Every good haunting needs a history, and The Congress Inn has quite a lengthy one. Upon initial investigation, information on the history of the hotel is scarce as if the past holds secrets no one dares to speak of or wants to be discovered. But, with enough digging, you’ll soon unearth personal tales and reviews from previous guests who all agree that something lurks within The Congress Inn that supports all the lore and rumors.
Many haunted hotels in America got their starts during the Civil War. As a battle with approximately 1,264,000 American casualties, the war was a blood bath that was bound to leave something behind.
Tennessee was a proper battleground during the war; some of America’s deadliest battles were waged on the state’s ground including the Battle of Shiloh in April 1862. Major locations important to the war included Cattanooga, Stones River, Franklin and, of course, Nashville, which brings us back to The Congress Inn.
With thousands of wounded soliders, the need for hospitals was increased, and The Congress Inn was one of the early Civil War hospitals that housed injured and dying soliders. Of course, most patients couldn’t be saved. The war raged on, bodies piled up, and legend says that as the hospital ran out of room to dispose of the corpses, it resorted to cementing them into the basement walls.
One of the most famous stories about the haunted hotel dates back to 1987. Rumor has it that a guest awoke on his stomach only to find himself pinned to the bed. A large weight crushed his legs and knees, forcing him against the mattress and rendering him completely helpless. For the next 10 to 15 seconds, the guest laid there, unable to turn over until the weight suddenly released and the empty room was silent as ever.
This haunting experience led to questioning the locals, and the hotel’s ties to the Civil War were revealed. The bodies in the basement walls may still be encased today, and there are plenty of modern-day guests who report their own frightening encouters at the hotel.
From purported sightings of uniformed soliders lingering in the hall to the sound of gunshots and canons echoing through the walls, plenty of people who visit The Congress Inn go expecting nothing but legends but leave with a real haunt and stories to tell.
Is there really a blood well still in the basement? Are spirits connected to their old beds in the hospital ward like rooms 102 and 104 where one guest online wrote about seeing a young man stand and vanish from doorways?
Historical haunt buffs should mark The Congress Inn as a stop along their tour of America’s haunted hotels. It’s one of Tennessee’s local legends, and offers a chance encounter to glimpse the horrors of America’s bloody past. Apart from the guest who was held down in 1987, there don’t appear to be any other recounts of violent or physical encounters with the Cival War ghosts at The Congress Inn, so don’t worry too much.
Maybe it was a one-time deal. Maybe some people have been too scared to come forward. Or maybe, 30 years ago, a ghost decided to spook a guest just enough to get the rumor mill churning in hopes that the truth would come to light.

When the cast and crew of the hit television show Ghost Adventures arrived in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, they didn’t know what to expect. After checking out the Palmer House Hotel, the group of paranormal investigators declared the local historic landmark haunted. Zak and his crew are just a few of the guests who experienced things that went bump in the night at the hotel.
Built in 1901, the Palmer House Hotel sits right on top of another hotel. That first hotel was the victim of a fire that swept through the property and burned the brick structure to the ground. The new Palmer House Hotel was a large and elaborate building with three floors, brick walls to keep fires from spreading and state of the art amenities. At the time of its construction, it was the only building in the city with interior electric lights and full electricity.
A popular story surrounds a little boy who stayed in the hotel with his parents. Though no one can recall exactly how he died, it’s clear that he enjoyed his stay because he never left. The little boy makes appearances in the hallways on the second floor. Guests have also heard the sounds of his rubber ball bouncing and moving through the halls.
If you truly want to experience something paranormal, make sure you stay in either room 11 or room 17, which former guests claim is the most haunted. One terrified young woman woke in the middle of the night to see a man standing at the foot of her bed and staring at her. By the time she roused her husband, who was in bed beside her, the man she saw in her room was gone. Others claimed to see a tall and skinny man dressed in old-fashioned clothing standing in one of these rooms. He almost always appears in the middle of the night and disappears as quickly as he appeared.
There are also stories told about an elegant looking woman with a red turban perched on her head. At least one employee recalls seeing her walk out of the bar and disappear in front of his eyes. Others attempted to approach the woman and witnessed her vanish without a trace. Locals and hotel staff believe this woman and some of the other resident ghosts date back to the time of the former hotel and now linger in the Palmer House Hotel, which stands in its place.

The Arlington Resort Hotel in Hot Springs, Arkansas, originally built in 1875, is a beautiful and historic hotel. Patrons of the hotel tell stories of seeing people eerily dressed in old-fashioned clothes walking down the halls or strolling through the lobby before simply disappearing into thin air. Some speak of seeing a young girl in a pink dress in the lobby. Others report seeing the ghost of a woman in one of the two towers, wearing a wedding dress staring to the stars. Others have reported that they’ve seen the hotel’s old bellman, Henry Tweedle, on the fourth level of the building. He walks through closed doors before disappearing. Faucets are said to be turned on and off by themselves, people being brushed by something when no one is there, ghostly laughter and lights going on and off when no one is around. But…
The hotel very well seems haunted, yet management may be keeping a tight lid on any ghostly scuttlebutt. Reports have it that several rooms within the hotel have been permanently locked, and some have even been walled up to prevent both guests and hotel staff from entering. If that doesn’t give you enough pause to wonder whether the rumors of haunting are true, not much will. Employees have been willing to talk, but quickly tighten their lips as if they were told to keep quiet. The bartender confessed to a particular bottle of wine continually jumping off the shelf with several guest-witnesses but it’s not often you’ll get someone to fess up.
Al Capone would rent the entire 4th floor for his crew of bodyguards and gangsters. His favorite was the Arlington’s room 443 where Capone could see what was happening at the Southern Club across the street. Southern Club was a gambling and entertainment joint that opened in 1893. Guests and employees have said that the elevator mysteriously will open, travel to the 4th floor and stop as if to drop someone off. You can even rent the Capone Suite if you want to experience the perks of Scarface and his crew.
Many rumors circulate about the Arlington Resort Hotel being haunted. By whom or what and why it’s tough to get the stories straight. The building does have quite a history though. The hotel was originally four stories and built in 1875. In 1892, the original building was razed and replaced by a larger brick building. However, the new building was destroyed by a fire in 1923. Afterward, it was replaced with the Arlington Resort Hotel that remains standing to this day. The history of the hotel causes one to wonder whether it is the spirits of some who possibly died in the fire that haunt the hotel.
Some hotels will embrace their ghosts, but the Arlington is not one of those hotels. If you’re going to ask someone if they’ve seen any ghosts or heard stories, do it when nobody else is around. You could ask specific questions such as “are there any boarded up rooms in the Arlington,” or in the bar ask about the bottle that was said to jump off the shelf. You could perhaps ask, “What kind of liquor was it?”
1 Grand Union Square, Fort Benton, MT 59442, USA
The Grand Union is the oldest hotel in Montana and one of the most haunted places in Fort Benton. One of the strangest incidents was when a cowboy tried to ride his horse up the main staircase and was killed by the manager of the bar. Guests have heard the sound of horse hooves on the stairs, and other entities as well.
A famous story is about a driver making a food delivery who noticed people in period costumes watching him from a window. When he asked about the event going on at the hotel, he was told that the room wasn’t occupied. Two women guests staying on the second floor reported watching “dancing” blue orbs all night. They were more fascinated by the lights than frightened.
Other activity includes flashlights rolling across a table and beds that were already made mussed up when no one is in the room. One apparition is thought to be Charles Rowe, who once managed the hotel.
