At the start of each Halloween season, there are a few hotly anticipated traditions: Oktoberfest celebrations, costume parties, pumpkin beer, pumpkin spiced lattes, pumpkin bread, gorging on candy corn until you puke, scaring your little sister, etc. However, there is one event that stands above all: FrightFind’s annual guide of haunts.
As always, we are not here to rank or tell you which killer clown (Pennywise) is scariest; we are just here to bring you at least one haunted house to visit in every state. Some haunts draw thousands; some draw dozens. We have some repeat top haunts, but we left room for some new blood. But enough waiting – Prepare yourselves for FrightFind’s top haunts in every state – 2017!
Kicking off our 2017 favorite haunts is none other than Pinson, Alabama’s award-winning INSANITARIUM. You’ll visit the lair of the demented Dr. Ausnemen, the mad scientist whose evil undead still lurk the grounds. But rumor has it the deranged doctor has also created a machine which allows INSANITARIUM’s victims..er, visitors to witness creatures only seen in nightmares. INSANITARIUM promises to step up the scares each and every year to deliver the ultimate fright fest for the whole family (although parents are advised the attraction may be more appropriate for those 13 and up).
INSANITARIUM is also updated and redesigned every year so returning guests will always get a new spook. Rain check? No need. INSANITARIUM offers covered waiting areas with availability to snacks and refreshments to boot. INSANITARIUM also supports their local arts by working closely with Pinson Valley Effects, PVFX, a special effects group geared to offering young artists real-world experience in costuming, prop making and set design. A Haunted House in an Actual Mortuary
Moving up from our 2016 Runner Up list to take the number one spot this year is Carpenter’s Mortuary, one of the only haunted houses in the US located in an actual, eighty-eight-year-old mortuary. As you make your way down the horrifying halls of the Spook House, you’ll come face to face with the murderous morticians and ghastly gravediggers that still reside in Mother Carpenter’s mortuary and children’s home of horrors. Yep. You read that right. A mortuary and children’s home occupying the same space; what could go wrong? Well, with an embezzling, murderous “Mother” in charge, a lot apparently.
This haunt is scary, so scary in fact that it’s recommended that you pass this one by if you suffer from certain medical conditions. (Check out their “Warnings” page on their site for more info.) Otherwise, this attraction is recommended for those 13 and up and the entire attraction is located indoors so it will operate rain or shine! In addition to frights, this is a haunt with a heart.
