were called in to investigate. Lorraine, a well-respected clairvoyant, picked up on a powerful black mist that continuously surrounded the child. As the Warrens investigated, the visions got worse, and young David began to exhibit growls, superhuman strength, and even levitation. Worse of all was that in a demonic voice he foretold of Arne committing murder.

During an exorcism facilitated by Ed and Lorraine with up to six priests, Arne mocked and challenged the demon who seemed to have left David’s body and transferred to his. Over the next few days, Arne exhibited the same symptoms as David and on that fateful evening got into a fistfight with Alan Bono over a misunderstanding involving Debbie. Arne fatally stabbed Alan Bono nearly a dozen times. At the trial, Arne attempted to plead not guilty by reason of possession, but a judge was unconvinced. He ended up pleading to manslaughter and serving five years in prison. As for the demonic presence the cause so much havoc? It mysteriously disappeared once the actual murder had been committed.

The White Lady of Union Cemetery

Sitting beside the Easton Baptist Church in Easton Connecticut is the Union Cemetery. The cemetery is believed to be centuries old and is home to the ghostly apparition of a lady dressed all in white. This ghostly woman has been seen since the late nineteenth century. Curious about such paranormal activity in his own backyard, Ed Warren took it upon himself to try and videotape the apparition himself.

On a cold night in late 1990, Ed had arranged a video recorder on a tripod to capture anything moving in the cemetery. Sometime after midnight, roughly six seconds worth of videotape captured a lady in white clothes, floating through the cemetery. Ed was so fascinated by the apparition that he published an entire book dedicated to the ghostly phenomenon, simply titled, Graveyard.

The most popular theory is that the woman died during childbirth and was driven to the graveyard and buried, which partly explains eerie reports of the apparition making crying sounds and sometimes floating through the cemetery gates and out into the middle of Route 59. The ghostly sight has caused many a late night drives to run right through her spirit with a car only to stop and look back to find nobody there. While this particular case does not contain demonic hallmarks, it is one of Ed Warren’s most cherished cases, particularly due to the film footage that he took and kept.

Mr. Entity: The Moffitt Family Poltergeist

California housewife Deborah Moffitt was stunned the first time she witnessed the various apports going on in her home. The mysterious and unseen force would paranormally transport many household objects, in particular, razor-sharp kitchen knives, to rooms all over her house. Before long, Deborah and her husband were receiving mysterious messages written on their mirrors in soap. Surmising that all of this was the work of a ghost, Debbie cheerfully named it, “Mr. Entity.”

As the months went by, Mr. Entity became more and more aggressive, even going so far as to stab butcher knives straight up into the seats of chairs. Frightened by the upfront attempted violence, Debbie reached to various mediums who were chased off by the threat of death by Mr. Entity. She employed the help of the infamous witch, Dr. Evenlyn Paglini whom Mr. Entity mocked in many mirror writings and discounted her reputed occult skills. Even a Native American medicine man was brought in to assist.

Finally in the early 90s, after five years, Deborah got a visit from Ed and Lorraine Warren. She instructed them that the attic was the area of the house that Mr. Entity dwelled. Lorraine took it upon herself to use her clairvoyant skills to put together a picture of what it was she was dealing with. Moments after attempting a rather informal seance, Lorraine reappeared disheveled and exclaimed aloud, “Oh Ed! This is ancient! It’s very old and very ancient!”.

Mr. Entity’s calling card on the mirror was an iblis, which is a crude triangle drawn with a tail hanging out of it. It was found to be related to the djinn, a very old Middle Eastern demonic entity. Given the time, circumstances, and foreign nature, the Warrens were not able to clear the home but were able to help facilitate Debbie and her family in finally ridding themselves of what haunted them to no end.

The Southend Werewolf

Not all of the Warren’s classic case files dealt strictly with demonic entities and possessions. Beginning in 1952, a young man from Essex, England named Bill Ramsey experienced a most unexplained phenomenon. While playing outside one autumn day, he mysteriously was “attacked” by a very cold rush of air. The event was sudden in its appearance and brutal in temperature. Moments after being attacked, he ran and vomited after feeling inundated with a foul stench. As days passed for young Bill, he found himself having incredibly short bursts of anger and rage, as well as periodic bouts of superhuman strength. Nightmares began taking hold of his sleep and he experienced dreams of deep, heavy growls from an unseen creature. The nightmares and fits of rage subsided over the years and he went over fifteen years without an episode. Then one evening he went out with friends to a pub and had to excuse himself to the washroom where he rinsed his face and stared in the mirror, and the reflection of a werewolf looked back at him.

Into the late 1980s, Bill periodically attacked personal friends as well as strangers. Upon fearing an imminent heart attack, Bill was rushed to the hospital only to discover that his werewolf side was emerging. Unknown numbers of responding police officers couldn’t restrain him as he growled, made claw scratches and was animalistic in behavior. Tranquilizer injections could only settle him. Ten days of relentless physical, mental, and emotional tests could not find anything at all wrong with Ramsey’s unexplained werewolf manifestations. As luck would have it, the Warrens were in London on an unrelated case and heard of his lycanthropic possession and immediately began to investigate.

The Warrens were convinced Bill was possessed by a demon that manifested werewolf tendencies in him. Bishop Robert McKenna was a close personal friend of the Warrens and had helped performed many exorcisms upon their recommendations. At once, Ramsey agreed to fly to Connecticut with them to meet McKenna and be freed from his werewolf demon. The night before his exorcism was to be carried out, he attempted to claw and strangle his wife in their hotel room. The next day at his exorcism, he had to be restrained just moments after the ceremony began. He immediately began to growl, foam at the mouth, and become aggressive.

The ceremony was said to have lasted hours with the final portion having to be conducted all in Latin. According to Ed Warren, near the end of the ceremony, Ramsey heaved his body up against the restraints with all his might before slumping over. The werewolf demon fled, and his nightmare was over. Warren is said to have filmed the entire exorcism and had it kept under tight lock and key. As of 1992, Ramsey reported he no longer had any werewolf tendencies or rages, but as of 2018, his whereabouts and status are completely unknown.

Alaska Top Haunt: Fright Night Manor

Anchorage’s Oldest Haunted House

Anchorage’s Fright Night Manor takes top honors in the state of Alaska for the third straight year! Founded in 1985, this mostly family-friendly haunt is looking to secure a new location currently but it will be up and running.

If you like clowns, clowns, and more clowns, this is the place for you. The plan is for a large clown room, separate Nightmare on Elm Street and Zombie areas, and huge spiders. Expect scary 3D effects with your $15 ticket. Great scares around every corner, but not recommended for the very young.

Arkansas Top Haunt: Carpenter’s Mortuary

Undertakers, Morticians and Grave Diggers, oh my!

Charlie Bookout tells us that Carpenter’s Mortuary Spook House is unique in that it occupies a historic 1929 building that once actually served as the Funeral Home for Gentry, Arkansas.

The haunt as it is known today has been successfully scaring thrill-seekers since it opened in 2014, but the artists who run Mortuary Studios have been sharing their passion for the paranormal at this location for over 30 years.

“We only use real ghosts . . . Just kidding,” says Bookout. “There are from 20 to 25 talented actors roaming the halls of Carpenter’s Mortuary Spook House each night.”
