Ed and Lorraine Warren gained popularity with most people when Hollywood started creating movies based on their real-life cases. These worldwide known ghost investigators had a talent for assisting families who moved into haunted homes. Their journey began in the late 1960s, and over the decades, they worked extensively with haunted houses and families who unfortunately lived in them. Let’s delve into the movies that were inspired by the Warrens’ experiences.

Movies Based On Ed and Lorraine Warren’s Investigations

Amityville Horror

Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror is one of the most terrifying films ever made. The film is based on the same book and was released in 1979. The book was based on the haunting experiences of the Lutz family when they moved into the home.

In 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six of his family members in the home on 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. He was eventually convicted of second-degree murder in November 1975. He was sentenced to serve 25 years to life in prison. He died while he was in prison in 2021. Unaware of this story, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the Amityville house in December 1975. The realtor did end up telling them that there were some horrible murders in the home, but that didn’t seem to bother them at all. They felt that it was their dream come true. This house seemed to be a new start for them, and they were ready to raise their family there.

After living there for a very short time, the Lutz family began to experience some unexplainable paranormal events. When they moved into the house, one of George’s friends mentioned that they should get the home blessed by a priest. Neither George nor Kathy were religious, so they didn’t know what that meant.

The Catholic church sent Father Mancuso to their home to bless it. When he went into their home, he felt terrified. He heard a masculine voice telling him to leave the house. He told no one about his visit to the home and allegedly ended up getting very sick with a high fever and blisters after he left the home. The symptoms were much like those of people who claim they have stigmata.

The Real Amityville House

The Real Amityville House

The Lutz family began to experience horrifying paranormal events in their home. Some of the rooms would be swarmed with flies for one second, and then they would vanish. They would also feel a “very strong force” that was trying to push them out of the house. There were stories of green ooze coming out of the walls and the water sometimes turning black in the baths and toilets. Not only this, but the children claimed to see a pig face with red eyes and a demon figure in a white hood. The Lutz family was driven to their breaking point on January 14, 1976. They left everything they owed behind and would never step into the house again.

Ed and Lorraine Warren were called to help the Lutz family with these paranormal events. Lorraine could feel the terrifying spirits in the home, so they did everything they could to help. After being there, the Lutz family wanted nothing else to do with the home.

Rumors have circulated that the Lutz family faked everything to become rich off of this story. Although proof of some of the paranormal events has been found, the Lutz family continues to say that it all happened to them in the Amityville house.

The Haunted

The Haunted was released in 1991, and it was one of the first films to actually use the Warrens as characters. This film didn’t get too much attention when it was released and has practically been forgotten about. It was based on the Smurl family haunting, a case that Ed and Lorraine Warren worked on and spent quite a bit of time on.

Janet Smurl moved into a home in Pittston, Pennsylvania, and felt it was the perfect home for them. It didn’t take long for the family to start encountering paranormal activity. The family would see strange figures walking around their home, and they would hear horrifying sounds at night. Strange stains would also start to show up on the walls of the home.

The Smurl family wasn’t sure how to deal with everything happening in the home. Janet found out about Ed and Lorraine and called them to get some help with these encounters. She felt like someone was trying to push her family out of the home, but she knew they couldn’t leave; they had put everything into this house. The Warrens discovered that there was a lot more going on in the home than anyone ever thought.

The Haunting in Connecticut

The Haunting in Connecticut

Released in 2009, The Haunting in Connecticut, based on the Snedeker House, focused on a family going through a terrible time in their lives. Sara Campbell and her son, Matt, were going through a challenging time in life. Matt, her son, was going through cancer treatments, and she and her husband, Peter, needed to find a home closer to the hospital.

The Snedeker House - The Haunting in Connecticut

The Real Snedeker House

Sara and Peter were also going through a hard time in their marriage. He was an alcoholic, and she was waiting tables and picking up any odd jobs that she could in order to help her son. As the couple discussed finding a rental home, Sara drove by one and knew it was fate. The homeowner was frustrated that no one wanted to live in it. He offered the family a free month if they would move in quickly. This didn’t strike the family as strange, and they felt that this was supposed to be their home.

The family decides that this is a deal they can’t refuse. They move in, and immediately, paranormal events begin to occur. Matt finds some strange pictures in his room, which is in the basement, and then Peter finds out that the home was a funeral home at some point. Matt begins to see visions in the home, and soon, there are figures in his room, and the more they show up, the closer they get to him.

A Haunting in Connecticut got a lot of backlash. Critics claim that Ed and Lorraine Warren sensationalized this entire story, and none of these events ever happened to the family. The Warrens always stood by their story that all of these events did happen inside this house.

The Conjuring Films

The Places and Artifacts from The Conjuring

The Conjuring

The Real Conjuring House

The Real Conjuring House

The Conjuring franchise solidified Ed and Lorraine Warren’s validity in these paranormal cases. The movies began with the paranormal tales from the Perron family and their haunted house. Many critics claim that the first Conjuring film was fictionalized to add to its horror. This movie was one of the first-ever movies to show the Warrens as heroes to those who called them for help. The franchise has made Ed and Lorraine seem more positive than all the rumors about them in the 1970s and 80s.

The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2 featured a family’s home in England. In the 1970s, the family was terrified by a poltergeist. In this film, the Hodgson family experiences a lot of paranormal activity in their home. Interestingly enough, Lorraine actually had a vision during the seance of a demonic nun figure. This ended up being the demon that was haunting the Hodgson family. This was the first film where the demon Valak was introduced into the Conjuring film franchise.

The Real Conjuring 2 House

The Real Conjuring 2 House

In the Hodgson home, some of the children began to show signs that they had been possessed. One of the children, Janet, was seen levitating and growling like a demon. The Warrens found out about their story and wanted to know what was happening in this home. They wanted to be able to prove if this possession was a hoax. Lorraine wasn’t sure that she wanted to get involved after seeing visions of Ed being killed there.

The Warrens did come to see the Hodgson’s home and got help from other paranormal experts. The Warrens felt as if the family was lying to become famous, but later found out that Janet was, indeed, possessed by the demon in the home. Ed and Lorraine ended up saving Janet and her family, and they ended up moving away from the home.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is yet another film in The Conjuring franchise in which Ed and Lorraine Warren appear. This movie is about a man who asks a demon to possess him instead of his girlfriend’s child. Ed Warren watches as the man is possessed, and that is when he suffers from a heart attack. Arne Johnson begins to act very strangely after being possessed.

Arne ended up killing his landlord after he stabbed him 22 times. He told the police that the demon inside of him was what made him do it. The Warrens felt they needed to testify for Arne since they saw the possession and were part of it. However, Arne ends up going to prison no matter how much Ed and Lorraine stand up for him.

The Annabelle Films

The Annabelle Films

Annabelle

Annabelle

The Annabelle movies gave horror lovers a big scare with the face of this creepy doll. A medical student named John Form bought the creepy doll for his expecting wife, Mia. In the movie, it was a porcelain doll, but in real life, Ed and Lorraine Warren kept a Raggedy Ann doll named Annabelle in a glass case.

It turned out that the doll was possessed by the spirit of a girl named Annabelle. Paranormal events began to happen in John and Mia’s home, and as soon as she gave birth to their daughter, Leah, things seemed to get even worse. They contacted a priest to help them; they just wanted peace from this spirit. After the doll disappeared, it reappeared when a woman bought it for her daughter, Debbie. Debbie was a nursing student and took the doll to her home. Her story is seen in the first half of The Conjuring film.

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home is yet another installment of a film inspired by Ed and Lorraine Warren. In this film, the Warrens have a babysitter come over to watch their daughter Judy for one night. The babysitter, Mary Ellen, invites a friend over. Daniela, her friend, goes into the Warrens’ haunted and cursed objects room. As she pokes around, she sees the Annabelle doll and decides to let her out. This ends up causing some horrible paranormal events.

Although most of the events in this movie were made up, fans of the franchise enjoyed it. This movie was dedicated to Lorraine Warren, who died on April 18, 2019.

Other movies seem to be inspired by the Warrens but do not give them much credit in the films themselves. The Nun, The Nun 2, and various seasons of American Horror Story were all inspired by the Warrens in some type of way. All of the movies in The Conjuring franchise pay homage in one way or another to the Warrens and everything that they did for families that faced paranormal events in their homes.

The Conjuring movies have become one of the best horror franchises in horror movie history. Ed and Lorraine Warren were featured in most of these films, as they investigated quite a few haunted locations and took artifacts from a few of the sites where these horrifying events occurred. Let’s take a deeper look at the places and artifacts from The Conjuring.

The Perron Family Estate

The Real Conjuring House

The Conjuring was based on the Perron Family’s paranormal experiences in their Burrillville, Rhode Island home. It was first known as the Old Arnold Estates, and generations of families have lived here. The house is now used as a haunted bed and breakfast and thrill seekers can spend the night here.

The Annabelle doll was one of the artifacts taken from the first Conjuring movie. This doll is locked up in the Warrens’ haunted and cursed museum. The Annabelle doll has been featured in multiple movies in the franchise. The doll doesn’t look anything like the creepy one in the movies; it is an old Raggedy Ann doll. The doll was inhabited by the spirit of a child named Annabelle Higgins. When the Warrens investigated the doll, they claimed it was inhabited by a demonic spirit. The doll has been exorcised, but it was unsuccessful. The Annabelle doll is still locked in a glass case and will never be opened again.

The Perron Family Music Box is another artifact that was taken from the Perron house in the first Conjuring movie. In the movie, the youngest Perron child, April, discovers an old music box in their house. She used it to communicate with a spirit named Rory. He was killed by his mother, Bathsheba. When Lorraine looks at the music box, she sees the face of the child in it. At the end of The Conjuring, Ed and Lorraine take the music box to keep in their room of artifacts. There are rumors that it will still open up and play music on its own.

Ed and Lorraine Warren also took a toy monkey from Perron’s home. They claimed that it was possessed as well. There is only a small glimpse at it in The Conjuring. It is seen when Ed talks to a reporter about what is in the room. He tells him, “Everything you see here is either haunted, cursed, or used in some kind of ritualistic practice. Nothing is a toy. Not even the toy monkey. Don’t touch it!”

The Conjuring 2

The Real Conjuring 2 House

The Conjuring 2 was a movie about a haunting in London, England. The Enfield poltergeist happened in the home of Peggy Hodgson and her children. The family claimed that evil spirits haunted the house. The children say they saw furniture moving and heard knocking on the walls. The family wouldn’t go upstairs, lived in the living room together for 18 months, and were terrified of going anywhere else in the house. Over those 18 months, over 30 people witnessed the haunting in this home.

There is still a lot of speculation that this family made up all of the paranormal events that happened here. There were photos and videos of the events, but some think Peggy made it all up to become famous. The children are all grown up now and have tried to keep their lives as private as possible.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It takes place in 1981 in Brookfield, Connecticut. The Warrens went to help out an eight-year-old boy named David Glatzel. His family was present when a demon possessed him. In fact, his sister’s boyfriend, Arne, wanted David to be safe again and told the demon to take his body instead. While the demon took over Arne’s body, Ed Warren had a heart attack as he watched it happen.

Arne made a lot of horrible decisions while he was under the demon’s possession. It turns out that he stabbed his landlord 22 times. His defense for the entirety of his court hearing was that he was possessed by a demon. The Warrens were at his trial to testify and had quite a bit of proof to show the court, but Arne was convicted of manslaughter. The Annabelle doll that the Warrens have in their collection was featured in this movie as well.

Annabelle

Annabelle Doll

Annabelle took place in Santa Monica, California, when John Form bought his wife, Mia, a porcelain doll meant for their first child, Leah. They added it to the collection of dolls in the nursery and just knew that she would love it. The family began to experience some very bizarre events in the home when they added the doll. They were attacked by two members of a cult, and one of them killed herself while she was holding the doll in their home.

Mia and Leah were attacked by a demon a few times, and they ended up calling a priest to exorcise the demon. Father Perez comes to them, and he tells them that demons are known for attaching themselves to objects like dolls. Father Perez takes the doll from Mia and John and gives it to the Warrens.

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation

Annabelle: Creation features the Annabelle doll locked up in the Warren’s collection. This film is all about how the doll was created by a dollmaker named Samuel Mullins. He and his wife suffered a horrible loss when their daughter, Annabelle, was hit by a car. He and his wife wanted to feel the love of a child again, so they took in six children from the local orphanage.

The demon in the doll began to stir up paranormal activity for Samuel and the children. The demon also posed as one of the nuns, Sister Charlotte. The events that took place at the hands of the Annabelle doll were horrendous. This is why the Warrens kept the doll in a glass case; that is where she remains today.

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home

Annabelle Comes Home occurs right after Ed and Lorraine Warren take her home and lock her in a glass case. The Warrens hired a babysitter, Mary Ellen, to watch their daughter, Judy. They wanted a night out together, and Mary Ellen seemed the perfect fit. However, one of Mary Ellen’s friends shows up at their home and decides to sneak into the collection room, and she opens up Annabelle’s case. This is when multiple spirits get released.

One of the many artifacts from this movie is the Samurai armor, which is one of the main attractions in the museum. Judy and Mary Ellen’s friend stare in awe at this armor. They could even hear the battle cries of the Samurai coming from it. Not only that, they could hear the screams of his victims as well.

The Shadow Doll

The Shadow Doll

There are hundreds of different cursed and haunted items in the Warren’s Museum. Their daughter, Judy, is now in charge of it. One item that hasn’t been featured in the films is the shadow doll. This is a very creepy handmade doll. The story is that it will visit people in their dreams and can even stop their hearts while they are sleeping.

If you are ready to see more of these cursed artifacts, be sure to watch The Conjuring movies in order.

The Enfield poltergeist is one of the most famous and controversial cases of alleged paranormal activity in history. It involved a family of six who claimed to be terrorized by a malevolent spirit in their council house in Enfield, London, between 1977 and 1979. The case attracted media attention, public debate, and scientific investigation, as well as the involvement of two renowned paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren whom you may remember from The Conjuring franchise.

What Is Apple’s Enfield Poltergeist Documentary About?

Now, the story of The Conjuring 2‘s haunted Enfield house is being adapted into a four-part miniseries on Apple TV+, titled The Enfield Poltergeist. The series is directed by Jerry Rothwell, an award-winning documentary filmmaker who has explored topics such as autism, activism, and art in his previous works. The series combines factual documentary footage and interviews with dramatized reconstructions of the events, featuring actors such as Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson, Eleanor Worthington-Cox, and Fern Deacon.

The series aims to provide a balanced and nuanced perspective on the case, exploring the different viewpoints and interpretations of what really happened in the Enfield house. It also examines the social and cultural context of the time, such as the economic hardship, the rise of tabloid journalism, and the fascination with the occult. The series also delves into the psychological and emotional impact of the phenomenon on the family members, especially the two young sisters who were at the center of the alleged poltergeist activity.

The Enfield poltergeist case has been previously adapted into other media forms, most notably the 2016 horror film The Conjuring 2. The film was part of The Conjuring Universe franchise, which is based on the real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The film depicted the Warrens as the main protagonists who came to help the Hodgson family in Enfield and faced a demonic nun figure. The film was a commercial and critical success, but it also received criticism for its historical inaccuracies and sensationalism.

The Enfield Poltergeist miniseries promises to be a more faithful and realistic portrayal of the case, drawing from extensive research and archival material. It also features interviews with some of the original witnesses and participants of the case, such as Janet Hodgson, Maurice Grosse, Guy Lyon Playfair, Anita Gregory, and Graham Morris. The series also includes new evidence and insights that have emerged since the original investigation.

At its most basic definition, a house is a building or dwelling where a small group of people come together and live. On the surface, a house uses its sides and roof to protect the inhabitants from the vicious elements on the outside. But what if such protection came with a particular price? Some paranormal theorists argue that houses instead bottle up the darker elements and energies created inside them and over decades the home becomes malevolent. A sort of infernal spiritual prison that accepts human visitors who may or may not make it out sane and alive.

Many of these notoriously haunted houses have been chronicled in some of Hollywood’s greatest horror films. Some have stuck truer to the source material and others have taken great creative liberties to ensure that audiences have never felt the same about any house they cross or the horror that lay within it. Just what are some of these haunted houses that have inspired the greatest horror films ever made?

Amityville House

The Real Amityville House

Amityville is perhaps one of the most widely recognized haunted house cases ever in existence.  The Lutz family bought their dream home on Long Island in December 1975, a gorgeous Dutch Colonial Revival that sat on the banks of South Oyster Bay.  The former owners were slaughtered in the middle of the night by their own son, Ronald DeFeo Jr. who later claimed that voices in the house told him to murder his family. Over the next twenty-eight days, the Lutz family endured a living hell as they encountered ectoplasm slime cascading down the walls coupled with freezing rooms and ungodly screams. They fled in absolute terror on January 14, 1976 never to return again.

Their story was chronicled in the famous Jay Anson novel, The Amityville Horror, which instantly became a bestseller. Such a novel caught the eyes of Hollywood producers who in 1979 put the hellish experiences of the Lutz family on the big screen in one of the most recognized haunted house films that have now produced or inspired a whopping sixteen sequels. Today, the house is owned privately and the address changed to deter any members of the public from seeking out the horrors for themselves.

The Exorcist House

The Real Exorcist House

Considered by many to be the scariest horror film of all time. For many audiences trying to mentally cope with such an experience, it was normal to repeat the mantra of “it’s only a film.” Unbeknownst to many people both then and even now, there was very much a real-life haunted house that inspired the highest-grossing horror film of all time, and unlike the film, it wasn’t in Georgetown.

The totally unassuming location of Bel-Nor, Missouri is where the real-life inspiration for William Peter Blatty’s horror novel, The Exorcist came from. A young boy known only as “Roland Doe” was given the gift of an ouija board by a family member. Before long, Roland had opened up an ethereal portal from which a demon emerged and possessed his adolescent body. A pair of priests were brought in to perform an exorcism which was said to have lasted days. The boy was eventually saved and grew up to live a relatively normal life, however, the home in Missouri still stands and while it bears the appearance of an unassuming brick brownstone, it once bore home to a demon breaking through to destroy an innocent human soul.

The Real Conjuring House

The Real Conjuring House

The Conjuring came along to film audiences in 2013 under the direction of master filmmaker James Wan. But this was no writing room creation, as there was a real home in existence that both inspired the film and introduced the world to the most popular haunted house-hunting duo ever known, Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The unsuspecting farmhouse located in Burrillville, Rhode Island was the catalyst for what is now the first film to be set in The Conjuring film series universe. In 1971, the Perron family, which included five young daughters, moved in with high hopes of starting a better life. Instead, they were met with flying objects, wandering spirits in black, and suffered under the many torments of a long-deceased spiritualist known only by the name of Bathsheba who roamed Burrillville nearly a century before. The Warrens were brought in to facilitate an exorcism along with many house blessings. The Perron family eventually moved and the home has had many owners as recently as 2022 when a Bostonian developer confessed to not being able to stay because of the “powerful energy” within the home.

Ammons “Demon” House

Ammons Demon House

Demon House was the name of a 2018 horror documentary from Ghost Adventures host Zak Bagans. The documentary was a smash hit on the indie film scene and grossed so much money that Netflix bid on the rights to the story behind the property (which Bagans also owns) to make a full-length horror film. What exactly was the story behind this tiny, run-down house in Gary, Indiana?

The Ammons family (mother, grandmother, and three children) should have known upon moving into the home in 2011 that swarming black flies would be a bad omen of things to come. The home itself was a possible host to some black magic and ritualistic mayhem that allowed many demons to enter the home. Shadow figures, levitations, and demonic possession behavior infested the family so deeply that the police and child authorities were called to a local hospital when the Ammons children were literally walking upside down on the walls with no explanation. Exorcisms couldn’t come soon enough to cure the family and eventually they relocated shortly thereafter.

The Stanley Hotel

The Shining's Stanley Hotel

Yes, we know. It isn’t a house! The Stanley Hotel is not the name of any horror film that average fans may recognize. However, if you were to rename it the Overlook then you would have conjured up Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 psychological horror masterpiece, The Shining.  Jack Nicholson starred as a tortured writer alone with his family at a secluded hotel during the snowy offseason in hopes of never going mad. Directly from the novel written by everyone’s favorite horror author Stephen King, it’s a film that’s instantly recognizable.  How true to life was this actual hotel?

King himself was in residency at Boulder and stayed at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado for a single evening.  A 140-room Colonial Revival-styled hotel on the cusp of the Rocky Mountain National Park, King’s stay was haunting from the start as he and his wife were the only visitors during the onset of winter and took in the vast size and constant eeriness. In fact, it was a fever dream King had of his young son being chased through the empty halls by a maniac which served as the catalyst for his most famous novel to date. The Stanley Hotel is still in business today, on the list of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and takes reservations to this very day.

The Conjuring 2 House

The Real Conjuring 2 House

The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Haunting served as a sequel to the original box office smash hit, however, this real-life haunted house was not found in America. This haunted house was an unassuming flat across the pond in Enfield, England which is a suburb of the London area.  What would inspire James Wan and Hollywood studios to bank on taking their franchise to Europe?

In 1977, a frantic British mother named Peggy Hodgson called the police about the nonstop poltergeist activity in her home, which included moving furniture, sinister voices, and her own children levitating in their bedroom. The Society for Psychical Research headed up by Maurice Grosse and Guyplayfair came in to investigate. What put this haunting over the top and inspired a fantastical horror film was that one of the children was interviewed on tape growling and changing voices that were so disturbing that after the family moved, they essentially went into hiding to avoid bringing about any more terror in their personal lives.

The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House has the distinction of serving as inspiration on a dozen or more horror films, series, events, documentaries, and even a ride at Disney (The Haunted Mansion). In fact, Stephen King used the eerie hauntings from the Winchester Mystery House to serve as the plot of his famous Rose Red miniseries. An even more fun fact is that Winchester is such a magnificently haunted house, that King didn’t even write a book based on it and fleshed out his teleplay directly without any fictional basis which is a rarity for the cherished author.

Winchester is a sprawling multistory mansion in San Jose, California that features 160 rooms, 2,000 doors, 10,000 windows, 47 stairways, 47 fireplaces, 13 bathrooms, and 6 kitchens which makes all the more surface area for spirits to wreak havoc. The legend attached to the home is that Sarah Winchester, a wealthy widow to the Winchester Rifle fortune, had suffered both her husband and infant dying unexpectedly. After a seance, she learns that angry ghosts caused the deaths of all the souls that the rifles have claimed over the years. She catches the idea to build a house big enough for them all, hence the Winchester Mystery House is born. However, Sarah wasn’t alone in her company, and the mansion is said to be packed with angry roaming spirits that still have neither forgiven nor forgotten who put them there in the first place.

The Changeling House

The Changeling House

The Changeling was an incredibly emotional, albeit powerful horror film that opened to audiences in the spring of 1980. The biggest coup for director Peter Medak was that Academy Award-winning actor George C. Scott had agreed to star. Scott played a composer who moved West from New York after the untimely deaths of his family only to rent an oversized mansion in which he finds out he wasn’t alone. A standard horror film with a normal plot, was there more to the story?

The real Changeling House resides in Denver, Colorado, and has all the appearances of an enormous, two-story wrap-around. Its haunting originates eerily enough with a real-life composer named Russell Hunter who rented the home to compose musical scores. Constant heavy poundings and banging on all the walls and rooms habitually woke Hunter and he took it upon himself to investigate the home before finding a third-story room revealing the sinister and actually buried secrets that culminated in a hellish spirit taking over the house. Hidden away in Chessman Park, the sinister home still stands.

The Snedeker House

The Snedeker House - The Haunting in Connecticut

The Haunting In Connecticut is without a doubt one of the more catchy, and popular haunted house films that was indeed the inspiration for a popular 2009 box office horror hit. The film starred Virginia Madsen as a fictionalized version of  Carmen Snedeker, a Southington woman who moves her family into a home in hopes to alleviate the medical travelings of her cancer-afflicted son. The film gained notoriety as having one of the more original plots among film critics’ viewpoints in that this unassuming home was hiding its darker past….of being a funeral home.

True to life, the Snedekers had moved into a former funeral home and any unsettled spirits were not all that they had to contend with. Supernatural seeker couple Ed and Lorraine Warren were brought in to check the home out. Via clairvoyance and other paranormal tools, it was discovered that the lowest basement floor of the home had been used for necromancy, a black magic sorcery art used to summon the dead. Their practices also were said to have involved necrophilia and being in a funeral home, such a supply of corpses to use was virtually endless. Dark shapes, brutally cold rooms, and demonic havoc of all types eventually had the Warrens and Snedekers risking their lives until a massive exorcism was performed to settle the house. As of 2023, the Southington home still stands and is held by private owners who have yet to comment on if any spirits have remerged.

The Real Entity House

The Real Entity House from the 1980s Movie

The Entity.  Just that title alone speaks more fear and terror into many people’s psyches, and that is an absolute fact. In 1982, director Sidney J. Furie adapted what ended up being a largely true haunting account of a Los Angeles area woman named Doris Bither. Actress Barbara Hershey played her with a quiet reserve despite being wailed and assaulted (even by sexual means) by an unseen demonic force. But this film did more than chronicle an abusive haunting, it instead profiled this unassuming home in the midst of a bustling Los Angeles suburb.

The real Entity house and its case became famous thanks in large part to parapsychologist and UCLA professor, Dr. Barry Taff who was contacted by Doris in 1974 to examine her home. Taff was blown away by what he saw; arcing balls of unexplained paranormal lights that seemingly appeared, bent themselves, and disappeared almost upon command. The home was believed to have an especially violent incubus that had somehow attached itself to Doris to unyielding ends. Despite some remodeling and additions, the notorious Entity house still stands today as a constant reminder of one woman’s battle with an incubus.

A man named Arne Johnson stabbed another man to death and claimed it was, in fact, a vicious demonic entity that possessed him and made him commit murder. This criminal case has particular notoriety for being the first time that a defendant actually claimed demonic possession as a defense in American history. How did this demonic entity come about? According to the Warren’s, it entered into Johnson after jumping from a small boy as the demon escaped Hell. You know, classic demon jumping from boy story.

Last Night In Soho

Last Night In Soho

Hotshot action comedy director Edgar Wright had a realization this past year that not only has he never made a film in central London but that he’s also never made a horror film. With quite a filmography including Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim, and Baby Driver, Wright is looking to change things up cinema-wise. Currently a release date of September 25, 2020 has been set by the studio, but what’s the plot? In typical Edgar Wright fashion, he has flat out refused to give any details on his new film which he has vaguely termed as an intense “psychological horror-thriller.” If pictures are worth a thousand scares, this is going to be a good one.

A Quiet Place II

A Quiet Place Part 2

A Quiet Place was the breakout horror hit in 2018. It was one of the most unique horror films ever made that seemed to command theater audiences to physically be silent as they listened to what unfolded in the taught horror thriller. The hotly anticipated horror sequel is set to premiere on March 20, 2020. But what is the plot and cast situation this time around? Added to the cast are acting great heavyweights Djimon Hounsou and Cillian Murphy. What can we expect for the plot? Return writer and director John Krasinski is refusing to give out any details to keep the surprises as shocking as he can, with the only hint being offered up that the film will involve brand new, and original concepts not featured in the first film.

Becoming a paranormal investigator requires a tremendous amount of dedication, patience, and on-the-job training while enduring endless amounts of critics, hyperbole, and highly questioned evidence. With the passing of Lorraine Warren this last week, we thought you could use a reminder of the impact Lorraine had on the paranormal world. Lorraine was an investigator who worked tirelessly at trying to bring truth forth in many paranormal claims and who also aided in defeating evil whenever necessary.

Five important facts about Lorraine and her paranormal work:

  1. Lorraine and Her Secret

Lorraine Warren was born on January 31, 1927, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Since she was eight years old, Lorraine claimed that she could see auras around people. Attending the very prestigious all-girls Catholic school Lauralton Hall, Lorraine kept her ability a secret, for fear of being outcast. She kept her gift a secret until she met Ed Warren, whom she married years later.

  2. New England Society for Psychic Research

Together with her husband Ed Warren, the pair founded the New England Society for Psychic Research in 1952. Known as the oldest ghost hunting group in New England, it was the combination of Ed’s research in demonology as well as Lorraine’s clairvoyant senses that helped them investigate over an estimated 10,000 paranormal cases in their lifetime. Originally was set up to investigate hauntings. in 1965, both Ed and Lorraine investigated a case where a young spirit claimed she was wandering around a home looking for her mother still. It was with that case that Lorraine claimed to dedicate a large portion of their work to helping earth-bound spirits move on.

  3. Lorraine Goes Looking For Ghosts

Investigating homes that were haunted in the late 1950s was a challenge, as people didn’t know where to look for help, as well as the Warrens had trouble advertising their paranormal services. They would drive up and down streets and would stop when Lorraine used her clairvoyance in detecting a house that was haunted. Ed was a talented painter who would then do a quick drawing of the house and they would approach the home and knock. Giving the homeowners the picture, the Warrens would then slowly ask about the house and reveal their abilities to help.

  4. The Amityville House Comes A Knocking

The Amityville Horror was considered the most infamous of all the Warren’s investigations. According to an interview with Lorraine in 2005, she said that the evil permeating the Amityville house was so strong that even after she left, the evil followed her back all the way home and manifested in so many ways that Lorraine vowed never to return to the Amityville home again.

  5. Lorraine Was a Devout Catholic

Despite any misconceptions about her faith or the manner of her solo investigations in later years, Lorraine was unabashedly Catholic. In fact, prior to her investigation with Ed at the Amityville house, Lorraine had mysteriously received a letter in the mail, including a relic of Padre Pio, who was a mid-20th Century Catholic saint. She carried the relic often and it was with her both during and after the Amityville investigation claiming that if she didn’t have the relic to rely on then evil would have surely won.

Legends are everywhere in the paranormal and supernatural communities. They can be oral traditions that tell of a certain event in history, that while unauthenticated by certain means, they nevertheless hold a certain degree of truth to them that is indisputable. In the American West and Southwest, there is one particular legend that has been gaining more and more popularity these days, and that is “La Llorona, otherwise known as “The Weeping Woman”.

The Legend of La Llorona – The Weeping Woman

The most agreed upon part of the legend of La Llorona revolves around a tragedy. Locations vary for the setting between Northern Mexico, California, and the American Southwest area. The legend tells of a woman, in some stories she is referred to as Maria. Others have her simply as “the woman” or “the widow”. She was known to live in a dry area with a small river bank nearby. There have been certain rivers in both California and Mexico that have been associated with Maria, but some simply cannot be located and the only consensus is that her tragedy occurs by the river bank.

The Curse of La Lloronoa - The Weeping Woman

The most standard facts about her story are that she was a beautiful young woman, married to a handsome and faithful soldier of the local military with two young children. The husband is tragically killed while away and word gets back to her of his untimely demise. Overwhelmed by grief, she takes her two young children to the riverbank and drowns them. The legend varies some here that she was said to be wailing loudly as she drowned them. Others have her drowning them before flinging her own self into the river to drown, while another legend has her being found and her running off from the shame of what she did.

Another more unsavory version has the young woman giving birth to twins. When having them baptized there is some sort of error and only one of the children are baptized. Her husband grows disenchanted with her and he leaves her and the twins for another woman. Out of self-loathing, she drowns the children and herself. Upon dying, she is turned away by God and he curses her to forever roam on Earth for what she did to her children. Her spirit is seen near riverbanks, in a faint white dress, with soiled black hair. as she moans and cries out for her unspeakable past actions.

The Curse of La Llorona Comes To Hollywood

Warner Bros. released a horror film entitled, The Curse of La Llorona on April 19, 2019.  The plot focuses on a 1970’s California family who is being stalked by La Llorona.  James Wan, writer and director of the Conjuring film series is producing.
